The National Department of En-vironmental Affairs is expectingthe Chevron Refinery based inMilnerton to cut its sulphur di-oxide (SO2) emissions by half by2020.

Despite Chevron currently com-plying with regulations as stipulat-ed in its Atmospheric Emission Li-cence, the stricter regulations willmean that it will require significantinvestment to accomplish ambientair quality improvements.

Subcouncil 3 chairperson JamesVos, and the City of Cape Town AirPollution Monitoring Unit havebeen keeping a close eye on the re-finery and the air quality in the vi-cinity.

According to air quality data of

2010, the refinery’s average outputof SO2 is much lower than in mostof the country.

Air quality is measured consist-ently in Athlone, Bellville South,Goodwood, Bothasig, Table View,Wallacedene, Killarney and even inSomerset West.

The annual average for these are-as hovers between three and fiveSO2 parts per billion (ppb), whereasin places such as Emalahleni (Wit-bank) and Ermelo the SO2 outputaverages an astonishing 19ppb.

The decent air quality measure-ment is, however, far from ideal.

With stricter regulations it isclear that the City of Cape Town istightening its grip even more.

Vos carries the community’s in-terest at heart, but he stays fair: “Itmust be considered that the refin-ery operates in a competitive envi-

ronment and any unjustified emis-sions controls would impact ontheir viability to operate. Thiswould impact severely on CapeTown’s economy in that fuel priceswould increase – particularly LPGgas which impacts the tourism andhospitality industry.”

A phased approach for compli-ance with emission standards has,nonetheless, been adopted by theNational Department of Environ-mental Affairs.

It requires that by 2015, the refin-ery will be required to emit a maxi-mum daily average of 0.8 kilo-grammes per tonne of crude oilthroughput and that by 2020, it willneed to half its daily average of SO2to 0.4 kilogrammes per tonne ofcrude oil throughput.

Nitrogen dioxide emissionsstandards of 1 700 microgrammes

per cubic metre need to be met by2015, but this figure decreases tojust 250 microgrammes by 2020.

Particulate matter will be limitedto 120 microgrammes per cubic me-tre by 2015, which will come downto just 50 microgrammes per cubicmetre in 2020.

Maximum fines for serious non-compliances include a five-year jailterm or an equivalent fine or bothunder the Air Quality Act, but theEnvironmental Laws AmendmentBill is proposing an increase inthese fines to 10 years’ jail term oran equivalent fine or both. Thisserves as a strong deterrent to non-compliance.

Vos concludes: “I’d like to reporton a meeting I recently had with adelegation from the Chevron Refin-ery and the City of Cape Town AirPollution Monitoring Unit. It has

long been a concern to me that therefinery is seemingly having a neg-ative impact, from a pollution per-spective, on adjacent communities,including our own. However, I ampleased to tell you that the meetingwas constructive, and assuranceshave been given that the various is-sues I raised will be investigated. Iwill, of course, keep everyone in-formed of my progress.”

According to www.cleanair-trust.org, adverse health effects ofhigh concentrations of SO2 includebreathing problems with asthmaticchildren and adults who are activeoutdoors.

SO2 and nitrogen oxides are themajor precursors of acid rain,which acidifies soils, lakes andstreams, accelerates corrosion ofbuildings and monuments, and re-duces visibility.

New markers: Some local residents have wondered about theseposts that were recently erected along Milnerton Lagoon. Accordingto Chevron’s communications manager Suzanne Pullinger they areChevron pipeline markers and serve to indicate where the lines runfor the benefit of anyone planning to do work in the vicinity of thepipeline. “It is a licence requirement that all servitudes are clearlymarked and Chevron adheres to this,” Pullinger says. The Chevronpipelines have always had markers, which were put in place when thepipeline was installed. However, over the years they became less visible as they were damaged, removed or buried and were illegible. Thesemarkers are the replacement markers which are now more visible.Pullinger added that Chevron carries regular inspections of the effluent line, to adhere to the water licence requirement by the Departmentof Water Affairs. The temporary closing of a busy road inTable View last week had hordes of mo-torists fuming and not only from their ex-haust pipes.

