former brilliant sprinter and Richmond 535 metres track

record holder, now proven producer, Punch One Out

(February 2011 Knocka Norris x Little Egyptian),

them.

Punch One Out raced 49

She established a 29.90

track record over 535 metres

at Richmond and was the

first greyhound to break the

30 second barrier there.

She won the 2013

Group 3 Gold Cup and was a

finalist in the Golden Easter

Egg and Sapphire Crown

Classic.

She won five times over 520 metres at Wentworth Park

(29.27), four times over 520 metres at Lismore (29.97),

four times over 520 metres at Albion Park (29.85), four

times over 366 metres at Capalaba (19.74) and also won

over 535 metres at Richmond (29.90), 515 metres at

Sandown (29.31) and 515 metres at The Gardens

(29.30).

She consistently ran brilliant times at a variety of

tracks and was one of the consistently fastest sprinters

of her time.

She has 10 named offspring on file from her first

two, with winners in each.

Her first litter, whelped in May 2014, by

Fabregas, produced Amelia Star, City And Colour, Fab

Fabio, Magic Diamond, Out Of Punch, Plenty Of

Punch, Punch Right Out and Sally’s Diamond.

She then has two named from her February 2015

litter, by Barcia Bale, Back On Top (8-1-0-0) and Pull

No Punches (19-1-0-1).

Two Fabio litters TWO litters on the list this

week by freak sprinter,

My Bro Fabio (March

2012 Turanza Bale x

Flamenco.

Registered by the Velocity Lodge Syndicate at Eli

Waters, the first of the two litters has five dogs and two

bitches, from the well bred bitch, Run Rampant (April

2009 Digital* x Wave To Kate), whose dam is by

Awesome Assassin x Rumble Spirit (Malawi’s Prince x

Follow Through).

She is from a litter of four named, which included

Big Rumbler, Debello Dancer and Minor Tweak, who

all won races.

Run Rampant was lightly raced, with just seven

starts, for two wins and one placing, winning twice over

520 metres at Lismore (30.71, 30.63) and placing at

Albion Park.

She has five named offspring from her first two

litters, who all won races.

Busby was the only pup named in her first litter,

whelped in July 2012 by Bekim Bale, then she produced

Bagpipes Billy, Next To Go, Rumour and Slick Simzy,

from her January 2014 litter by Magic Sprite.

Lochinvar breeder, Louise Mcgee registered the

second My Bro Fabio litter, which has five dogs and

seven bitches, from the beautifully bred bitch, Silver

Steel (April 2012 Fear Zafonic* x Marina’s Pride),

whose dam is by Brett Lee x Sidemoney* (Trade

Official x Advent Lady).

Silver Steel is from a litter of nine named, with

the six who raced, April Curragh, Nipper’s Babe, Osca

Black, Revlon Babe, Silver Steel and Sweeney’s First,

all winning with 61 wins between them, including

Revlon Babe’s 28 wins and 31 placings, from 85 starts.

Silver Steel raced 92 times, for 12 wins and 29

placings, winning six times over 400 metres at Maitland

(22.42), where she also won three times over 450

metres (25.27) and won twice over 400 metres at

Gosford.

The Gardens’ October Meetings Transferred Four meetings scheduled for The Gardens in

October will be transferred to Richmond and

Gosford to allow for the track surface and base at

The Gardens to undergo a complete redevelopment.

Work to be undertaken at The Gardens includes the

reforming of the track base, increase to the depth of the

racing surface, laying of new sand and the creation of

new and safer track cambers.

The work is required due to the extensive legacy issues

of the track surface at The Gardens. It is due to

commence on 9 October.

GAP at the Melbourne Show

Come along to see us at the Royal Melbourne Show

which starts this Saturday.

GAP will be there every day during the show,

from 10am-7pm, in the Channel 7 Family Fun Pavilion.

GAP ambassador and Melbourne AFL star Bernie

Vince will be joining us on Wednesday afternoon, so

pop in and say hello.

About 80 volunteers, most of whom have adopted

a greyhound through GAP, will bring their dogs along

and answer questions about the breed, supported by

GAP and GRV personnel.

It’s a great opportunity for people to get up close

and personal with a greyhound and find out more about

these wonderful dogs.

Greyhound industry saddened by sudden passing of

trainer

Greyhound Racing Victoria is saddened by the death of

St Leonards trainer Mark Cauchi last weekend.

Mr Cauchi had attended The Meadows on Saturday

night with his dogs Sisco General and Cruisy’s

Empress.

When the dogs were called for pre-race vet checks, Mr

Cauchi was absent and stewards, following normal

procedures, scratched and swabbed both greyhounds.

At the time, stewards were unaware of Mr Cauchi’s

passing.

On learning of Mr Cauchi’s passing, GRV immediately

contacted his family to offer condolences and support.

BRED TO WIN Our weekly selection of

greyhounds to follow, based on

their breeding and recent

performances

VIS VITAE

Black bitch, June 2015 Phenomenal x Enduro Miss.

Raced and trained by Russell Edwards, at Langwrrin.

Raced 12 times now for two wins and three

placings and is improving with experience.

