Hoewel die uitvoerende burgemeestervan Kaapstad, Patricia de Lille, dieaanval op twee hawelose mans deur

sekerheidswagte sterk veroordeel het, houdie gemeenskap vol dat owerhede nie genoeg

doen om probleme aan te spreek wat deurdie grootskaalse instroming van hawelosesin woonbuurte veroorsaak word nie.

Drie sekerheidswagte van SJC Sekuriteithet die mans Sondagnag na bewering metverfbalgeweer-balletjies toegetakel, terwylhulle op stadsgrond in die Brackenfell-woon-buurt Proteahoogte geslaap het.

“Die skerp ligte van die flitse in my oë hetmy wakker gemaak. Ek het net gehoor hoeskreeu die wagte vir mekaar, ‘daar’s hulle!’en die volgende oomblik toe begin hulleskiet,” vertel ’n erg getrau-matiseerde Ariel Delie (31).

Delie en sy vriende, RalfJafta (18) en Jason Moore(23), sê hulle slaap die afgelo-pe vyf jaar al tussen die koeja-welbome op die stadsgrond inJakarandastraat.

“Ek het gehoor hoe reën dieballetjies op en deur die seilen toe begin ek hardloop. Hul-le het aanmekaar geskiet opmy bene en rug, my hele lyf,tot ek later meters verder in-mekaar gesak het,” vertel hyen wys na die groot rooi ron-de rowe en ander kneusplek-ke oral op sy rug.

Jafta het gou genoeg weggekom, maarMoore is teen die kop geskiet en het ligtehoofbeserings opgedoen.

Die mans het weggehardloop en by ’n na-bygeleë winkelkompleks weggekruip waarander sekerheidswagte later die polisie ge-skakel het.

Volgens Delie het die Brackenfell-polisiealbei mans na die Kraaifontein-daghospitaaltoe vervoer waar hulle behandel is.

Delie sê X-strale het ’n besering aan syknie getoon, terwyl Moore glo ’n bloedklontop sy brein ontwikkel het na aanleiding vandie aanval. “Ons het niks gedoen nie! Dieaanval was met opset,” sê Delie.

“Ek voel glad nie lekker oor wat gebeurhet nie. Hulle het my baie seergemaak – nienet fisiek nie, maar ook in my hart. Dis on-regverdig wat hulle gedoen het en daar isnou so baie woede binne-in my. Geen geldkan dit ooit regmaak nie!” het hy gesê.

“Ons skarrel maar om aan die lewe te bly,doen hier en daar tuinwerk en krap in diedromme. Werk is skaars en ons sukkel om’n bestaan te maak,” voeg hy by.

Die drie wagte wie se name nie bekend ge-maak is deur die Brackenfell-polisie nie, hetverlede week op 8 April in die Kuilsrivier-landdroshof verskyn op ’n aanklagte vanaanranding met die opset om ernstig te be-seer. Die saak is uitgestel vir verdere onder-soek.

De Lille het Maandag gesê sy is verheugoor die feit dat die verdagtes wel in hegtenisgeneem is. “Nou moet die reg sy gang gaan,”sê sy.

Vol-gens McCleland was daar indie laaste tyd ’n groot toe-vloei van haweloses in die

woonbuurte van Brackenfell, wat tot die ont-staan van talle probleme gelei het.

“Baie van die haweloses se gedrag is ’n er-gernis vir inwoners. Hulle ontlas in die par-ke waar kinders speel, word gereeld dronk,dreig soms die kinders en slaap dan netdaar,” sê hy.

“Dan is daar ook die oneindige problememet hoe hulle die area bemors en nie skoon-maak nie,” voeg hy by.

“Dit maak nie saak wat die gemeenskapdoen om van die mense te bemagtig of te helpnie, hulle val baie vinnig weer by hul ou pa-trone in,” sê hy.

McCleland sê die gemeenskap is baie ge-frustreerd en dat plaaslike owerhede baiemeer sal moet doen om die kwessie aan tespreek. “Waar gaan dit eindig? Die buurt-wagte kan niemand arresteer nie en die pro-bleem raak net erger, terwyl wetstoepassersnie genoeg doen om dit aan te spreek nie,”sê McCleland.

