    standighede by die Brackenfell-stasie,

    Brackenfell, is verlede Dinsdagaand oorlede

    n n hartaanval.

Le Roux was oor die jare heen aktief be-

    aanskryf.

Die stasie lyk soos n bankrotspul. n

Vark sal sies s! Dis morsig. Op die geboue

is obsene graffiti en bendetekens waaraan

ons kinders en ander voetgangers elke dag

    blootgestel is.

Ek sien Transnet is verhewe bo verorde-

ninge terwyl ons as inwoners sagte teikens

    is, skryf hy.

    sydood in n onderhoudaanTygerBurger ge-

    s.

AanWilliamdabsweg se kant is drade nie

    LeRouxwasveral bekommerdoordie goe-

    dereloodswat al jare leegstaanensedert 2011

n slaapplek geword het vir haweloses, on-

    voeg.

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

    P

    Brackenfell gehad: Dat alles veilig

    tigheid.

Pieter is verlede Dinsdagaand op die ou-

derdom van 69 by sy huis in Proteahoogte

    oorlede n n hartaanval.

    liefde woonbuurt onverskrokke patrolleer

    het.

En di wat hom ken, sal weet dat hy vir

niks en niemand teruggestaan het nie. Selfs

    as afgetredenehet hyhomdaarop toegespits

As n jong man was hy vir twee jaar n

huursoldaat in die Kongo, waarna hy vir

    twee jaar by die Suid-AfrikaaanseWeermag

    se spesiale magte aangesluit het.

    As n bekwame eiendomswaardeerder en

dorpsbeplanner het hy homself in die jare

tagtig in Brackenfell kom vestig, waarna hy

aktief betrokke was by plaaslike politiek.

Tydens die oorgangsjare het hy die plaas-

    like townships verteenwoordig op dieKaap-

se Metropolitaanse Oorgangsraad en het hy

    ook op verskeie polisieforums gedien.

Ekhet hom leer kenmet die eerste demo-

kratiese verkiesings toe ons albei as raads-

lede vir Oostenberg gestaan het, vertelMa-

    rian Nieuwoudt, wyksraadslid.

Volgens haar het hy tydens hul tydperk

    as raadslede van Oostenberg waardevolle

bydraes gelewer ten opsigte van die beleid

en beplanning van infrastruktuur vir die

    Kraaifontein-, Wallacedene- en Bloekom-

    bos-gebiede.

Sy kennis van behuising en die eien-

    domsmark is ook welbekend.

As waardeerder was hy oor die hele land

    baie betrokke by munisipale waardasies,

    s sy.

Ek sal Pieter veral onthou as n persoon

    ke in huurverband.

    veiligheid was sy nommer 1-prioriteit.

Oom Pieter was daarom nie baie gewild

by die polisie of owerhede nie, want hy sou

Volgens Le Roux was Pieter in sy hoeda-

    nigheidas n landsburger aktief betrokkeby

    verskeie plaaslike projekte.

Dis sluit in die herontwikkeling van die

    historiese Everite-hostelle, waar verskeie

    gestaanmet nmagdom inligting oor watter

Hy

word vandag (Woensdag) om 11:00 vanuit

    die NG Kerk Proteahoogte begrawe.

Ook die voetoorgangbrug hou gevare in

    vir gebruikers.

    Ditword gebruik vir handelaarsom

daarop te slaap en dien as toilet enmoet

    deur Gesondheid skoongemaak word

    teen belastingbetalers se rekening, s

    hy.

    Voetgangers en kinderswat die brug

gebruik, word aangeval en beroof en

jong skoolmeisies word betas en walgli-

ke voorstelle word aan hulle gemaak

    terwyl daar geen beskermingsdienste is

nie. Groot, oop vure word gemaak en

vuil wasgoed hang oral oor die bome.

    TygerBurger rapporteer sedert 2011

oor die rooftogte en aanvalle wat ge-

    reeld hier plaasvind.

    LeRouxvoegbydat die perseel so vuil

enmorsig is dat die departement van ge-

sondheid al rottegif moes uitsit om te

verhoed dat die rottepes na die omlig-

    gende ondernemings en huise versprei.

