About Dr. Joseph Moses Juran
JOSEPH JURAN (1904-2008)
Introduction Quality:
“QUALITY” means those features of products which meet customer needs and thereby provide customer satisfaction.
“QUALITY” means freedom from deficiencies freedom from errors that require doing work over again or that result in field failures customer dissatisfaction , customer claims , and so on.
In this sense , the meaning of quality is oriented to costs , and higher quality usually costs less.
Md. Ujjal(01/12)
1. The mission of the firm as a whole is to achieve high product quality.
2. The mission of each individual department is to achieve high production quality.
IN 1941, JURAN STUMBLED ACROSS THE WORK
OF VILFREDO PARETO AND BEGAN TO APPLY
THE PARETO PRINCIPLE TO QUALITY ISSUES (FOR
EXAMPLE, 80% OF A PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY 20% OF
THE CAUSES). THIS IS ALSO KNOWN AS "THE VITAL
FEW AND THE TRIVIAL MANY". IN LATER YEARS,
JURAN PREFERRED "THE VITAL FEW AND THE USEFUL
MANY" TO SIGNAL THE REMAINING 80% OF THE
CAUSES SHOULD NOT BE TOTALLY IGNORED.
The key steps in Juran's theory on quality are quality planning, quality control
and quality improvement.
To implement a company-wide quality management process, you have to
identify your customers, find out their needs and work to meet those needs.
You create measures of quality and organize to meet those measures
consistently. And you need to create processes that work in real-life
conditions.
Juran's theory on quality postulates that top-level management must be
sincere in its efforts to commit to quality or else all efforts as such would not
work.

Establish process controls.
Identify who the customers are.
Determine the needs of the customers.

Develop processes able to produce the product features.
Quality Control

• Compare actual performance
with quality goals.
• Act on the difference.

infrastructure.

taking action”