Charl du Toit, eienaar van SJC Sekuriteit,sê dat die wagte ter sprake die betrokke aandgereageer het op ’n situasie en dat sy onder-soek in dié stadium dui dat die wagte nieskuldig is aan enige misdaad nie.

“SJC kan nie in hierdie stadium ’n volleverklaring gee nie, omdat die saak nog on-dersoek word. Verdere kommentaar kanmoontlik die uitkoms van die ondersoek be-lemmer,” het hy aan TygerBurger gesê.

Major inconvenience for motorists isexpected when a part of RacecourseRoad in Durbanville will be closed

for two-weeks while bluegum (Eucalyptus)trees up to 150 years old will be cut back.

The road will be closed from next weekMonday (20 April) to Sunday 3 May from08:30 to 15:30 while the City’s parks depart-ment “tops” 240 large Eucalyptus treesalong the road between St John’s Road andTygervalley Road. Thework entails cuttingmajor trunks down to a height of between10 to 15 metres.

The trimming of historic bluegum treesis a sensitive issue in Durbanville. The“hacking” of bluegum trees on the cornerof St John’s and Racecourse Roads in May2011 had residents and conservationists upin arms.

Vergesig residents are concerned theirview of the rural landscape will be spoiltand their buffer against wind and trafficnoise will be removed.

According to Dr Nico Walters, foundingmember of the Durbanville Heritage Socie-ty, this historic avenue of trees in Race-course Road dates back 150 years and de-marcates the oldwagon route betweenCapeTown, Wagenmakersvallei (Wellington),Roodezand (Tulbagh) and other areas.

“It resembles the old Durbanville lane ofbluegumtrees fromDurbanville toBellvillestation (today Durban Road), which wasdestroyed for development,” Walters said.

The same section ofRacecourseRoadwasclosed for a week in June last year whilethe trees were pruned after several bran-ches fell on the road, in one incident cau-sing about R92 000 damage to a car.

In another accident, a mother had todrive over a branch in Racecourse Roadwhen it fell in front of her car, causing con-siderable damage.

A huge bluegum tree also fell across Ty-gervalley Road, in front of oncoming cars.

In November 2012 the City had to cut alane of bluegum trees in Bowlers Avenueafter a huge tree fell onto the road.

George Sieraha, chairperson of the Dur-banvilleCommunityForum, said “the trim-ming of trees has always been a sensitiveissue”.

He said in the past lanes of trees had beenseverely cut, causing an outcry from thecommunity.

“The tree lanes are part of our heritageand should be preserved as far as possible.Safety of the residents is of course of para-mount importance so there will be occasi-ons where trees have to be trimmed. The is-sue is not the trimming, but how it is done.

“It is easy to hack a tree, but quite ano-ther thing to leave the tree resplendent andneat,” he said.

Nico Köhne, whose property in FivazStreet borders the Altydgedacht vineyards,fears theywill be bothered by thewind oncethe trees have been topped.

“Where we now have a view of the laneof trees and Table Mountain, we will haveto look right onto the houses at the oppositeside. The trees also block the noise from theroad,” he said.

He says he fears the Citywill deliberatelycut the trees so drastically theywill die andcan be removed to widen the road.

Mayco member for community servicesand special projects, Belinda Walker, saidalthough topping of the trees was a drasticmaintenance measure, it was necessary toreduce tree-related risks along the road inthe long term.

“This includes the risk of long branchesbreaking and falling onto the road or entiretrees toppling over,” said Walker.

“Trees are valuable assets andCity Parkstakes careful decisions to ensure their sus-tainability. The department undertook athorough investigation into the safety ofthe trees, which included the considerationof consultant arborist studies,” she said.

“Topping (or lopping) appears to be thebest long term maintenance solution.”

A Northpine family returning homefrom church was held at gunpoint forhalf an hour during a house robbery

last week.According to the Kraaifontein police, six

men, four of whom were armed, arrived atthe family’s house in AlmeriaWay at about21:30 on Wednesday.

“My brother just got home from churchwhen he was apprehended in the drivewaywhile busy opening the garage door,” a fam-ily spokesperson toldTygerBurger onMon-day.

