kel, sê heelwat bottels drank is vandie rakkeafgeskiet en die winkel se yskaste en deureis vol koeëlgate ná vier gewapende rowersdie winkel omstreeks 10:00 op 11 Julie “be-soek” het.“Hulle het ingekom en my seun met ’n

vuurwapen op die grond gedwing. Een vanhulle het agter die toonbank ingekom en sy

wapen op my gerig. Maar ek was ook gewa-pen en toe ek sien hy reik na sy wapen, wasek reg vir hom en ek het eerste geskiet,” sêhy.Chetty sê hy en sy seun, wat albei gelisen-

sieerde vuurwapeneienaars is, en die vierrowers het toe almal begin skiet.“Daar is geweldig baie skote afgevuur,

maar dit het ongeveer vyf sekondes geduuren twee van die rowers is in die proses ge-wond. Die ander twee het weggehardloop,”sê Chetty. Die twee Chettys is nie raakge-skiet nie.Een van die verdagtes het aan sy wonde

tes met ’n ander klag verbind word, maarwag hy nog vir die vingerafdrukuitslae omte weet of van die ander ook by ander sakebetrek kan word.Hy sê geen klag gaan teen die Chettys aan-

hanging gemaak word nie, omdat hulle uitselfvederdiging opgetree het.

Die Parowpolisie op die toneel waar twee mans geskiet is tydens ’n mislukte roof van ’n drankwinkel op 11 Julie. Hierdie verdagte is in sy bobeengewond. Die ander een het later aan sy wonde beswyk. Drie ander is nog gearresteer.

Three carjackings have taken place inParow since the beginning of July.This is according to Colonel Gert

Nel, station commander of the Parowpolice.A Welgelegen motorist was assault-

ed by four carjackers in his drivewayon 7 July at about 17:00. They took offwith his new BMW. According to Nelthe attackers, threemen and awoman,were driving in a similar, unmarkedsilver BMW.“The victim was hit with a firearm

on his forehead. He is in hospital andhad to receive reconstructive surgery.His eye was also damaged,” Nel says.He says the incident is not connected

to a carjacking in Bothasig earlier inthe month, in which the suspects alsodrove a BMW. “That was amuch oldermodel,” he says.On 9 July three men and a woman

targeted a lawyer and her three clientswho were sitting in her white Corollain a parking space at Capitec inParow.“One suspect tried to grab the car’s

keys from the ignition through thewindow, and in the process pulled theowner from her car. The passengerswere then also thrown out and the fourtook off with the car.“There were no weapons involved

here and it seems that this was morea transport opportunity than a plan-ned hijacking,” Nel says about the in-cident that happened at 16:20.Nel says circumstances around the

third carjacking are not very clear.“The complainant says hewas asked

for jumper cables on the Giel Bassonbridge onenight at 01:00. In theprocesshis Opel Corsa was stolen.”According to Nel no arrests have

’nBloedstollende gil in Bostonwas diekatalisator vir ’n Whatsapp-verhaalwat goed vir ’n hond uitgedraai het,

maar nie so goed vir ’n inbreker nie.Dié gil is gehoor deur die huiswerker van

bure van die Bloemstraatse egpaar nadathulle enkele sekondes tevore ’n inbreker inhul huis betrap het.

“Abby het ons lewe gered,” vertel Charlla Grange oor die drama wat homself verle-de Donderdag in hul huis afgespeel het. Ab-by is die egpaar se staffie-terriër-kruising.

“Sy is in die voorval gesteek, maar sy hetnooit opgehou tekeregaan nie. As dit nie virhaar was nie...” sê Charl terwyl hy in sy sit-kamer oor die 18 maande oue bruin tefie sekop streel.

Hy en sy vrou, Zona, het die insident metTygerBurger se besoekherleef. Charl vertel:“Ons was in die kelder op die onderste ver-diepingbesig omWimbledon te kyk.Ditwasso 18:45.

