KOUGA Municipality is surgingahead with its programme to re-duce sewe-rage spills at JeffreysBay, with five more pump sta-tions set to be upgraded over the

next year.

A tender notice for the upgrades was ad-vertised earlier this month. A compulsoryclarification meeting for prospective con-tractors will take place on Monday, with theclosing date for the tenders set at August 7,2015.

In terms of the tender document the targetstations are 4A, in Koraal Street near the Jef-freys Bay High School, and 4B, on the out-skirts of town.Also on the list are the Sandka-steel pump station at Diaz Road, the Cormo-rant pump station near the Marina Marti-nique and the Melkhout pump station inKabeljous.Kouga Executive Mayor Daphne Kettledas

said the upgrades were necessary because ofthe expansion of the population and the ongo-ing risk of loadshedding.“We promised in the State of theMunicipa-

lity Address that we would put measures in

place to reduce the risk of sewerage spillslinked to interruptions in the electrical sup-ply. The upgrades will, therefore, includethe installation of standby generators so asto ensure that these stations continue oper-ating even when there is loadshedding orother breaks in the electrical supply,” shesaid.The upgrades will also include the fencing

of the pump station sites at Koraal Street, 4Band Cormorant.Additional pumps will be installed at the

Koraal Street and 4B pump stations so as toincrease the capacity of the stations.“These twopumpstations are critical to the

Jeffreys Bay sewerage system. They are twoof the largest pump stations, serving between70% and 80% of the town’s population, andpumpbulk sewerage towards thewastewatertreatment works,” the Mayor said.“The pump stations can no longer accom-

modate the large inflow experienced, espe-cially during the holiday season. An additio-nal pump will, therefore, be installed at Ko-raal Street while two more pumps will beinstalled at 4B.”Kouga Municipality has been improving

the sewerage system of Jeffreys Bay syste-matically over the past few years.The Jeffreys Bay Waste Water Treatment

Works was officially unveiled last year afterit was upgraded at a cost of more than R40-million. It is widely recognised as one of themost advanced waste water treatment worksin the country.The municipality further upgraded four

pump stations at a cost of R17,5-million in the2014/2015 financial year. The stations wereApiesdraai on the Aston Bay Road, La Merat the main beachfront, and two smaller sta-tions at Duine Road, Pellsrus.

SOME 200 residents braved the chilly weahter to at-tend the meeting held by Athol Trollip, the leader ofthe DA in the Eastern Cape, in Jeffrey Bay on July13.At the meeting, Trollip stressed the importance of

the DA pulling out all the stops to win the Kouga in2016.“We cannot have a split vote in 2016,” said Trollip.

“With 52% of voters casting their ballot for the DA inlast year’s national election, Kouga residents provedthat they want the DA to govern the Kouga.”According to Trollip, the agricultural and tourism

industries need to be nurtured to ensure sustainablejob creation in the area.

TWO armed robbers were arrested shortly after ac-costing two men on the R331 between Hankey and Hu-mansdorp at approximately 23:00 last Wednesday.The suspects, aged 23 and 33, tied upwith cable wire

two men who stopped on the roadside for refresh-ments, before stealing their valuables and fleeing ina blue Toyota Yaris.The swift action from police members from Hu-

mansdorp and Thornhill led to the arrest of the twosuspects on the N2 near Thornhill and the recoveryof the stolen items. The K9 dog unit, furthermore re-covered two firearms hidden between the engine andthe dashboard of the vehicle.The men appeared in the Hanky Magistrate’s Court

OPENwater swimmers are gearing up forthe Infood Blu ColdWater Classic at Mari-na Martinique this Saturday.

With the strongwinds and coldweather,the water temperature has dropped to 13degrees Celsius, which is exactly what theSouthAfrican extreme swimmerswant, ascold water is defined as being sub 15 de-grees in the swimming fraternity.South Africa’s only triple crown swim-

mers Roger Finch has entered the 7.5kmevent and will be attempting to completethe Cold Water Classic wearing nothingbut a speedo type costume, goggles and aswim cap.The triple crown comprises of the En-

glish Channel, the Catalina Channel andaround Manhattan Island - all swims areabout 34km in distance.Finch regularly does Robben island

crossings in preparation for his big swimsand is no stranger to cold water.He has also done training swims in Ma-

rina Martinique and took part in the 12hours in 12 miles swim in Jeffreys Bay inMarch.Last year’s winner Rebecca Newman

will be back to defend her Infood Blu Cold