Volgens hom weier die polisie om

    dwelmhandelaars, bendelede of prosti-

    gegee.

    Transnet-eiendom is.

    probleem rondomdie rommel by Trans-

net geopper. Dit is hulle verantwoorde-

    likheid.

    Volgens Reddy kon wetstoepassers

    n Betroubare TygerBurger-bron be-

    skoonmaakoperasies gereeld plaas-

    vind.

    maak.

Daar was vanoggend nog sakke rom-

mel oral op die stasie. Dis baie vuil

daar, het hy Maandag aan TygerBur-

    ger ges.

    Teen Maandagmiddag het TygerBur-

ger die stasie in n bemorste toestand ge-

vind, en teen druktyd kon die Stad

Kaapstad nog nie bevestig of die boge-

noemde aksie teen 7 Junie teen Trans-

    net geneem was nie.

In sy laaste sinne aan die owerhede,

s Le Roux dat die Brackenfell-gemeen-

skap tot protesaksie sal oorgaan tensy

    dinge nie spoedig verbeter nie.

    Ons stempotloodjies is besig om

    CLEARANCE CENTRE

Jip de Jager Drive in Bellville is due to be

resurfaced, and with the project commenc-

ing next week, motorists should expect some

delays due to the closure of lanes.

The resurfacing, set to cost approximately

R4 million, should be completed by Tuesday

5 July if all goes as planned.

Roads have a limited lifespan. Given the

huge investment that is required for building

    new infrastructure, we undertake regular

maintenance to prolong the longevity of the

citys road network. As such, the roadworks

along Jip de Jager Drive involve the mainte-

nance of the existing road base, resurfacing,

and ancillary works to prevent further dete-

rioration and potholes, says the Citys May-

co member for transport, Brett Herron.

Some lanes in Jip de Jager Drive will be

closed to traffic for the duration of the road-

works. However, one lane in each direction

will remain open at all times.

The closure of the lanes will enable us to

expedite the roadworks so that motorists are

inconvenienced for a shorter time. Even

though the progress depends as much on the

weather as on other unforeseen circumstan-

ces, we are confident that the works will be

    completedwithin threeweeks, saysHerron.

We request road users to pleasemake pro-

vision for longer travelling times during the

next threeweeks and to be patient.Once com-

pleted, we will all benefit from the new

smoother road surface and improved driving

    conditions, says Herron.

Information Centre for more information on

ie wreld is een enorme soetpatat ry-

ker nadat die 8-jarige Andr Pieters

    van die Laerskool Parow-Wes n

monster van 11,59 kg gekweek het.

As nmens dit in lewende lywe bestudeer,

waardige patatte. Verskeie koerante in En-

gelandhet juis in 2008 ngroot ophef gemaak

    van n Lebanese man wat n 11,3 kg-soetpa-

    tat gekweek het.

Ek plant dit en my pa grawe dit uit, s

    Andr trots.

ford geplant, waar Andr sr. dit so ampers

    kords sou slaan.

Kyk

hierdie massiewe ding!, het hy ges, lag

    Andr.

t seems that very little or no special pro-

visions are in place to assist deaf people

    whenwriting their driving learners test

at the Brackenfell Driving Licence Testing

    Centre (DLTC).

This is the opinion of a frustrated Brack-

enfell father whose deaf son has failed this

    test twice in three months.

The City of Cape Town denies this allega-

tion, saying that special provisions are

available for deaf people taking the test.

The learner in question visited the centre

in January and March and twice the same

    thing happened.

The traffic officer did not understand

my deaf son andmy deaf son did not under-

stand him as he was speaking too fast for

my son to read his lips. My son tried to ask

him to speak slower but the officer seemed

to ignore him and continued speaking very

fast. He seemed very impatient, says the

father, who wishes to remain anonymous.

After realising that it was futile to try

and communicate, my son just kept quiet

and decided to take the test, not being sure

of many administrative aspects. When he

forgot to circle his answers the officer did

not seem very helpful and again very impa-

tiently took the test paper from him and

    told him he had failed.

The question on the lips of this father is

    simple yet reasonable.

Why cant more patience and care be

shown to deaf people who take this test?

