Pastor Karen’s UpdateFamily Worship Services to begin in October!

“Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “Have you never read, ‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?” (Matthew 21:16, NIV) You’ve heard it said and probably said it yourself “Out of the mouths of babes” or “And a little child shall lead them” – usually in response to hearing a profound thought or insight spontaneously burst forth from a child. These moments can cause us to rethink our preconceived notions, brings us back to reality, or merely simplify our outlook. It’s true that kids can point out the obvious and teach us a thing or two, but what if we intentionally taught them to lead? What if we encouraged them to lead? And, are you ready for this? What if we encouraged them to lead adults? That is what we at NUMC plan to do! We want to introduce children to what it means to lead in worship and to have it instilled in them that they truly are important to this particular body of believers. The scriptures tell us, “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” While it is true that children often bring a smile, either to our faces or to our hearts when we see them in worship, children can bring even more, they can bring us strength. One of the most difficult things for any of us to do when we come into worship is to check our worries of everyday life at the door and give God our undivided attention. Children have a blessed way of breaking down barriers, refocusing our attention, and moving us physically and spiritually into a more relaxed and joyful state. In doing so, they can add to what we as a body bring to God in worship. Join us as the Children and Youth of NUMC lead us in worship at 9am during our special Family Worship Services this Fall and Winter.

Fall & Winter Family Worship Services:Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 9am Sunday, November 22, 2015 at 9am Thursday, December 24, 2015 (Christmas Eve) at 5:30pmSunday, January 31, 2016 at 9am

Please note: *Children and Youth will participate and remain in the full worship service at 9am on Family Worship Service Sundays. There will be no 9am Sunday School, however, the nursery will be open for infants & toddlers. *The 11am service on Family Worship Service days will be the regular 11am worship with the Band with 11am Sunday School for the children.

The Children Are Learning More Than Song! Over the last two years, my husband Will and I have looked forward to teaching Cherub or Children’s Choir on Sunday mornings. They have learned so much about music, and they have taught me so much about teaching. They are currently learning how to sight sing sheet music and how to sing in harmony. I encourage each of them to lead their friends in rhythm and singing games weekly. They have so much interest in music and they work hard to understand sometimes diffi cult concepts. We are blessed to be able to work with such talented, hardworking, and enthusiastic children. This spring, I brought my friend Zoe to rehearsal to show the children how she plays the trombone. The children loved it, and they had good questions to ask her. I realized what a wonderful experience it would be for them to see and hear different instruments and ask questions of experienced musicians, especially seeing as many of the children are at the age that they will soon be able to play instruments at their schools. Since Will and I are currently studying for our Master’s degrees in music, we know many skilled musicians who would be more than happy to come in and share their instruments with the children. Thanks to funds made available by the church, we will be bringing in a different instrumentalist every month to teach the children about their instruments. We hope to have a fl autist, an oboist, and a cellist come in the next few months.

Thank you,Joann Wyse (Children’s Choir Director)

Here’s a question I’m sure you haven’t been asked too often: Have

you ever wanted to own a cow? No? Well, there are some people in this world who really need to own

a cow, but are too poor to buy one. The children of NUMC have been

collecting money to make this dream come true for some needy family.

Can we as adults of NUMC be less generous than our children?

Wouldn’t it be nice if for every dollar the children raised we adults

matched it? Then two needy families would have their dreams come true. So far the children have collected

$344.71 and the adults have gathered $280.00 toward the goal of

$500.00.

And in the future whenever we saw a cow it would put us in a good

Mission Spotlight

Participate in the 40th Annual San Fernando Valley (SFV) CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, November 1, 2015. The fi rst CROP Hunger Walks (Christian Rural Overseas Program) were started after World War II to follow Jesus’s call to feed the hungry, quench the thirsty, and shelter the homeless children of God. The San Fernando Valley Walk includes several Christian denominations and Jewish Temples. Many members of our church have walked each year for the past 39 years! Also, this is the 3rd year NUMC is hosting the event.

There are 3 ways you can participate: Volunteer the day of the event (posting signs at the church and along the route, registration & check-in, or handing out water); Walking the 5k route; or Sponsor a walker or a group.

Set-up will start at 9:00 a.m.Walk Registration is at 12:30 p.m.Tot Walk starts at 1:10 p.m.5k Walk starts at 1:30 p.m.

75% of the proceeds are used worldwide and 25% will go to Valley Interfaith Council (VIC). To register or Sponsor a walker, see Barbara Shields between services or go online and join our team at www.crophungerwalk.org/SFVCA. To volunteer, contact Amybeth Lake at [email protected] or on the Facebook page for the CROP Hunger Walk SFV.

Imagine the Change

Your change an change the world and save lives in the process. It works the other way around too. Your change can save lives and change the world in the process. Here’s the deal. There are red boxes in the narthex. Put that change that presently resides in purses and pockets, plus any other that is laying around, into the red boxes (or anything else for that matter) and bring it to the church. It buys mosquito netting via IMAGINE NO MALARIA. Mosquito nets save lives. Pretty simple huh? So bring in that change and put it to very good purpose!

Be A Welcoming Church

Remember the first day you came to NUMC? Remember how nervous you were? Maybe even a bit frightened. Full of doubts about fitting in. Remember the loneliness? Perhaps you feared you would walk in, go unnoticed, and sit alone. Now remember the first person who smiled at you, extended their hand and introduced themselves and asked your name. Over the years, hasn’t that person claimed a special place in your heart? Maybe they became a life long friend. Today you can be that person by welcoming newcomers to church. Our motto is Open

Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors. Let’s be a welcoming church and open our hearts to our first time visitors and new members.

