These youth are sometimes also deprived of parental love as parents are too occupied with their jobs or dysfunctional in their children’s lives. “In search of their own identity, youth are easily influenced by their peers. They befriend people who smoke and drink as they want to be ‘in the group’. “They think that smoking and drink- ing is a symbol of greatness which adds to the long list of being ‘macho’. They do not realise the deadly effects of smoking and drinking namely lung cancer, asth- ma, heart attack and strokes. With all these effects, they certainly do not have any bright future lying ahead of them.” Christian pointed out that in order to combat these bad habits, there are few solutions that should be taken by the so- ciety. “Firstly, the school should organise programmes to motivate students as well as advise them on the dangers of their fatal smoking and drinking habits. “Anti-drug and alcohol campaigns should be held at least twice a year in res- idential areas and parents should play a part in helping their children to choose the right friends. A group of good friends can guide and lead the youth to a better future. “Parents should also show their affec- tion for their children by spending more quality time with them. At this age, teen- agers need others to pay attention to them and cater to their needs,” he said. Gangsterism and bullying are also a daily occurrence at schools and this is causing problems. “Usually, this problem happens in the secondary school and the cause may be due to broken family background and fi- nancial issues. “Due to this, the crime rate involving youth has increased tremendously. Dis- satisfaction between the bully and his victim leads to revenge which can some- times cause injuries and even death. “We must also prevent the problem of gangsterism from spreading. One of the preventive measures is to give counsel- ling sessions to these problematic stu- dents. “They should be taught how to respect others regardless of the race, physical appearance or socio-economic back- ground. “Awareness campaigns should be or- ganised to make youth better individu- als. “They get treated like door-stops.”

Harsh words from a mother ofa special needs child, whoadmitsto once having the same kind ofattitude towards disabled peo-ple.

We see them sitting at a shopentrance. People walk past pre-tending not to notice. Somemight stare and others will stopbriefly to add a coin to the tin.

“I was that person,” saysFaranaaz Rinquest. “I used tolook at people and I felt sorry forthem, it’s not to say people arenot concerned or compassionate, but they don’t really under-stand.”

Faranaaz’s reality changed on23 January 2008, a date now en-graved on her memory. A heartprocedure on her son Ziyaadwent horribly wrong and left thethen five-year-old with severecerebral palsy.

Faranaaz recalls, “It wasworse than death for me ... be-cause they gave me someone elseback.” She resigned from her joband over the past four years mostof her life has revolved aroundtaking care of Ziyaad.

About a year ago things start-ed to regress out of nowhere. Zi-yaad’s mobility slowed down, hecouldn’t swallow properly andhe developed apnea, where thereis an impulse from the brain tostop breathing.

Increasing episodes of apnea

led to his readmission to RedCross. After two months in hos-pital, with his dad at his side24/7, Ziyaad is now back athome. His parents want to givehim comfort care.

Faranaaz explains, “The doc-tors asked me what I think, whether he is regressing to-wards death, and I said, well he’sdefinitely going somewhere andit’s not the positive way.

“They said whenever we treathim, we’re not healing him,we’re just intervening with theprocess that he will eventuallynot be here any more. We’reputting his body through morework, because he has pushed fur-ther than what they expected for

his condition.“He will have no further sur-

gery as any anaesthetic will bedeadly. He cannot even be resus-citated. So we decided to givehim comfort care for these lastmonths. No more antibiotics, nomore drips, no more interven-tions because his body is just do-ing too much work.”

The Rinquests are just one of28 families that Iris House Chil-dren’s Hospice is currently in-volved with. Iris House is one ofthis year’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can! concert’s benefi-ciaries, of which TygerBurger isthe media sponsor.

A group of American students is provingthat travelling is more than just the tour-ist thing.

Every year a group of students from theJohnson and Wales University in Provi-dence come to Cape Town as part of their“Study Abroad” programme, and each yearMimosa Primary School in Bonteheuwel isan important part of their travel plans.

Through their partnership with HoeriKwaggo Tours and Safaris, that arrangestheir travel arrangements, part of their itin-erary is visiting the school and other areaswhere they get to speak to the communitieson the Cape Flats.

This year that partnership had moremeaning as part of this initiative leaves be-hind something special that will benefit thecommunity – a play park for the children.

An important part of their time in the cityis a four-day adventure camp that involvesthe Grade 6 learners from the school and avisit to Robben Island.

All the expenses for the learners are spon-sored by students at the school.

The students all get a chance to visit theschool and surrounding areas to discoverthe circumstances of the children at theschool.

Last year the students were very moved bythe circumstances of children from the areabut noticed that there was no play area atthe school. They then decided that theywould collect money for the park, and oneof the students had a better plan.

Jessica Fernandez indicated that her par-ents would make the donation, and theywould like to do it in memory of her sister,Daniela, who died last year.

On Monday 25 June it all became a realityas the Daniela Fernandez Playpark was offi-cially launched by JWU students and learn-ers from the school.

Frederick Ross, principal of the school, thanked the students for their caring, andsaid that the partnership played an impor-tant part in motivating the learners to knowthat there are people in another part of theworld who cared about them.

Man vs machine vs the ladiesMale dominance will be underextreme threat on Saturday ascompetitors tackle the sixthFairbridge Mall BrackenfellGymkhana from 09:00 in whatmight well be tricky, wet, con-ditions.

Round four of the 2012 Witzen-berg Motorklub Gymkhana Se-rieswill haveanaddedattractionwith the presence of Anton Wan-nenburg and the much anticipa-ted, Gauteng-based, superchar-ged Ford Fiesta 1600.

