I trust you all had an enjoyable holiday with opportunities to spend some special time together. This term is set to be a busy term with a large number of extra-curricular activities taking place. Some of these activities include; the Dance group performing at the Far North Coast Dance Festival, students participating in the school Athletics Carnival, Peer Support, several sport gala days, performing Arts week and many other activities. I am very proud to be a member of a school that offers such a large number of extra- curricular opportunities for our students to be involved in. I look forward to visiting classrooms throughout the term to watch the wonderful learning opportunities we offer. ANZAC Day 2018 We extend a big thank you to all the families who were able to join us for this year’s ANZAC Day march and service. Murwillumbah had a contingent of approximately 120 students who were supported by several staff members and parents. Our students were keen to participate and were appropriately respectful throughout the service. We would like to acknowledge our school captains for the great job they did leading our school and laying the wreath. NAPLAN Students in Years 3 and 5 will be sitting the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) in Week 3. Parents should contact the school if their child is not attending school on an exam day. The exam schedule is: 15 May Language Conventions and Writing test 16 May Reading test 17 May Numeracy test It is anticipated that schools will start receiving results to send home to parents from 14 August. School Cross Country Carnival Last Friday, the weather was beautiful and the students participated in the school cross country carnival. all the students who will be moving on to the district carnival the best of luck. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTSWe have had some work done during the holidays which is now complete. New carpet has been laid in the Library, a new security fence around our kindergarten playground, a couple of classrooms repainted and the infants boys toilet has some new tiles. Kindergarten 2019 We are now starting to coordinate enrolment applications for students wishing to start Kindergarten in 2019. Do you know a friend or family member that has a child ready for school next year? If yes, please ask them to contact the school office to arrange for an enrolment pack.Attendance Regular attendance at school is essential for students to achieve quality life outcomes. Schools, in partnership with parents, are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students. Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student’s record. Absences may be explained verbally (in person or over the phone) or by providing a note justifying the absence. These notes must be signed by the parent or carer. Unexplained absences are followed up by the Home School Liaison Officer, who will make contact with parents through home visits in regards to their child’s unexplained absence. that seem to be prolific in the colder months. It is particularly important to stress hygiene for this reason. Effective hand hygiene is the single most important strategy. Below is a reminder about the steps of hand washing. I have also included a YouTube video demonstration to support conversations at home around hand hygiene

Positive Behaviour for LearningAs you are aware the school is undertaking the implementation of the Positive Behaviour for Learning Program. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a comprehensive, integrated whole school approach to student wellbeing and behaviour. PBL is a process that supports school leadership teams to create positive learning environments that enable student learning and wellbeing. The PBL process includes the creation of behavioural expectations that schools implement to ensure a consistency of practice and behavioural language. This allows students to know what behaviours are expected of them before, during or after school. The focus for week 3 and 4 is based on the premise of “Being respectful and responsible at our 11:20 am assembly”. This includes:* I will listen to and follow all teacher directions.* I will clap appropriately* I will be quiet.* I will leave the playground promptly.* I will walk to and from assembly.* I will sit still in class lines* I will be an active listener * I will keep my hands and feet to myself. Teachers shall be introducing and reinforcing these behavioural expectations with students in the classroom daily. Parents can assist by talking with their children about what the behavioural expectation is for the fortnight and then revisit what role your child/children play in assuring a successful outcome.

Our school is performing at the Far North Coast Dance Festival which is being held on Wednesday the 13th June, at the Home of the Arts (formerly the Gold Coast Arts Centre).Tickets for this event go on sale this Friday the 11th May and are available from the venue. Please either call HOTA on 07 5588 4000 or buy tickets from their website. Students performing in the show will not need a ticket as they will be backstage. We hope you will support our dancers by attending this exciting event.

As part of PD/H/PE, all K-6 students will focus on Road Safety in their classrooms for the next 2 weeks. The teaching and learning focus is on pedestrian safety. All students will then be able to display Road Safety skills by participating in Walk to School Safety Day on Friday 18th May. This campaign is in its 19th year and is an annual event when all primary school children and their parents are encouraged to walk regularly and safely to school.Australian children are becoming less active. One substantial contributor is the decline in walking and/or taking public transport to school. Children who are regularly physically active are healthier, perform better academically and less likely to be obese or overweight. Walking regularly is the best exercise you can build it in to your daily routine. On Friday 18th May, we encourage you to walk to school with children. If you live too far away, you can drive and park your car about 1km away and walk with your children. During the day, each stage will practice safe pedestrian crossing and road safety skills by walking down to Knox Park. Each student will receive a Walking Safely Passport which they can get stamps for displaying road safety and walking safely.

Walk Safely To School Day

During the first week of the holidays, Maisy, Ruby and Phoenix of 5/6C attended State Recorder Camp at Stanwell Tops south of Sydney. During the camp they received expert recorder tuition from talented and experienced recorder teachers and they also enjoyed the opportunity to play recorder all day every day with 90 other NSW Public School Students from years 5-12 in a variety of recorder ensembles. They were most excited that Miss Curby surprised them by attending the camp concert at Stanwell Tops. Through audition and performance, they were all very honoured to be selected into the NSW Public Schools State Recorder Ensemble that will perform in 4 concerts at the Sydney Opera House in May and June. Further to this, Maisy, Ruby and Phoenix were all selected into the Bach Recorder Ensemble which will perform at the Sydney Opera House in June. Congratulations to Maisy, Ruby and Phoenix!
