At a safety planning meeting held last

Increased visibility by the BBID, security

personnel and the police will be central to the

    plan, said Van Zijl.

Awie Viljoen, chairman of the BBID, sug-

gested that the banks be informed of concerns

relating to expected incidents of crime and al-

so be requested to give their input.

We have to point out certain risks and re-

quest banks to appoint security services at

    street level ATMs, he added.

In addition to this, the forum will request

the alcohol officer at the Brackenfell police

station to enforce trading hours at all pubs in

the area in the coming weeks.

    According toVanZijl, several problems can

    be expectedat pubsandother social gathering

    places.

Apart from the fact that all these places

will become vulnerable to armed robberies,

alcohol abuse related incidents such as fight-

ing and drunken and reckless driving will

rise sharply during the festive season, he

said, adding that cooperation with the police,

Metro and traffic departments had to be en-

    sured to counteract this.

Van Zijl said roleplayers such as the police,

traffic and Metro departments will be en-

gaged in the upcoming weeks to discuss how

the forums safety plan will tie in with their

own strategies and operational plans for the

    festive season.

It was suggested that a joint operational

centre be establishedduring this time to effec-

tively coordinate efforts and that additional

meetings with law enforcement agencies be

    scheduled soon.

    O

n Friday morning the Doing Good

    Better campaign gained momen-

tum ahead of the festive season in

    a collaboration between the CapeGate

    management team,Brackenfell police and

    Teahmo Social Support.

    This campaign encourages responsi-

ble giving during the festive season and

    is supported by numerous organisations

    and charities, explains CapeGates mar-

    keting manager, Amanda McCarthy.

These include MES and Shiloh, she

    says.

By giving meal vouchers rather than

cash, you can help make a difference in

the lives of the most vulnerable people in

our community and help break the cycle

    of poverty.

Each voucher entitles the bearer to a

    healthy,warmmeal in a safe environment

and will also give them access to counsel-

    ling and advice.

    Spectacular kites, including a 30-metre

worm and a family of octopi designed by

Parow kite maker Ian Islip, adorned the

skies of Muizenberg on Saturday at the

    21st international kite festival.

Kiters from four countries (South Af-

rica, Germany, the Netherlands and the

United Kingdom) showed off their col-

ourful creations at what was supposed

    to be a two-day festivalwith kite-making

    workshops, competitions and amass fly.

But the host and beneficiary of what

    has becomeAfricas biggest kite festival,

Cape Mental Health, suffered a major fi-

    nancial blow on Sundaywhen gale-force

winds and heavy rains led to the cancel-

lation of the second day of the festivities.

Deputy director Vimla Pillay says be-

cause of the sudden change in theweath-

er an anticipated income of at least

    R300 000 was blown away.

The decision followed the event safety

    officers directive.

The funds raised at this annual event

are used to help uplift the lives of chil-

dren and adults affected by mental disa-

bilities by providing vital mental health

    services.

The kite festival is our biggest fun-

draising and awareness event of the

year. We had a wonderful day on Satur-

    day, says Pillay.

Cape Mental Health is South Africas

    oldest mental health organisation and

has been providing mental health servi-

nog net deur die Lions-organisasie ge-

bruik, s sy. In n besoek aan die eiendom

vroer vanjaar, het Peter Sutter van die

    Brackenfell-belastingbetalersvereniging

verskeie probleme op die terrein aanTyger-

    Burgeruitgewys. Talle hawelosemense ge-

Sutter ges.

    koop is later geadver-

    teer, maar het heftige

    aksie ontlok.

    Maar intussen bly

    die probleem voortbe-

staan en het dit ook aan

    die lig gekomdat die ge-

    boutjie (wat bekend

    staan as die Voortrek-

    kerhuisie), op die per-

    seel die enigste bewa-

    ringswaardige gebou in

    die gebied is, s sy.

    Die gemeenskap het

    dan reeds versoek dat

    die gebou gerestoureer

    word en behoue bly.

    Volgens Nieuwoudt

    het die grond egter be-

    perkte konstruksiepo-

    tensiaal, omdat dit bin-

    ne-in reeds ontwikkel-

    de erwe gele is en

    groot dele daarvan grootmaat-versprei-

grambestuurder by The Pink Drive se Wes-

    Kaapse kantoor.

    Di nie-winsgewende organisasie wat n

    mobiele mammografie-kliniek in die Wes-

Kaap bestuur, was die begunstigdes van die

    Play for Pink-beweging se liefdadigheidstee

van 2015, wat Saterdagoggend in die All Star-

    teater in Brackenfell plaasgevind het.