Onraad gemerk“Ek het gehoor Abby blaf, maar hierdie

blaf was anders – ek kon duidelik hoor syhet onraad gemerk. Sy’s ’n terriër; hulle isvreeslik terrein-bewus. Abby het absoluutballisties gegaan.

“Dit was stikdonker in die studeerkamer.Toe ek daar instap, het ek die inbreker indie hoekie sien staan,” vertel Charl. “Vathom!” het ek vir Abby geskree. Charl sê diéman, glo ’n “bekende” onder die bure vir in-brake in die gebied, se vermetelheid hethom stomgeslaan. “Dat enigiemand so ver-metel kan wees om tydens gesinstyd by ’nmens se huis in te kom, is verbysterend,”het hy gesê.

Charl sê hy het die inbreker teen die borsgegryp en ’n gestoei het uitgebreek. Intus-senwasAbbybesig omdieman te karnuffel.Die gestoei is tot in die kombuis voortgesit,waar die inbreker toe ’nmes – “gelukkig eenmet ’n stomp punt”, sê Charl – gegryp en naAbby gesteek het.

Die bloedstollende gil was van Zona. Syhet intussen die polisie ontbied.

Wat die paar nie toe geweet het nie, wasdat ’n buurvrou se huiswerker dié gil ge-hoor het en dadelik haar werkgewer ingelighet.

Dié het toe dadelik op die buurt se What-sapp-groep ’n boodskap gestuur om te hoorof ander bewus was van die gil.

Terwyl Charl besig was ommet die inbre-

ker te stoei, het hy die heeltyd net daaraangedink dat hy dié ou “besig moet hou tot diepolisie kom”.

Zona vertel Abby het die heeltyd geblaf engebyt. “Dieman het geskree: ‘Haal haar vanmy af!’ maar Abby het net aanhou byt,” ver-tel sy. “Sy is báie beskermend teenoorCharlen sal hom met haar lewe beskerm.”

Bure mobiliseerDiebakleieryhet sowat 10minute geduur,

vertel Charl.Intussen het die boodskap vinnig op

Charl vertel: “Die inbreker het diemes opAbby se rug gebreek. Sy het hom aan die en-kels gebyt. Die volgende oomblik sien ek vyfvan my buurmense in die vertrek. Skielikis daar toe ekstra mans wat help,” sê hy.

Die egpaar sê dié bure het gehelp om dieinbreker vas te bind met kabelbande.

“Die polisie het opgedaag en hom wegge-neem,” sê Zona.

Toe die egpaar hul verklarings afgelê heten Charl die volgende dag polisie toe is, kryhy ’n skok.

“Die man word glo al hoe lank deur diepolisie gesoek, het hulle vir my gesê. Hy isuit op borgtog, en het ’n hele paar ander kri-minele sake teen hom.”

Charl sê dit was al die hoeveelste keer datdaar by hulle ingebreek is. Daar is selfskringtelevisie van ’n buurman wat wys die-selfde man was reeds vantevore in Charl seerf, sê hy. Sy dogter is ook voorheen met ’nmes binne-in die huis gedreig. “Maar ditwas voor Abby se tyd,” sê Zona. “As die nievir Abby was nie...”

Zona sê hul vierpotige heldin is tot Sater-dag nog met lekkernye deur die hele buurtbederf.

“Wat vir ons so treffend is uit die hele er-varing, is hoe die buurt soos een man opge-staan het in ’n tyd van nood.

“Die gemeenskap het besluit genoeg is ge-noeg.” Charl sê die Boston-buurtwag wordtans weer op die been gebring.

An elderly woman’s bank card andPIN have been stolen at the Platte-kloof Centre by “a friendly, well-

dressed woman”.Gerty Fouché says she might be 78, but

she is not stupid. This scamster caughther off guard, though.“When I parked at the centre, a woman

came up tome and greetedmewith a veryfriendly smile. She said she recognisedmefrom the Nedbank in N1 City, where sheworks,” Fouché recalls, adding that shedoes, in fact, bank at that branch.The scamster gave Fouché a Nedbank

brochure about a competition in whichyou can win R50 000.“She said she would help me to enter.

