Barbara Perry’s Gift to Greyhounds A very generous $45,430 bequest has been left to the Greyhound

Adoption Program by a former Gippsland greyhound trainer, the

    late Barbara Perry.

Barbara’s son Paul contacted GAP to let us know about the gift

from his mother, who passed away last year.

The gift has been gratefully received by the GAP team which is

currently considering the best way to use it to benefit greyhounds

while commemorating Barbara’s generosity and devotion to dogs.

GAP manager, Larissa Darragh, said options include constructing

an enrichment yard at GAP’s centre in Seymour to help prepare

dogs for re-homing, building a test yard at a metropolitan racing

club to make GAP more accessible to participants or a large trailer

to transport the dogs to adoption days and GAP’s centre at Baxter.

“From what Paul has told us about Barbara, I know that she would

want us to do something that directly benefits greyhound welfare

and their chance to have a good life when they finish racing. We

feel honoured to have received this gift, and we would like to

thank Barbara’s family for their support and kind wishes.”

Paul says he has good memories of growing up with Barbara’s

    greyhounds.

“Besides training and racing greyhounds she had many as family

pets once their racing careers had come to an end,” Paul said.

“Mum always loved dogs, she had dachshunds, Scottish terriers

    and Afghans as family pets.

“Greyhounds gave my mother, her partner and myself many great

memories and we were fortunate enough to see what beautiful-

natured animals they are,” he said.

Barbara trained and raced greyhounds through the 70s and 80s.

She found success with one dog in particular, her champion stayer

Tammy Shanta who broke track records in the early 70s, won the

1975 Sandown Cup and was a Greyhound of the Year finalist in

1974. In all she clocked up 23 wins from 55 starts, 10 seconds and

five thirds. She won nine at Olympic Park (732m) and nine at

    Sandown (718m).

    One report

    referred to the

    greyhound as the

    “current pin-up

    girl with punters”

    when she was

    lining up to win

    her fifth

    consecutive race at

    Sandown Park.

    The article

    mentions the

    stayer’s

devastating and brilliant form, but notes that punters were inclined

to regard her earlier starts at Sandown as a fluke, but she proved

them wrong when she came home from a seemingly hopeless

    position to take first place.

Barbara’s success as a trainer was no fluke either. She

experimented with different training formulas before she

discovered the right one to bring out the best in Tammy Shanta.

Barbara and her husband Bill bought land in Longwarry in the

mid-1970s to establish a training and breeding complex, which

they ran for the next 14 years before retiring. Bill passed away in

2010 and Barbara eventually moved to Warragul.

Barbara was diagnosed with brain cancer last year and spent the

remaining three months of her life moving between hospital and a

nursing home, but greyhounds were never far from her mind. In

fact, one of her last outings was to the greyhound races in

    Warragul.

Memories have faded since the 1970s but there are still people in

the Warragul racing community who remember Barbara; now she

will be remembered for her generous gift to GAP and greyhounds.

    VICTORIA

THIS week’s review of litters selected from the

Victorian Litter Registrations list for the week ending 18

October, begins with two litters by leading national sire

Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x Princess

    Bale).

Astute Essendon breeder, George Farrugia, has the

first of the two litters, which has three dogs and four

bitches, from the very well bred bitch, Lonesome Jett

(April 2012 Lonesome Cry* x Seize The Moment),

whose dam is by Awesome McLaren x Flashy Fool (Just

    The Best x Vesuvious).

She is from a litter of seven named, from which

only two raced, her and Velocity Ice (2-0-0-0).

Lightly raced, she only had 13 starts for five wins

and two placings, winning twice over 460 metres at

Geelong (25.67), with single wins over 450 metres at

    Ballarat (25.90), 425 metres at Bendigo (23.70) and 450

    metres at Shepparton (25.33).

She has one previous litter on file, with three dogs

beautifully bred bitch, Sleek Momentum (April 2014

Brett Lee x Shanghai Rose), whose dam is by Bombastic

    third from her three starts.

She won over 520 metres at Dapto (29.72) and 535

metres at Richmond (30.72), before breaking down and

    being kept for breeding.

Cranbourne breeder, Brett Margerison, has the

second Barcia Bale litter, which has four dogs and two

bitches, from the well bred bitch, Tonight Tonight

(December 2012 Just The Best x Where’s Fancy), whose

dam is by Where’s Pedro x Sweet Fancy (Collision x

Miss Fancy) and worth recalling, Miss Fancy is by

    Barneys Alarm* x Gay’s Fancy.