Motorists making their way down Blaauw-berg Road from Koeberg Road last Wednes-day were greeted with a traffic jam evenmore congested than usual following the clo-sure of Gie Road.

Although locals have become used to thetraffic nightmare that is Blaauwberg Road inpeak hours, having to contend with this situ-ation in the early afternoon caught many off-guard.

One resident who was very agitated at thestate of affairs is Alex Lepnik.

“I had to go to Killarney to drop off somegarden refuse and on my way back I sat intraffic for an hour. Running a business is im-possible with all this digging going on inBlaauwberg Road,” said Lepnik who owns agarden service business.

Lepnik who also serves on the executivecommittee of the Table View Ratepayers’ As-sociation was especially enraged about thefact that the closure of Gie Road was not ad-vertised beforehand.

“We have been in meetings with the MyCi-Ti officials in the past about previous inci-dents where road lanes were closed withoutnotice. They promised us that it wouldn’thappen again, but it happened again andagain after that,” a very emotional Lepniksaid.

for transport, roads and stormwater says theincident was due to unplanned emergencymaintenance work that had to be done in GillRoad on the south side of Blaauwberg oppo-site Gie Road.

“The contractor damaged an Eskom elec-trical cable which was not shown on theirdrawing and which their maintenance staffwas not aware of. The cable was also veryshallow. As this affected the electricity sup-ply in the area as well as the traffic signalsat the intersection, Eskom responded quick-ly and started repairs immediately despitethe rain,” Herron said.

It was this work that necessitated the clo-sure of the road. “The closure did not causethe back-up, but rather the non-functioningtraffic signals. A points man was requestedfrom traffic services,” Herron added.

Twee slagoffers van ’n beweerde laven-telhaan met ’n oënskynlike identiteits-krisis waarsku ander vroue om op die uit-kyk te wees vir dié man wat met systroopsoet beloftes geld uit hulle kry.

Hoewel minstens sewe vroue reeds dieslagoffer was van die man wat homself as adokter of veearts voordoen, word slegs tweekriminele sake tans by polisiestasies in dienoordelike voorstede ondersoek.

Albei vroue het sake van diefstal en intimi-dasie geopen teen die man bekend as Gert Ja-cobus van Tonder, maar ook die naam G.J.en Van Rooyen gebruik.

Die vroue se verhale stem baie ooreen.Kort ná G.J. hulle ontmoet, “leen” hy glo

geld vir verskeie redes. ’n Gunstelingrede isvir die aankoop van eksotiese voëls – sy stok-perdjie – ’n ander is vir mediese voorraad.

Een keer was dit “om mense te betaal watsy swembad herstel het” en in een geval selfsvir ’n televisie en DVD-speler. Van sy belof-tes om die geld terug te betaal, kom niks.

Twee van die slagoffers met wie G.J. in dieafgelope maande uitgegaan het, het hom opdie sosiale aanlynnetwerk Badoo ontmoet en’n derde vrou het hy by ’n plaaslike casinogenader.

Een van die vroue, Vanessa Bagmin vanPanorama, het hom as G.J. van Tonder by ’nplaaslike casino ontmoet. “Hy het vir my ge-sê hy is ’n veearts.”

Toe Vanessa se eksman Johan Maritz egtersy honde na G.J. se praktyk wou neem, hethy skielik sy storie verander en gesê hy hetnie ’n praktyk nie, maar locum.

Haar minnaar se ontrouheid het aan dielig gekom toe hy een oggend haar motor ge-leen het en sy dit met die ingeboude opspo-ringstelsel na Somerset-Wes gevolg het.