However, never before havemen felt more uncomfortable astheir greatest threat on a wet sur-face will arrive in the minuteshape of Nashrene Schloss andLouise Appelgryn and their greatclass B Toyota Corolla Sprinter180i. Can they become the firstall-ladies combination to win aGymkhana overall?

As a fifth dan, Günther “Spi-derman” Appelgryn knows allabout the demands and he willhave his wife, Louise, filling thesuicide seat in the immaculateclass B VW Golf MkI 1800. Thispopular Brackenfell couple areanother combination capable oftaking overall honours.

“Vinnige” Fanie du Toit and

Kobus Wilson Jnr currently leadthe points war in their spectacu-lar class A Mazda Rustler LDV2.0 16v and they will have to fendoff the close attention of three-ti-me WBMK champions, Izak van

Zyl and Danye Louw, in their tur-bocharged class G Dynotech VWGolf GTi 2.0 Turbo.

Jacques du Plessis and DanyeLouw, another team who havetasted success at Fairbridge, and

their Du Plessis Auto class C To-yota Conquest RSi 1600 are pri-med for action.

Björn Venter and Jan van derVyver are the team to beat inclass D with their Race-Tech VW

Golf MkI 1.4i and rain may wellsee them challenge for overall ho-nours. Johann Zulch and Gr 10De Kuilen High School learnerTania Vermaak, are defendingtheir class E title with the CeresToyota E30 BMW 325iM but canexpect a serious challenge fromDeon and Maralize Conradie intheir FFR Buggy 2.3.

Class F is undoubtedly thetoughest class to crack at this sta-ge with the little Race-Tech Dat-sun Sedan of Herman Matheeand Ruan Reynders under threatfrom the Innovative WoodworkDatsun LDV 1600 of Anton Smitand Gavin Parsons. Ruan Reyn-ders and Herman Mathee changesides in the GX Sedan simply tospice up matters further.

For sheer pleasure the antics ofIzak van Zyl and Ettiene Swart intheir always sideways Nissan200SX Turbo will quickly becomecrowd favourites as will the V8powered E30 BMW of Mark Fon-tin and Hennie Odendaal.

A capacity entry is anticipatedfor the event and more informati-on can be found onwww.wbmk.co.za . Arrive early –follow the commentary – this ismotorsport for the people, by thepeople!

Günther Appelgryn (Brackenfell), a fifth dan inkarate, will compete in the Gymkhana.

SAREL BURGER

The first European Kyokushin Open held underthe newly formed Kyokushin World Union, re-cently took place in Moscow.

The aim of the tournament was to unite the dif-ferent organisations in order to get Kyokushinincluded in the International Olympic Commit-tee.

South Africa was represented by SiyabongaTyandela, multiple SA champion from the Pe-ninsula Technikon, who was accompanied byShihah Hennie Bosman, chairman of Ky-okushin-kan Africa.

In the third round Siyabonga received an inju-ry to his left knee against one of the top Russianfighters and lost in extra time. Bosman had thehonour of being selected as centre referee for thefinal rounds.

If all goes well karate as well as Kyokushin willbecome Olympic events in 2020.

Officials hope the hosting of anew boxing tournament locallywill help to bring back the gloryboxing days of old in Cape Town.

The Western Cape Sports Schoolin Kuils River will host the SouthAfrican Elite Amateur BoxingChampionship from tomorrow to 7July.

“The glory days I refer to werewhen the likes of Cape boxingchampions such as Skeleton Mbo-ma, Sydney Hoho, Bashew Sibaca,Sipho Mange, Chris and BramleyWhiteboy dominated the South Af-rican boxing scene,” said Dr IvanMeyer, provincial minister of cul-

tural affairs and sport at a medialaunch last week.

All nine provinces will be repre-sented in this prestigious event.

“I am particularly pleased that fe-male boxers will also be participat-ing in this event as we have to en-sure that greater access happens sothat all boxers, irrespective of gen-der, are given the opportunity toparticipate and develop to their fullpotential,” Meyer said.

The tournament is seen as theperfect platform for the revival ofboxing in Cape Town and the prov-ince.

“The hard work starts now to en-sure that development grooms the

new crop of future stars.”Boxing must play its role in pro-

viding our disaffected youth withan alternative that they are exposedto on a daily basis in their respec-tive communities,” he added.

“Sport builds bridges. Sportmends and boxing which, when ad-ministered effectively, teaches val-ues of commitment, hard work, dis-cipline and physical and mental en-durance.”

THOMAS CAROLUS

The People’s Team are out of the PSL!Engen Santos’ fate was sealed at the Philip-

pi Stadium on Saturday afternoon when theylost 4-3 to Chippa United, who will now playin the PSL next season.

“This is a great achievement by ChippaUnited following what has been an impres-sive run both in the First Division and subse-quently in the Promotion Play-off,” said PSLCEO Stan Matthews.

“They have earned their place and I wouldlike this opportunity to congratulate the clubmanagement, the coaching staff, the playersand their fans for achieving this remarkablefeat.

“Judging from the excitement and passionfrom the fans in Philippi, there is no doubt

in my mind that Chippa United will enjoygreat support from the football family.”

Chippa United’s ascendance tells a fasci-nating story. After only one season in theSecond Division two seasons ago, theygained promotion to the First Division.Their stay in the country’s second highestleague lasted only 11 months as they nowfind themselves in the Premier Division.