“Four of themen tookmybrother into thehouse through the garagewheremymotherwas waiting for him. They were then bothtaken to a room and covered in blanketswhile guns were pointed at them and thehouse ransacked,” he said.

Half an hour later his father also arrivedat home from church, alerting the two menwaiting outside in the getaway car.

They reportedly phoned the robbers in-side the house to warn them.

“The robbers ran outside and orderedmydad out of his car at gun point. In the confu-sion and shock of it all he resisted, uponwhich two shots were fired at him, bothmissed.

“He screamed at my brother who camerunning out to help him. He too was shotat twice, but again they missed,” he says.

The robbers fled the scene in a white VWPolo with a flat screen television, two lap-tops, phones, shoes, clothing andmany oth-er household items, said police spokesper-son Lieutenant Thembi Gwe.

“Police are still looking for the suspectsand anyone who might have informationthat can lead to their arrest can contact De-tective Constable Siyabonga Mthembu on079 894 0058 or our police crime stop line on08600 10111,” she said.

In Northpine and neighbouring Bracken-fell many fearful residents reported on sev-eral social media pages that they heard thefour gunshots that night.

Following the incident, Anton Peacockfrom the Northpine Neighbourhood Watchurged residents to be more vigilant.

“Residents must be more aware of theirsurroundings, especially at night whencoming home. This is an unfortunate eventbut should hopefully make us all moreaware and vigilant when driving home. Im-mediately report all suspicious vehiclesparked and men standing around that donot live in your area. This will improve po-licing in our area and ensure that criminalsare not given an opportunity to commitcrimes here,” he said.

An investigation into alleged abuse ofpower by a local traffic officer whowreaked havoc in front of Bastion Pri-

mary in February, was finally launched bythe City’s traffic chief last week.During the incident on 11 February, resi-

dent Christiaan Wessels alleges he was ver-bally abused, harassed and then unjustly fi-ned by a traffic officer from Bellville.On the morning, Wessels drove his chil-

dren to school, as he has for the past four ye-ars. Traffic was especially congested on themorning in question.“I eventually stopped on the left shoulder

as everyone else does and has been doing formany years to off-loadmy children. I handedthem their suitcases and leaned over to kissthem goodbye,” he says.When Wessels tried to get back into the

traffic, he noticed a traffic officer was bloc-king the road in an attempt to pull off moto-rists who were dropping off their children.

Angry mobHundreds of ProteaHeights parents suffer

severe traffic congestion around BastionPrimary during peak hours, a problem exas-perated since the new high school, ProteaHeights Academy, opened its doors this ye-ar.“I can therefore see the need for some en-

forcement, or someone to assist, but thistraffic officer was in factmaking it ten timesworse,” he says.“The two vehicles in front of me that mo-

ved to the left of the road were being told tomove along. They were shaking their headsand explaining to him that they were drop-ping kids and not parking. He wanted not-hing of it and persisted. I was at this stage

trying to get back into the traffic.“At this stage I had been in my vehicle for

±20 minutes trying to get to the front. I thenasked the officer in a polite manner if it wasindeed necessary to block the traffic thewayhe was doing,” says Wessels.In the events that unfolded Wessels says

he was harassed, asked to get out of his carto show his licence, whilst the officer conti-nued to block the road.“I suggested he move along to about 100

metres furtherwherewe could sort thismat-ter out, but he just carried on harassing me.In order to get him out of the way of the bynow angry growing mob behind us, I toldhim that I will bemoving forward to the spotI suggested,” said Wessels.At this point havoc broke out.According to Wessels, the officer “went

ballistic”.“He ranover tohis vehicle,whichwaspar-

ked on the other side of the road, switchedon his sirens, and stopped all traffic in bothdirections in order to get his vehicle in frontof mine, blocking both me and oncomingtraffic, and this in peak hour traffic alreadymoving at a snail’s pace.“At this point he also started shouting at

me and only moved out of the way when herealised that by this time half of the schoolwas standing next to the fence to see whatwas going on,” Wessels recalls.He says the traffic officer continuedbadge-

ring him.“What did I do thatwas sowrong? Imerely

asked him a question. I never shouted or in-sulted him in anyway. Hewas the one doingthe shouting,” he says.The officer then proceeded to write out

two fines, one for not lawfully stopping thevehicle when prompted and one for not wea-ring a seat-belt.“Myvehiclewas not evenmovingwhenhe

started his interrogation and I had just lea-ned over to passmy children’s belongings tothem, so no, I had not put my seat-belt backonyet as Iwas still stationary,” saidWessels.