Dit was di beweging se eerste fondsinsa-

The Pink Drive is in 2011 in vennootskap

met die Tygerberg-hospitaal gestig om uit te

reik na behoeftige gemeenskappe met die fo-

kus op vroegtydige opsporing van borskan-

ker.

    dersteuning.

Die Play for Pink-beweging is verlede jaar

    deurKarenNortier van stapel gestuur, nadat

die Horskool Brackenfell se eerste krieket-

span in pienk hemde begin speel het om be-

wusmaking rondom borskanker aan te wak-

ker.

ste span gespeel en ek was so genspireer

    DieDuToits, oorspronklik vanHopetown,

kom besoek afl by die Familia Christie-

    dogtertjie, Cheara, se wonderbaarlike her-

    stel n twee leweroorplantings.

was en vir God ges: As U haar gesond

    tiewe geelsug gehad, vertel Juan-Mari.

    Mari.

Cheara het toe op 10 weke haar eerste

    noodoperasie ondergaan,waartydens vasge-

    skaars genetiese lewergebrek, naamlik Al-

    pha-1 antitripsien-tekort.

Dit tas die lewer aan en

soms ook die longe en vel.

Cheara was gelys vir n le-

    weroorplanting die enig-

    ste kuur vir di siekte,

    vertel haar ma.

    n Oorplanting is toe ty-

    dens n prosedure van agt

    uur lank op 13 Desemeber

    2013 gedoen met haar pa,

    Charl, as die skenker.

    Maar Cheara se lig-

    gaampie het di lewer ver-

    werp. Sy het sieker ge-

    raak as ooit, s Juan-Ma-

    ri.

    Teen Oktober laas jaar

    was Cheara toeweer terug

op die waglys vir n nuwe

    lewer.

    Maar Juan-Mari s die

    gewag vir n nuwe lewer

    was n lang een.

    N vele gebede het n

    engelmens uit die bloute

    vir my n e-pos gestuur.

    Haar man se neef se

    vrou het aangebied om te

    toets as skenker.

    Ons was baie bly, want

    daar wasmin hoop vir ons

    meisiekind.

Die Du Toits het hul eg-

    ter vasgeloop teen die

    landswette n lewende le-

    weroorplanting vanaf n

    voortgaan.

    Ons was verby moedeloos.

bed te lande gekom by Wits se Donald Gor-

don-mediese sentrum die enigste in die

    land wat lewende skenker-leweroorplan-

    tings doen.

Cheara het geskiedenis gemaak as die

eerste persoon in die landwat n nie-verwan-

    te, lewende skenker-leweroorplanting gekry

het. Vandag lag en speel sy.

Juan-Mari s dis die rede hoekom hul so-

ver en soveel moontlik getuienis afl.

Belangstellendes kan die gesin en hul in-

    spirerendeboodskapontmoet bydieFamilia

    RICHARD ROBERTS

    @richardjohn_rj

    Motorists using the R300 highway

    and Stellenbosch Arterial have been

warned to be vigilant against stone

    throwers in these areas.

The Mfuleni police issued a warn-

ing last week following several re-

ports of stone throwing incidents on

    these two roads.

    Captain Nomathemba Muavha, po-

lice spokesperson, said as from Tues-

day 20 October to Friday 23 October

three such cases had been reported at

he police station one on the Stellen-

    boschArterial nearWesbank and two

along the R300 between the N2 and

    Hindle Road.

Two of these cases occurred dur-

ing the day and the other at night, aft-

    er 20:00.

The motive for these stone throw-

ings, we suspect, is to get themotorist

to stop in order for the attackers to

rob them of their belongings, Muav-

    ha said.

A similar incident was reported on

the Kuils River community page on

    Facebook on Thursday 15 October.

People, please be careful on the

R300, there are guys throwing stones

from the footbridge near the arterial

off-ramp. Myself and a few other peo-

ple just got hit. Please be alert, the

    victim wrote shortly after 15:00.

A photo of his damaged vehicle was

    also uploaded onto the page.

    Kenny Africa, provincial traffic

chief, told TygerBurger this week the

R300 as well as the N2 highway are

both considered high crime risk are-

    as.

He says the N2 from Jakes Gerwel

Drive to Macassar and the N7 from

    Philippi toDunoon are especially vul-

    nerable areas.

We request that motorists do not

stop along these roads the R300 as

well. This is another area where spe-

    cial attention is given to.

Africa said a special task team pa-

trols these highways 24 hours a day.

In a media statement recently is-

sued by the department of safety and

    security,Maycomember JPSmith re-

iterated the calls for motorists to be

    vigilant along these roads.

Between 21 September and 18 Oc-

    tober, 11 crime-related incidentswere

recorded on the N2 and R300. This in-

    cluded two robberies, four attempted

    robberies, two incidents of stone-

throwing, a road rage incident, and

the recovery of two bodies along the

N2 between the R300 and Jakes Ger-

wel Drive, Smith said, and pleaded

    to motorists not to stop.

