“Daar is beslis ’n skerp toename inhuisbrake.

Huis-ware, juweliersware, selfone, kontanten ’n skootrekenaar is gesteel.

Barendina is so deel vandie atmosfeer hier op Lombardini. Sy wordgereeld met blomme versier vir troufoto’sen het al selfs Kersversierings aangehad.”

Barendina is ’n replika van die eersterenoster, ook ’n koei, wat op Lombardinigevestig is. Na dié koei se dood is ’n afgiet-sel van haar lyf gemaak en daaruit isBarendina in veselglas gebore.

ESTI STEWART

FOUR juvenile ragged-tooth sharkshave been released back into the oceanat St Francis Bay after they were held incaptivity for several years.

They will now form part of a researchproject aimed at creating South Africa’soceans as a safe haven for ragged-toothsharks, as well as to learn more about thehabits of these sharks.

Equipped with a Vemco transmitter tagto the value of R10 000 each, these four rag-ged-tooth sharks were reintroduced intothe ocean on June 17 at Granny’s Pool inSt Francis Bay after spending a few yearsat the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town.

Dr Malcolm Smale, a shark scientist fromthe Port Elizabeth Museum who is doing anacoustic telemetry research project on rag-ged-tooth sharks, surgically inserted thetags into the sharks in Cape Town just beforethey were relocated to the Eastern Cape.

The whole releasing process was docu-mented by Rob and Sam Bester from Gyp-SEA Marine Eco Tours. They also kept aclose eye on the ocean for a few hours after-wards.

“Normally the releases take place at Buf-fels Bay, close to Plettenberg Bay, but dueto current water temperatures, it was deci-ded to release them in St Francis Bay. Theywill now find other ragged-tooth sharks ofa similar age in the vicinity,” said Sam.

Unfortunately, only two days later one ofthe sharks were found dead on the nearbyrocks. “We were initially concerned it mayhave been caught due to how high up therocks it had washed, but it seems it was justan unfortunate incident of the shark eitherexperiencing stress due to the relocation or

merely got into trouble on high tide withsuch big swell,” said Sam.

According to Sam, ragged-tooth sharkscan only eat what they can bite and swallowat the same time and are therefore harmlessto humans.

The ragged-tooth sharks in the TwoOceans Aquarium were collected on rodand line in a little bay aptly named “LittleRaggie Bay” in a private resort calledMgwalana, approximately 60km south ofEast London. Roy Martin, the official ‘’tag-ger’’ for Bayworld in Port Elizabeth, assis-ted the staff in collecting these sharks.

Little Raggie Bay is a very shallow bayand is one of a number of similar-sized bayson this part of the coast, which young rag-ged-tooth sharks use as “nursery areas”.

The juvenile ragged-tooth sharks act asambassadors for their species and are onlydisplayed for a short period of time at theaquarium before they are returned to thewild..Ragged-tooth sharks are found on thesouthern and eastern coasts of South Afri-ca. In November/December they congre-gate to mate on reefs in northern EasternCape and southern KwaZulu-Natal waters. The pregnant females then travel north asfar as southern Mozambique to gestate inwarmer waters. After a gestation period of9 to 12 months, they return to the EasternCape (south of the Kei River) to give birth.

Using satellite and ultrasonic tags, scien-tists have been able to gain more detailedinformation about the movement of ragged-tooth sharks up and down the South Afri-can coast.

Ragged-tooth sharks are threatenedaround the world, because they are slow toreach sexual maturity, give birth to fewyoung and, because of their inshore habits, they are highly vulnerable to over-fishing.

AFTER more than 700 kilo-metres and 250 hours ofbriskwalking, the time for

second-guessing is over. The re-search has been done, the kilo-metres have been walked, thenecessary medication has beentaken and the equipment hasbeen gathered.

Lenro Stoltz, the owner of a farmjust outside Humansdorp, is in the fi-nal days of his preparation to ascendthe highest mountain in Africa andthe highest free-standing mountainin the world, towering 5 895m abovethe surrounding plains - all in aid ofcharity.

Stoltz and his twin brother, Leon, will climb Mount Kilimanjaro inTanzania to help raise funds for theBay FM Foundation to enabled them

to accomplish more life changing ex-periences in the lives of persons inthe Bay FM broadcast area.

