CRIME: COMMUNITY TIP-OFFS HELP
Powerful police punchFighting crime in the community is in
the spotlight with the police makingmajor moves to improve safety in the
suburbs. In the past week the Nyanga cluster polic-
ing precinct arrested more than 260 sus-pects. These suspects were apprehendedduring various operations conducted inBishop Lavis, Elsies River, Gugulethu, Ma-nenberg, Nyanga and Philippi East.According to police spokesperson Captain
Marie Louw there were a number of arrestsand successes achieved during these crime-fighting operations.“182 suspects were apprehended during
searches at drug houses and stop and searchoperations where warrants of arrests werealso issued,” she says.“Operationswere also conducted at 40 she-
beens, which led to 19 people arrested for
dealing in liquor without licences.“Tracing operations were conducted with
30 wanted suspects arrested. 30 suspectswere also apprehended for crimes commit-ted against women and children.”She added that 521 visitsweremade to spa-
za shops and 13 visits to second-hand goodsshops. Sixty-one vehicle control points wereheld.“Some suspectswere apprehended for cas-
es ranging frommurder, assault with the in-tent to do grievous bodily harm, attemptedmurder, robbery, possession of stolen prop-erty and driving under the influence of li-quor.”Some of the incidents that Louw high-
lights include:. On Wednesday last week officers from
Bishop Lavis were busy following up on in-formation received about a murder suspect,
when they saw two unknown men runninginto a house in Bishop Lavis. They followed the two men and searched
them, finding an unlicensed firearm withone magazine and seven rounds, tik, man-drax and a scale in their possession.
. In an incident on Thursday 2 July thecrime prevention unit in Bishop Lavis re-ceived reliable information from the com-munity that drugs were kept on premises ata house in Valhalla Park. When the police searched the premises
they found 67 cut mandrax half-tablets and15 whole mandrax tablets. These successes, she says, are a result of
police officers’ diligence and vigilance andsome were through information shared byresponsible community members.“People are always complaining that we
are not reacting to their information,” says
Louw. “But, these exercises and arrestsprove that we are taking action when we getinformation from the public. We are warn-ing these criminals that their neighbour-hoods are not looking the other way and wewill continue to take drastic action againstthem to maintain safety.”With information from the public an im-
portant tool in the fight against crime, thepolice are seekinghelp in solving someof thefollowing crimes:
. On Friday last week at 21:30 two occu-pants of a car were waiting in the drive-through at KFC Airport Mall, Belhar whenthey were accosted by two unknown men intheir early twenties. The suspects held them up at gunpoint,
threw them out of the car and sped off withthe car in an unknown direction.

Leo Mews on full power soon
Electricity will be in place for all residents at Leo Mews soon. PHOTO: GARY VAN DYK
Electricity will soon be part of life for allresidents living at the LeoMews devel-opment in Elsies River.
This development in Leonsdale was con-verted to City rental units. The units were initially being built for
sales purposes, but vandalism affected thepower supply to some of the units. Now allsystems are in place for the all the installa-tions made to become fully functional.LeoMews consists of 125 completed rental
units and forms part of the administration’scommitment to redress, through the provi-sion of rental opportunities for those whoqualify. The City’s human settlements directorate
currently has two contractors on site restor-ing the electricity supply to the last 35 unitsat the development. This includes rewiring or replacing plugs
and the installation of electricity dispenseunit (EDU) meters. This means the entire complex will soon
have access to electricity. Before the 35 tenants were allocated these
units, they were informed that the dwell-ings had been badly vandalised. They were also told the process had been
started to assign contractors to restore theelectricity supply and to replace the elec-tricity (EDU) meters. This currently costs the City approxi-
mately R250 000.“The City wants to thank the residents of
Leo Mews for their patience during the en-tire process,” said theCity’sMaycomemberfor human settlements, Benedicta van Min-nen.“This includes [the time it is taking] now,
while the electricity is being restored andthe EDU meters are being replaced as a re-sult of vandalism which took place prior totheir occupancy.“The process of appointing the electrical
contractors has taken some time, as the nec-essary processes needed to be followed.
“As a caring City, we are pleased to seethat all the families living at Leo Mews willbe able to enjoy the benefits of having elec-tricity in their homes, especially now, dur-ing winter.”Council approved the City’s acquisition
of the Leo Mews development from Stan-dard Bank in January 2014. As such, 90 of
the units at Leo Mews are brand new.Standard Bank could not sell these units
in the Gap market as they had intended to,and the City therefore acquired the proper-ty at a much lower rate than what it cost todevelop the property. To date, all the unitshave been allocated to beneficiaries, includ-ing elderly tenants.