Mayco member for safety and security,

JP Smith, says this is the first time that a

complaint like this had been received.

This is not the first time that the centre

has dealt with applicants who have a hear-

ing disability (deaf applicants). In the case

of a deaf applicant and where the applicant

has informed the examiner of their disabili-

ty, the applicant will be given the option to

complete the test in a one-on-one environ-

    ment.

If the applicant decides to write the test

in a group, the examiner will then ensure

that the applicant takes up a seat at the

front of the class, he explains.

The examiner will stand in front of the

applicant while presenting the class to en-

sure that the applicant understands the in-

structions given. The applicant will also be

given a chance to ask questions of clarity

should they fail to understand the instruc-

tions given by the examiner. If the appli-

cant decides towrite the test in aone-on-one

    environment, then the management repre-

sentative will submit such an application

to the department of transport, says

    Smith.

    According to Smith, an investigationwas

conducted to shed more light on the above

    matter.

    Enquiriesweremadewith the examiner

who conducted the test on the day in ques-

tion and he could recall the incident and re-

    membered the applicant, says Smith.

According to the examiner, it was only

after he presented the class to the appli-

cants that this specific applicant informed

    him of his hearing problem.

He then asked the applicant whether he

would be able to continue with the test, or

    whether alternative arrangements should

    be made.

    The applicant informed the examiner

that he would be able to understand

    through lip-reading.

The examiner then decided to repeat the

presentation and took up a position right

in front of the applicant to give him the best

opportunity to understand. After the pre-

sentation the examiner asked the applicant

whether he understood his explanation, to

which he responded positively by showing

    his thumb.

n Skenking van meer as R3,4 miljoen se

boeke gaan laerskole in die Wes-Kaap be-

    hoorlik aan die lees sit!

Op Maandag 13 Junie het NB-uitgewers

di groot geskenk aan die Suid-Afrikaanse

    Onderwys-ontwikkelingstrust (Saoot) by

On the Dot se kantore in Sacks-sirkel in

    Bellville oorhandig vir n biblioteekprojek

    vir laerskole in die Wes-Kaap.

Ek voel nou soos Kersvader in die mid-

del van die jaar. Einde verlede jaar is die

projek afgeskop by die primre skole

Scottsville in Kraaifontein, Tygersig in Ra-

    HSRC Press sal hoofsaaklik naslaanwer-

ke en handleidings vir onderwysers skenk,

    terwyl Lapa-uitgewers leesboeke wil voor-

    sien vir laer- en horskole.

Die meeste leerders in die voorheen be-

nadeelde gemeenskappe het nie die luukse

van n biblioteek in hul woongebied of by

hul skole nie.Met die skenkings kan ons die

skole vra om n klaskamer of n le vertrek

    te omskep in n biblioteek.

By skole waar daarwel le boekrakke is,

    keur kry.

Hy het ook bygevoeg dat Nedine Blom,

ambassadeur van die wiskunde- en biblio-

    teekprojek, tydens oorhandigings by skole

    Unemployed equipped for life

    T

    he Fisantekraal Centre for Develop-

ment (FCD) near the Durbanville taxi

rank is not only about economic em-

powerment, but also about equipping unem-

ployed people for a meaningful life.

Jane Gelderman, director of FCD, elabo-

rates: We equip our students with the nec-

essary skills that will help them to become

economically active, as well as developing

    emotional, social and spiritual skills.

The centre has been running courses to

support and guide the unemployed and

semi-employed for a number of years now.

The aim of the courses is to restore digni-

ty and improve self-esteem and self-confi-

dence to those who have lost hope in ever

    finding employment, says Gelderman.

All students have to complete the job read-

iness course before they can move on to any

of the other courses. This course prepares

learners for the world of work by teaching

life skills, basic computer skills and a cus-

    tomer service orientation.

As a Christian based non-profitable orga-

nisation, the students are also encouraged to

    participate in spiritual development ses-

sions run by local pastors from five Durban-

    ville churches.

    Imelda Cleaphas, who recently completed

the course, says the sessions on life skills

and spiritual development taught me I am

    a work in progress.

I realised that I need to be more thought-

ful when I deal with people, but that I am

quite good at resolving conflict, she says.