All I had to do was get an ATM slip. Atfirst I said I was not interested, but she to-tally mesmerisedme and convincedme togo to the ATM to get a slip,” Fouché says.Always aware that someone might

watch her at the ATM, Fouché says sheput her whole body between the ATM andthe woman when she put her PIN in.

“Then she convinced me to do it a se-cond time. Again I turned so that shecouldn’t see what I was doing, but she puther hand on the screen of the ATM.”Fouché says she believes this is a meth-

od to create a kind of “shadow” on thescreen which re-flects the keypad.“I do not know

how it works, butapparently it’s atrick,” she says.She handed the

slip to the woman,who offered her anenvelope to put hercard in.“She took my

card from me and Isaw how she put itin the envelope and gave it back tome. Shethen reminded me to go to the N1 CityNedbank branch the following day toclaim my prize and she walked away.”Fouché says it was only an hour later

that she discovered someone else’s Sassacard in the envelope. By this time, R1 000had been withdrawn from her account

and almost another R1 000 spent.“One can’t believe the feeling. I thought

this was something that just happened toother people. She was so professional. Forme this is a huge loss. R2 000 is a lot of mo-ney and I have been saving to go on holi-

day in threeweeks,” she says.Coenraad Groe-

newald, owner ofthe supermarketat the centre, con-firmed the inci-dent.“I know ATM

scams happen of-ten, but this oneseems strange tome. I worked atcorrectional servi-

ces for 22 years and I know how the crimi-nalmindworks. This is not your everydayscam. And the suspect just disappearedfrom the face of this earth,” he says.Fouché says she is still indecisive whe-

yearly due to botched circumcisions. Fema-le genital mutilation, on the other hand, isless common, although it is prevalent

among some Muslim groupings.With Bellville’s rising Somali population,

TygerBurger asked local hospitals for anysigns of this dated traditional practiceamong the locals.James Vught, hospital manager of Melo-

med in Bellville, says: “Since being at Bell-ville, not one incident [has occurred].”Laticia Pienaar, spokesperson of Tyger-

The SPCA in Grassy Park invites locals tocome spend their 67 minutes on MandelaDay (Saturday 18 July) by helping animalsin need.

“If you haven’t yet thought about yourplan of action for this year’s Mandela Day,the SPCA has just the plan for you,” saysWanika Davids, spokesperson for the Capeof Good Hope SPCA.

“If you haven’t yet thought about yourplan of action for this year’s Mandela Day,theSPCAhas just theplan for you,” she says.

Cape Town’s oldest and largest animalwelfare organisationhas listed 27 things youcan do, while you dedicate 67 minutes of yo-ur time – for the love of animals – in honourof the SPCA’s beloved patron, the late Nel-son Mandela.

“Because 18 July falls on a Saturday thisyear, the SPCA is inviting you to spend your67 minutes with them on either Friday 17 orSaturday 18 July,” she adds.

People interested can join the welfare or-ganisation between 08:30 and 12:30 on either

day.Tasks to be done, include repairing holes

in the ceiling, replace or repair doors, doorhandles, sand and varnishing the bench inthe garden as well as painting the ward ofthe animal hospital.

People will also be able to assist with fit-ting shelving in the store room, replace tapwashers and help increase the height of thedrip wires in all four isolation wards, Wan-ika says.

Animal pens, kennels and cages, the store

rooms, paddocks, farmyard and catteryneeds cleaning too.

Animal lovers will also be afforded the op-portunity to walk some of the dogs, as wellas help with much needed grooming, theSPCA says.

People are also encouraged to donate petfood.