Dropandgo zoneWessels said he was later informed by the

school’s principal that the area concernedwas a drop-and-go zone where parents canlawfully drop their children off as long asthey don’t park their vehicles.“I am a law abiding citizen and when an

officer of the law treats innocent citizens li-ke this it comes down to nothing but abuseof power,” Wessels added.Eyewitness André Gerber said he was “to-

tally appalled” at the traffic officer’s behavi-our.“His whole demeanour was not of someo-

newho earns the respect of the public – quitethe opposite. He sounded and acted like acowboy who wears a uniform that will showthe rest of the town who is boss … Then pla-ce him into a stressful situation as laid outabove and you have the recipe for disaster.”Wessels lodged a formal complaint with

the City of Cape Town only to be informedby an official that the City ruled the matter“finalised” after deeming the traffic officer’sversion as conflicting.Only after media intervention was the is-

sue escalated to Richard Bosman, the City’sexecutive director for safety and security.Bosman last week said the City takes alle-

gations of this nature very seriously.“Thematter has since been referred tomy

office and to the traffic chief for further in-vestigation,” he said.He urges people who experience negative

The City and one of Bellville’s key law en-forcement arms on Thursday officially setoff a study they hope will keep – and evenexpand – a key business district in the area.The study by the City’s economic deve-

lopment department and the VoortrekkerRoad Corridor City Improvement District(VRCID) will focus on the needs of busines-ses in the Northumberland and Durban Ro-ad business district.“This project is aimed at boosting the lo-

cal economyof theBellville area,” saidGar-reth Bloor, the City’s mayco member ofTourism, Events and Economic Develop-ment.“It has been proven numerous times that

business will stay and expand where thereis a supportive business environment,” hesaid.Theirmainaimwas to enhance the relati-

onship between businesses and the widercommunity, and to encourage economicgrowth, Bloor said.The study’s objectives are to identify is-

sues, concerns andpriorities for businessesoperating in this area and to identify anddevelop a practical plan to deal with these.The ultimate aim is to boost local busi-

Mall syndicatebust wide open

Some of the suspected members of a countrywide armed robbery syndicate who were arrested inHillbrow, Johannesburg.

Police believe they have corralled coremembers of an armed robbery syndi-cate after at least 32 suspects were ar-

rested recently.While themajority of suspects were arre-

sted in Gauteng, as reported by City Press,a number of themwere linked to reconnais-sance and attacks at local malls.The larger group was accosted after poli-

ce recovered and analysed cellphone datafrom syndicate members arrested in CapeTown.The group is linked to at least 34 robbe-

ries, including those of cellphoneand jewel-lery stores, and a number of ATM bom-bings, City Press reported.Some of the armed robberies to have hit

theCape since last year include those at Ca-nal Walk, Tyger Valley, CapeGate, Somer-set Mall, ZevenwachtMall, as well as Long-beach Mall, Bayside Mall and High Con-stantia.

Data trackingIn Kraaifontein, police had reportedly

been hunting two suspects involved in thebombing of an ATM inside the Seven Ele-ven in Northpine on 18 February.Canal Walk and Bayside shopping cen-

tres were targeted by robbers in mid Octo-ber last year, while the Vodacom store inthe Tyger Valley Centre was hit on 3 Octo-ber. ZevenwachtMall inKuils River aswellas the iPicCentre inSoneike,were both tar-geted as far back as April last year.Of these, the most recent was the bom-

bing of an ATM in Bellville, which provedone of the biggest mistakes for at least sixsuspected members of the syndicate.These suspects were involved in a stand-

off with a police General at the ATM bom-bing at the Old Oak Centre on 4March, andwere being tracked by a special police taskforce.The task force was aware of the six ma-