Dís hoe sy van Valerie uitgevind het.Valerie (’n skuilnaam) van Somerset-Wes

sê G.J. “mors nie tyd nie”.“Twee dae ná ek hom op Badoo ontmoet

“Ek het slegs R1 800 by my gehad, wat ekvir hom geleen het,” sê sy. “Ek was sekerbaie naïef, maar hy lyk baie ordentlik,” sêValerie.

Nie lank daarna nie het G.J. voorgestel hyen Valerie begin ’n besigheid. Sy moesR30 000 gee om eksotiese voëls by ’n veilingte koop terwyl hy die hokke sou verskaf. Ditwas op pad terug van die veiling af wat sydie oproep ontvang het dat die motor voorhaar huis ’n “gesteelde motor” (Vanessa s’n)was.

“Hy het vir my gesê hy is ’n dokter wat asveearts spesialiseer en dat hy nie ’n praktykhet nie omdat hy eers onlangs klaar studeerhet,” sê ’n Table View-inwoner, Trish, wathom as Jacobus leer ken het. Trish wil nie

Oor die diefstalsake sê hy: “Hulle moet be-wys ek het die voëls gesteel. Julle vroumensekom weg met moord,” was sy antwoord aanTygerBurger.

Volgens George word sy lewe bedreig deurVanessa en haar vriende. “Hulle het gedreigom my uit te haal,” sê hy.

Hy sê hy skuld Vanessa niks, aangesien syglo van sy meubels en klanktoerusting het,asook televisiestel en DStv, wat sy ma na be-wering steeds betaal. “Die voëls van R25 000en hokke het sy steeds.”

Wat betref die bedrogsake sê hy: “Ek hettwee rekeninge en ek het in ’n stadium tjeksuitgeskryf, terwyl my geld eintlik in die an-der rekening was. Dit is níé kriminele sakenie, dit is misverstande,” hou hy vol.

George sê hy studeer tans vir ’n trauma-dokter, ná hy voorheen gestudeer het in vee-artsenykunde. “Ek het nooit gesê ek ís ’ndokter nie,” sê hy nou.

“As ek skelm was sou ek met al die goedwat gekoop is verdwyn het, maar die voël-hokke is nog by Vanessa,” sê hy.

Waar staan jy op hierdie oomblikmet jou lewe? Wat is die situasiemet betrekking tot jou verhou-dingslewe, jou familie, finansieel,beroep, gesondheid? Indien jy enigeomstandigheid van jou wil verbe-ter, moet jy nie wag vir iemand an-ders om dit vir jou te doen nie. Persoonlike leierskap sal van jouvergom ’nparadigmaskuif temaak.Jy sal dinge uit ’n ander hoek moetbekyk en nuwe planne moet maak.Neem bestek van jou huidige situa-sie en bepaal waar jy in die toekomswil wees.

Persoonlike leierskap vra van jouom soms radikaal in jou eie lewe inte gryp en ’n verandering te maak.Dit is dikwels ’n onaangename be-sluit wat jy oor jou eie lewe moet

Neem beheer en kontrole oor jou eie lewe

Having their headquarters in theheart of the newly formed TableBay Nature Reserve will greatlyhelp local conservationists toprotect the unique biodiversityfound only in Cape Town.

This was the sentiment of KoosRetief, manager of the newly pro-claimed Table Bay Nature Reserve.

The proclamation of this reserve– which now incorporates seven lo-cal protective portions of land un-der one entity – as well as the newlybuilt headquarters at Rietvlei wasofficially launched during a cere-mony on Wednesday.

“This is a process that started 12years ago and we feel we have nowtaken a massive step towards beingable to manage Rietvlei to the bestof our ability,” Retief said duringthe event which was attended by lo-cal Friends groups and dignitariesincluding the executive mayor ofCape Town, Patricia de Lille.

Retief extended an appreciativeword of thanks to the Friends of Ri-etvlei and the Friends of thePaarden Eiland Wetlands who

played a big role in uniting the sev-en parcels of conservation land un-der one name and managementbody.