Tonight Tonight is from a litter of nine named,

with seven racing and five winning.

She raced 15 times, for two wins and six placings,

The seven dogs and three bitches are from the well

bred, proven producer, Easy Baby (January 2012 El

Grand Senor x Uno I’m Loopy), whose dam is by Primo

Uno x Loopylou Linda (Spoken Joe x Kayelea Kid).

wins and four placings, with two wins over 311 metres

at Cranbourne (17.74) and the other over 300 metres at

produced, Big Flood, Brueghelino, Cairo Calling, It’s A

Lie, Jake Of Carson, Mars Rising, Petadale and Tidelina,

Crash Banicoot, dominant Win in the Group

1 Ladbrokes Vic Peters Classic By GRNSW Website

Crash Bandicoot made it a happy homecoming for

former NSW trainer Anthony Azzopardi after the

greyhound took out the Group 1 Ladbrokes Vic

Peters Classic at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Starting from box six, Crash Bandicoot ($8) found

himself in the back-half of the field around the first turn

after he could not match the early speed of early leaders

    Allonsy Grace and Shallay Pallay.

But the greyhound stuck to his task and took

advantage of the leaders tiring, railing beautifully at the

top of the home straight to run away for a two-and-a-

    quarter length win in 30.21.

The win took Crash Bandicoot's record to 11 wins

from 26 starts and the greyhound now recorded almost

    $110,000 in prizemoney.

Chasin' Crackers ($3.70) made good ground late to

finish second, while Allonsy Grace was gallant in

    holding on for third.

The tiring Shallay Pallay ($4.60) finished fourth

but was also handed a 28 day suspension for marring

after appearing to turn his head in the home straight.

The race favourite, Bekin Street ($2.80) never

overcame a poor start from box one and finished in

    seventh.

Apart from the $75,000 winner's cheque, Crash

Bandicoot's win also means the greyhound has now got

an exemption for the Melbourne Cup heats which begin

    later this month.

Honour Roll The Vic Peters Classic is the oldest feature event on the

NSW GBOTA's Calendar, this traditional classic, age

restricted event (open to greyhounds whelped between

July 1 and June 30) was first conducted in 1951 and

known as the ‘Annual Classic'. It was re-named the Vic

Peter's Memorial Classic in 1962 – in honour of and on

the passing of Vic Peters, the first Secretary of the

Association (1939 to 1961). The word ‘memorial' was

dropped from the race's title in 2001. The Classic has

been won by the likes of Black Top, Shapely Escort,

Sammie Sparrow, Woolley Wilson, Tegimi, Alpha

Brava, Brother Fox, Worth Doing, Go Wild

Teddy,Collision, Cromlah Bale and Spring Gun.

    Winners since 2000 have been:

2000 Go Wild Teddy 2001 Toll Security

    2002 Long Stitch 2003 Collision

    Carol.

Was only having fourth race start when handy

third from box six over 595 metres at Sandown (SAP)

    on 7 November.

Won first start, over 525 metres at The Meadows

on 16 August, then seventh there the following week

before sixth from box three, 515 metres at Angle Park

    on 14 September.

Stepped up in distance after a break, for the

Sandown run and handled it very well. Looks a good

    type.

    SODA KID

Black dog, September 2015, Fernando Bale x Elegant

Elle, raced by Daniel Mizzi and trained for him at

    Tatura by Max Auld.

Was having just his sixth race start when handy

fourth, beaten 5.19 lengths, from box four, in the race

won by Alpha Themis, over 515 metres at Sandown

    (SAP) on 7 September.

First five runs resulted in two wins and a third,

Bendigo and Shepparton so that Sandown run was a

sharp rise in class and distance, which he handled well

and looks like a city winner.

    SMALL ROSE

Black bitch, December 2014 Banjo Boy x Classy

Caitlyn, raced by Paul Schroeder and trained for hum

    at Crossover, by Christine Haigh.

16 starts for four wins and five placings, before

last start second, from box three over 515 metres at

Sandown (SAP) on 7 November, beaten 0.37 lengths

in the race won by Fiery Melody (29.99).

That was fourth run at Sandown and her second

placing, so she is a consistent performer, well bred,

who is not far off another win.

    Runner-up in 1979 Group 1 Australian Cup

Tangaloa is revered for his feat of winning the 1978

Australian Cup, and then going on to win the 1980

Australian Cup at the unthinkable odds of 33/1.

Both of the abovementioned wins were extremely

special to trainer Joe Hili, and for different reasons.

He entered the 1978 Melbourne Cup series after only

having had five starts for five wins.