king their way to the Western Cape by bus,City Press reported.Police soon used the data from the sus-

pects’ cellphones and surmised the grouphad been scouting centres in Brackenfell

and Tyger Valley – both of which were hitlate last year.The suspects are believed to have bom-

bed the ATM after they ran out of money.Twowerewounded and arrested on the sce-ne, and the rest at the nearby taxi rank.Their recovered cellphones were used to

link them to robberies at Sea Point, Mal-mesbury, CanalWalk,Gardens andStellen-bosch.The six suspects were also believed to ha-

ve been involved in the bombing of aTatter-salls safe in Durban Road on 3 March.Provincial police spokesperson Captain

Frederick vanWyk said investigations we-re at an advanced stage.

Behind barsAccording to the Institute for Security

Studies, there has been a 143% increase inarmed robberies at shopping centres overthe past year.But national police spokesperson Lieute-

nant General Solomon Makgale told CityPress most of the suspects responsible forthe robberies in Gauteng and the WesternCape were now behind bars.“There are, however, still a few of their

associates – alongwith the dealers towhomthe cellphones are sold – at large. We arenow focusing on them.”Policewere said to be using the cellphone

data and video footage from centres to iden-tify individuals.“All the information is consolidated to

compile profiles of the ringleaders, as wellas their modus operandi,” Makgale was re-ported as saying.This allowed the creation of a police data-

base that could be cross-referenced acrossthe provinces.“It gives us an intelligence picture that

allows us... to thwart the plans of robbers,particularly at shopping centres,”Makgalewas reported as saying.“It is also clear the syndicates are multi-

dimensional in that they not only carry outdifferent types of robberies, but also hijackvehicles, rob ATMs and commit other vio-lent crimes.”Most of the suspects arrested in Gauteng

were of Zimbabweannationality,City Pressreported.

Nothing but the truth at Artscape willprovide local Grade 12 learnerswith an

educational boost.The play is an Artscape production in as-

sociation with the Siyasanga Cape TownTheatre Company and will be performed atArtscape from 6 to 13 May.Supported by theWestern Cape education

department and the HCI Foundation, Not-hingbut theTruth formspart of theArtscapeeducational youth development programmethat aims to promote social cohesion, goodcitizenship and empowerment through thearts. The 2015 programme intends to fostermulti-cultural consciousness while honou-ring the legacy of Mandela.

The production is written by South Afri-ca’s theatre icon John Kani whose work hasbeenwidely performed around theworld, in-cluding New York, where he and WinstonNtshonawon aTonyAward in 1975 forSizweBanzi Is Dead and The Island. leader in the field of biological control andguides the City on rearing and releasinginsects to control selected invasive plants.Last year, the City’s biological control

team was trained by university experts.“Biological control is increasingly be-

coming a cost-effectivemethod of control inthe war against infestations of invasiveplants,” he adds.The City’s Invasive Species Unit plans to

increase the awareness of the applicationof biological control.“The aim is to show learners how biocon-

trol insects are reared for release, therebycreating awareness about this exciting partof invasive plant management.The school outreach programmes will

Competence SA hosted its first autumn “Pop-Up Coffee Shop Talk” in Durbanville lastweek.

This was the first of a series of free pop-upevents around Cape Town. The topic for dis-cussion was “How to handle difficult conver-sations”.

This insightful talk was facilitated by RenéGrobler of Competence SA, a consultinggroup in people management, and gave theattendees an opportunity to connect, not onlywith others, but also with themselves.

The intention of this event is to bring topi-cal issues to the table for those who are inter-ested in psychology and people management.This is an informal opportunity to network,share personal experiences and reflect.

Hy was slegs negentien toe sy belangstel-ling in posseëls geprikkel is, maar op 69-ja-rige ouderdom wil ’n man van Ruyter-wacht sy hele versameling van 62 000 seëlsverkoop.

Adrian Burke (skuilnaam) het tien jaargelede afgetree en het geleidelik sy seëlbe-drywighede begin afskaal. Nou wil hy ver-kieslik alles op een slag verkoop, sodat hy“meer spasie” in sy huis kan hê.

“My tannie het al die jare seëls versamel,maar die gogga het my gebyt toe ek een dagin die bank ’n klomp koeverte gesien het.

