for your time to give.

The Padcal Mine is located in the province of Benguet in the Philippines and it is the longest running mine in the Philippines, having been in operation since 1958. The community around the mine depends on the mine for its livelihood. Unfortunately, the mine is set to close in 2022. This poses a huge problem for the community as the jobs and livelihoods in existence are not incredibly diverse. They all depend on, or relate to the mine. The communities are impoverished as it is, even with their main source of income still open. When the mine closes, it will leave the community without ways to make a living. There is no substantial government support in the region due to the remoteness of its location. Thus, any solutions, community improvement, or general help and assistance must be home-grown or must come from charitable organizations. The goal of the community and of any charitable organization aiming to help, is the diversification of livelihoods available to the community. One of the biggest opportunities to promote this diversification is in the local school system. The schools can promote diverse trades and livelihoods, ones that are not dependent on the mine. However, the schools, like the communities, have no governmental support and thus lack essential supplies such as books. Therefore, as a member of NUMC and a Life Scout of Troop 911, I would like to request my fellow church members to please assist me in my Eagle Project. I am collecting books to send to Benguet and funds to pay for the shipping. We need books from a preschool level to a high school one, preferably educational, but we will take anything the congregation can give. We are aiming for around 2000 books. We also need around $500 to cover shipping costs. There will be a bucket in the church office and in the sanctuary for books, and a table in the Fellowship Hall for monetary donations and additional information. Anything that is donated is a huge help. Thank You. – Matthew Canlas

Children & Family

Hello all,

I am very excited to announce some fun updates to Sunday School! We will be heading in a new direction with our curriculum and implementing a Children's Church Program. These lessons will continue to focus our One Room Sunday School using bible stories, memory verses, songs, crafts, themed snacks, puppet shows, and more!

One great thing about this new curriculum is the "Park Patrol" program. This is a program for 5th and 6th graders who will be able to be special leaders during Sunday School. They will receive special training and get to assist the younger kids in activities, act out the puppet shows, lead songs, and much more! This fun program will have its initiation and training time in the Fall.

Finally, we will be adding the Sunday School Store to our program. The store will be a collection of fun prizes. Children will earn tokens to use in the store and can save up to get different items. Tokens will be awarded for timely respectful behavior, being a helper to another friend, and sharing God's love and teachings with others in class.

I am very excited for these new additions to our program. I have had such a wonderful time learning, praying, and experiencing the endless love of God with your children! I look forward to many more fun experiences. – Chelsea Obermeier, Children’s Lead Sunday School Teacher and Music Leader

In May 2017 over the memorial day weekend, I traveled to the Philippines for a short visit to my hometown. Within a span of two weeks I was able to: attend the 81st founding anniversary celebration of Lambakin UMC; the dedication of a new UMC church building in San Antonio, Nueva

Ecija; met with Edna, a former NUMC scholar whom we sponsored with scholarships for two years so she can attend Harris Memorial College, a United Methodist college which trains deaconesses and Christian education teachers. She got her Bachelor’s degree in Christian Education and is now the deaconess and Children Ministries director at Gen. Tinio UMC. I attended the first day of the annual conference of the district to hear the new Bishop of the Manila Episcopal Area preside. He is none other than

Bishop Ciriaco Francisco who was re-elected as Bishop last November 2016 and was given this new area of jurisdiction. We were honored to have him as our

guest speaker at NUMC in May 2016 after he attended the General Conference in Portland, Oregon. I was also invited to attend a Sunday afternoon service at a mission church in Pinanggaan, a nearby village whose congregation has been worshipping at a makeshift structure at the front yard of a member. They told me that the District had purchased a lot for them to build the church of their vision. One of our NUMC members have expressed a wish to donate children’s Bibles for distribution. I found one in Tagalog, - book-bound at a cost of $10 each. I purchased 30 which was delivered a few days after I left and are now ready for distribution. I also visited SHARE, the school

for hearing and speech-impaired children at Wesleyan University- Philippines where we have been providing scholarships to two students for the last 5 years – Valerie Ann Santiago and Xyran Castillo. I attended the recognition program where Valerie received a certificate for academic excellence and Xyran his certificate of completion of elementary education. – Eleanor Serrano

Primetimers - Visit the USS Iowa - Friday, August 18

USS Iowa (BB-61) was the lead ship of the last class of U.S. Navy battleships. The battleship was originally commissioned in 1943 and served during World War II, the Korean War, and through the Cold War. Iowa earned 11 battle stars during her career and hosted three U.S. Presidents, ultimately earning the nicknames Battleship of Presidents and Big Stick. Iowa was awarded to the Pacific Battleship Center on September 6, 2011 for display at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, California – home to the United States Battle Fleet from 1919 to 1940.

Meet the bus near the YAC at 11:00 AM. A special History Tour will be provided on the main deck for those unable to climb the seven flights of stairs - but stairs are available to those who can. Cost is $48 (includes bus $22, tour admission $13.50 and $13 for box lunch).

Sign up in the office or in Fellowship Hall.

Your Primetimers Team apologizes for the increase in cost of events. Our cost has increased dramatically for the bus.

Church and Society Movie Night On Monday, August 14, 2017, at 7 PM in the Kendall Building, Church and Society will screen the movie "Loving," which tells the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, a couple whose arrest for interracial marriage in 1960s Virginia began a legal battle that would end with the Supreme Court's historic 1967 decision. This moving film shows that the power of love can prevail. This movie won the Producers Guild of America Award - Stanly Kramer Award and the Satellite Award for Best Actress Motion Picture. The movie also won several festival and film critics awards. This 2016 film, written and directed by Jeff Nichols, stars Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton. It is rated PG-13 and runs 2 hours and 3 minutes. The movies we show at church are always free and open to the public; so invite your friends!

Eat Out Monday Monday, August 14, 2017 (3 PM – 10 PM) at the Habit, 9243 Winnetka Ave, Chatsworth.

Caregivers/Grief Support Group The First Sunday of Each Month at 11:15 AM in the Library One of the gifts we offer to our congregation is a support group for caregivers and those who are grieving. The group meets once a month on the first Sunday at 11:15 AM in the library. As one journeys down the path of grief you may feel you’re wandering in a dense fog – uncertain of what lies ahead of which way to turn. You may wonder if you’ll ever see the sun again. Then all at once the fog lifts and you are on the road to healing. The sharing of the experience with others in a similar, but not the same, situation helps each person to work through this difficult time. All are welcome and Sally Taylor is available for questions.

NUMC’s UMCOR Mission Team Needs Your Help The team needs fabric, scissors, needles, thread and buttons for Sewing Relief Kits. Please bring these items to the church office or we have engaged a Happy Shopper who will accept your donations and fulfill our needs. Contact Nancy Easterly with your monetary donations.

We had a SUPER time at Hero Central Family VBS! We were given the mission to discover how our

strength comes from God and how to use our God-given strengths to be God’s heroes in the world.

We’ve learned that God’s people are heroes when they use their power to “Do good! Seek peace

and go after it!” Psalm 34:14b

On behalf of the 18 families represented by 36 adults and 41 kids, we thank you all for supporting us at Hero Central Family VBS. We especially thank all the volunteers who made our time together a great adventure! On behalf of NUMC, we thank all the families who stepped out on faith and tried something new-you really are Superheroes! (Photos courtesy of Oscar Canlas)