I took my daughter to see theDisney on Ice show at theGrandwest casino. I thought itwas a great show last year, sodecided to spend the money andbuy tickets once again. Theshow was amazing but I wasshocked beyond belief at theprices of the items on sale. Ihave no problem spendingmoney and treating my kids,but it was an absolute rip off tobe charged that extremeamount of money for items.The popcorn that was for sale

was in a blue plastic bag andwas selling for ... hold yourbreath ... R90 each – I told thegentlemen that I did not wantto buy the whole machine.Then over to the candyfloss,

well that again was R90 each,so I decided to leave it andmaybe buy us a drink. Wellthere goes that idea, the SlushPuppies in a plastic cup (whichwas very beautiful) was sellingfor R90 each.So to buy your kids three

items, of which the Slush was250ml came to R270 + the costof the cheapest ticket at R170 =R440. This was for one child fora show that was 45 mins firsthalf and 30 mins second half –and they say perfect childrenentertainment for the schoolholiday – Yes good entertain-ment but a total rip off!I feel these prices are totally

unacceptable and was wonde-ring if this was school holidayentertainment or a get richquick idea from the casino.All in all I am still shocked

at these prices and will certain-ly do my utmost to ensure thatpeople are aware of this beforethey buy tickets for next year’sshow.Just as a matter of interest I

looked at the Toy Story figuresthey were also selling and theywere R170/R220 – I went toToys R Us to price them andthey have exactly the sameitems and they are between R70and R120.

Ingevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(i) van die Wet op Plaaslike Regering: Munisipale Eiendomsbelasting, Wet 6 of 2004, hierna die “Wet” genoem, worddaar hiermee kennis gegee dat die sewende aanvullende waardasielys (SV07) van die 2012- algemene waardasielys vir die 2015/16-boekjaarvanaf 21 Julie 2015 tot 31 Augstus 2015 vir die publiek by die lokale hieronder ter insae lê. Die vorms vir die indiening van besware is by hierdielokale beskikbaar. Die waardasielys is ook vanaf 21 Julie 2015 op die Raad se webwerf beskikbaar (adres hieronder).

Eiendomme word ingevolge artikel 78(1) van die Wet op die sewende aanvullende waardasielys (SV07) van die 2012- algemene waardasielysgeplaas indien dit: a) foutiewelik uit die waardasielys gelaat is; b) na die laaste algemene waardasie by die munisipaliteit ingesluit is; c) na dielaaste algemene waardasie onderverdeel of gekonsolideer is; d) ’n wesenlike toename of vermindering in markwaarde ondergaan het sedertdie laaste algemene waardasie; e) in die laaste algemene waardasie aansienlik verkeerd gewaardeer is; f) om enige ander buitengewone redeherwaardeer moet word; g) waarvan die kategorie verander het.

Ingevolge artikel 49(1)(a)(ii) van die Wet kan enige eiendomsbesitter of ander persoon wat wil binne die gemelde tydperk ’n beswaar bydie munisipale bestuurder indien oor enige saak wat op die waardasielys verskyn of daaruit weggelaat is. Besware kan slegs ten opsigte vaneiendomme wat op die SV07-lys gewaardeer is, ingedien word. Die eienaars van hierdie eiendomme sal skriftelik van hul SV07-waardasies inkennis gestel word by die posadres wat tans op die Stad se databasis is.

Aandag word spesifiek gevestig op die feit dat ’n beswaar ingevolge artikel 50(2) van die Wet met ’n spesifieke, individuele eiendom verbandmoet hou en nie teen die aanvullende waardasielys as ’n geheel ingedien kan word nie. Die vorms vir die indiening van besware is by die lokalehieronder genoem beskikbaar en kan van die webwerf afgelaai word. ’n Afsonderlike beswaarvorm moet vir elke eiendom ingevul word.

A decision by the Cape High Court last week, de-clared garnishee orders made from the wages ofemployees unconstitutional.

“This a great victory for workers that have forthe longest time been subjected to the most viciousexploitation through emolument attachment or-ders issued by the courts in respect of the amountsof monies that employers are ordered to deductfrom their wages,” said provincial secretary of Co-satu in the Western Cape, Tony Ehrenreich in amedia statement last week.