The art of the big band was intown last week when theStockholm Jazz Orchestra vi-
sited the city and got to share theirpassion with the Delft Big Band. The world-renowned ensemble
from Sweden performed with sing-er Gavin Minter at the Baxter onTuesday last week after perform-ances in Grahamstown.Thesemusicians have a long his-
tory ofmusical collaborationswiththe city. Minter has recorded andperformed with them on severaloccasions, and they added to theirvisit by hosting a workshop withthe Delft Big Band at the rehearsal
room in Airport industria. The visiting musicians were
very impressed with the talentedyoungsters from the local band andmotivated them with advice onhow to improve their talent.
AdviceFredrik Noren, leader of the
StockholmJazzOrchestra, pointedout the importance of constantpractice and sight reading.“For suchayoungbandyouhave
a good sound and it’s always im-portant to work on how you cansound better, together,” he told theyoungsters.“It’s not always easy but you
must start working on being ableto double in the woodwind section.
That way you can always get morework in big bands, because a lot ofcharts require you to switch toclarinet or flute from time to time.”Delft trumpeter Lorenzo Bli-
gnaut said that he and his fellowmembers really enjoyed the work-shop.“For me it was an honour and
privilege to be able to be in the
presence of one of the world’s bestbig bands,” he said.“We learned so much from them
and I’m so grateful that we wereable to play some of their musicthat they donated to us. I hope thatthey come back soon.”Delft musical director Ian Smith
was also excited about the visit andpointed out that these experiences
could only motivate the band tokeep on improving.“We were also in Grahamstown
and packed out the performanceswith standing ovations at everyconcert,” he said.“But it’s when you have a work-
shop like this that you learn howto improve and hone your craft asa big band musician.”The saxophone section of the two bands join forces during the workshop.
The homeless in Elsies River re-ceived a helping hand to keepwarm this winter at the begin-ning of July.Over 200 homeless people (in-
cluding about 30 children) in direneed of warm clothing, blankets, food and other items tohelp themthrough the chilly weather, wereassisted at the Pam Golding Pro-perties’ Street Store. The event was held onMonday
6 July at the Elim Night Shelterin Elsies River.“The event was a huge success
andwewere able to provide themall [clients] with more than fouritems of clothing each,” saysCharlton Williams, area princi-pal for the property group inGoodwood, Athlone and Belhar.“In addition to the clothes, we
distributed 30 blankets, 50 pairsof socks and 50 beanies as well asproviding at least two helpingseach of food, including soup, cur-ry and rice, rolls and cold drinks.“Our sincere thanks and ap-
preciation also goes to VGV At-torneys, who partnered with usfor this event, for their help and
generosity, and to clients, fami-lies and friends, as well as ourown staff and agents for donatingclothing and other useful items.”All the clothes that were left at
the end of the day were handedover to the shelter for their thrift

A community in Delft has startedusing soccer to combat dumping, gang activity and drug abuse intheir area.Residents of Rosendal got togeth-
er and organised a soccer festivalon twoconsecutiveSaturdays fromthe beginning of this month.“We took this initiative to devel-
op a better and active community,”says one of the organisers, GodwinBlignaut.“The festival involved all ages.
The objective was not to competefor any awards but just to play andbreak barriers between the youthsfrom different streets and areas toshow how there is strength in uni-ty.”Godwin also points out that the
event was also to bring attention tothe lack of resources in the areaand the need to keep open spacesclean.“The field where we played is
used as a dumping site, so we, asa community, had to come together
to clean it up and transform it intoa field of hope,” he says.Godwin says theorganiserswere
very happy to see how this eventbrought people and families to-gether.“While the teamsplayed, the par-
ents and general community cameout to cheers the teams on.“This was a chance for the pa-
rents and community to see thatour youngsters have sporting abili-ties and skills.“We hope that one of the results
of this initiative is that it played apart in reducing the gang activitiesin the area aswell as drug and alco-hol abuse.”Godwin explains that they want
to organise similar events on a reg-ular basis.“We need more people in our
communities involved in similarprogrammes and we call on the au-thorities to play their part in help-ing to develop this initiative.“More open spaces must be de-
veloped so that they don’t becomedumping zones – theymust becomeareas of hope.”
Soccer gives hope
Exciting soccer with players of all ages was the order of the day when asoccer festival was hosted in Rosendal.

