The newly built health clinic in Bobsway, Eerste River, next to the Eerste River Library, is set to open on 1 Au- gust 2012. Lungiswa James, councillor and mayoral committee member for health of the City of Cape Town says the clinic will offer a range of much- needed health services in the area. An estimated 150 to 200 people will benefit from services such as preventative services to adults and children, curative services for chil- dren under 12 years, HIV/Aids well- ness services, TB diagnosis treat- ment, basic antenatal care and antiretroviral services. James adds the clinic, costing al- most R15 million, will in future also offer adult curative services. The state-of-the-art building features six consulting rooms, an emergen- cy room, a dispensary, office and bulk store, a health education room, one main waiting area and three waiting spaces. There will be a separate area for teenagers, fea- turing a waiting area, one consult- ing room, a separate entrance and a courtyard. In the TB and antiret- roviral area, a DST (drug suscepti- bility testing) room, three consult- ing rooms, two toilets and a waiting area, will ensure patients’ comfort and privacy. The construction of the clinic has contributed to local job creation and James explains that a total of 30 job opportunities were provided for local labour. “One local labour- er still remains to maintain the landscaping for three months.” Although the clinic will not pro- vide health services to patients with chronic illnesses, they will in future aim to serve as a site where patients who receive medication from neighbouring community day centres, can collect their pre- packed chronic medication at the chronic dispensing unit. The clinic will be managed by a clinic manager. Clinic services will be rendered by a team consisting of four professional nurses, two en- rolled nursing assistants, one clerk, two senior workers, two TB assist- ants and one doctor who will visit the facility once a week. James says they aim to expand services in the future. The new health clinic to be opened soon, will make accessing health services so much easier for Eerste River residents. The Kleinvlei Police are appealing to resi-dents to beware of the high occurrence oftheft of the municipal wheelie bins in theEerste River area.

Warrant officer Annacletta Mothoalo toldTygerBurger the high incidents of theft oc-cur mostly in Sector 3 areas of the policingprecinct, especially in the new housing de-velopment Our Pride.

Last week alone, five cases of stolen wheel-ie bins were reported to the Kleinvlei police, says Mothoalo. She says besides using these

bins to convey their stolen goods or scrap in,criminals are now also selling these bins tobe recycled. She urged community membersto report stolen bins immediately and toknow their bin numbers. “If the communitysees a person with a wheelie bin, they mustinform the police, who will then inform lawenforcement.”

She says people found with stolen wheeliebins will be arrested and fined.

Victims of wheelie bin theft must first re-port their bin stolen to the Kleinvlei policeon 021 902 8300 then report it to the city’s sol-id waste department on 0860 103 089.

“They get treated like door-stops.”

Harsh words from a mother ofa special needs child, whoadmitsto once having the same kind ofattitude towards disabled peo-ple.

We see them sitting at a shopentrance. People walk past pre-tending not to notice. Somemight stare and others will stopbriefly to add a coin to the tin.

“I was that person,” saysFaranaaz Rinquest. “I used tolook at people and I felt sorry forthem, it’s not to say people arenot concerned or compassionate, but they don’t really under-stand.”

Faranaaz’s reality changed on23 January 2008, a date now en-graved on her memory. A heartprocedure on her son Ziyaadwent horribly wrong and left thethen five-year-old with severecerebral palsy.

Faranaaz recalls, “It wasworse than death for me ... be-cause they gave me someone elseback.” She resigned from her joband over the past four years mostof her life has revolved aroundtaking care of Ziyaad.

About a year ago things start-ed to regress out of nowhere. Zi-yaad’s mobility slowed down, hecouldn’t swallow properly andhe developed apnea, where thereis an impulse from the brain tostop breathing.

Increasing episodes of apnea

led to his readmission to RedCross. After two months in hos-pital, with his dad at his side24/7, Ziyaad is now back athome. His parents want to givehim comfort care.

Faranaaz explains, “The doc-tors asked me what I think, whether he is regressing to-wards death, and I said, well he’sdefinitely going somewhere andit’s not the positive way.

“They said whenever we treathim, we’re not healing him,we’re just intervening with theprocess that he will eventuallynot be here any more. We’reputting his body through morework, because he has pushed fur-ther than what they expected for

his condition.“He will have no further sur-

gery as any anaesthetic will bedeadly. He cannot even be resus-citated. So we decided to givehim comfort care for these lastmonths. No more antibiotics, nomore drips, no more interven-tions because his body is just do-ing too much work.”