    Another student, Ziyanda Kwinana, says:

When I started the course I was shy and un-

sure of myself, but now I have more confi-

dence and know how to communicate with

    people.

Once students have completed the job

readiness course, they have the option to go

on retail training programmes at a variety

    of businesses.

They can also move on to

the frail care or office basics

    programmes, Gelderman ex-

    plains. Upon successful com-

    pletion of these work-ready

    courses, FCD offers support

    in placing their students,

    where possible.

    Entrepreneurial courses

    are very important, Gelder-

    man says.

    There are many unem-

    ployed people out there who

    are running small business-

    es from home. Our courses

will help them to grow their

    businesses and to make sure

that they run as profitably as

    possible, she says.

    Our bake-for-profit

    course is very popular, she

    says.

    Students love the combi-

    nation of the theorywe teach

    together with the hands-on

    baking. They also greatly

    benefit from their job shad-

    ow at local bakeries, which

    gives them the opportunity

to discover some of the finer

    skills they require to man-

    age a small business.

    Partnerships with local

    bakeries afforded these

    learners with an opportuni-

ty to experience working in a commercial

kitchen for the first time, she says.

This nine-week course consists of two

days of training per week Wednesdays for

business skills theory and Thursdays for

    baking practicals.

FCD will also be offering another entre-

    preneurial programme a business skills

    course to help inexperienced business

    owners succeed in their businesses.

We will teach our students business

skills that will enable them to successfully

run their existing businesses or give them

the confidence and knowledge to go out

    there and start anewbusiness, saysGelder-

    man .

The modules will cover business plan-

ning, costing and pricing as well as market-

    ing.

This course will also be running on

Wednesdays and Thursdays from 08:00 to

    16:00.

To attend this course, candidates should

have Grade 10 and have been operating an

informal business for a period of at least

    three months.

We hope that this course will inspire our

students to take that first step and realise

that as they grow their businesses, they can

become part of the solution to the unemploy-

    ment problem in the country.

There are several ways in which the com-

munity can get involvedwith this initiative,

    continues Gelderman.

People can identify individuals with tal-

    ent and potential fromvulnerable communi-

ties and introduce them to the services of-

    fered by the centre.

They can also become job shadow or job

placement partners for the graduates of the

courses, or offer their time, services or fi-

nances to ensure the continuity of this com-

    munity initiative, she says.

V Courses continue to run throughout the year and

interested students, sponsors or donors can contact

    FCDon021 975 7764or visitwww.fisantekraal.org.za.

Tania Shimmers, front, a bake for profit student, is helping with

some baking at the Tuttis Bakery in Parow. With her are two

staff members, Samantha Davids (left) and Violet Tom.

Students Zukiswa Ncubeni, Jason October and Lena Jones participated in job shadowing at

Vodacoms call centre on completion of their office basics training.

Six thugs were apprehended by Bracken-

fell police on Old Paarl Road on Wednes-

    day.

The five men and one woman were ar-

rested on several charges including that

of possession of a stolen motor vehicle

and stolen goods, possession of a danger-

ous weapon, and dagga. Implements used

to break into cars as well as a home-made

knife with a 30cm long blade were found

    in the vehicle.

    Sergeants Etienne Jonas and Chantel-

le Nutt were doing routine patrols when

they received a backup call from the Bell-

ville police, who were following the sus-

pects who appeared suspicious down Old

    Paarl Road, says police spokesperson

    Warrant Officer Erica Crous.

Jonas and Nutt responded within min-

utes and pulled over the blue Toyota Co-

rolla on the corner of Brackenfell Boule-

    vard and Old Paarl Road.

When they tested the vehicle, it

showed up as stolen in Harare in 2013,

and upon searching the vehicle they

found the stolen goods, a front loader CD

    player and amplifier,weapons and imple-

    ments, says Crous.

    The suspects, all fromRavensmead, ap-

peared in the Blue Downs Magistrates

    Court on Friday.

    ESM ERASMUS

    @erasmusesme

    A

Grade 3 pupil of Kenridge Primary

    School was almost kidnapped this

past Friday while she was waiting for

her mother to fetch her from school.