“Ek het besluit die seëls daarop word netvermors en het begin om dit te versamel.Toe my tannie sterf, het sy ook haar heleversameling aan my nagelaat,” sê Burke,wat nie sy regte naam wil gee nie omdat hyalleen woon.

Oor die jare het hy seëls hier en daar gebe-del en soms ’n paar gekoop, maar nie vir teveel nie. “Ek het begin oplees oor seëls enso my kennis opgedoen. Vandag het ek seëlsvan 171 posunies oor die wêreld heen. Daaris seëls van klein lande soos Samoa en gro-tes soos Amerika en Brittanje,” sê Burke.

Hy sê vir ander mense kan die versame-ling van seëls bra vervelig lyk, maar virhom was dit leersaam. “Wanneer jy opleesoor ’n seël, leer jy nie net die geskiedenis

daarvan ken nie, maar ook die geskiedenisvan die spesifieke plek. Dit verbreed ’n men-se se kennis oor die wêreld daarbuite en eksal jongmense aanmoedig om dit as stok-perdjie te volg,” sê Burke.

Alan Rogers from the Royal Philatelic So-ciety of Cape Town sê dit is moeilik om diewaarde van Burke se versameling te bepaalvoor hulle nie self daarna gekyk het nie.

“Die waarde van seëls hang van verskeieaspekte af. Sommige jare se seëls het baiekeer meer waarde as ander jare s’n. Skaars-heid speel ook ’n groot rol,” sê hy.

Durbanville’s own Miss Winelands Petite2015 has been chosen as one of 50 semi-final-ists in the Miss Teen Commonwealth SouthAfrica competition.

Megan Coetzee (18) from SummerwoodEstate in Pinehurst has taken a gap yearto fulfil her dream of taking part in the pag-eant.

Her dream was fuelled when she was cho-sen as one of the top five in the Miss Durbiecompetition in her 2014 matric year at Dur-banville High School. She was also award-ed the title Miss Photogenic.

This led her to enter the Miss WinelandsPetite 2015, and on 28 February she wascrowned the winner.

Megan took part in the first round of thesemi-finals in Johannesburg this pastweekend and will fly back to Johannesburgon 2 May for the second round of semi-fi-nals, after which the 20 finalists will be cho-sen.

The grand final is scheduled to take placeon 12 September.

The winner will depart for London on 9November to take part in the Miss TeenCommonwealth International competi-tion.

“I always wanted to work with charityand that is why I decided to take a gap yearto get involved with charity work, workwith people and develop myself through ex-perience,” she explained.

She has already decided on the SunfieldHome in Wellington for intellectual disa-bled adults as her focus project.

Megan has visited the home with its 80residents and daycare visitors. She handedout lucky packets and did face painting ina combined effort with the charity projectBietjie Liefde.

“I really do believe in hard work and livewith a simple motto of ‘Believe in yourselfand have a little blind faith’.”

As a Miss Teen Commonwealth SA semi-finalist she needs to raise R1000 cash spon-sorships each month. This money is used tocover Commonwealth Pageants SA’s pro-duction and administrative costs, her chari-ty projects and to assist the winners to trav-el and compete in London in November.

The wicket taking leg spinner is a heada-che for batsmen as he continues takingscalps.

To take figures of 3/12 in five overs in yourfirst game against Krugersdorp is nothingshort of a dream start.

Earlier this month he received a sportsaward for taking four wickets in a match. Hedid this in nine matches during the courseof the season.

It comes as no surprise he also scooped theaward for the best senior bowler, taking 36wickets in 18 matches, keeping the batsmendown to a run rate of 2.9 runs per over.

Thus far he has taken more than 128 wic-kets for Fairmont.

Last year he showed he is destined for hig-her honours in the future as he took 18 wic-kets in five matches for the District Northunder-15 side.

As far as Western Province trials go, hemust surely impress the selectors with 11wickets in three matches at a run rate of 3.7runs per over.

Liam is clear on his goals: “I want to playfor the Cobras when I’m 18 and go and playin the IPL in India. I really enjoy my cricket,and it is always nice to take wickets.”
