Over Limit litter OUR final litter for review this week is by the 2015

Keroma (Go Wild Teddy x Mantina) and worth

recalling, Mantina is by Barneys Alarm* x Scotirra.

Over Limit, now standing at stud in Ireland, is of

course by the 2010 Golden Easter Egg winner, Cosmic

Rumble (April 2007 Spiral Nikita* x Spiritual

Rumble), whose dam is by Brett Lee x Rumble Spirit

    (Malawi’s Prince x Follow Through).

He is from a litter of nine named, which

produced seven winners and he was the standout of the

litter, with his 24 starts resulting in 14 wins and six

    placings.

He won twice over three times over 450 metres at

Ballarat (24.77rec), three times over 450 metres at

Shepparton (25.15), twice over 525 metres at The

Meadows (29.66), twice over 460 metres at Geelong

metres at Cannington (30.27) and 460 metres at

    Warragul (25.64).

He won a heat of the 2015 Golden Easter Egg,

defeating Dyna Double One by 5.75 lengths in 29.46.

He drew box eight in the semi final, missed the

start and ran on well to finish second in his semi final,

beaten 1.50 lengths by Dyna Nico (29.64).

In the 2015 final, he drew box three, missed the start

again and was never out of trouble when finishing

seventh in the race won by the champion sprinter, now

outstanding stud prospect, Fernando Bale, who ran

    29.48.

His litter of eight pups on the list this week was

registered by Baddaginnie breeder, Barry Mills.

The five dogs and three bitches, are from the

beautifully bred bitch, St. Trinian’s Gal (February 2010

Larkhill Jo* x Itsa Kinda Magic), whose dam is by

Brett Lee x Chloe Jones (Jones Junior x Our Legend).

She is from a litter which included Brandy,

Snowstream Lass, Stock Exchange, Tramps Like Us

    and Westmead Oak.

On the track, she was lightly raced, with just 18

starts from which she recorded three wins and five

placings, winning over 515 metres at Sandown (29.88),

425 metres at Bendigo (24.02) and 400 metres at

    Geelong (22.72).

She has been an instant success as a brood bitch,

with her first litter, whelped in November 2015, by

Hostile, producing, Alpine Eagle, Alpine Little,

Limping Miss, Nunniong Fire, Nunniong Miss,

Nunniong Plain, Talbragger River and Whiskey Rose,

who have all won races and are only 30 months old,

and looking into the crystal ball with future breeding in

mind, there are four bitches in that litter.

This really is a beautifully bred litter, Barry, and

I for one, cannot wait for these youngsters to hot the

    track.

Good luck to the connections of all of the

finalists in this year’s Golden Easter Egg final at

    Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

The race has a long history of influence on the

Australian breeding industry and all keen students of

breeding will be watching Saturday night’s final with

    great anticipation.

My main focus will be on Up Hill Jill (February

2015 Premier Fantasy* x Where’s Demonica) in her

    second Easter Egg final.

She had no luck at all in last year’s final and is

much stronger and more experienced this year.

    Good luck David and Rose.

Jason’s litter of two dogs and five bitches, are

from the beautifully bred, unraced bitch, Infrared Miss

(July 2014 Bella Infrared* x Zara Zulu) whose

Australian Cup winning dam is by Mogambo x Zulu

Zepha (Cruise Creek x Watusi Zepha).

Zara Zulu won the Group 1 Aust Cup in2012 and

finished second in the 2012 Warrnambool Classic and

second in the Group2 Black Top.

She was also a finalist in the Group 1 Topgun and

Group 1 Nat Futurity, with PB winning times including

    Horsham 27.36(B), Sandown 29.85; Ballarat 25.32,

    25.35(B); The Gardens 29.45, 29.61(B); The Meadows

    29.75(B), Warrnambool 25.22, 25.26; and Traralgon

    29.56 (B).

Infrared Miss is from a litter of only three named,

which included Zara Courage 15-0-0-0 and Zulu Zoe

    82-4-4-15.

Bella Infrared* (July 2009 Kiowa Mon Manny x

Bella Ionic) is certainly doing well with his offspring

racing here, featuring prominently on the metropolitan

sires lists in both New South Wales and Victoria.

His winners in six states feature in our weekly

    Metropolitan results service.

Five Victorian’s in Easter Egg By Kathrine Earnst Australian Racing Greyhound

    For Greyhound Clubs Australia

DUAL Keroma (Lochinvar Marlow x Duanna Keroma

Jun ’15) heads into the richest greyhound race in NSW

as the fastest qualifier after clocking a brilliant 29.65 in

his semi-final of the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg

(520m) at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

Having opened at $26 with Sportsbet during the week,

Dual Keroma was smashed in betting, starting as a $6

shot off box two. While he wasn’t the fastest into

stride, Dual Keroma got room to move early and

quickly barged his way to the front.