The proposal to combine the Ri-etvlei wetlands, Milnerton lagoon,Milnerton beach, Milnerton racecourse, Zoarvlei wetlands (PaardenEiland wetlands), Diep River andthe Parklands fynbos corridor asthe Table Bay Nature Reserve,came about during a public partici-pation process early last yearwhich was part of the application toproclaim 15 sites with unique andcritical biodiversity as contract na-ture reserves.

The city’s plans to proclaim thesesites as contract nature reserveswere aimed at giving them greaterconservation protection.

Other speakers highlighted theimportant role Cape Town’s biodi-versity plays in tourism, job crea-tion and poverty alleviation.

“Cape Town only covers 0,1 per-cent of South Africa but has 18 per-cent of the country’s Red List spe-cies. Table Mountain for instancehas more plant species than theUK,” said the city’s Osman Asmal,director of environmental resource

management.Asmal added that tourism is the

cornerstone of the Cape Town econ-omy and that the city’s conserva-tion image is therefore a very pow-erful draw-card.

Louise Stafford, invasive speciesco-ordinator, stressed the currentthreat to the city’s freshwater bod-ies.

“The two main problems are pol-lution and invasive vegetation,”she said.

She said political will and sup-port through funding is what isneeded in the fight against invasiveplant species.

In her speech De Lille said thecity has put in place various envi-ronmentally friendly initiatives toensure that future generations cancherish the natural beauty of thelandscape of the city. One such ini-tiative is the Kader Asmal integrat-ed catchment management projectwhich aims to keep local rivers andwaterways clean.

“Theaimof theKaderAsmal inte-grated catchment managementproject is the restoration of ourfreshwater ecosystems throughbringing alien plant infestations

under control; addressing sourcesof pollution; raising awareness andthereby engaging civil society to be-come custodians of our freshwater;and ensuring long-term sustaina-bility through a river warden sys-tem,” De Lille said.

She added that the river wardensystem which ensures longer termjob creation is designed to serve asan early warning system for pollu-tion and alien plant invasions, acti-vating a rapid response before theproblem becomes wide-spread.

The average person in the City of CapeTown generates about 2kg of waste a day.A startling fact and something everyoneneeds to think about.

A few years ago the City of Cape Townlaunched the WasteWise programme to edu-cate communities in living a “greener” life-style.

As a legendary “ambassador” for this cau-se Zibi, the adorable mascot of yesteryearwas resurrected for the programme.

Famous for his anti-littering message, Zi-bi along with WasteWise is now approa-ching the third year back in the driving seat,with his age-old message: “Zappit in a Zibiand keep Cape Town beautiful!”

Last week Zibi was a guest of honour atthe Wastewise Year Two progress meeting,which was held at the Kraaifontein Integra-ted Waste Management Facility, and as usu-al used this opportunity to spread his messa-ge with passion.

Originally thebrainchild ofClaireMcKin-non and cartoonist Dov Fedler, Zibi wasborn in 1979 as part of the then Keep SABeautiful campaign. After this organisationdissolved in the 90s, Zibi went into retire-ment only to be re-called again with the ap-proach of the Soccer World Cup tournamentin 2010.

According to Wastewise spokespersonHugh Tyrrell, McKinnon (the previous headof Keep SA Beautiful), was the head of clean-sing at the City of Cape Town at the time,and thought it the perfect time to bring Zibiback.

The city purchased the rights to Zibi andhis catchy slogan and soon he was back tospread the message as part of Wastewise’seducation programme.

Wastewise is a public education program-

me of the city’s Solid Waste Management De-partment, which aims to raise awarenessand action among citizens to stop litteringand dumping, to minimise waste and recy-cle.

During the presentation several achieve-ments to date were accentuated.

According to Tyrrell, a total of 27 schoolshave been registered as WasteWise Eco-Schools – more than half way to the targetof 50 by 1 July 2013.

“Futher to this over 500 shools have beenengaged with in one way or the other, andthe Wastewise community facilitators areestablishing many worthwhile projects ran-ging from recycling through to food gar-dens,” he said.