The Rinquests are just one of28 families that Iris House Chil-dren’s Hospice is currently in-volved with. Iris House is one ofthis year’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can! concert’s benefi-ciaries, of which TygerBurger isthe media sponsor.

CARMEN JACOBS

Visitors to theNetcareKuilsRiverHospi-tal would have noticed a colourful addi-tion to the regular ambulance and vehi-cle fleet, in the hospital parking. The Bot-ties Fun Bus has been recruited byNetcare Kuils River to celebrate togetherwith hospital staff and management 10years of existence.

Karen Eagle, public relations officer forNetcare Kuils River says about this land-mark: “How quickly 10 years has flown by,it feels like yesterday that the existing foun-dations were taken over and building be-gan.”

To celebrate this milestone, all hospitalstaff are being spoiled by the managementof Netcare Kuils River Hospital. “If over thelast week or so you have seen a ‘party bus’driving along van Riebeeck Road and ontothe N1 towards Sea Point with a really happycrowd, it is surely the staff from the hospi-tal,” says Karen.

She adds that over a period of six days, 14busloads of staff and their partners will beenjoying a fun trip to Sea Point and the Wa-

terfront, having a meal and spending qualitytime with each other.

The Netcare Kuils River hospital openedits doors on 1 July 2002 and Karen says thecommunity support has been overwhelm-ing.

“As PRO for the hospital, I personally re-ceive the feedback from the majority of pa-tients as I visit them in the wards and a re-sounding echo of the word ‘family’ is nearlyunanimous from our clients.”

The facility, based in Van Riebeeck Street,Kuils River has experienced positivegrowth. Karen says the hospital has expand-ed from a 100-bed to 189-bed facility and theinitial number of four surgical theatres hasincreased to six. The hospital also had thefirst endovascular laboratory in the country– focusing on the diagnosis and treatment ofarteries and veins of the coronary, cerebral, renal and peripheral systems.

“Not overlooking the ‘Hi-Care, Hi-Touchand Hi-Tech’ vision that we strive for, wepride ourselves on providing a ‘family-like’feeling throughout the hospital,” she added. She emphasised the staff’s commitment toprovide excellent service and create a home-from-home environment for all patients.

Netcare staff celebrateNetcare Kuils River staff and hospital management about to board the Funbus.

Man vs machine vs the ladiesMale dominance will be underextreme threat on Saturday ascompetitors tackle the sixthFairbridge Mall BrackenfellGymkhana from 09:00 in whatmight well be tricky, wet, con-ditions.

Round four of the 2012 Witzen-berg Motorklub Gymkhana Se-rieswill haveanaddedattractionwith the presence of Anton Wan-nenburg and the much anticipa-ted, Gauteng-based, superchar-ged Ford Fiesta 1600.

However, never before havemen felt more uncomfortable astheir greatest threat on a wet sur-face will arrive in the minuteshape of Nashrene Schloss andLouise Appelgryn and their greatclass B Toyota Corolla Sprinter180i. Can they become the firstall-ladies combination to win aGymkhana overall?

As a fifth dan, Günther “Spi-derman” Appelgryn knows allabout the demands and he willhave his wife, Louise, filling thesuicide seat in the immaculateclass B VW Golf MkI 1800. Thispopular Brackenfell couple areanother combination capable oftaking overall honours.

“Vinnige” Fanie du Toit and

Kobus Wilson Jnr currently leadthe points war in their spectacu-lar class A Mazda Rustler LDV2.0 16v and they will have to fendoff the close attention of three-ti-me WBMK champions, Izak van

Zyl and Danye Louw, in their tur-bocharged class G Dynotech VWGolf GTi 2.0 Turbo.

Jacques du Plessis and DanyeLouw, another team who havetasted success at Fairbridge, and

their Du Plessis Auto class C To-yota Conquest RSi 1600 are pri-med for action.

Björn Venter and Jan van derVyver are the team to beat inclass D with their Race-Tech VW

Golf MkI 1.4i and rain may wellsee them challenge for overall ho-nours. Johann Zulch and Gr 10De Kuilen High School learnerTania Vermaak, are defendingtheir class E title with the CeresToyota E30 BMW 325iM but canexpect a serious challenge fromDeon and Maralize Conradie intheir FFR Buggy 2.3.

Class F is undoubtedly thetoughest class to crack at this sta-ge with the little Race-Tech Dat-sun Sedan of Herman Matheeand Ruan Reynders under threatfrom the Innovative WoodworkDatsun LDV 1600 of Anton Smitand Gavin Parsons. Ruan Reyn-ders and Herman Mathee changesides in the GX Sedan simply tospice up matters further.