Once he found the lead his rivals were always going to

find it hard to beat him, with the black dog stretching

out to score by five and one quarter lengths over Two

Times Twice (Fernando Bale x Chica Destacada Apr

’16), with Little Digger (Fernando Bale x Solar Pak

Nov ’15) rounding out the trifecta back in third.

Formerly trained in NSW by his owners Ray and Susan

Pitstock, Dual Keroma joined the kennels of Anthony

Azzopardi after finishing down the track in the final of

the Group 1 Paws of Thunder in January. He made his

debut for his new trainer in the heats of the Easter Egg,

    winning in a fast 29.87.

The 32-kilogram powerhouse has drawn ideally in box

eight for the $250,000 to the winner final and has

subsequently installed as a $7 shot – hoping to make it

four wins from seven starts wearing the pink stretch

    vest.

It won’t be an easy task for Dual Keroma, coming up

against one of the most even Egg fields in recent

    memory.

One of his rivals will be his kennel mate Crash

Bandicoot (Collision x J’S Robin Jul ’15) which

finished second in his semi-final behind his litter sister

    Bombshell Bandit.

Both chasers are owned by Hayley Moffit, with

Bombshell Bandit trained by her mother Jodie, whilst

Crash Bandicoot, last year’s Vic Peters Classic winner,

is prepared in Victoria by Azzopardi.

Also impressive time-wise was Miss Splendamiro

(Barcia Bale x Splendorous Sep ’15) which came from

behind in the third semi to post a sizzling 29.68.

She heads into the final in terrific form, having won six

of her past seven starts. Two starts back she ran down

Topgun winner Up Hill Jill (Premier Fantasy x

Where’s Demonica Feb ’15) to win her Golden Easter

Egg heat in 29.72, with the start prior to that being her

only recent defeat when she finished third in the Group

    2 Richmond Oaks.

The story of the series is undoubtedly the rivalry

between Up Hill Jill and Striker Light (Kc And All x

Pretty Fancy Mar ’15) after they quinella’d the final

semi-final of the night. Both superstar bitches made the

final last year, with Striker Light taking out top

    honours off box seven.

On Saturday night the duo went stride for stride

throughout the majority of the race, with Up Hill Jill a

touch too strong on the line, kicking clear to win by

    two lengths in 29.88.

If Striker Light can go one better in next week’s final,

she will become the first greyhound in the race’s 29-

edition history to claim the title twice.

She will start from box one in the final, the same draw

which she used to salute in the Group 1 Temlee at The

    Meadows earlier this year.

calling her many times, and her not coming to me, I got

  • Leprechaun Miss Leprechaun Miss (1995 Shining Chariot – National Dingaan) was

just the fourth greyhound to be inducted into GRV’s Hall of Fame

for her achievements as a broodmatron.

Despite being unwanted as a pup, her influence on Australian

greyhound breeding is almost incomparable when you weigh up

the calibre of greyhounds she and her daughters have produced,

plus the fact that at least 10 stud dogs can be traced back to her.

Leprechaun Miss transformed the lives of Little River couple Paul

and Diane Bartolo, who went from being greyhound racing

“battlers” to the envy of virtually every greyhound breeder in the

    country.

However, to say that it almost never happened is an

    understatement, Bartolo reveals.

“I always wanted a pup from the National Lass line – which was a

great line in NSW – and these pups were granddaughters of

    National Lass.”

“A mate (the late Ray Bell) and I bought four of them for $2,000

each – which was big money back then – sight unseen. I wanted to

drive to NSW to look at them first but Ray had already arranged

with the breeder (Richie Dean) to have them transported to us.”

“They arrived and three of them looked fantastic, while the other

one (Leprechaun Miss) was the ugliest pup I have ever seen.”

Despite her unattractive appearance, Leprechaun Miss showed

enormous promise as a pup and at 18 months of age, while in

training for her debut, she came on season.

“I was really keen to breed with her despite the fact she was so

young. The top sire at the time was Head Honcho, so I called

(studmaster) Phil Pryor who fortunately was able to fit her into his

    schedule,” Bartolo said.

Leprechaun Miss’ first litter is regarded as one of the best of all

time, producing metropolitan track record breakers Clearwater Boy

(The Meadows 518m) and Lynishia Star (The Meadows 600m) as

well as top class greyhounds Jones Junior, Kenny and Royal

    Assassin.

Jones Junior, arguably the quickest in the litter, was retired

prematurely to stud, and perhaps his greatest legacy was that he

produced Chloe Jones, who was the dam of elite sprinters Trewly

Special, Go Forever (both went to stud) and Trew Millions.