    T

he suburbs of Kraaifontein and Brack-

enfell have so far been hit the hardest

with the invasion of the German and

European paper wasp into suburban gar-

dens this spring, and with limited funding

available from city authorities, the problem

could become critical in the coming summer

    months.

We only received half the fundingwe had

hoped for and as things are going now, our

funds will be depleted by the end of Novem-

ber, said a very concerned Ulrike Irlich

from the City of Cape Towns invasive spe-

cies management office at a recent council

    meeting.

According to Irlich, the project manager

    of the invasivewasps control (IWC)division,

    these two neighbourhoods represent the

core of the problemareawithmore than 1000

nests removed from households here since

    the start of the season.

    Wasp season usually occurs duringwarm-

er periods, from September to May.

The IWC was launched by the City in 2014

in answer to the threat of this invasion and

offers a free service to citizens who detect

the wasps in and around their homes.

Capacity is a problem though, says Irlich,

with nest removal teams being booked up to

    two months in advance.

Two teams consisting of four people each

are currently responsible for the entire af-

fected area which, according to Irlich, has

started to spread from the far northern areas

of Cape Town to southern suburbs such as

    Kirstenbosch.

Ideally we need more people on the

ground to fight this invasion, she said.

Irlich indicated that it will cost the City

R26 000 to deploy one team with specialised

suits and equipment for a period of one

month funds the IWC does not have.

Specialised suits are needed to remove the

    European paperwasps, which are especially

    aggressive.

Irlich warns the public against this spe-

cies. They tend to form super colonies and

become very aggressive when disturbed. It

will follow people if threatened, she said.

One of the challenges experienced is the

spreading of nests from house to house.

The wasp forages up to 100 metres away

from the nest and could be in your neigh-

bours yard while we are busy sweeping

yours for nests. Those not killed simply re-

    turn tobuild anothernest. Itwould therefore

be ideal to sweep entire streets at a time.

To this end she encouraged the public to

report sightings to the City via the spotter

    network at www.capetowninvasives.org.

    za/edrr/target-list, to arrange removal.

If nests are removed privately, property

owners are also urged to sendus reports con-

taining their street address and the number

of nests removed to help uswith future plan-

    ning and research.

She added that property owners are pri-

marily responsible for pest control on their

premises, but that the IWC will assist ac-

    cording to available capacity.

    SLICE OF LIFE

    Dont forget

    the why of

    Movember

Its that time of year when men pack

away their razors and start growing

    facial hair, that is.

And while grooming your moustache to

be the best it can be is the aim for the

this month, its vital to remember the

    reason behind the movement.

The simple truth is that its not a

competition to see who has the biggest

beard. The point of Movember, now an

    international annual movement, is to

create awareness of mens health during

    the month of November.

Its initial aim was to get men talking

about prostate cancer, but the movement

has now grown to encompass testicular

    cancer, mental health and physical

    inactivity.

This year men are being encouraged to

get moving for the entire month to tackle

the latter. So, round up your friends and

enjoy a friendly game of sport.

One in every 23 South African men will

develop prostate cancer in their lifetime,

while testicular cancer remains the most

common cancer in men. Globally as

many as 510 000 men die from suicide

each year and over three million deaths

every year can be attributed to insuffi-

    cient physical activity.

Growing impressive facial hair is not

enough its time to tell your friends

why. Instead of just admiring each

others hair growth, its time to deal with

the big issues: Share your personal

experiences of stress, anxiety and depres-

sion, and encourage each other to get

    regular medical check-ups.

splinternuwe album getiteld Diep in my

    Venter.

authentic Broers, s Christo.

    My Droomvrou.

Hulle gaanmet hul vertoning by Die Boer

    Christo.

    From coast to

    Lohann with Chaeli

    Mycroft, whose

    organisation is the

    main benefactor from

    his coast to coast

    walk for wheel

    MICHELLE LINNERT

    @linnertmb

    B

    ellville learner Lohann Roelofse re-

cently completed his coast to coast

walk for wheelchairs in aid of the

    Chaeli campaign.

His proud dad, Pierre, wrote to Tyger-

Burger to report on Lohanns big walk

from Struisbaai all the way to Big Bay in

    Blouberg.

Whatmakes his sons effort so extraordi-

nary, is the fact that Lohannwas bornwith

extra and webbed toes and fingers.

Some of the extra digits were surgically

removed soon after birth up until he was

two years old, with many more operations

    following until Lohann was 10.

The Grade 12 learner is a natural leader

and as such Lohann is currently deputy

head boy at Stellenberg High School.

He often still uses crutches and a wheel-

    chair.

