Mouldy and rotten food meant for pigs is being sold in your communities. The story starts at the Clover dairy factory in Bellville who entrusted a recycling com- pany to remove its waste products. But instead of carting the waste away to designated pig farms as per their contract with Clover, it is believed the recycler takes the products, “spruces them up a bit”, and sells them to these communities. “I would like to stay anonymous for my own safety,” the whistle-blower requested of TygerBurger. The source claims the recycler and his gang scrape mould off rotten cheese and re- package “old” milk, custard and yoghurt in bottles. They also use paint thinners to remove the sell-by and manufacturing dates from some of the other items they resell. The items are then sold to smaller retail- ers and end up all over the Cape Flats, in- cluding Bonteheuwel, Belhar, Delft, Atlantis and Mandalay, according to the source. Products from elsewhere, including “slimy viennas”, russian sausages and even bacon, are simply washed and sold. Rotten items “People need to be made aware that they’re buying pigs’ food. The stuff is sold at very low cost. A block of cheese which would retail for R60 in a store, is sold for as little as R20 to R40.” The source says pallets with the rotten items in large blue drums were removed from the Clover premises in the evenings. The standard practice would require the re- cycler to simply cart the drums away to the farms. But in a sly twist, they disguise the solid dairy items under the liquids and make off with these illegally. “Old feta cheese or milk is thrown atop the other products so the security guards who check the drums cannot see what’s on the bottom,” the source says. “Bags are added to the drums so the secu- rity doesn’t damage the goods if he pokes a stick into the drum.” Contract reinstated From there the drums are transported to Atlantis or Mandalay, where the contractor has waiting buyers, the source says. “The rest of the men then take their drums to their own buyers where the contents are sold via trolleys or at railway stations.” Email correspondence provided by the source shows that Clover was alerted in Jan- uary. The correspondence shows Clover subse- quently summarily ended the contract at the end of February. However, the source said the contract was reinstated in May. “I am unsure whether Clover is aware that the men have since started working again.” A blue drum and its contents are sold at R1000, the source says. “Clover takes the disposal of waste productsvery seriously and has strict guidelinesaround the disposal of food stuff and recy-cling of packaging. These processes are re-gularly audited,” he says.

“In terms of the processes, waste productsare decanted prior to disposal and the origi-nal packaging is recycled.

“At our Cape Town branch, Clover has anarrangement with a local pig farmer interms of which only decanted liquid waste(that is, milk) may be collected in bulk con-tainers for stock feeding purposes,” he says.

“Further to your enquiry we have investi-gated the claims and have verified that thisprocess has been adhered to. Any evidenceto the contrary will be investigated and ac-ted on appropriately.”

The City’s mayco member for health, Siy-abulela Mamkeli, said his office’s Tyger-berg sub-district had not received any com-plaints about the disposal or resale of wastefrom Clover.

“I would encourage any member of the pu-blic to come forward and provide informati-on should they have any concerns of this na-ture,” Mamkeli said.

He adds the City can take immediate acti-on where it is found food safety has beencompromised in terms of food legislation.

“No person is allowed to sell foodstuffs

that are contaminated or impure. The legis-lation makes provision for legal action to betaken where evidence exists,” he says.

Mamkeli explains that “waste” refers notonly to products that have reached theirsell-by dates and that mostly retailers’ foodwaste ended up at landfill sites.

“Some food waste does, however, go outwith the normal waste removal. It remainsa good practice to look at the date of durabi-lity on products and, if consumers see that

it is beyond the date, advise the retailer.”Mamkeli adds that stock rotation is also

important, as was buying from a reputableretailer. He advises to “avoid fly-by-nightretailers”.

“If foodstuffs are offered at unbelievablylow prices, be extra cautious. If containersare leaking or dirty, if labels are faded, orif it appears that the date marking has beentampered with, report this to the nearestEnvironmental Health Office,” Mamkeli ad-vised.

Political party representatives are target-ing the elderly to join their parties – withthreats.

The office of the regional land claims com-missioner says it has recently received com-plaints from prospective claimants that po-litical party officials are telling people ifthey join a particular political party theywill get their land claims settled.

Making the elderly join political partiesto have their claims settled is said to be

prevalent in Nyanga, Langa, Elsies River,Khayelitsha, Atlantis and Salt River.

Most of the complaints came to the officein Mowbray.

There are also complaints that scamstersare posing as officials of the commissionerand charging people R50 to attend a meet-ing.

It is alleged these officials ask the victimsfor their documentation, which they prom-ise to take to the office for the claimants.

Michael Worsnip, chief director for landrestitution support in the Western Cape, says this is not the way they work and theclaimants are being seriously disadvan-taged.

