THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE

1. To show an action that has happened in the past at a definite time.

Example: He spoke to me yesterday.

The house burnt down last year.

I bought this carpet when I was in India.

2. Most past tense verbs end in – ed. They are regular verbs.

Example: play - played

jump - jumped

walk - walked

3. Irregular verbs do not end in – ed.

a)They change in their vowel sounds.

Examples: swim - swamrun - ran

sing - sang

b)Change in their spelling.

Examples: go - went

leave - left

eat - ate

4. Some verbs do not change when used in the past tense.



Examples: hit - hit

beat - beat

cut - cut

put - put

shut - shut

5. Some words are used to refer to the past.

Examples: yesterday last night last Monday last

weeklast year last month an hour ago

THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

To describe two actions which were happening at the same time in the

past.

Examples: We were cooking when she dropped in.

The boys were arguing as he walked in.

He was jogging when the dog attacked him.

The police was taking down the details when I arrived.