Then they knit during the week and knitover the weekend. They will knit on publicholidays, knit when it rains and knit whenthe sun shines.

Suffice to say, the Nutty Knitters are nut-ty about knitting.

Forty two knitters now support variousorganisations by supplying them withwoolly items such as clothes, blankets, boo-ties and scarves.

Their passion becomes the needy’s fash-ion.

Melodie Potgieter (65) from Table Viewstarted Nutty Knitters eight months agoand now she has members who come fromas far as Edgemead and Milnerton.

“I woke up one day and decided to takecontrol of my life,” she says.

By doing so she has changed the lives ofthousands of others.

“Our objective it is to knit for charitieswithin our environment, particularly thosewhere children or the elderly are con-cerned. At present we support the LittleLambs in Du Noon, the Durbanville Chil-dren’s Home, Tygerberg Hospital, the SmileOrganisation, two old age homes in Wood-stock, as well as needy groups in Delft andAtlantis,” elaborates Potgieter.

It becomes crystal clear that Potgieter isa woman on a mission. She quotes AnneFrank when she says: “How wonderful it isthat nobody needs to wait a single momentbefore starting to improve the world!”

This rustic, round buttermilk bread, speck-led with bits of carrot and rosemary, has ascone-like texture. Best served fresh fromthe oven with lots of butter! For a warmingwinter meal, add a bowl of chunky homema-de soup. Equally delicious served at abrunch (with honey or green fig preserve)or at a braai (with sliced tomato and gratedcheddar cheese).

500 g self-raising flour5 ml (1 tsp) salt375 ml (1½ cups) coar-

fresh rosemary (optional)Preheat oven to 180ºC. Combine self-rai-

sing flour, salt, carrots, garlic and rosema-ry. Using a fork, mix in the buttermilk toform a soft dough. Knead briefly. The doughshould not be handled too much and shouldlook fairly rough to add to the rustic charac-ter of the bread. Place dough on a greasedbaking tray and press with fingers to forma 20 cm round. The shape does not have tobe perfect at all. With a sharp knife, cut adeep cross (not right through) in the top ofthe shaped dough and dust with the cakeflour.

If preferred, tuck a few small sprigs of ro-semary into the bread – this will make thebread look even more attractive. Bake forabout 40 minutes. Break into chunks andserve steaming hot with butter.

The horror ofmissing childrenNo parent can watch their children 24/7.There is no way one can control a child’senvironment, with whom they mix, orwhat information they receive all thetime. No matter how young or old yourchild is, every parent knows that there aretimes you simply have to trust that thechild will make the right choice.

In this era of internet surfing, constanttexting and sharing info over social net-works, this is even more true.

However, it’s only when we hear of chil-dren “just down the road” who are miss-ing, most probably as a result of social me-dia encounters which lead to face to faceintroductions that we sit up and take stockof our own efforts to avoid this.

Imagine the terror of realising yourchild is missing. After some frantic callsto her friends, you realise that she mightbe trapped in the horrible claws of someshady character on Facebook. The policetell you that she may soon be the victimof human trafficking or prostitution.

The only way parents can try and pro-tect their children is to teach them valuesand set a good example. Then trust that itwas enough for them to make the rightchoices under difficult circumstances.

And when they give in under the pres-sures of peers and bad adults, they shouldknow they can come to their parentswhere they will be loved.

We agree with Crous theobvious place for this second commercialcentre is along Voortrekker Road in Bell-ville, fed by the existing railway infra-structure – essential for a successful CBD.

Perhaps, as Planning’s Mr Rudman isquoted as saying in your article, “policyhas no force”, although you’d think itshould have.

What particularly concerns us aboutthis situation is where does this so calledsecond CBD expand to? Cities expand out-wards from their CBDs as business at-tracts business, but Tyger Valley is sur-rounded. To the north is our suburb, Ken-ridge, and the Durbanville Hillswinelands.