“I want to emphasise the commission isnot answerable to political parties. Our mes-sage to all claimants is that you do not needto belong to any specific political party, andpeople can lodge a claim even if they do notbelong to any political party,” he says.

Belhar police have been hard at work withOperation Fiela, a multi-disciplinary andinter-departmental government operationthat was launched earlier this year to crackdown on crime.

Belhar acting station commander Cap-tain Herman de Jager said four people werearrested during raids in Chestnut Place onThursday.

“This operation saw authorities confis-cate tik, mandrax powder, a replica fire-arm and a stolen cellphone,” said de Jager.

“This operation focused on ChestnutPlace where departments gathered beforeproceeding to search gang outlets.”

De Jager also said there had been a dras-tic increase in street robberies along Stel-lenbosch Arterial.

Upgrade for settlementAn upgrade is in the pipeline for an in-

formal settlement in Ravensmead.Construction on the City’s Ravens-

mead Park is now in the planning and de-sign phase and will ultimately see residentsreceiving improved structures that arewarmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Formerly known as Wendy Park or SweetLips, this small informal settlement is locat-ed off Florida Road, between 14th and 16thStreets, in Ravensmead.

It is envisaged that 51 units will be con-structed in Ravensmead Park which will ac-commodate the beneficiaries residing in theinformal settlement as well as those resid-

ing in theneighbouringAppelboord inform-al settlement.

The residents will be relocated in fourphases, as per the sequence of completionof the phases.

“Weare changing the lives of these benefi-ciaries for the better,” said the City’s May-oral Committee Member for Human Settle-ments, Benedicta van Minnen.

“When the development is completed, they will have 1:1 services, space to expandtheir homes, and there will be communityfacilities and safe spaces for children toplay. I urge the community to work with usso that we can ensure that progress is made

possible.”The units will be made from a galvanised

cold-rolled lightweight steel-framed struc-ture clad with colour-bonded sheeting ofsimilar material.

Each will have a concrete raft foundationwith floor space of 26 m² in size, includinga sealed off toilet and washing cubicle.

All inside walls and ceilings of units willbe clad with ‘bubble foil’ insulation compli-ant with the SANS 428 Fire Regulations.

Further insulation through the applica-tion of ceramic-based thermal insulatingpaint on the roof structure will be suppliedto all dwellings.

This informal settlement in Ravensmead is due to be upgraded, ensuring proper housing for residents.

FOTO: PETER ABRAHAMS

MICHELLE LINNERT@linnertmb

“Ek werk met kinders – welsynkinders, weggooikinders, mishandeldes,” praat symaklik oor haar ambassadeurskap by diewelsynsorganisasie Heavenly Haven inDelft.

“Hier is daar ’n groot nood.

Learners at Elsbury Primary in Ma-troosfontein are making news to be inthe news.

The school, turning 67 this year, just cele-brated the first edition of its first schoolnewspaperandhasplans to growbyproduc-ing an edition every quarter.Dillan Davids, an intern from the West-

ern Cape education department at theschool, who is also a former pupil, startedthe project when he was approached by agroup of learners who became the newsteam. He is part of the Youth PAY Project 2015

which undertakes teacher assistance, ad-ministration, health and nutrition, re-source management, as well as manage ex-tra-mural activities.“I was surprised but very happy that this

initiative came from them,” he said.“They wanted me to assist them because

they wanted to have a way of expressingthemselves and provide information to theschool, community and their parents.“This is how the Elsbury Extra came into

being and our first edition became a hit in

the local community. So much so that wehad to print more copies.”Since starting there has been positive

support from the staff at the school who feelthat such a project promotes literacy. They have now been assigned a special

room as their newsroom where they meetand plan future projects.“There’s no stopping these learners

now,” says Davids.“We’ve held a workshop to discuss how

we are going to grow and are working ondigitising the newspaper to get a wider au-dience across social media.“The school’s first website [www.elsbur-

yps.wix.com/elsbury-primary] has alsobeen created as a way to share the news ofthe school to a wider audience as well asformer learners.”While the learners are enjoying the fun

side of gathering news, the news team re-gards the effectiveness of the newspaper asa top priority because of the poor literacyamong South Africans.“Some of our learners who are part of the

newspaper started at the school with noability to read or write, but working on thepaper motivated them to improve their lit-eracy skills,” said Davids.

Childhood dreams should never die. That is the motto of Abegail Swartz

from Bonteheuwel who has justpassed her first Trinity exam in piano andmade her childhood dream come true.Tygerburger played a small part in her

triumph because it was a story about Ro-nald Wessels’ music classes in Bonteheuw-el that led her to take the first step.