He initially missed out on getting a run in the

[Melbourne Cup] heats, but [GRV Hall of Fame

inductee] Paul Hogan, who was on the Sandown

Committee, argued that with five starts for five wins

Tangaloa had earned his place in the series.

Tangaloa got a start and he ended up winning the

    Understanding Fearful Behaviour

What causes fearfulness, and is there any way to

    prevent it?

Any behaviour that we see in our dogs is a combination

    of:

    The dog’s genetic temperament

Any learned experiences (both good and bad)

The effect of the environment the dog is in at any

    time

Fear is a normal part of behaviour – in fact it is vital for

survival in the wild. What isn’t normal are high levels

of fear that make the animal unable to function normally

    in its environment.

    Genetic Temperament

Usually greyhound breeders are trying to breed for

speed and strength for racing above all other traits. In

their quest for speed, they may overlook some other

traits in their breeding animals in the

process. Interestingly, fear is HIGHLY heritable,

meaning that it is easily passed on to the pups from the

parents. If you mate a nervy bitch to a high-strung

dog, chances are you will produce pups that will have a

    strong tendency towards nervousness.

Nervy or anxious brood bitches also have an added

affect on temperament as the pups watch and model

their behaviour on their mother’s behaviour during

    their early development.

    Learned Experiences

During a dog’s life there are thought to be special

learning periods where experiences, or lack of them, can

have a much more pronounced effect on the adult

dog. Often referred to as the ‘Socialisation Period’ the

first important learning period is from 3 weeks to 3

months of age. During this time puppies learn what the

world is about and develop social skills – with people,

other dogs, and other animals. During this time pups

that are exposed to a wide variety of experiences –

sights, sounds and places – learn that these are normal

parts of their world, and aren’t to be feared. Pups that

have little or no experience apart from the company of

other dogs may become less able to adjust in future

    when their world suddenly changes.

It is also thought that there is a ‘fear period’ at around 7-

8 months of age. Bad experiences in this period seem to

have a greater effect long term when compared to bad

    experiences at other ages.

Good breeders make a point of ensuring their

youngsters are not simply confined to their pen with

their littermates. They make sure the pups get out and

experience the world, meet people (adults and children),

both within the safety of the litter, and on their

own. They take their pups on car trips, maybe to

experience the sounds and smells of the race track, or

just for the ride in the dog trailer with an older, relaxed

dog that is a good traveller. They handle their pups

often, and introduce them to ‘chase’ games, walking on

leash, wearing a collar, and walking on different

    surfaces.

  • GRV Greyhound Care Understanding Fearful Behaviour

    Continued

    Context and Environment

Learning does not just happen early in life, it happens

every day throughout the dog’s life. If a dog has a bad

experience, it will relate that to the behaviour that they

were doing at that time, as well as the location and

context at the time. Context refers to things that are

happening at the same time (people present, things in

the environment, time of day and so on).

For example, if a greyhound goes to the vet after a race

with a broken toe he will be in some amount of pain. If

during the examination the vet puts pressure on the toe,

or moves it about causing even more pain, then the dog

will associate the pain (a bad experience) with what is

    happening at the time.

Depending on the dog and what prior experiences it has

had in this environment, the outcome from this one

negative vet visit may be minor, or it may lead to a

serious fear of the vet. Dogs with confident

temperaments, who have had lots of good experiences

in similar situations, will probably recover from this

one bad experience, but nervous dogs can get to the

point where they are so fearful that they become nearly

    impossible to examine.

Does it matter if my greyhound is fearful?

Greyhounds that are anxious or high strung are very

difficult to manage and rarely make really good race

dogs. Because their bodies are constantly responding

to day-to-day experiences with a physiological fear

response (preparing the dog for the fight, flight or

freeze response) it can seriously affect their weight,

    condition, hydration status, and acid-base

balance. Long term it can lead to chronic health

problems (similar to people who are under constant

    stress).

High levels of anxiety often lead to excessive

panting, even when the weather is not

hot. Panting leads to an increased loss of fluids

and electrolytes, and can seriously alter the dog’s

acid-base balance. These dogs can become

quickly dehydrated, and will recover poorly after

    a run.

    Fuelling the fear response burns

calories. Nervous dogs tend to need to eat a lot

more than a calm dog of similar weight and size

to hold their condition. These dogs will often

lose condition very quickly if they do not eat, and

may not eat if they are particularly stressed.