    Because Lohann realised how difficult

life was for wheelchair-bound people, he

wanted to make some sort of a difference

and the idea of the walk started taking

    form.

Pierre tells: The walk was completed

without any incidents and took Lohann

    from Struisbaai through Bredasdorp, Nap-

    ier,Caledon,Franschhoek,Klapmuts,Dur-

    banville, Stellenberg and finallyBigBay in

    Blouberg.

Lohann completed the gruelling walk of

250 km in just seven days, Pierre said.

The shortest distance he completed in

one day, was 32 km and the longest a gruel-

    ling 44 km.

At one stage itwas very difficult for him

and he had to revert to his crutches and

    even his wheelchair, Pierre said.

This caused blisters on his hands, but he

    never gave up.

Pierre said during the last two days of

the walk, which took place earlier this

year, Lohann was greatly supported by

friends and family whowalked parts of the

    distance with him.

On the last day of his walk Lohanns

route went past his school. There he had

    an overwhelming reception from learners

    and personnel, Pierre said.

There was even a placard reading Mar-

    ryme, Lohann! This reception greatlymo-

    tivated him.

Lohann managed to gather R40 000 for

theChaeli campaign and anotherR8 800 to-

    wards his schools charitable fund.

Chaelis mom and CEO of the Chaeli

campaign, Zelda Mycroft, had the follow-

ing to say: Children need to believe in

their ownabilities so that they can contrib-

    ute to their community.

Themoneywill be used towards the cam-

    paigns early childhood development pro-

    grammes.

The Chaeli campaign has also made Lo-

hann a Friend of the Chaeli campaign,

which is a select group of individuals who

go above and beyond to assist and sup-

    port their organisation, Zelda added.

Pierre once more thanked the entire

    community who so generously opened

theirhearts toLohanns effort and the cam-

    paign.

Here Lohann walks past his own school on his way to Bloubergstrand. His dad, Pierre, jokingly

said Lohann was even propositioned for marriage during his wonderful receptioninpassing at

    the school.

offee lovers in the northern suburbs

neednt drive all the way to Blouberg-

    strand orOranjezicht for their favour-

    ite Carluccis cuppa.

    Carluccis has opened shopat theMeeren-

dal wine estate just outside Durbanville

    about three weeks ago.

    BrendanPayze, coffeemaestro and owner

of Carluccis, has about 14 years of experi-

ence in coffee-making. He was trained by

    the famous Giovanni Esposito himself.

    Cappuchino, latte, Rooibos cappuchino,

Mocha chino youname it, and he makes

    it.

Payze only uses freshly roasted coffee

therefore they roast the beans on a weekly

basis and imports coffee from all around

    the world.

The house blend consists of seven differ-

ent coffee beans three fromAfricaand four

    from South America.

    Carluccis Bistro serves single origin

bean coffee such as the 100%Ethiopean Sid-

amo, 100% organic Nicaragua, a South

    Americancoffee, andalso a 100%Indiancof-

fee named Indian Monsoon. These coffee

berries are not picked like ordinary coffee,

but left to drop and fermented, and only

    then dried and roasted.

According to him, the secret of excellent

coffee lies in consistency the correct way

of making the foam to a silky smooth layer-

    ed treat.

The trick is in the top. It

takes two to three years of

    practise to reach consisten-

    cy, he smiles knowingly.

    Payze, who was born in

    Zimbabwe, literally grew

up in the hotel industry as

his father owned a hotel in

    Johannesburg.

    The menu at Carluccis

    offers several breakfast op-

    tions, including eggs bene-

    dict, authentic boiled ba-

    gels and freshly baked

    croissants. They have

    three bakers baking more

    than 30 different types of

    bread.

    For lunch they offer,

    among others, a selection

    of chicken dishes such as

Sweet Thai Chicken, Thai Plum Chicken,

ChickenGenova and Chicken Tikka all al-

    so available in a wrap.

They plan to serve bubbly jazz brunches

and gourmet picnic baskets. There is also

awine barrelwith balls of all sorts for enter-

tainment for children, and visitors can buy

    coffee beans, whole or

    grounded, from the bistro.

    The wine-tasting venue

    at Meerendal, which was

    situated at the bistro earli-

er, was moved to a venue

    adjacent to the Crown Res-

    taurant.

    Bennie Howard, market-

    ing manager of Meerendal,

says the idea was to create

    a space where sports people

who make use of the moun-

tain bike routes on the farm

can chill over a brunch or

    light meal.

    A bike shop, Rocky

    Mountain, also opened its

    doors at Meerendal recent-

ly to supply in the needs of

    mountain bikers.

A perfect coffee. The secret is

in consistency and to get the

    foam just right, says Brendan