This came amidst several hoax reports on

social media of attempted child kidnap-

pings at various schools around the Boland

and northern suburbs recently. In one of

these hoax reports a Toyota Quantummini-

bus was reported as suspicious, but turned

out to be agents of Ozone Aqua selling their

    products.

But this time, it really happened.

According to the principal, Sandy Smith,

the child was standing near the Koos Ek-

steen hockey field at the stop street on the

corner of Van RiebeeckAvenue and Rhodes

    Street at about 13:15.

    A white kombi-type vehicle with a man

and a woman inside stopped next to the girl

and they told her that hermother had asked

them to fetch her from school.

The girl turned around and ran back into

the school grounds, Smith said. Themother

came to fetch her child and they reported

the incident to the police and theCNi armed

response, but did not lay a charge.

    Captain Marchell Rhode, media spokes-

person of the Durbanville police, confirmed

the incident was reported to the head of sec-

tor 3 of the Durbanville police.

However, he said that it was reported to

the police that the vehicle in question was

    a white bakkie.

According to Rhode the sector head said

they have been doing regular patrols at the

    school since the incident.

Weve put out a message to our parents

to collect their children on time after

school. We have also instructed our chil-

dren to wait for their parents inside the

school grounds and have teachers standing

in our car park at home time to ensure the

    learners safety, said Smith.

CNi armed response is also patrolling the

entrances to the school at both sides when

the school comes out in Tygervalley Road

and Van Riebeeck Road, says Stephen

Swartz, manager of the response unit of CNi

    armed response.

According to him they are also on the

lookout for suspicious vehicles or people in

    the vicinity of the school.

In another real incident two girls also es-

caped kidnapping at the Rusthof Primary

    School in Strand last Wednesday.

    Deputy principal Ikraam Wentzel con-

firmed the ten-year-old Grade 5 girls were

approached by an elderly woman with long

blonde hair, dressed in black, and a man in

a blue bakkie. The woman tried to force the

girls into the bakkie, but they managed to

break free and ran back into the school

    grounds.

This came amidst several alleged false re-

ports of attempts to snatch children or peo-

ple taking photographs of children at

    schools and elsewhere.

The rumours of children being targeted

at schools in the northern suburbs as well

as in Franschhoek, Strand, Somerset West

and Paarl started making the rounds a few

months ago in social media like WhatsApp

    and Facebook.

    Durbanville police warned that people

must make sure of their facts before they

post or distribute alerts on social media.

eing a drug addict has been likened to

    wearing a mask.

At first you find the seemingly self-

confident person looking back at you in the

mirror intriguing, but before too long you

cannot even recall the real you.

You become themask, and without it you

feel incomplete. Every now and again an

addict will experience a moment of clarity

and yearn to be free. However, this is the

    exception rather than the rule.

    According to Ramots manager, Lettie

Visser, the vast majority of patients who

walk through their doors are there because

of someone else. More often than not a

loved one or an employer demands the pa-

tient comes for treatment. It is rare that pa-

tients realise themselves their addiction ac-

tually hurts those closest to them themost.

With Drug AwarenessWeek from 24 to 28

June just around the corner, TygerBurger

spoke to one of the rehabilitation centres

    operating in the northern suburbs.

    Ramot Treatment Centre for Substance

Dependence in Parow was established in

    1964 by theDutchReformedChurchandhas

since guided thousands of addicts from all

over South Africa to a full recovery.

By far the two most common addictions

they treat are alcohol and tik dependence.

Every week on a Tuesday and Thursday

people from all walks of life are admitted

and subjected to an intense and profession-

    ally managed rehabilitation programme,

consisting of one week of detox and four

    weeks of structured in-patient pro-

grammes. Ultimately, all of the patients are

drug-free by the time they are discharged.

At Ramot, once patients are out of detox,

    theydont just lie in bed.Wehavemanypro-

grammes designed to assist them in their

recovery. We provide structure, a good diet,

a creativeworkshop and a gym, to namebut

a few benefits, says Visser. We are rather

unique in the fact thatwe dont have former

addicts on the payroll, but rather profes-

sional, qualified and registered staff. We do,

however, make use of ex-addict volunteers.