Where’s Your Name Badge?

The fall season is the perfect time to dust off your name badge and wear it to church. This can help to break the ice for visitors. Help newcomers feel welcome as we invite them to participate this fall!

Welcome!

Thank You!“Nearly 700 million cases of malaria have been prevented in Africa as a result of concerted efforts to tackle the disease since 2000, a study shows. The report published in the journal Nature showed that overall the number of infections fell by 50% across the continent. Bed nets were responsible for the vast majority of the decrease.”- BBC News websiteNUMC pledged to raise $10,000 toward the Imagine No Malaria campaign of the Cali-fornia-Pacific Annual Conference. Through September 2015 NUMC raised over $13,000. The participation has been broad - including 2014 Vacation Bible School, youth bake sale, LA Marathon (Wayne Aller), Gift To The World, Change in the World, direct donations and UMW. Thank you all for your generosity.

Turf Removal Update from the Board of Trustees

We are continuing our work on turf replacement! Some parts of the project seem to be moving more slowly than others, so let me give you brief recap of where we are in the process.

All of the brown grass has been removed and most of the soil has been readied for the next phase. The plan was to plant the circle area by the Peace Pole, but when we talked with the nursery and discovered how tiny the plants in the flats were at that time and how hot it was outside, we realized we needed to wait. Our solution- put a deposit on the 400 flats of plants and let them stay at the nursery to grow bigger so they are ready to be transplanted to NUMC.

Two big projects needed to be completed before Weekday Preschool came back into session in early September- tree removal and concrete demo, forming and pouring. We were very successful, not only was the work complete when the preschool kids came back, but when it rained heavily we did not have the flooding that we usually experience.

The dry creek beds have been excavated and you may have noticed the arrival of large rocks in the Pine Grove. Only a couple of the boulders will be going in the Pine Grove the rest of them will be going along Reseda Blvd and Superior Street in our new dry creek beds. The Trustees would like to thank Matthew Withers and KC Knox for their work on getting rock donated from Sierra Canyon High School. It will still cost to have the rock relocated to our campus be they are giving it to us at no cost. Thank you Sierra Canyon HS! We continue to accept donations to the Jim Sanchez Memorial that will be going towards this project.

We continue to pray that the cooler temperatures will arrive in time for the plants to go in. We know that some of you are looking forward to helping with the planting. After the creek beds are installed, we will be installing the irrigation, and then the planting! Look for work days to be scheduled in late October and early November.

Thank you for your patience as we continue with the construction. We are looking forward to seeing the finished project as not only a water saver, and good stewardship, but as something that will make our campus even more beautiful.

Thank you, Tandy Wilson, Chair of Trustees

Help! I’m drowning in paper.

The Wall Street Journal suggests these guidelines for storing files:

Keep important documents in a safe deposit box:• Birth and marriage certificates• All insurance policies and agents• Stock and bond certificates• Passports• Deeds and other records of ownership• Photos• Receipts and/or written inventory of your home’s contents• A good record of home improvements (new roof, landscaping or remodeling)• Place in long-term storage• Any records of non-deductible IRA contributions• Death certificates after estate is settled• Military records for possible veteran’s benefits• Tax returns and supporting documents (last six years)• Information on possible pensions from former employers

Getting rid of irrelevant documents is also helpful to your survivors if anything happens to you, and it makes it easier for you to find documents when needed for insurance tax purposes.

Discard:• Most non tax related checks more than one year old• Expired insurance policies with no possibility of claims• Records from cars and boars you no longer own• All but the most recent cumulative pay stub for this year• Clearly expired product warranties

Lay Ministries

Have you thought about how much a simple act can mean – like sending a card? Every Sunday we have a list of those in our congregation who have lost a loved one, are experiencing health issues, or are homebound. Just sending them a card or giving them a call can let them know that their NUMC family cares about them.

We had planned to visit the Federal Reserve Bank in November. Unfortunately, they are booked through the rest of the year. We are working on planning that event for January. Stay tuned for more information.

John Turner

John Turner was born one hundred years ago in Joshua, Texas on October 14, 1915. He graduated from the University of Texas, receiving a degree in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering in 1941. Summers found him as a “Gear Jammer”, driving a big red bus at Glacier National Park. There he met his future wife, Mary, in 1941 and they married on July 18, 1942 . He is proud of their 62 years of marriage. They had five children and now he has 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

During the war, John worked at Douglas Aircraft in El Segundo. When offered a job at Weber Aircraft, John had a big decision to make and Mary stood behind him. After all, Weber was a start-up company with only 20 employees. John felt it was not a job but a challenge and he rose to it. Starting with 10 engineers under him, he eventually had 250 working under him as Vice President of Engineering.

One of John’s major projects was developing a Zero Zero Ejection Seat for pilots (the seat could eject at zero altitude and zero speed), known as Project 90. These seats were eventually installed in all military planes and the same principle applies today.

John traveled extensively around the world on business and also with Mary through the United States. A man of strong faith, he transferred to Northridge UMC from Granada Hills UMC and found it most convenient as his wife worshipped across the street at the Catholic Church. John is an avid reader, just finishing “The Wright Brothers” by David McCullough. Please join John for a celebration of his 100th birthday at 10 AM on October 18 in the Fellowship Hall.

The Connection

Looking Ahead to November

Our Young Adults Are Deconstructing Doubt!

We wish our young adults well on their trip to Lazy W Ranch this month for the Young Adult Fall Retreat on October 9th - 11th. This retreat brings young adults from around the conference together for a weekend of spiritual growth and fellowship that has proven transformational for many. We can’t wait to hear about their experiences!
