Mark's concern in his Gospel is that his readers know the good news of who Jesus is: God's Son and suffering Messiah. Family Ministries

February is UMCOR Month at NUMC Sunday, February 24 will be NUMC’s UMCOR Sunday with Rev. Brian Diggs as our pulpit guest at the 10 AM service. Rev. Diggs will remind us that money given on UMCOR Sunday goes to UMCOR’s worldwide administrative costs enabling 100% of our donations to special appeals like the California wildfires to go directly to these specific UMCOR projects. UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) is the humanitarian relief and development agency of the United Methodist Church. Over the last four years we sent four mission teams to the UMCOR West Depot in Salt Lake City. Each year our team has grown and more members of NUMC have had the opportunity to serve by completing pallets of hygiene kits and school kits for disaster relief around the world. A highlight of our visits to UMCOR West Depot has been a growing relationship with Rev. Brian Diggs, the Associate Director and leader of the two-person staff at the 22,000 sq. ft. depot facility in Salt Lake City. On the last day of each mission trip Rev. Diggs recruits members of the team to assist him in a communion service. Although Rev. Diggs is known locally in SLC as the tattooed and brawny pro wrestler, “Deacon of Doom”, we all know him as the amazing preacher who captivates us with his message as a part of our closing service. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience one of the reasons we continue to return to UMCOR West Depot to serve God and his people. Plan to attend the Biscuit Bar Brunch at 10 AM on Saturday, February 23 at Reseda - First United Methodist Church. Brian will be presenting an update on UMCOR and the expanding activities supported through the UMCOR West Depot and its weekly mission teams.

Uber and Lyft

Uber? Lyft? Isn’t that the car thing that all the kids are talking about? What does that have to do

with seniors?

One of the things that is of great concern with seniors is when they have to stop driving or are

afraid to drive sometimes or worry if they should give up the keys. How do we continue to be able

to do all the things we enjoy to keep our active lives?

Uber or Lyft? It sounds kind of frightening, but is cheaper than a taxi and is usually available to pick

you up within a few minutes. Not bad when we think that all that we need is a smart phone and the

willingness to try something new. Alice Gratias at 96 has discovered a new way to get to church, or

get to work in the office so satisfactorily that she is talking about selling her car. You can even go

out for dinner without worrying about driving at night. Talk with Alice for more information and a

new way to keep living your active life.

NUMC JAZZ VESPERS Northridge United Methodist Church has the best Jazz Vespers in the Valley attracting the best in musicians in Los Angeles. Reverend Norman Freeman in his Overview of Jazz Vespers makes these observations: “Jazz music emerges as a balm that has the power to heal and inspire, capturing the hope of reconciliation…Jazz reminds us who we are and where we come from while inspiring us into the reality of who we can become in the Risen Christ. Jazz is the music of the social gospel of Jesus Christ.” NUMC was one of the first churches to embrace this music and the innate spiritualism. In 2008 Nancy Easterly, Joan Coston, Stan Ferguson, Greg Averetta, Mike Easterly, Mike Shields, Alitash Kebede, Robin Blomquist, Dick Flaharty, Frank McGinnis, David Shepherd planned the first Jazz Vespers program. It was a success. Eleven years later, Jazz Vespers still exists. And if you were lucky enough to have seen this month’s Vespers with the sixty other attendees starring The Sabine Pothier Trio, you would agree that it still is a success (you can catch it on NUMC YouTube channel). The Vesper program has changed somewhat - Robin Blomquist passed the mantel of Producer to Lanny Hartley when he moved up North to be closer to his family; The Art show has become more prominent because of the guidance of Barbara Nathanson; the sound is splendid because of the skills of Dusty Stiles and Adrian Boularte; Joan Coston, Larry Flaharty, Teresa Priem and Wes Nathanson give their hearts to make the flyers, programs and photography fantastic; and the homily is fresh and connected thanks to Yvette Freeman’s acting skills. The only problem is - Vespers still runs on Freewill Offerings. Free Will Offering has paid the musician an honorable salary but to keep it running smoothly we need more financial help – in the form of sponsors. A sponsorship would ensure that NUMC’s Vespers would continue to reach out and connect with people introducing them to the gifts and blessings that our church has to offer. Our Candidate for the Ordained Ministry Ralph Kwon declared his candidacy for the Ordained Ministry in the United Methodist Church. Let us surround him and his family with prayers and support.

Movie Night Monday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m. in Kendall Bldg. Church and Society will screen "BlackkKlansman," based on the 2014 memoir Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth. From filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of an American hero. It's the early 1970s, and Stallworth (John David Washington) is the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets to infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The young detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organization aims to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream. The movie has a running time of 135 minutes and is rated R (for language throughout, including racial epithets, and for disturbing/violent material and some sexual references)