According to the policy documentsthese areas should be conserved. They are“good quality neighbourhoods ... it is notthe vision for these areas that the com-mercial precinct should expand into these(not now and not subsequent to the timeframe of the District Plan) ... businesscreep can easily threaten these areas and(they) must be protected against such on-slaughts ...” So if not into these areas, CityPlanners, how will your second CBDgrow? Or perhaps this protection for resi-dential areas is only the policy and policy,as City Planning says, “has no force”.

The Non-Governmental Organisation(NGO) People Living with Cancer, will behosting the first-ever Cancer Empower-ment Day in Cape Town on 14 July.

This NGO focuses on providing peer topeer support to recently diagnosed can-cer patients and support groups country-wide.

During the day, there will be an expertpanel and introductory topic discussionsentitled “Cancer advocacy in South Afri-ca”, “Cosatu and lessons learned: a survi-vor perspective”, “Cost of cancer care,medical perspective and the role of can-cer advocates”, and “Sadag: Health advo-cacy in action in South Africa”.

Registration starts at 08:30 and the pro-gramme starts at 09:00.

There is only space for 200 guests at thevenue (Crystal Towers African Pride Ho-tel in Century City), so it is important tobook a place to avoid disappointment.

The goals of such a patient empower-ment day is to identify a core groupof can-

cer survivors who will be willing to chal-lenge and mobilise actions in civil socie-ty, and to pressurise the powers that beto implement change in cancer servicesmodels in South Africa.

These type of events will launch theprocess of educating and empoweringcancer survivors and sufferers to becomeinvolved in advocating for the rights ofthose in need of access to cancer treat-ment and to raise many pressing issuesconcerning cancer.

The longer term focus will fall on thedevelopment and recruitment of a stronggroup of patient advocates for South Afri-ca and creating a new cancer advocacymovement in the country to strengthenthe work of People Living with Cancerand other cancer NGOs.

“They get treated like door-stops.”

Harsh words from a mother of aspecial needs child, who admits toonce having the same kind of atti-tude towards disabled people.

We see them sitting at a shop en-trance. People walk past pretendingnot to notice. Some might stare andothers will stop briefly to add a cointo the donations tin in front of them.

“I was that person,” saysFaranaaz Rinquest. “I used to lookat people and I felt sorry for them,it’s not to say people are not con-cerned or compassionate, but theydon’t really understand.”

Faranaaz’s reality changed on 23January 2008, a date now engravedon her memory. A heart procedureon her son Ziyaad went horriblywrong and left the then five-year-old with severe cerebral palsy.

“It was worse than death for me,that was how I felt, because theygave me someone else back.”

She resigned from her job andover the past four years most of herlife has revolved around takingcare of Ziyaad.

About a year ago things started toregress out of nowhere. Ziyaad’smobility slowed down, he couldn’tswallow properly and he developedapnea, where there is an impulsefrom the brain to stop breathing.

Increasing episodes of apnea ledto his readmission to the Red CrossChildren’s Hospital. After twomonths in hospital, with his dad athis side 24/7, Ziyaad is now back athome. His parents want to give him

comfort care.“The doctors asked me what I

think, whether he is regressing to-wards death, and I said, well he’sdefinitely going somewhere and it’snot the positive way. They saidwhenever we treat him, we’re nothealing him, we’re just interveningwith theprocess thathewill eventu-ally not be here any more. We’reputting his body through morework, because he has pushed fur-ther than what they expected for hiscondition,” she explains.

“He will have no further surgeryas any anaesthetic will be deadly.He cannot even be resuscitated. Sowe decided to give him comfort carefor these last months. No more anti-biotics, no more drips, no more in-terventions because his body is just

doing too much work.”The Rinquests are one of 28 fami-

Founder Sue van der Lindefeels strongly about a holisticapproach. She returned aftereight years in the UK, whereshe worked with the children’shospice Julia’s House. Backhome she was determined to

open a similar facility in the CapeTown area. According to Sue theoriginal intention of the charity

was to raise money to build a con-ventional children’s hospice. How-ever, in order to meet the needs ofthe children and families more ef-fectively, the charity has concen-trated its efforts firstly on provid-ing care in the families’ own homes.