Wessels is very proud of his student.“Abegail is an inspiration in our commu-

nity for those who lose sight of theirdreams,” he said.

“She’s a single working mother and start-ed her journey into music about threeyears ago. Shemade the time tobe here afterwork and I wasstruck by herenthusiasm andpassion for mu-sic.

“She was a bitscared of the ex-ams initially butI persuaded herto take the Trini-ty College Lon-don exam andthe resultsboosted her con-fidence tremen-dously.”

The harmonies flow through the modesthome in Apricot Street as Abegail explainshow much this achievement means to her.

“I want people to know that it is nevertoo late to find your dreams. Playing the pi-ano has been mine since I was a child butthere was never the chance, the money, todo it.”V For more information about the music lessonsthat are held at John Ramsey High in Bishop Laviscontact Ronald Wessels on 078 940 6829.

Bullying is getting the boot in Bonte-heuwel as schools celebrated thefourth annual National Bullying

Awareness Day.On Friday 31 July some roaring Harley

Davidsons were heard on the streets of thearea as they marched from school to schoolto take their message to the community.

Established by the JAG Foundation’sJAGBullyProof programme, the eventlinked 13 schools (12 Primary and a HighSchool)with the commongoal of standingupagainst bullying.

Each school was given a personal valuesuch as Respect, Integrity, Leadership etc.and were requested to prepare a positive

message about how their specific valueplays a role in creating a bully-free schoolsaid Alex Corrin from the JAG Foundation.

“Two learners from each school, togetherwith their message, joined the JAGBully-Proof team for a Superhero inspired mis-sion,” he said.

“In the week leading up to National Bully-ing Awareness Day, JAGBullyProof’s Su-perhero mascot had unfortunately had hisarmourbrokenbybullies andwas in 13 sepa-rate pieces.

“Each piece of armour represents a specif-ic personal value which JAGBullyProof’sSuperhero uses to protect himself from thenastiness of bullying.

“Each piece was found by a differentschool and all needed to come together to re-store his values and empower him once

again to be BullyProof.”Corrin explained that they started out

from Central Park Primary school when all26 learners, together with various JAGBul-lyProof ambassadors such as Prime Circledrummer Dale Schnettler, and an entourageof Harley Davidson’s, set off on a Superheroinspiredwalk through the community to en-courage others to stand up against bullying.

“The school then played host to the proc-ess of restoring JAGBullyProof’s Superhe-ro’s armour.

“Each learner pair came up in turn, quot-ed their personal value and fitted the pieceof armour into his body. After all 13 pieceshad been reunited, the mission of restoringhis values had been achieve and was onceagain BullyProofed.”

Corrin added that theywould like to thank

all their partners for the day that includedWilliams Hunt Cape Town, who supplied, inaddition to the already BullyProofed ChevyBakkie, four vehicles to ensure the childrenfrom the schools completed their mission ofreuniting ourSuperhero’s armour in the saf-est way possible.

“There’s also a special thanks to CapeTown Harley Davidson chapter which pro-vided a safety entourage for our walk.We al-so had great support from the Western CapeEducation department, as well as the Bonte-heuwel Metro Police.”

The JAGBullyProof programme is availa-ble to schools and institutions, in manualform, free of charge to run and implementas a school initiative.V For more information go to www.jagfoundation.org.za.

Soccer unites generations“S squad” wascrowned this year’s“kings of UWC”soccer champions. They walked awaywith R5000 fortheir efforts onSunday.PHOTOS: ANGELOKALMEYER

EARL HAUPT

The sun was out, fun was had and at theend of the day, a group of eight menwalked awaywith awinner’s cheque of

R5000.In what started as an innocent kick-about

between fellow students on the “dell”, out-side the University of the Western Cape’s(UWC) cafeteria in 2004, it has now flour-ished into a much anticipated “kings ofUWC” event. The annual event pits students, alumni

and all those associated with the universityin a 5-a-side soccer tournament. The daywas not only to share skills on the

pitch, but to also share stories of years goneby, reinforcing the bonds which were firstforged as students. And while there was an element of fun at-

tached to the event, the competition was redhot as 16 teams battled it out.In the end, “S squad” rose to the challenge,

beating all comers to the title.ChadHare, captain, could not hide his ela-

tion.“I can’t explain how I feel, we are just hap-

py that we did this together. “We have beenfriends for as long as we have been here, forsix or seven years. We all know each otherthrough soccer, so it’s a brotherhood. We area family.”The team’s Fabian “Takka” Wareley took

home the Lyle Arendse player of the tourna-ment award, named in honour of one of thetournament’s founding members.Hilton Stroud, one of the tournament’s or-

