St. Francis of Assisi Parish – Teutopolis, Illinois page 2

From the Pastor

The parishioners of St. Francis extend our sympathies and condolences to the family of Leroy Overbeck. Sister Death embraced Leroy on Monday morning, and his funeral was Friday. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. This Sunday morning our Ladies will enjoy a delicious breakfast served by the gentlemen in the parish. We thank the CCW and all ladies for their contribution to the life of the parish. I’m sure all of us were impressed when we entered church and saw the beautiful fall decorations on our altars. We have some very talented and gifted people in the parish. The ladies from Art and Environment, responsible for our fall decorations are: Rita Habing, Angie Hotzie, Connie and Marlene Hille, Janice Koester, Jodie Pruemer, Barb Runde, Marissa Schabbing, and Clara and Kelsey Swingler. Thank you, Ladies. The parish pictorial directory project is off the ground. This project occurs every five years, and we are due for a new book in 2017. Sandy Gillespie, Lois Meinhart and Sharon Waldhoff have generously offered to serve as the committee to direct the project this year. If members of your family are in college, you might wish to note that there will be dates for taking family pictures on 26 thru 30 December, during Christmas break. You will be able to go on line and book your photo session. If you missed the collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, you can still donate. Simply place your envelope in the collection next Sunday, and we’ll see that it gets where it needs to go. The AMS is allowed to take up this collection only once every three years, so please be generous – they support all the military people. The long political campaign is over. Now is time for our country to work towards unity. Let us pray for and sup-port our newly elected people across our county, state and country.

Attention Parishioners— There are 103 children in Grades 1 And 2 preparing Christmas Shoe-boxes filled with gifts for the poor children of the world. The cost to mail these is $7.00 per box totaling $721.00. If anyone would like to help the children in these two grades ship their shoeboxes, please consider placing your dona-tion in an envelope marked “Shoebox” and drop it in the collection basket on the weekend. If writing a check, please make out the check to St. Francis Church. This way you can take part in the Shoebox project along with the children. Thank you greatly for your help!

Year of Mercy: Closing the Mercy Door. Pope Francis set this day, 13 of November, as the day to close diocesan Mercy Doors. That does not mean, however, that God will stop being mer-ciful. And it surely does not mean that we have done enough, that we can stop doing mercy. These mercy works, these mercy words help broaden our focus from “only me and mine” to “always us and always ours”. Such words pave the way to heaven. How will my heart remain open? How will my words match my works? How will my hands offer help?

Laudato Si: Translating the Works of Mercy in light of Laudato Si’

Corporal Works of Mercy

Feed the hungry; especially those who suffer from poverty and drought.

Give drink to the thirsty; especially those who lack clean, abundant water.

Clothe the naked; especially those exposed to the cold of winter and the sting of indifference.

Shelter the homeless; especially victims of war, storms and rising seas.

Care for the sick; especially those who have been poisoned by the waste of our industries.

Ransom the captives; especially those oppressed by cruel economic and political systems, or from addic-tions to the pleasures of the world.

Protect the dignity of the human person; especially in reverently burying the dead.

Care for our common home; especially air, water, soil and natural resources that belong to no one but all of us.

She’s coming! She’s coming! Get ready to walk through Scriptures with Mary, the Blessed Mother. Beginning November 29th for four consecutive Tuesdays we will journey with Mary and explore the Biblical roots of our beliefs about her. 10:00-11:30 a.m. and 7:00-8:30 p.m. in St. Clare Hall with a $15.00 cost for materials. Please call 857-6404 for more information or to register.

I am trying to prepare the serving schedule for the Christmas Masses. This year, on Christmas Eve there will be a 4:00pm Mass at which there are 4 servers (from Grade 5-12), a 6:00pm Mass at which there are 4 servers (from grade 5-12) and a 10:30 pm Mass at which there are 12 torch bearers (from Grade 4,5,6,7 & 8) and 5 servers (from Grade 8-12). On Christmas Day there is a 9:00 am Mass at which we need 4 servers (from Grade 4-12). If you and your family are planning to attend any of these Masses, and your child is interested in serving the Mass or being a torch bearer, please noti-fy me. I am well aware that some families celebrate their family Christmas on Christmas Eve and some on Christmas Day. To help me avoid a lot of scheduling hassles, I would appreciate knowing if your child could and would possibly be able to serve any of these Masses. I ask that you please contact me at 821-9950 by Wednesday, November 16th, if your child is willing and able to serve any of these times. This way I can have these assignments listed in the December schedule. I am also trying to schedule servers for the Masses on the holy day, January 1 (Mary Mother of God). Mass times are on Saturday, December 31 (New Year’s Eve) at 4:00pm and 5:30pm and on Sunday, January 1 at 8:30am and 10:30am. If your child is willing to serve any of these Masses please let me know by November 16th. Thank you for any help that you can give me! Barb Runde

Speaking in Quiet ...I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking…

Luke 21:15 When Jesus speaks of the end times, he assures his disci-ples they need not be concerned about what to say in de-fense of themselves or his teachings. When I am with peo-ple who approach their own or a loved one’s “end times” through terminal illness, I turn to this counsel of Jesus to not worry about what to speak. Trusting in divine guid-ance is always a necessity when finding myself with any-one coming to terms with mortality. I pray for the wisdom to leave behind a desire to defend God when someone is bereft with questions about life’s unfairness or why a mira-cle of healing has not been given. I have learned that words are not always the most helpful. “Speaking” some-times means keeping quiet, not trying to fix another’s pain by what I say but by listening with the heart, entering into their sorrow, surrendering to the Compassionate One’s caring presence and entrusting the hurting one to this great love. Sr. Joyce Rupp, O.S.M. Living Faith

Holy Humor A kindergarten teacher was observing her students draw pictures. When she approached one girl who was working diligently, she asked what she was draw-ing. The girl replied, “Not what, who. I’m drawing God.” The teacher paused and said, “But no one knows what God looks like.” Without hesitation, the girl replied, “They will in a minute.”