The Foundation strives to identi-fy and support projects where a mo-dest strategic investment has the po-tential for significant impact in theareas of education, primary healthcare and unemployment within thereception area of Bay FM.

During the climb the Bay FMDJ’s and studio in Nelson MandelaBay will be in regular contact withthe two brothers as they take on themountain and aim to raise funds.

The Stoltz-brothers will leave forTanzania on July 11.

The team will hike along the se-ven-day Machame route - alsoknown as the “whiskey route” - as-cending through Machame Camp,Shira, Barranco, Karanga, theBarafu Hut, and finally summitingon Uhuru peak at 19,341 feet, or 5895meters, above sea level.

To reach the snow-capped MountKilimanjaro, known as the “roof ofAfrica”, they will walk close to 100kilometres throughout the week, passing through five different eco-systems, from rain forest to arctictundra, and temperatures rangingfrom 30°C to -15°C.

“Climbing Kilimanjaro is not on-ly a a life long dream, but also a goalthat I have set for myself. Now, afterhard work and months of training, standing triumphantly on the high-est free-standing mountain in theworld, is well within my reach,”said Stoltz.

In preparation of this challeng-ing climb, Stoltz has embarked ona training programme which seeshim walking 10km before and afterwork, five to six days a week.

According to him, the biggestchallenges will be the cold weather- especially in winter time, but hisall forms part of his goal - as well

as the acute mountain sickness.“Although physically, mentally

and spiritually challenging, climb-ing Kilimanjaro is a once in a life-time experience. One day, yearsfrom now, I will look back andproudly share tales of excitement, achievement and empowerment, aswell as moments of exhaustion, an-guish and doubt,” said Stoltz.

How to become involved“The success of this initiative de-pends strongly on the type of spon-sors and support secured. We arecalling on business and individualsto consider making a donation inthe form of cash. Each kilometrewalked by the two climbers is a po-tential kilometre funded by you toensure that the Foundation can gothe extra mile to accomplish morelife challenging initiatives,” saidAntonio Venturini, CEO Bay FMFoundation.

“The selected route up Kiliman-jaro is a total of 62 kilometres. Weneed business and individuals tocome on board with us to sponsoror part sponsor each kilometrewalked at a cost of R1 000 per kilo-metre. During every day of thewalk, Bay FM will provide specificdetail of the climbers position, con-dition and most important, providethe sponsor/s of that particular legexposure on radio.”

Your sponsorship amount can bepaid directly to Bay FM Foundationas follows: ABSA Bank, accountname: Bay FM, Account number:4047733214, Branch Code: 632005,Branch: Newton Park, AccountType: Cheque. Use your businessname as reference. Proof of pay-ments can be send to [email protected] or fax to 0 086 612 4499.

Local to climb Kilimajaro for charity

IT is said that human beings aremadeupof 70%water and that all ourorgans need water to function pro-perly.

The question now is: should thatbe tap water?

Generally speaking, the water inSouth Africa is so full of chlorine andaluminium sulphate, that all the or-ganic goodness in the water - if thereis any - will be destroyed long before

it reach household taps. This water crisis has not always

been with us, however, the problemis escalating by the day.

The chemical concentration maybe so minute that it can take yearsof exposure before irreversible da-mage is done. By the time the symp-toms are diagnosed, the damage is al-ready done.

Health Talk Magazine states: “It is

a fact that evils are lurking in ourdrinking water. Enough evidencehas come to light to support this. Theproblem, however, still remains. Wa-ter is an everyday commodity andnot a luxury. Without it we cannotsurvive. Strange then, that the verysubstance giving us life can also beresponsible for creating diseases.”

In this day and age the most eco-nomical and user-friendly way to

provide clean water for your familyis a water purifier. Not just a filter. The reason for this is that a filter willremove a lot of chemicals, but wheredoes it go? So, it fact, it will not belong before you are drinking waterthat has a higher TDS (Total Dis-solved Solids) than your tap water.Yes, it might taste better, but that isonly because of the carbon filter andnot because it is cleaner.

When choosing a reverse osmosismachine there are a few things tolook out for.

The crux of R/O (Reverse Osmo-sis) is its premeable membrane, which should be a genuine Americanimport, as well as a bio-ceramic hold-ing tank.

AS a young 11-year-old boy hewas inspired to consider a ca-

reer in a dark blue suit, and noweight years later, that dream justmight become a reality.