We have the therapeutic services of a psy-

chologist, a biokineticist, social workers, a

    teacher and a spiritual counsellor.

We see the ugly side of dagga addiction.

It blocks the normal cognitive and emotion-

al development of adolescents. We have had

patients here in their thirties with themen-

tal and emotional capacity of teenagers.

Their sense of responsibility is so far re-

moved from reality that it seems almost a

    lost cause.

Donations from the public are invaluable

and serves an incredibly great cause. Any-

one who wants to show their support can

    go to our website, www.ramot.co.za.

    Ranting over

    rising rental

    rates

At the start of July my 22-month-old baby

boy will be living in his third home

    poor kid.

It has gotten so bad that his first

coherent sentence might very well be

    Pack it in a box.

Quite astonishingly, I have moved 23

times in 17 years. Suffice to say, I know

what Im talking about when it comes to

    rental prices.

It has also struck me how little home

owners know about the price of renting a

    decent place in Cape Town.

All they are concerned about is wheth-

er they will be paying a little more or a

little less next month due to the interest

    rate.

As rental tenants we face an industry

standard annual price hike of 10%!

Every year we are 10% poorer! Add

half a cup of Eskom and a spoonful of

inflation and you have a baked monstros-

    ity that chips teeth.

    In just seven

    years from now

    one can expect to

    pay double one

    pays now!

    A shoestring

    budget can only be

    cut so much. Soon

    there will be no

    shoestring left!

    Agents and

    owners who rent

    out their properties

    have no problem

    getting tenants

    because of the

    great migration

from the rest of the country to Cape

    Town.

    Someone ought to tell Gautengers

perhaps they are better off in the north.

I compared renting prices from Gaut-

eng and Cape Town this week. I fully

expected to see a similarity in what you

    can get for R10 000 a month.

With that money I can rent a nice

townhouse with an impressive garden in

one of the best security complexes in

Pretoria. In Cape Town I have seen

    smaller townhouses with smaller gardens

in Kraaifontein go for R10 000.

I love Cape Town, but something

drastically needs to happen to curb

renting prices, which are quite obviously

    completely out of control.

The only way to keep head above water

    seems to buy property.

The other day I went into a book store

and saw one in the self-help section about

    empowering a middle income household

to buy a house in South Africa.

I paged through it in disbelief and

returned it to where it belongs the

    fiction section. Rent-a-lot

I wonder if Ilse Haas is not a

bit too harsh in her description

    of the terrible Capetonians

    (Cape Town and its clicky

circles, TB, 8 June). The truth

is that in most cities people

are busy and have their own

circles; it is not just a Cape

    Town thing.

But I wonder how far her

    own ideas actually make it

    worse? There are ways to

    make friends. My daughter and

    family relocated to Australia a

few years ago, landed in a

    small town with no other

    South Africans, and by being

    active and helpful at school,

    joining a local church, inviting

people over for a braai and

    just being friendly and outgo-

    ing, they have more friends

    than they can handle now.

I myself arrived here in the

Cape 23 years ago and had to

    hear from the Pretoria crowd

    how distant the Capetonians

were. Within a few months I

had a few good friends and I

still wait to meet these horri-

    ble Capetonians (they are

there, but they should not be

    your norm).

It takes a bit of effort and

    moving out of ones comfort

zone, but it can be done. Ilse,

you are welcome to phone me

    Its not just a

    Cape Town thing

More often than not when our

    government hospitals appear in

the papers, they take the rap.

This time Im writing to say a

    special thank you to the

    excellent team at the Special

    Care Unit, Obstetric and

    Gynaecology, of Tygerberg

    Hospital.

I am a foreigner who has

lived in and loved Cape Town

for the past five years. Al-

    though living healthily with a

    health complication known as

    sickle cell anemia, I knew

    having children would be no

    mean feat for me.

When I fell pregnant with my

    first daughter in 2013, my

    doctor referred me to the

    Special Care Unit at Tygerberg.

I met Professor Hull and his

team back then and it was a

    wonderful experience being

    managed by them. Although I

was in the hospital for the most

part of the pregnancy, I had no

    regrets. Hence I returned barely

two years later in 2015. Again,

this team was up to the task in

    terms of professionalism, care

and the help they rendered to

    ensure I had another healthy

baby and that my health didnt

    deteriorate.