Some ideas are just better ifthey’re shared. All the more soif they are innovative, creativeand attempt to change – and im-prove – existing ones. This was the case at the TEDx
event held at the University ofthe Western Cape on Saturday.A number of innovators, en-
trepreneurs, game-changersand experts from across thecountry shared their own andcollective vision for the holisticadvancement and developmentof South Africa. It was no surprise the event –
which stems from the internati-onal TED, a non-profit organisa-tion devoted to “ideas worthsharing” – was held in Bellvilleand hosted by the Greater Ty-gerberg Partnership (GTP).The GTP is, of course, the or-
ganisation that works with itsbusiness, academic and otherpartners towards the develop-ment of the larger Tygerberg re-gion. This region is touted bythe City of Cape Town as the se-cond economic heart of the city.
PossibilitiesOn Saturday various spea-
kers, in a jam-packed program-me, shared their ideas onhow topioneer possibilities for changeacross various spheres, linkinginto the event theme of “pionee-ring possibilities”.Siraaj Adams, the executive
manager of the HIV portfolio atthe Metropolitan Health Group, said his team was finding prac-
tical, sustainable solutions inpartnership with the nationaldepartment of health in a num-ber of projects, using technolo-gy.Glen Gillis, the manager of
SeaMonster Entertainment, ex-plained in depth the merits ofand psychology behind usinggaming to resolve conflict situa-tions in real life.
SOSYaseen Khan, a medical doc-
tor, likened the country to an“ill person”, citing medicalpractitioners as the “whiteblood cells” fighting to keep thecountry’s immune system run-ning effectively. His idea was asimple messaging app to sharemedical expertise to the remo-test locations in the country.MarlizeHoltzhausen, founder
of Rapid Response, an emergen-cy reaction service, explainedhow its emergency response tagcame into being. The duo of Jacques Steyn and
Sonja Cillie, or 4Midable, sho-wed their musical innovationusing just a voice and bass gui-tar in their rendition of a DianaKrall jazz song, “My love is”.Just before the lunch break,
25-year-old entrepreneur andbusiness owner Gareth Duncanshared his own experience ofhaving achieved both businessfailure and then success after ta-king on a partner. The rest of the day saw a fur-
ther number of speakers takingto the red dot podium to sharetheir great ideas and innovati-ons.

There are four initiation sites for youngXhosa men in the hills of Mfuleni and Delft.
Many initiates die across the countryyearly due to botched circumcisions. Fema-le genital mutilation, on the other hand, isless common, although it is prevalentamong some Muslim groupings.
With Bellville’s rising Somali population,TygerBurger asked local hospitals for any
signs of this dated traditional practice.James Vught, hospital manager of Melo-
med in Bellville, says: “Since being at Bell-ville, not one incident [has occurred].”
Laticia Pienaar, spokesperson of Tyger-berg Hospital, says: “According to the headof gynaecology and obstetrics at TygerbergHospital, no specific cases were treated forbotched female circumcision to date.”
Louis Leipold’s Hermien Everts says: “AtMediclinic Louis Leipoldt we were fortuna-te enough not to have dealt with any cases.”

REMO ANDREWS
The battle lines were drawn at the CapeSun Hotel last week as some of theworld’s strongest chess players gath-
ered to contest this year’s South AfricanOpen Chess Festival. The event was supported by the Western
Cape department of cultural affairs andsport.Advocate Lyndon Bouah, chief director of
sport and recreation, says: “In developing awinning nation it is important to improveinternational sports successes by support-ing events at all levels.“Achieving an active and winning nation
is underpinned by an enabling environ-ment.“The staging of this event at the Cape Sun
is part of our campaign to bring big sportevents to the Western Cape.”South Africa’s first ever grandmaster,
Kenny Solomon, marked his return to com-petition on SouthAfrican soil, whichwas al-so his first tournament on home soil after of-ficially receiving the title of grandmasterearlier this year.Solomon, originally from Mitchell’s Plain
and a previous winner of the tournament, placed fourth in this year’s tournamentwitha score of 8.5.
“It was a tough tournament with a lot ofstrong players. I amhappy thatwewere abletohave four grandmasters participating thisyear,” he says.“It is important that foreign grandmasters
participate in South African chess events –this is how chess can grow in our country.”The tournament also incorporated the SA
schools individual chess championship. Thechampionship saw some of the best juniorplayers in the country come up against eachother.Formernational junior teamcoachCalvin
Klaasen believes young players have an op-portunity tomake a career of the game if thesupport shown at the SA Open continues togrow.“It’s important for youngplayers to identi-
fy with heroes, to have something to strivefor.“There are limited opportunities for
young players in South Africa to progress toa professional level at the moment, but thatcan change if we are supported correctly.Kenny’s grandmaster title is just step one inSouth Africa becoming a powerful chess
country,” he says.Solomon, who now lives in Italy, believes
events of this nature need to happen moreoften if we are to produce more internation-al-grade players.“Chess events like these help people build
connections as we were there competing forover a week, so apart from the playing thereis also the post-game analysis and it’s inthese sessions where chess players can takethe opportunity to learn even more,” hesays.English chess legend grandmaster Nigel
Short emerged victorious at the end of the11-round event. He gained the title based ona tie-break system, after ending on ninepoints alongside grandmaster Aleksa Strik-ovic from Serbia and India’s grandmasterAbhijit Kunte.Short has been playing with the best since
he became a grandmaster at age 19. He wasregularly placed in the top ten in the worldbetween the late 1980s and late 1990s.He became the first English player to play
for the World Chess Championship titlewhen he played against Garry Kasparov in1993.Solomonwill next travel to Gauteng along
with Short to play in a qualifier for one ofthe biggest chess tournaments in the worldtaking place in Las Vegas.
