LOCAL businesses now have the opportunity to rendertheir services to the Kouga Municipality.

According to Neels Visser from the Kouga Business Fo-rum (KBF), the municipality and other government de-partments mainly make use of service providers from out-side the Kouga area, resulting in approximately R8 millionleaving the municipal boundaries on a monthly basis.

“To benefit both local business and the municipality, and to cut down on cost, it was agreed upon to encouragelocal businesses to register on the municipality’s data-base in order for them to be eligible to render services

to the municipality.”Municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele, says: “It has

always been the municipality’s position to support localbusinesses in order to help stimulate and boost economicgrowth in our area. It is also cost-saving to get local busi-nesses rendering the service as there would be no or lessadded costs such as transport.

“We will, however, not be in a position to do this if theentities are not registered with us.”

Registration forms are available at the Kouga Munici-pality Supply Chain Management Office, St Croix Street,Jeffreys Bay. Alternatively, contact the municipal LocalEconomic Development section at 042 200 2219 or theirSupply Chain section at 042 200 2165.

THE Kouga Municipality has declared war on sewage.

Work on the long overdue upgrading of the ApiesdraaiSewerage Pump Station on the road to Aston Bay is infull swing - this follows days before the official launchof the new Waste Water Treatment Works in Jeffreys Bay.

Upgrading of the Apiesdraai Pump Station - whichservices Ocean View, Aston Bay and the Marina Marti-nique - kicked off in July and will cost an estimated R15million.

Construction is set to take seven months.According to Kouga municipal spokesperson, Laura-

Leigh Randall, the upgrade is necessary to cope with the

increase in flow due to recent and future housing deve-lopments.

“The upgrade will almost double the capacity of thepump station and address the sewerage spills that havebeen a concern to residents. The upgrade will further ca-ter for government housing developments in the OceanView area,” says Randall.

“At least 20 job opportunities must be created on sitefor the duration of the contract period.”

According to Randall, other sewerage projects current-ly under way are the upgrade of the waste water treat-ment works at Kruisfontein, Weston, Hankey and Paten-sie.

“These treatment works are also being upgraded to ca-ter for housing developments.”

GLOBAL Junction Cafe situated atFountains Mall in Jeffreys Bay, isall about family and good relation-ships.

This well-known and much-loved coffeeshop not only boasts some of the best coffeein town, but now also has a state of the artplay area for children.

Global Junction Cafe is owned and run by2 families - the Deetlefs and the Labus-chagnes.

“For us at Global Junction, it is all aboutrelationships,” says Marius Deetlefs.

“As parents we realised that in JeffreysBay, and especially in Fountains Mall, thereare limited options available for families toenjoy a nice meal while their kids are playingin a safe environment.

“Since we’re all parents ourselves, we de-signed our new play area, called Global Ad-ventureland, with other parents in mind.

Safety was paramount in our planning. Theplay area is designed so that parents can seetheir children playing.”

Jodi Deetlefs says: “Adventureland is notjust a playground. We want it to teach kidsabout other kids and their different cul-tures around the world. The playful art-work on the walls, as well as the colouring-in pictures all have at heart to educate chil-dren. Do not forget about the fun slide andjungle gym.

“All the artwork on the walls, depicting dif-ferent continents and world landmarks, aremade from 100% recycled materials.”

Apart from the new play area, a new menusporting healthy options has been added justfor kids. Instead of the ordinary side of chipswith their meals, kids can enjoy apple slices, yoghurt or cucumber and tomato slices ashealthy alternatives. Chips will of course alsobe available.

“And of course we are still all about goodfood, good coffee and good prices,” says Fran-cois.

LOADSHEDDING:WHATBUSINESSOWNERSHAVETOSAY

Prepare formajorpower shock

Bassil Rammeas (Aegean Mini Market): “Theregular power cuts are unacceptable as theycause countless problems for all businesses. We rely on a constant and steady powersupply in order to be fully functional andprovide the best possible customer service.”

George Sarmias (The Greek Restaurant andWine Bar): “Although we are a ‘green’restaurant, using wood to prepare meals, thefridge is a huge problem. We deal withdelicate food such as ice cream, and a fewhours without electricity can ruin our food resulting in our throwing money in the water.”

Leasha Burrows (Bali @ Home): “Wheneverthere are power cuts we have to close earlyor not open the shop at all. We lose moneyand our alarm system does not work puttingour shop in danger.”

Herman Van Schalkwykl (Le Grotto Bar andGrill): “Load shedding result in our having toclose our doors to the public. We not onlylose money, but some of our food also go towaste due to the fridges not working.”

SINOVUYO MAKHENKANE

ESKOM is so far behind with maintenancework that the escalating instability of itspower plants poses a serious threat to thecountry.

The pace of maintenance work will in-crease this summer and lead to more loadshedding, Eskom said last week, but unoffi-

cial high-level sources warn that the dangerof a total collapse of the power plants are onthe increase. The availability of the power plants so far

this year was 75% due to unintended errors.Eskom hopes to increase this percentage to77% for the rest of the year.According toKougamunicipal spokesper-

son, Laura-Leigh Randall, regular loadshedding could have a negative impact on

the economy as businesses will suffer down-time if the power is shut down during theiroperating hours. “The extent of the impactwould depend on what contingency meas-ures businesses can put in place. Kougabusinesses are very innovative and, togeth-er with communities and the municipality, can minimise the impact,” says Randall.“Should the shutdown be during office

hours, the municipality’s switchboard

won’t work and staff can’t use their comput-ers, which will delay assisting people with,eg, account queries. The load shedding isusually for a two-hour period and the mu-nicipality does have stand-by generatorswhere required, so we do not expect it tohave an impact on other basic services.”SinovuyoMakhenkaneasked local busi-

ness owners and managers in Jeffreys Bayhow load shedding will affect them.

Skakel Dorette by 082 774 4971 of042 288 0748 vir meer inligting. Inskrywingssluit voor die fees.

S Musiek.

Vir meer inligting, bel Danie Strydom by042 288 0404 of besoek www.kareedouw-wors.co.za.

TIME is running out to nominate senior citi-zens who make a difference in their communi-ty, for the prestige BLG Logistics Senior Citi-zen of the Year Awards.

Nominations close on August 27. Entryforms are available for download online atwww.kougaexpress.co.za.

The Award is predominately run by theGolden Oldies Fund raising club and is a pres-tigious event; one which recognises the time

and effort volunteered by senior citizens, mak-ing a positive contribution to the community.

It is a programme rewarding senior citizensthrough a nomination programme, which isassessed by a local selection committee andjudging panel.

The award aims to promote the concept ofactive ageing which is all about creating andmaintaining a great quality life for individu-als and groups as they age.

“For someone who excelled in a sport intheir heyday, becoming a mentor or coach tothe younger generation can be very reward-

ing. Today so many youngsters lead sedentary, unhealthy lifestyles. Seeing an active seniorcitizen leading the way could inspire childrenand their parents to get active themselves,”said accountant at BLG Logistics South AfricaJuanita Krauspe.

Nominees must be 70 years or older and stillbe active in their respective communities andactivities. “These are senior citizens whomake a difference in the lives of others andwho go above and beyond in all spheres intheir communities,” said Kraupse.

Persons who are turning 100 years or older

will also be honoured. “This is a milestone thatthe organizers feel deserves recognition,” saidKrauspe.

The three main objectives of Senior Citizenof the year are:. To honour older persons for the active rolethey still play in their communities,. to educate younger people to make provi-sion for and to be active after their retirement,. and to bridge the gap between the youth andsenior citizens.

For more information contact Jacqui Wil-son 083 652 2844.