Nervous dogs often respond to stressful events in

other ways. A common example is the dog that

develops diarrhoea every time it becomes

stressed. Once the bowel becomes involved, the

dog can lose fluids, electrolytes and calories very

quickly. The classic example of this is the dog

that gets the ‘trots’ or the ‘squirts’ when you

travel to race meets that are further away than

normal. This restricts you to racing locally as the

dog rarely arrives in any shape to compete.

Chronic low grade health problems often sideline

these dogs. They are always the first to get sick

in your kennel. Their bodies are so stressed that

their immunity falls, and they become prone to

infection, and can become anaemic, develop skin

problems or more serious problems like

    pneumonia and other infections.

These dogs will have often ‘run their race’ before

they get out of the kennels. The stress of

travelling, arriving at the track, being examined,

and then sitting in the kennelling area for an hour

or so can really take it out of a fearful dog. By

the time their race comes around they have

already spent most of their energy.

What can be done to prevent fear?

Breeders can make a big difference in preventing

fear by choosing breeding stock that is calm and

    confident.

Breeders can also make sure their pups are well

    handled and socialised.

Expose young pups to all of the things they will

experience during their careers – tables and

ramps, cars, dog trailers, handling by a variety of

people, the sound of the lure, even the starting

    boxes. Make these experiences pleasant.

Make sure that exposure to ‘good’ experiences

continues throughout the rearing process – don’t

just send the dog to the farm for a year and

expect it to cope when you decide it is time to

break it in. By putting a bit of work in early, the

breaking process will be far less stressful for the

dog, easier for the breaker, and much more likely

    to be successful.

    Letters

    Letters to the editor

    Email: [email protected]

    Editor,

Peculiar actions by GRV are becoming the norm now.

Encouraging trainers to race the runts of the litter hardly

seems helpful to the problem of short fields, let alone

the product dished out to customers. Ditto the

discussion about installing short races in the city –

shades of the former horror 311m at Olympic Park, with

its right angle bend. Customers hate short races.

But the most worrying claim concerns breeding – or in

    GRV terms “overbreeding”.

The latest GRV Monthly Report and Annual

Report to parliament are busy telling us …

“Overbreeding is now no longer occurring”

“Overbreeding in Victoria (is) addressed …”

“Overbreeding is now no longer a problem”

What codswallop! The fact is that overbreeding never

occurred, it never was a problem, except perhaps in the

mind of inquiry chief Dr Milne, who clearly

failed tolook at the data. But even though it never

existed, either Australia-wide or in Victoria, the mantra

kept getting repeated by GRV, GRNSW, the NSW

Premier and the inquiries in NSW and Queensland. In

reality the reverse was the case.

Between 2003 and 2015 the number of Litters

Registered in Victoria ranged from a high of 1,315 to a

low of 937, ending up in 2015 at 1,029 (GA statistics),

all reflecting a slowly declining activity. In 2016 and

2017 years the figures were 634 and 409 respectively

(GRV statistics) but these big drops occurred largely

without any GRV influence. Yes, GRV did eliminate

direct subsidies (but maintained VicBred races) but that

would not have influenced 2016 performance

due to lead times and commercial obligations binding

breeders. It might also be argued that it had only

modest effect on 2017, if that.

Clearly, the long term trend, perhaps accelerated by the

February 2015 live baiting sagas, is down, down, down.

Additionally, the more recent regulations restricting the

output of mature dams would have added to the

    downward pressure.

Obviously, the long term decline in Victoria and

elsewhere must have been, and still is, influenced by

other factors than direct GRV actions. So what were

they, and why have we not addressed them?

I can’t sensibly answer the first part of that question

except to say that buyers are not buying. I can comment

on the second point. It is the long term habit of

greyhound administrations to act after the event – ie

only when a crisis emerges. For example, the current

GRV effort to encourage more slow dogs to join in

what will be bad races is a reflection of the increasing

number of empty boxes and the impact on betting

turnover. Forget quality – only quantity counts. Yet the

trend has been clear for many years.

Overall, someone – everyone – should long ago have

launched studies into breeding activity to help explain

the trends. It has not happened. The wet finger

    dominates.

It is not just the numbers that should concern us.

Add to the list the declining standards of staying races,

the increasing proportion of races over 400m or less, or

the recent talk about ultra-short races in Melbourne

(Wentworth Park ran one the other night, Albion Park,

Cannington, Launceston and Hobart do it all the

time). And why put in a 315m trip at the new Traralgon

track when it has a 395m trip next to it? What sort of

breeding does that encourage? What sort of customer

    likes quickie races?

Either way, there are huge gaps in our knowledge of the

breed and of the needs of potential owners.

    Bruce N. Teague