At present Sue’s home in Welgele-gen doubles as an office from wheredonations are distributed and careworkers are trained. She is current-ly innegotiations to acquire abuild-ing to call their own, hopefully oneon the premises of the Karl Bremerhospital in Bellville.

Her vision is not that of a tradi-tional hospice, but rather to pro-vide a place where children are en-couraged to reach their full poten-tial, however limited that may be.“We aim to make Iris House a placewhere children can attend day ses-sions, overnight care and short res-pite periods, a home away fromhome.”

Metal bands will be invadingBuckleys in Edward Street thisweekend for To the Stage Two.

To the Stage is set to become aregular series of events on thenorthern suburbs calendar thanksto Numero Productions.

Alex Toua, from Numero, ex-plains that the concept was startedby Charl Strutt and Neil Schoe-man, who had been hosting rockshows in the area.

Alex, who is friends with Charl,was asked to help them break intoa heavier genre.

Buckleys recently acquired atheir entertainment licence andhosting the event there would helpNumero promote To the Stage andBuckleys as a live entertainmentvenue.

The first To the Stage was hostedin June as a rock event. The planis to alternate monthly betweenrock and metal events, giving localbands the opportunity to perform.

TheTo theStage eventnamewaschosen by means of a competition,while their logo was designed bya local art group, City Lights Col-lective.

Paul Bothners has come onboard as a sponsor for the eventsand Mirage Custom Tattoos willbe doing tattoo demonstrations atall the metal events.

Two of the bands performing atTo the Stage Two will be MarchingDead and Suiderbees.

Marching Dead, the brainchildof Igor Crouse, has been goingsince 2007. Their current line-upconsists of Pierre van Niekerk on

guitar, Christiaan Blom on bass,Werner von Waltsleben on drumsand Igor on guitar and vocals.

After a short sabbatical when Ig-or was overseas, the band startedhitting stages again at the begin-ning of the year, after performingat Rock the River.

Marching Dead, who have neverreleased any of their music, arehoping to have their debut EP,with the tongue-in-cheek title, The

Greatest Hits, ready for the showon Saturday.

“I think it’s ridiculous thatwe’ve never released anything,”Igor says, pointing out that mostof their fans know their songswell.

Alex points out that MarchingDead have opened a lot of doors inthe metal community since theirconception.

“They kind of set the level at

which bands are recognised froma professional side,” he says.

Suiderbees is an equally bigname in the metal community,having opened for internationalband, Fleshgod Apocalypse, whenthey toured SA.

The band, who has been togeth-er for about two and a half years,is also busy with its debut album,The Segregation, which they hopeto release in early 2013.

The band is made up of ColeGrainger on drums, Karin Preto-rius on keyboards, Marc Olwageon bass and lead vocals, Divan deKock on lead guitars and backupvocals and Dawie Pretorius onrhythm guitar.

Cole describes their music as “abit of everything”, while Marccalls it: “Epic music with a brutaltwist and a splash of melody”.

Virtuoso choreographer, Cindy vanAcker, is set to mesmerise in a magi-cal mix of body, spirit, sound andrhythm.

The Geneva-based choreographer Cin-dy van Acker will be visiting the south-ern African region for the first time, withtwo solos out of a series of six, which fo-cus on a sober, intimate, virtuoso explo-ration of body movement, through a slowinteraction with gravity.

The South African premiere of the twosolos, Lanx and Obtus will take place atthe National Arts Festival in Graham-stown.

In Cape Town she will present Fractie,which will be followed by a talk from theartist and a screening of the dance filmsmade on the six existing solos.

As part of the Cape Town experience,there will also be workshops with youthdancers and other dance companies atJoseph Stone Auditorium, hosted by

Eoan productions, delivered by the art-ist. These will precede the Lanx and Ob-tus performance at the same space.

