The team helped paint the centre as well as repair their gutters. The centre which was founded by Geneva Classen, is a place of safety for abused women and children. Love in a container CHILTON MELLEM Valentine’s Day is a time for warm hearts, but for the New Life Communi- ty Church in Malibu Village, receiving a container to warm tummies this win- ter seemed more fitting. The container was donated by Bread Line Africa, an organisation that donates containers to organisations to carry out their projects. All members of the church welcomed the R100 000 container which will be used to feed about 400 families in the area. The feeding scheme is part of the church’s out- reach programme called New Haven So- cial Concern. Families will be able to receive a cooked meal and parcels of food will be donated on occasion. Primarily with the colder weather that will be making an appear- ance, the container will be used as a soup kitchen. Many hands jumped on board in bring- ing the empty container’s purpose to its full potential by equipping it with a fully fitted kitchen. The container also has space for a lounge where people will be able to sit and eat. Some of these Sponsors include Foure Wine Farms who supplies the church with vegetables, Food Bank, BP Garage in Malibu Village and Shoprite in Eerste River. Pastor Mervin Jansen, who is the CEO of the Haven Social Concern at the church, said that after so many years the social needs of the community are still not met. “We are still experiencing unemploy- ment, poverty and problems with regards to housing,” he said. There were a few VIP guests who made a turn, one of which was ward councillor, Wilma Brady, who also said a few words. She expressed her delight in the initia- tive that the church was taking and made people aware of the fact that government cannot do things like this alone. She encouraged the congregation by telling them that to feed a hungry child, you feed a nation and by educating a child, you educate a nation.