Sickle cell anemia is not a

    health complication that doctors

    see frequently in South Africa.

For some of the doctors on the

team it was their first encoun-

ter of a patient with sickle cell

    anemia and being pregnant was

a very high risk. Hull and his

team went over and above the

call of duty. In conjunction with

    the haematology unit, my

    pregnancies were well managed

in spite of the multiple hospital-

    isations due to sickle cell

    anemia. complications in the

    W

hat if TygerBurger werent a news-

    paper, but a broadcasting agency?

What if you werent bound to lis-

ten to hyper local news impacting on the

suburb you live in, but rather the northern

    suburbs as a whole?

Would this then contradict what Tyger-

    Burger stands for?

Followers of the newspaper on Facebook

    wouldhavenoticed anew feature aweekly

    wrap-up video posted every Tuesday.

In this short video some of the articles

that appear in the newspaper are highlight-

ed, giving you the biggestweekly news from

the northern suburbs in bite-sized chunks.

    Some broadcasters bring you global

news, some focus on a particular city, but

no-one targets a relatively small area such

    as the northern suburbs.

    Thismeans, of course, that thenewspaper

continues to set the bar of hyper local con-

    tent across all mediums.

One of WP Medias journalists, Brenden

Ruiter, asked himself how one can spread

the news in a digital world, and make it as

easy as possible for Facebook users to stay

    up to date.

The answer was simple, he says.

Why not a weekly news bulletin? We

    started amonthor twoago and thepopulari-

ty of the videos is for all to see. Its still a

work in progress, of course, with finer de-

    tails still being ironed out.

A couple of minutes a week to stay up to

date with news headlines? The viewers

convenience is clearly the catch phrase.

Another imminent adoption will be roll-

ing text, whichwill mean one canwatch the

video with no sound if necessary.

In essence, it is a news broadcast with a

    verybrief description of the chosenarticles.

If one snippet piques your interest, you

can read more about it on the newspapers

free website under the Netwerk24 domain.

All you need to do is type tygerburger.co.za

into the URL bar of your browser.

The same concept has also been embraced

    by the southern suburbs Peoples

Post, so in just six minutes you can

    get a community newspapers per-

    spective of happenings in thewhole

    of Cape Town.

    Peoples Post journalist and bulle-

    tin presenter Samantha Lee says

    the additional challenge has been

    an exciting venture thus far.

This venture helps us satisfy the

news needs of those on the move

and assists our journalists in tell-

ing the inspiring stories of others

that may not have made it into the

    readers relevant editions.

    DESIRE RORKE

    n

    Week voor verlede Kersfees het

    dokters haar familie meegedeel dat

niks meer vir haar gedoen kan

word nie. Net n wonderwerk kon haar nog

    red.

stand so versleg dat medici alle hoop ver-

Hy

neem. Sy het ook almal aangeraak met

haar sterk geloofsoortuiging, s haar ma,

    Ricky Faro.

Sy en haar ma ry elke 15de dag van

Springbok af Kaap toe vir behandeling.

Twee weke gelede het sy egter haar be-

handeling gestaak.

Vollgraaff wat ook by Reach for a Dream

betrokke is, het Jaydeen se droom help be-

drome bewaarheid sal word, voeg sy by.

Ek

leer myself nou fotos neem en neem fotos

van alles en almal, s sy. Terug in Spring-

sy. Ek is glad nie meer bang nie. Ek is n

kind van ons Pappa Jesus. Hy het my ge-

    kies omSywerkvirHomopaarde te doen,

s sy. Haar ma, Ricky, s hulle sal binne

    nmaandweet of haar liggaamverder afge-

    nuwe minireeks Die Koekemoers.

Die reeks word deur ATKV aangebied en

Die Koekemoers is n doodgewone alle-

daagse gesin wat van vakansie hou veral

as hulle kan kamp, vertel Liz. Daar is n

kmmin streep in hulle soos meeste mense

Liz verduidelik dat die uitdagings waar-

    met n goeie skep humor.