Leprechaun Miss had a return mating to Head Honcho, as well as

litters to Hotshot, Carlisle Jack and November Fury.

“She threw a lot of handy greyhounds and a number of city winners

from her other litters, but her first litter was her best by miles,”

    Bartolo said.

Leprechaun Yap (Hotshot-Leprechaun Miss) became a champion

broodmatron in her own right, winning the Victorian Broodmatron

of the Year in 2006 and 2007.

When mated to Brett Lee, she produced top class female trio

Betty’s Angel, Miss Mini Mouse and Leprechaun Pace.

Betty’s Angel and Miss Mini Mouse filled the Quinella in the 2006

Group 1 Melbourne Cup, while Leprechaun Pace won the Group 1

    Paws Of Thunder in Sydney.

Leprechaun Yap also threw stud dogs Bo Frazier, Global Warming

    and Talk’s Cheap.

Some of the other top class greyhounds and or stud dogs that trace

back to Leprechaun Miss include Birthday Boy, Borat, Glamorous,

Smack Wallop, Two Up Larry, Hawk Alone, Katie Merry, Premier

    Boloney and Magic Sprite.

“I’ve lost track of all the great dogs that have come from the line. It

just keeps on producing,” Bartolo said.

Leprechaun Miss joins Wee Sal, Floodgate and Sydney Gem as the

only greyhounds to be inducted into GRV’s Hall of Fame because

of their achievements as brood matrons.

Vale Alan Miles by Greyhound Racing Victoria

    Victoria’s greyhound racing community is

saddened by the loss of Alan Miles, who passed

away on Tuesday evening last week, following a

    battle with cancer.

Alan, 71, was the longest serving employee of

    the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association

(MGRA) having clocked up 40 years of service as

the Judge and Groundsman, among other roles, at

both Olympic Park and The Meadows.

“Alan’s dad used to sell all sorts of greyhound

‘stuff’ from the car park at Olympic Park so Alan

has been around the greyhounds forever,” said

    MGRA General Manager, Marg Long.

“He retired in 2011 however could be found at

his regular table at The Meadows every Saturday

and Wednesday studying and debating the form

    with his mates.

He loved to reminisce about the early days at

Olympic Park and had many fond memories of the

great greyhounds to grace our tracks.”

“He will be sadly missed and our thoughts are

with wife Cheryl and the family at this sad time.”

A funeral was held for Alan Miles at The

Meadows on Monday, 26 March at 10am, with a

Wake following at the same venue.

“It’s fitting that Alan should have his final

send off at the place he loved so much,” Marg

    added.

GRV Media Release – Arsenic threshold

reminder Greyhound Racing Victoria reminds participants to

ensure their greyhounds do not chew or lick CCA treated

(tanalised) timber as it contains the prohibited substance

    arsenic.

A number of cases presented to the Racing Appeals and

Disciplinary Board in recent months have seen

greyhounds presented to race with levels of arsenic in

their system exceeding the 800 ng/mL urinary threshold.

GAR 83 (11) was introduced in July 2016, and several

communications have been published to assist

participants in avoiding a breach of the arsenic threshold.

Some explanations from participants for elevated

readings have been that the greyhounds in question have

chewed CCA (Copper, Chromium and Arsenate) treated

timber located in their kennels. CCA is used for timber

preservation and it protects from dry rot, fungi, mould,

termites and other pests that can threaten the integrity of

timber products. Timber that is freshly treated with CCA

has a greenish tinge that fades over time.

It has been suggested in some greyhound cases that

chewing of CCA treated timber may have resulted in

breaches of the 800 ng/mL urinary arsenic threshold.

While this has not been proven scientifically, a reduction

in urinary arsenic concentrations following removal from

the affected kennels may in some ways partly explain

these matters. Participants should therefore be mindful

that chewing or licking of kennels / yards constructed

with CCA treated timber may result in breaches of the

threshold. If this does occur, urinary arsenic

concentrations are likely to be below the threshold within

48 hours of being removed from the source.

    Similarly, some seaweed-based animal nutritional

supplements have been the likely cause of breaches of

the arsenic threshold due to the high concentrations

measured in them. It has also been raised in some

inquiries that the feeding of sardines (or other seafood)

close to racing was the cause of high arsenic readings.

Although not proven, seafood can be regarded as

potentially a major contributor to high arsenic levels in

humans due to the contamination of sea water, and so

participants should be mindful of the risk associated with

feeding these products and as a precaution should avoid feeding them within 48 hours of racing.

While GRV accepts that in many of these cases there had

been no intent to administer prohibited substances to the

greyhounds, owners and trainers do have an obligation to

    prevent such situations from occurring.

Previous general alerts regarding arsenic were made on

    March 28, 2017 and June 23, 2017.