According to Ehrenreich the poorest of the poorat times had to sacrifice their entire salaries tosuch garnishee orders.

“Declaring many sections of the law unconstitu-

tional stops these kinds of deductions, which havereally seen companies plunging workers into des-titution through these emolument orders. Thisshould serve as a lesson to debtors who grant illconsidered credit to workers, in violation of natio-nal credit regulations that are meant to protectvulnerable sectors of the community,” he stated.

He called on workers to become aware of therights that they now have in respect of this judge-ment and to stop these garnishee orders fromplunging them into financial misery.

“Cosatu would like to see the courts urgently de-fining the maximum amount that can be deductedfrom workers’ wages by these types of orders inthe future.”

Responsible giving is in the spotlightat the upliftment and empowermentorganisation Metro Evangelical Ser-vices (MES).

On 26 June MES Cape Town hostedtheir monthly outreach, which is heldon the last Friday of every month.They used the event to once more ad-vocate for responsible giving.

With the monthly event, MES offersthe community a peek into what theydo and how they’ve impacted the Ca-pe Town community.

As Ilse Els (MES manager) says,everyone wants to give, but it mustdone in a responsible way.

Attendees of the outreach includedmembers of the Bellville community,different church denominations andvolunteers interested in helpingchange the heart of the city, accor-ding to a MES statement.

Attendees were given a detailed his-tory about the organisation before be-ing taken to the streets to meet withMES clients.

“The groups had tasks to do thatevening. Clients were handed bis-cuits, which had a little message ofhope from the Bible, Chomp (ChristHeals Our Many Pains) chocolatesand attendees also just shared in a lit-tle prayer with the homeless.”

One of the attendees, one Ferdi-nand, told Els the outreach had givenhim the chance to rediscover himselfand shown him how much MES’sclients “really appreciate the lovethat was shown to them on thatnight”, Els said.

The next outreach will be hosted on31 July in the Bellville PresbyterianChurch Hall at 19:00 and the entirecommunity is welcome.

At various points during the breathtakingdanceproductionBorneFrees, Stories ofHopelast Thursday, the grace and suppleness ofthe young dancers completely entranced theaudience.The northern suburbs dance contingent

comprised of dancers from Brackenfell, Bel-har and Eerste River High Schools. They we-re part of some 130 high school learners fromacross the Metropole, who participated inthis production choreographedmostly byCe-leste Botha and Marlin Zoutman.From Brackenfell, Mieke Erasmus, Demi

Daries, Uzusiphe Qezo, Elzaan Bock, RobynArendze, Jannike Rossouw, Wiaan Jacobs,Anastacia Saayman, Erin Jansen and Char-ne Poole participated.

The items performed by three local groupsincluded “WeMove Lightly” by the Bracken-fell learners, and “Feels like Winter” by theBelharians and Eerste Riverians.Other participating high schools and dan-

Above all else though, the fact thatlearners of every body size and shape wererepresented, was a story of hope, confidenceand immense pride in itself.If this productionwas any indication of the

future of dance in the country, it would besafe to say dance is on the right track.

Natural talent, commitment and excel-lent performances during the recent pro-vincial cricket trial matches did not gounnoticed, with both Matthew Valentineand Angelo Yiatses receiving deservedWestern Province u-17 cricket selection.District North proudly recorded its

highest ever amount of senior youthplay-er representation at provincial level withfour representatives in theu-17 age-groupand a further three representatives in theu-19 age-group, with Chesterhouse beingthe only high school in the northern sub-urbs receiving multiple representation.Over the past few seasons Chester-

house has become a formidable force in

cricket, progressing to a top four finishin the WPNS u-19A cricket league for thesecond season in a row, and the only highschool to have reached the semi-finals inboth the league and T30 knockout compe-titions for the 2015 season. What makesit so remarkable is that Chesterhouse asan academic institution with a numbersratio of around 10-15% compared to larg-er traditional sporting schools of thenorth, is able tomeasureupwith such im-pressive cricket results. Chesterhouseplaces emphasis on sport organisationand enjoyment, coaching passion and anabsolute belief and dependence on eachother within a team sport framework.