Trained in classical ballet, Cindy vanAcker first worked in the Flanders RoyalBallet, Belgium.

After joining Geneva’s Grand Theatre,she began creating her own pieces in1994, and launched into an internationalcareer with Corps 00:00 at the GenevaADC in 2002.

She will be in Cape Town from 8 Julywith workshops for Eoan Group youthdancers, youth from schools, danceschools and communities.

On Tuesday 10 July she will be at Hid-dingh Hall at UCT from 17:30 with a per-formanceofFractieanda talk and screen-ing of the dance films.

On Wednesday 11 July she will be at theJosephStoneAuditorium from20:00withperformances of Lanx and Obtus.

A young sailor of the Milnerton AquaticsClub has been included in the national teamthat will be competing in the RS Tera WorldChampionships in Italy next month.

Matthew Allardice (14) is the only CapeTown sailor in the eight-man strong teamthat will be representing South Africaabroad.

Born into a keen sailing family, Matthew,a pupil at Melkbosstrand Private School,started sailing with his dad Paul at the ageof 10.

He soon became excited and passionateabout the sport of sailing. After his first yearon the water he took to sailing solo.

“I enjoy it, it’s fun and there are quite alot of races that you can compete in. Youhave to be quite smart to be able to get awayfrom the rest of the fleet in a race,” Matthewsaid, summing up the sport’s appeal.

This yearMatthewborrowedhismother’sRS Tera dinghy for local regattas.

“My goal was to finish in a top three rank-ing position.” His aim was to do well in thetop events within the Western Cape.

His consistency and perseverance paid off.Matthew secured a third place overall in boththe Eastern Province Championships andthe South African Sailing Youth NationalChampionships and a fourth place in the RSTera National Championships.

These top positions along with the pointshe accumulated in the rest of the regattas hecompeted in, saw him ranked third overallfor the annual selections, cementing his in-clusion in the SA team.

“It felt good to know that I got somewherewith my racing,” Matthew commented.

The world championships will take placeon Lake Iseo, located in Lombardy in north-ern Italy from 6 to 10 August.

According to the official website the cur-rentnumberof confirmedentries are 71,witheight countries from two continents beingrepresented. More entries are expected.

The cost involved to travel and compete

abroad is of course high but Matthew recentlyreceived some good news.

“The mayor of Cape Town said that shewould like to sponsor Matthew’s travel and ac-

commodation cost, seeing as he is the onlysailor travelling from Cape Town to competein the world championships,” Matthew’smother Michelle said on Monday.

Young sailor to represent SA at world champs

Officials hope the hosting of anew boxing tournament locallywill help to bring back the gloryboxing days of old in Cape Town.

The Western Cape Sports Schoolin Kuils River will host the SouthAfrican Elite Amateur BoxingChampionship from tomorrow to 7July.

“The glory days I refer to werewhen the likes of Cape boxingchampions such as Skeleton Mbo-ma, Sydney Hoho, Bashew Sibaca,Sipho Mange, Chris and BramleyWhiteboy dominated the South Af-rican boxing scene,” said Dr IvanMeyer, provincial minister of cul-tural affairs and sport at a medialaunch last week.

All nine provinces will be repre-

sented in this prestigious event.“I am particularly pleased that fe-

male boxers will also be participat-ing in this event as we have to en-sure that greater access happens sothat all boxers, irrespective of gen-der, are given the opportunity toparticipate and develop to their fullpotential,” Meyer said.

The tournament is seen as theperfect platform for the revival ofboxing in Cape Town and the prov-ince.

“The hard work starts now to en-sure that development grooms thenew crop of future stars.”

Boxing must play its role in pro-viding our disaffected youth withan alternative that they are exposedto on a daily basis in their respec-tive communities,” he added.

“Sport builds bridges. Sportmends and boxing which, when ad-ministered effectively, teaches val-ues of commitment, hard work, dis-cipline and physical and mental en-durance.”
