A tender notice for the upgrades was ad- vertised earlier this month. A compulsory clarification meeting for prospective con- tractors will take place on Monday, with the closing date for the tenders set at August 7, 2015. In terms of the tender document the target stations are 4A, in Koraal Street near the Jef- freys Bay High School, and 4B, on the out- skirts of town. Also on the list are the Sandka- steel pump station at Diaz Road, the Cormo- rant pump station near the Marina Marti- nique and the Melkhout pump station in Kabeljous. Kouga Executive Mayor Daphne Kettledas said the upgrades were necessary because of the expansion of the population and the ongo- ing risk of loadshedding. “We promised in the State of the Municipa- lity Address that we would put measures in place to reduce the risk of sewerage spills linked to interruptions in the electrical sup- ply. The upgrades will, therefore, include the installation of standby generators so as to ensure that these stations continue oper- ating even when there is loadshedding or other breaks in the electrical supply,” she said. The upgrades will also include the fencing of the pump station sites at Koraal Street, 4B and Cormorant. Additional pumps will be installed at the Koraal Street and 4B pump stations so as to increase the capacity of the stations. “These two pump stations are critical to the Jeffreys Bay sewerage system. They are two of the largest pump stations, serving between 70% and 80% of the town’s population, and pump bulk sewerage towards the waste water treatment works,” the Mayor said. “The pump stations can no longer accom- modate the large inflow experienced, espe- cially during the holiday season. An additio- nal pump will, therefore, be installed at Ko- raal Street while two more pumps will be installed at 4B.” Kouga Municipality has been improving the sewerage system of Jeffreys Bay syste- matically over the past few years. The Jeffreys Bay Waste Water Treatment Works was officially unveiled last year after it was upgraded at a cost of more than R40- million. It is widely recognised as one of the most advanced waste water treatment works in the country. The municipality further upgraded four pump stations at a cost of R17,5-million in the 2014/2015 financial year. The stations were Apiesdraai on the Aston Bay Road, La Mer at the main beachfront, and two smaller sta- tions at Duine Road, Pellsrus. More sewer upgrades for Jeffreys Bay “The pump stations can no longer accommodate the large inflow experienced, especially during the holiday season. SOME 200 residents braved the chilly weahter to at-tend the meeting held by Athol Trollip, the leader ofthe DA in the Eastern Cape, in Jeffrey Bay on July13.At the meeting, Trollip stressed the importance of

the DA pulling out all the stops to win the Kouga in2016.“We cannot have a split vote in 2016,” said Trollip.

“With 52% of voters casting their ballot for the DA inlast year’s national election, Kouga residents provedthat they want the DA to govern the Kouga.”According to Trollip, the agricultural and tourism

industries need to be nurtured to ensure sustainablejob creation in the area.

Addressing problems facing residents, Trollipsaid that basicmunicipal services like refuse collec-tion can be addressed successfully so that residentsdon’t have to live with rubbish littering theirstreets.“It will take hardwork and commitment to solve the

problems facing Jeffreys Bay, but I am confident thatthe DA has a strong team in Kouga and will be up tothe task come 2016,” said Trollip.“The DA will be visiting residents and doing door

to door campaigns to ensure everyone is registeredand able to vote in the 2016 local government election. All I ask is that peoplemust not split the vote andhandthe municipality to the ANC.”