For sheer pleasure the antics ofIzak van Zyl and Ettiene Swart intheir always sideways Nissan200SX Turbo will quickly becomecrowd favourites as will the V8powered E30 BMW of Mark Fon-tin and Hennie Odendaal.

A capacity entry is anticipatedfor the event and more informati-on can be found onwww.wbmk.co.za . Arrive early –follow the commentary – this ismotorsport for the people, by thepeople!

Officials hope the hosting of anew boxing tournament locallywill help to bring back the gloryboxing days of old in Cape Town.

The Western Cape Sports Schoolin Kuils River will host the SouthAfrican Elite Amateur BoxingChampionship from tomorrow to 7July.

“The glory days I refer to werewhen the likes of Cape boxingchampions such as Skeleton Mbo-ma, Sydney Hoho, Bashew Sibaca,Sipho Mange, Chris and BramleyWhiteboy dominated the South Af-rican boxing scene,” said Dr IvanMeyer, provincial minister of cul-tural affairs and sport at a medialaunch last week.

All nine provinces will be repre-sented in this prestigious event.

“I am particularly pleased that fe-male boxers will also be participat-

ing in this event as we have to en-sure that greater access happens sothat all boxers, irrespective of gen-der, are given the opportunity toparticipate and develop to their fullpotential,” Meyer said.

The tournament is seen as theperfect platform for the revival ofboxing in Cape Town and the prov-ince.

“The hard work starts now to en-sure that development grooms thenew crop of future stars.”

Boxing must play its role in pro-viding our disaffected youth withan alternative that they are exposedto on a daily basis in their respec-tive communities,” he added.

“Sport builds bridges. Sportmends and boxing which, when ad-ministered effectively, teaches val-ues of commitment, hard work, dis-cipline and physical and mental en-durance.”

The People’s Team are out of the PSL!Engen Santos’ fate was sealed at the Philip-

pi Stadium on Saturday afternoon when theylost 4-3 to Chippa United, who will now playin the PSL next season.

“This is a great achievement by ChippaUnited following what has been an impres-sive run both in the First Division and subse-quently in the Promotion Play-off,” said PSLCEO Stan Matthews.

“They have earned their place and I wouldlike this opportunity to congratulate the clubmanagement, the coaching staff, the playersand their fans for achieving this remarkablefeat.

“Judging from the excitement and passionfrom the fans in Philippi, there is no doubtin my mind that Chippa United will enjoygreat support from the football family.”

Chippa United’s ascendance tells a fasci-nating story. After only one season in the Sec-ond Division two seasons ago, they gainedpromotion to the First Division. Their stay inthe country’s second highest league lasted on-

ly 11 months as they now find themselvesin the Premier Division.

“A lot of work lies ahead for them as theyprepare for life in the Premier League,”added Matthews.

“As the league, we will offer them the bestpossible support to help them acquaint andadapt to life in the elite ranks.’’

Santos captain Tyren Arendse is hopingthat relegation to the National First Divi-sion will not result in a mass exodus of play-ers from the Cape Flats club.

“If I have to be honest with you, this sea-son we haven’t been good enough at all,” headmitted

“It’s a sad day for us, but it’s part of foot-ball. As players we have to look at our-selves. Our fans were counting on us today,as players we must take the responsibility, but we never did that.

“Now we must focus on getting back tothe PSL. I just hope all the players that werehere today stay with the team. It’s the re-sponsibility of all of us to get back to the bigleague,” he said.

For Santos’ veteran defender Nasief Mor-

ris, like Arendse a long-time club servant in hissecond spell at the club, it was a sad day to seethe club that first gave him his break in profes-sional football being relegated.

Making the occasion worse for him was thefact that his defensive lapse enabled ChippaUnited to score their third goal after the gamehad been locked at 2-2.

“Everybody knew it was do or die. We knewthat even if we went one nil down we had tostick to the game plan and fight and that’s what

we did in the first half, but sometimes thingshappen for a reason and if it’s set out that wayyou can’t change it.’’

Morris started his career with the “Peo-ple’s Team’’ as a 16-year-old before going onto play club football in Greece and then Spain, playing at some of the world’s top arenas andfacing some of the world’s top stars.

He is currently on loan at Santos, and atthis stage is unable to comment on where hewill be playing his football next season.
