NEW PHILIPPINE OUTREACH: LAMBAKIN UMC PARSONAGE REBUILD
Four years ago, in October 2013, a strong typhoon hit Nueva Ecija and did extensive damage to properties and crops. One of the places hard-hit was Lambakin, Jaen where the church we helped build in 2009 was located. A large mango tree fell on the parsonage which was directly behind the sanctuary. The pastor, his wife and daughter had to live inside the church until repairs could be done. It had been renovated since but just enough for it to become livable. It is high time to build them a new pastor’s house.
The plan to rebuild the parsonage was already in the works even before it was damaged by typhoon. In May 2013, the congregation held a groundbreaking ceremony with the District Superintendent Nomer Lasco in attendance. The plan was for a two-story structure so the ground floor can serve many purposes – office for the pastor, Sunday school room for children and meeting room for the youth and other church groups. Initial estimate is at $20,000 for materials and for wages for a supervising foreman and other skilled labor. The bulk of the labor will be provided by the congregation and other United Methodist volunteer groups. Hopefully, we can partner with Lambakin UMC again to raise funds and send a work team to help in the construction. So far, NUMC has raised around $8,000 from various sources and donations.
Pastor Glenn Dela Cruz, the current pastor, was the same pastor who served Lambakin when they rebuilt the church from 2007 to 2009. His wife Maroz supplements their income by tutoring schoolchildren after school. They have an eight-year old daughter, Niamh. Under his leadership, membership of the church has grown. In appreciation of his tireless work to grow God’s kingdom in this area, his congregation wants to build him and his family a safe and comfortable home.
For their part, each member of the congregation has started a building fund called “Alkansya for Pastoral House.” It is similar to our Change for the World where each member put their change in an empty soda bottle with a picture of the future parsonage to remind them of their goal.
Help us support the Lambakin Parsonage Rebuild with our prayers and gifts. Simply put “Lambakin Parsonage” on the memo of your checks or on the offering envelopes. What better way to make our gifts count by providing a safe home and care for the well-being of all pastors who will live in this parsonage for years to come. – Eleanor Serrano

The Museum of Tolerance is a world-renowned museum that delves into the dark world of racism and prejudice while highlighting the Holocaust as the most extreme example of man's inhumanity to man. Interactive exhibits, two theaters, a research floor and gallery for special exhibitions within the Simon Wiesenthal Center are just part of the experience and soul you will find here Join the Primetimers on Friday, October 27. We will meet the bus near the YAC at 9:00 AM. Cost for the event is $32.50 (bus is $22; entrance is $10.50). Café is on site for no host lunch.
Your Primetimers Team apologizes for the increase in cost of events. This is related to the dramatic increase in the cost of our bus. Primetimers team is looking forward to planning the 2018 events, so please share your ideas and thoughts with Shiela Attarian, Jo-Ann Seitzinger or Char Anderson.
Senior Tips - From the AARP magazine Rest Easier with Diabetes. For nearly 30 million people who have diabetes the condition is a 24/7 deal. Those with diabetes may work hard all day to control blood sugar only to have glucose levels go haywire when night falls. Luckily some simple lifestyle tweaks can make all the difference according to leading diabetes experts. If you have diabetes or care for someone who does, read on to learn how to keep levels in line day and night
Check Your Meds. Some drugs taken before bed, like steroids or asthma meds, can cause blood sugar fluctuations, according to the president-elect of the American Diabetes Association, Desmond Schatz, MD. Ask your doctor about such side effect.
Keep Cocktails Low Carb. For patients on insulin a glass of wine or a beer with dinner is fine. But too much alcohol can cause blood sugars to drop dangerously while you sleep. Stick to low-carb choices like whiskey, rum and vodka and indulge in moderation.
Add Light Activity. Being sedentary in the evening can make glucose levels rise. Try combining TV time with some moderate activity like exercising on an elliptical machine or lifting hand weights.
Don't Overdo It. Wrap up tougher workouts at least seven hours before going to sleep if possible.
Stick to One Bedtime. Try to take nighttime or basal insulin at the same time each night to ensure more consistent blood sugars. Hitting the hay on a regular schedule is also an easy way to optimize sleep-a smart move since getting too few zzz's over time may increase insulin resistance.
Church and Society Movie Night On Monday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m., Church and Society will
screen the documentary Newtown. Filmed over the course of
nearly three years, Newtown uses personal stories and
interviews to show the aftermath of horrific mass shooting in
Newtown, Connecticut, that took the lives of 20 elementary
school children and six educators on Dec. 14, 2012. This is a
sensitive portrait of a community shaken to its core and
persevering.
The United Methodist Church urges “congregations to advocate
at the local and national level for laws that prevent or reduce gun
violence.” Book of Resolutions, 3428. All forms of violence are
detestable, but guns make violence more deadly and more
frequent. Statistics show that there have been over 1,000 mass shootings since Newtown. And that
over 33,000 people die due to gun violence every year (www.gunviolencearchive.org).
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9.
This documentary may be difficult to watch, but it needs to be seen. Children dying from violence is not a political issue, but a humanitarian issue.

Fellowship
Provisions for the Journey Nancy and I leave this month for Spain on a trip entitled “Pilgrimage into the Past.” We are setting off to discover the Camino de Santiago, one of Europe’s most important pilgrimage routes. For the hikes on this journey we need to plan for what we will take with us and how we will clothe ourselves for the changes in the weather and the terrain.
On October 15, NUMC will begin our Fall Pledge Campaign. In 2018 NUMC will be continuing our Faith Journey. Our church needs to plan for the ministries we will take with us and how we will staff for our spiritual growth.
Please keep our church in your prayers and give careful consideration to your pledge for the coming year. – Mike Easterly (Lay Leader)
Starting in October your Finance Committee will begin efforts to establish a budget for 2018. When
you receive your third quarter giving statements included with the statements will be a pledge card
and return envelope.
Please review your pledge for 2018 and give prayerful consideration to the needs of NUMC as we
fund the many requirements of our church. As always it is our goal to reach out to the community
and follow our mission statement
To celebrate God's grace and love
while inspiring disciples of Jesus Christ
for ministry in our community and the world