Won from box eight over 520 metres at

Cranbourne on 13 September (30.63) then stepped up

in class to Sandown (SAP) on 17 September.

Came from box two on that occasion and

finished third, 8.51 lengths from the winner,

Counting Pennies (29.91), who won by over five

lengths.

That was a good run and enough to suggest she

is up to winning a race at the metropolitan tracks.

RUN RITA RUN

Fawn bitch, August 2015 Bella Infrared* x Sluice.

Well bred bitch, raced by the Novice Syndicate and

trained for them by Katharine Gorman at Tanjil

South.

Eleven starts now for two wins and three

placings.

Won from box six over 525 metres at Traralgon

(30.78) on 1 September, then finished sixth there a

week later from box eight.

Came from the same box over 515 metres at

Sandown (SAP) on 17 September, when beaten 6.10

lengths into fifth placing in the raced won by

Ninniong Plain.

Had no luck when checked badly at the first

turn and never really recovered, although she did

make up ground.

Has won there (30.04) and will again soon.

ZOOM OUT

Blue bitch, February 2016 Banjo Boy x

Unquestionably.

Raced by Benjamin Magri and trained at Avalon by

Michelle Mallia-Magri.

Lightly raced with six starts for three wins and

shows plenty of promise.

Won twice over 450 metres at Shepparton,

25.50 and 25.22, 24 and 31 August, before stepping

up in class and distance, when 3.66 lengths fifth, over

515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 17 September, in

the race won by Metallic Zip (29.91) after starting

from box eight.

Had no luck on that occasion and sure to do

improve on that result in coming races.

Very smart youngster who we should see a lot

more of on the winner’s list.

Looking Back Special

A New Era of Greyhound Racing

Sandown 1956 Mick Floyd

Nine months after construction of the circuit began,

Sandown Park was set for its gala opening on

Saturday 8 September 1956.

1956 was a difficult period for night time

entertainment. With the city abuzz ahead of

November’s summer Olympics, Melbournians were

also welcoming a revolutionary invention into their

family home – the television.

Regardless, the much anticipated reopening of the

£80,000 modern track and return of the ‘tin hare’ drew

people from around the city to Springvale.

Media reports of the time vary in their assessment

of the crowd, with sources reporting anywhere from

6000 to more than 7000 people attending opening

night.

While many caught the train special train from

Flinders Street to Springvale (Sandown Park station

wouldn’t open for another eight years), the crowd may

have been much larger had inclement weather leading

into the night not created its own set of issues.

Traffic was so dense that police had to close the

main road leading to the track, with traffic diverted to

subsidiary roads to ease the congestion. As a result,

more than 1000 patrons were unable to make it to the

track.

And those that did were greeted by a boggy car

park, with many cars buried up to their hub caps.

While there issues outside the track, there were few

inside.

The 10 race card kicked off at 7.45pm. The

feature event on the night saw Ballarat champion Clear

Orb take on the winner of the 540 yard championship

of Tasmania, Ophie Kitty. Clear Orb was sent to the

boxes a 5/4 favourite, and despite a poor getaway,

proved far too good to score by 5 lengths. His winning

time of 31.30 seconds was the fastest of the night over

the 555 yard journey.

The new track was at the cutting edge of technology of

the day. Two photo finish cameras developed for use at

night gave the judges access to the image within 45

seconds of a close finish.

On the track, the ‘jumping hare’ was used for the

first time in Victoria, where an elastic band lifted the

lure over the hurdles just ahead of the racing

greyhounds. It worked without a hitch, the 2/1 favourite

Kef’s Faithful scoring in the only hurdle race of the

night by five lengths to land his fourth win in a row.

One of the hallmarks of greyhound racing in the early

days was a vibrant betting ring.

That was certainly the case on opening night with

53 bookmakers fielding in a packed betting ring.

Opening night also saw the on course totalizator in

operation on an Australian greyhound track for the first

time.

With bookmakers offering straight out, place and

concession options, the totalizator offered straight out,

place and for the first time, a quinella option.

The totalizator proved extremely popular and

couldn’t cope with demand after big win and quinella

dividends were declared on the first three events.

Despite the early issues, the totalizator was extremely

successful with investments for the night totalling

£5582 – or $173,502 in today’s dollars!

While wagering turnover was enormous, prize

money was not. There was just £300 in stakes available

on opening night – or $9300 in today’s dollars.

By contrast, at the Diamond Jubliee meeting

tonight, the 12 race card carries $109,755 in stakes.

Opening night at Sandown Park proved a raging

success.

The Sporting Globe reported, ‘the track looked a

real colourful picture, lighting was perfect and racing

was quite good considering the short experience

greyhounds have had at the track. (There are) hopes

that it will be the first step towards transforming

greyhound racing in Melbourne to a degree of

popularity equal to Sydney, Tasmania and overseas

countries.’

Sixty one years later, those hopes have been well

and truly exceeded.

More about the construction of the track at

Sandown next week.

How’s your memory?

Does anyone remember greyhounds racing up the

straight at Sandown.

Very little is know and I am looking for any

information you have, any memories, for a follow up

story in a couple of weeks.

Please send me anything you know about it.