ered to contest this year’s South AfricanOpen Chess Festival.The event was supported by theWestern

Cape department of cultural affairs andsport.Advocate Lyndon Bouah, chief director

of sport and recreation, says: “In develop-ing a winning nation it is important to im-prove international sports successes bysupporting events at all levels.“Achieving an active and winning na-

tion is underpinned by an enabling envi-ronment.“The staging of this event at the Cape

Sun is part of our campaign to bring bigsport events to the Western Cape.”South Africa’s first ever grandmaster,

KennySolomon,markedhis return to com-petition on South African soil, which wasalso his first tournament onhome soil afterofficially receiving the title of grandmasterearlier this year.Solomon, originally from Mitchell’s

Plain and a previous winner of the tourna-ment, placed fourth in this year’s tourna-ment with a score of 8.5.“It was a tough tournament with a lot of

strong players. I am happy that we wereable to have four grandmasters participat-ing this year,” he says.“It is important that foreign grandmas-

ters participate in South African chessevents – this is how chess can grow in ourcountry.”The tournament also incorporated the

SA schools individual chess champion-ship. The championship saw some of thebest junior players in the country come upagainst each other.Former national junior team coach Cal-

vin Klaasen believes young players havean opportunity to make a career of thegame if the support shown at the SA Opencontinues to grow.

“It’s important foryoung players to identifywith heroes, to havesomething to strive for.“There are limited op-

portunities for youngplayers in SouthAfrica toprogress to a professionallevel at the moment, butthat can change if we aresupported correctly. Ken-ny’s grandmaster title isjust step one in South Af-rica becoming a powerfulchess country,” he says.Solomon, who now

lives in Italy, believesevents of this nature needto happen more often ifwe are to produce moreinternational-grade play-ers.“Chess events like these help people

build connections as we were there com-peting for over a week, so apart from theplaying there is also thepost-gameanalysisand it’s in these sessions where chess play-ers can take the opportunity to learn evenmore,” he says.English chess legend grandmaster Nigel

Short emerged victorious at the end of the11-round event. He gained the title basedon a tie-break system, after ending on ninepoints alongside grandmaster AleksaStrikovic from Serbia and India’s grand-master Abhijit Kunte.Short has been playing with the best

since he became a grandmaster at age 19.He was regularly placed in the top ten inthe world between the late 1980s and late1990s.He became the first English player to

play for the World Chess Championship ti-tlewhenheplayed againstGarryKasparovin 1993.Solomon will next travel to Gauteng

along with Short to play in a qualifier forone of the biggest chess tournaments in theworld taking place in Las Vegas.

The inaugural Cape Town Cup will setthe Mother City alight with two inter-national teams set to challenge twoPSL

teams in a two-day double header soccer ex-travaganza.

TheCity ofCapeTownhas announced thatthe Cape Town Cup soccer tournament willsee host team Ajax Cape Town welcome Por-tuguese team Sporting Club de Portugal aswell as English Premier League team Crys-tal Palace FC and SuperSport United fromup country at the Cape Town Stadium nextweekend.

The first game on Friday, which kicks off

at 17:45, will see SuperSport United take onCrystal Palace.

Shortly after this, at 20:15, Ajax and Sport-ing go head to head.

Sunday’s action will start at 13:00 with thelosers of Friday’s two matches challengingeach other.

The final, at 15:30, will be contested be-tween the winners of the games played onFriday.

Should there be a tie after regulation time,a penalty shoot-out will decide the winnerof the Cape Town Cup.

Ajax Cape Town is privileged to host Sport-ing, Crystal Palace and SuperSport Unitedfor the inaugural Cape Town Cup.