ganisers, said he has seen the event growfrom strength to strength whilst holding on-to the spirit which it is synonymous for.“It is also a timewhere guys from old, who

haven’t seen each other since their time atcampus, came in and met each other, braa-ied and socialised.“Even though they didn’t win the game,

they really enjoyed the fact that they had theopportunity to catch up with each other asthey come from all around the province. Soreally it has been a success on both the soc-cer side as well as the social side.”Prof Tyrone Pretorius, UWC rector, en-

joyed the Sunday spectacle, while also real-ising the importance the event plays in thelife of the university.“It’s clearly been a fun day and the weath-

er played along and from what I can see ev-eryone had fun. But more than the fun, it’sstudent, it’s staff, it’s also our alumni and it’sgreat to see their passion for the university.“It’s good for the university. It’s good for

the university’s reputation and it says a lotthat people want to be associated with theuniversity in this way.”Pretorius, without knowing the specifics

of the event’s origins, praised the enterprise

shown by the founders of the tournament, who were chased off the original field at the“dell” 11 years ago.“It’s fantastic that what started out as a

student initiative has been embraced by theälumni and has become a regular feature onthe calendar of UWC.“That’s the kind of graduates thatwewant

to produce: Graduates that take the initia-tive, that are creative and take responsibili-ty for their own development,” he conclud-ed. Fagan Muller, Santos captain and one ofthe founders of the tournament, reminiscedabout the days where students put in theirown share in the hope of taking home thespoils for a gatsby and their drink of choiceat the Barn, but also pointed out the role thetournament has played in his own career.“I think that if it wasn’t for this, then

UWC’s soccer team wouldn’t be so strong. It

was playing in this (tournament) that I de-cided to play for the UWC soccer team, whichwasprosperous in the end, playing forthe universities national team.“This started it all. In the dell, where

friends get together.“That’s why we make sure that we have

usplayinghere, theGreenDragons.Becausewe are the only team that is left of the teamsthat started this. A bunch of boys whothought class was overrated,” quippedMull-er.“It was never the intention to make it this

big. It was never the intention tomake it oneof the events on the calendar, but the cama-raderie between all the different teams fromthe res, outside, inside and guys from allover, everyone wants to be part of UWC andeveryone feels like part of the alumni on theday.”

Tapelo Sixishe of Home Boys (left) takes on all comers in their final against eventualtournament winners ‘S’ squad.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Wesley Krotz is without doubt one of thevery best ice hockey players in the country, proven by the fact the Canadian ParrySound Islanders team has acquired his ser-vices.

Bearing in mind, the 19-year-old from Mil-nerton was already selected to representSouth Africa on a senior level when he was15.

“Between the age of 10 and 13, I used toskate with my cousin at every public ses-sion because we enjoyed ice skating somuch. One holiday in Johannesburg, wewere skating at Northgate Ice rink and themanager approached us and asked if wewould like to play ice hockey for them.

“On our return to Cape Town, my mothermade enquiries about ice hockey and we im-mediately signed up for the Learn to PlayAcademy that took place on Sunday morn-ings.

“I then joined the Penguins Club after at-tending the academy and the next monthwas selected to represent Western Provinceu.14s. That was the beginning and I neverlooked back,” says Wesley.

This young man’s accolades are astonish-ing. Representing his country in Mexico atan international tournament in 2011 he wasvoted the best u.18 player of the tournament. He received this honour again in Turkey in2013, thus making him possibly the only na-tional ice hockey player to receive the bestplayer of the tournament award as both ajunior and senior.

“I have been fortunate to play in Mexico,Turkey, Bulgaria, Spain and New Zealand. You learn a lot by travelling overseas andseeing how other countries play.

“The sport is also much bigger overseasand played professionally. For examplethey train six days a week for up to fivehours a day.

“That is one of the reasons why I am so

excited to join the team in Canada. I wantto play well and work hard and become thebest player I can possibly be.

“It is my dream to become a professionalplayer and one day become a coach and helpgrow the sport in our country.

“The Canadian season starts on 6 Septem-ber and I will be flying out, God willing, on4 or 5 September to start this exciting jour-ney in my hockey career.

Parry Sound Islanders is a club that at-tracts scouts from all the pro teams, andWesley hopes this will give him the opportu-nity to get to the next level.

“I would like to thank Victor Kester, mymentor and supporter in Canada, for believ-ing in me and investing in my dream, andobviously my mother Kathy who is alwaysthere for me and helping me raise funds inorder for me to go to Canada,” said Wesley.V To make any financial donation to help Wesley getto Canada go to: http://www.gofundme.com/x7j3c9h