Shirman Brown (19) from Sea Vis-ta in St Francis Bay, has devoted histeenage years to acquire his sea legsand fulfil his ambition of becomingan officer in the navy. Now, afteryears of hard work and dedication, that dream is well within his reach. He has already applied for a positionat the Navy in Cape Town, and isanxiously awaiting their reply.

According to Shirman, it all star-ted when he was only 11-years-oldand still playing in the streets of SeaVista.

“The Friday, that changed mywhole life and shaped my futurechoices, started just like any other

ordinary day of the year,” saidShirman.

“However, when I saw my brothercoming down the street in his darkblue sea cadet uniform after train-ing, I knew that Fridays for me willnever be the same again. Right thereand then I decided that I too want tojoin the sea cadets of the TrainingShip Kromme in Sea Vista. The verynext Friday, I was on my post nextto my brother.”

In the eight years that Shirman at-tended the training programme, hehas proven himself a hard-workingand worthy cadet and has recentlybeen promoted to Cadet Midship-man.

The Sea Cadet Programme of theTraining Ship Kromme in Sea Vista,St Francis Bay - in association withthe South African Sea Cadets - wasestablished ten years ago by OliverHolmes.

TheSASeaCadets is avoluntary ex-tra-mural organisation offering learn-

ing initiatives geared towards boysand girls from Grade 6 to Grade 12.

“I always wanted to do somethingthat will not only serve the local com-munity, but also uplift the youngmembers of that specific community. And what better way is there than byequipping them with recognisedmaritime qualifications that will en-hance their ability to seek gainfulemployment in the maritime indus-tries?”.

“It is all about enjoying seriousfun, but at the same time learningleadership, self-discipline and loyal-ty - developing one’s self through‘honour and skill’,” said Holmes.

“Our programme is structured insuch a way that the cadets will notonly assimilate the skills we offer inbasic seamanship, basic engineer-ing, communications, catering, per-sonal safety and survival at sea, fire-fighting at sea, first aid, marine con-servation and others, but also thosenecessary elements of leadership to

make a donation, contact Oliver Hol-mes at [email protected].

uThe Sea Cadet in South Africamovement traces its originsback to the first South AfricanTraining Ship, located onWoodstock beach, Cape Town,TS Woltemade that was openedon June 8, 1905. The movementspread throughout South Africaand there are currently 15Training Ships, of which nineare active and developing thosevalues and skills required toensure that the maritimeindustry is provided withrecruits who have a passion forthe sea.t

GOING the extra mile to go greenand being sensitive to the environ-ment, Woodridge College and Pre-paratory School recently removedover 30 invasive plants at theschool’s entrance.

According to Lindy Isherwood

from Woodridge College, the clear-ing of alien plants - specifically BlueGums - is seen as phase one in theprocess of eradicating exotic plantsand reintroducing indigenous treesand plants to the Woodridge Cam-pus.

“During this phase, approximate-ly 30 Blue Gums were removed fromthe entrance to the school and were

replaced with Harpephyllum caf-frum (Wild plum), aloes and indige-nous flowering plants,” said Isher-wood.

“This transformation of the en-trance has not only opened up andimproved the entrance, highlight-ing our wonderful indigenousplants, but also has removed a greatdeal of exotic trees.”

Apart from removing alienplants, Woodridge has furthermorereplaced their whole campus withenergy efficient shower heads, hosts an earth hour concert everyyear, and recycle their waste.

“WoodridgePreparatoryandCol-lege also recently won ‘The Groen-dal Recycling Award’ for excellencein recycling,” said Isherwood.

Their Eco-committee has also be-come very involved with topicssuch as anti-rhino poaching andvarious community based projects.

Woodrigde Preparatory has beenawarded its Platinum status withEco-Schools coordinated by RoslynPienaar and the College carries itsintroductory Green Flag coordinat-ed by Vic Radloff.

“This year promises to be a verygood event,” says route organiserJoe Fourie. “Good rains in the areahave significantly reduced the firerisk in the Longmore Forest, theroads are in good condition andthere are even a couple of new sta-ges as well. We’re all anticipatingthe 30th running of the VolkswagenRally is going to be one of the bestwe’ve had.”

Competitors in the VolkswagenRally will face one of the two newstages right at the start of the eventwhen they head to Melon in theGamtoos area. Here Fourie has in-dicated the field will face a challen-ging, but extremely good first stage.
