An Upset Storm Brewing?

The Group One Paws of Thunder has a

reputation for producing some astounding upsets,

with last weeks heats firmly favouring outsider

punters, as five of the seven heats were won by a

greyhound other than the favourite.

The two biggest upsets of the night were courtesy of

Bargo trainer Neville Brown with Nangar Jack

($21) and Horsley Park trainer Joseph Sciberras with

All On Amy ($26). Both greyhounds were

outstanding in cementing themselves a place in this

weeks $75,000 to the winner final and their

trainers can take some confidence into the race if

past finals are anything to go by. Upsets have been

a common occurrence in recent years and this year

may continue that tradition.

Victorian trainer Anthony Azzopardi will be looking

to secure his fourth Paws Of Thunder title with

Cash Point, after he secured victory in last year’s

running and back in 2016 with Asa Flying Spur, who

returned sensational odds for punters brave enough

to back him in the final at $29.90. Sheikha for

John Finn was the one of the rank outsiders in the

2013 final and didn’t disappoint her owners,

getting the cash at juicy odds of $10.80, while Iona

Seven also caused a vast upset in the 2014 final

leading all the way from the tricky box six, returning

$6.30 for punters.

While Victorian superstar Poke The Bear is the clear

favourite at $2.30, don’t discount that 2019

could produce another Paws Of Thunder upset with

All On Amy and Nangar Jack drawing beautifully

in box one and two respectively.

Talking Breeding -Victoria

Talking Breeding

with Roger Clark

THIS week’s review of

litters on the Victorian

Litter Registrations list for

the week ending 24

December starts with a

litter of four pups by Barcia

Bale (March 2010 Go Wild

Teddy x Princess Bale).

Disappointing list of only four litters, with a lower

than usual litter average of 4.8, but it is what it is and the

overall numbers for the year are up.

Wynmaster Racing Syndicate, Manager, Kyle

Goodwin, registered the litter of one dog and three

bitches, who are from the well bred, city winner, Spring

To Wyn (December 2014 Spring Gun x Kirabilli Indy),

whose dam is by Where’s Pedro x Kirabilli Jessie (Zed

Three x Patchwork Gem).

Whelping Report

Allen Deed litter THIS week’s review of litters selected from the NSW

Whelping Report for the week ending 8 November starts

with a nice litter of eight pups by the under-rated sire,

Allen Deed (December 2011 Jarvis Bale x Greta Bale).

People often ask me for recommendations on

which sires to use for their bitches, which has never

been a service I offer, for various reasons.

However, what I do tell people is to look at the

sires the top breeders are using and the pedigree of the

bitch, then make your judgement.

Amongst Australia’s most prolific and successful

breeders, the Hallinan Syndicate, their Allen Deed litter,

of two dogs and six bitches are from one of their most

consistently producing dams, Zipping Catra (August

2009 Malfoy x Or Catra), whose dam is by Brett Lee x

Gold Serenade (Golden Currency x Clare De Lune).

She is from a litter of seven named, all winners,

who raced 256 times, for 81 wins and 72 placings,

earning stakes of $462,743.

Her record shows she raced 37 times, for 15 wins

and 12 placings, winning nine races over 520 metres at

Wentworth Park (29.83), twice over 515 metres at The

Gardens (29.50) and also over 535 metres at Richmond

(30.49), 520 metres at Albion Park (31.75) and 450

metres at Maitland (25.49).

She has winners on file from each of her first four

litters, whelped in October 2013 by Mantra Lad, March

2015 by Fabregas, November 2015 by My Bro Fabio

and December 2016 by Barcia Bale.

Ready to Rumble ARGENTON breeder, Terry Callen has a nice litter of

eight pups on the list this week, by Cosmic Rumble

(April 2007 Spiral Nikita x Spiritual Rumble).

The five dogs and three bitches are from the well

bred bitch, Replacing Diana (August 2013 Where’s

Pedro x Chasing Diana), whose dam is by Collision x

Tifi (Bombastic Shiraz x Chili Berger).

She is from a litter of seven who raced 329 times,

for 47 wins and 105 placings, led by Pedro Cerrano who

had 116 starts, for 25 wins and 45 placings.

Her record shows she raced 73 times, for four

wins and 24 placings, winning twice over 520 metres at

Dapto (30.23), with single wins over 520 metres at

Wentworth Park (30.33) and 515 metres at The Gardens

(30.14).

Metropolitan results from six states are on

our facebook page every morning.

2018 Premier Metropolitan

Sire NSW and Victoria,

Fernando Bale (March 2013

Kelsos Fusileer* x Chloe

Allen), has a nice litter of

eight pups on the list this

week.

Registered by Jilliby Breeder, Beverly Sandes, the two

dogs and six bitches, are from the well bred, short

course winner, Silver Bullet (April 2012 El Grand Senor

x Macey), whose dam is by Big Daddy Cool x Peoper

Honey (Proper Tears x Lady Belwin).

She is from a handy litter of ten named, from

which eight of the nine who raced won, sharing 33 wins

and 51 placings, from just 203 starts.

Her Record shows she raced 46 times, for eight

wins and 12 placings, winning twice over 280 metres at

Wentworth Park (16.08), twice over 400 metres at The

Gardens (22.82), twice over 301 metres at Coonamble

(17.71), where she also won over 400 metres (23.26)

and won over 330 metres at Richmond (19.09).

She has winners on file from her first litter,

whelped in October 2015, by Fabregas, which produced

Drink Schooners, 13 wins, Bonding Session, 9 wins,

Causing Havoc, 8 wins and Charlu Skye, 7 wins, and

Boulle, 0 wins.

good record of 13 wins and 10 placings, with three

(34.32), two wins over 520 metres at Wentworth Park

Zulu Zeus litter

Zulu Zeus, (August 2011 Where’s Pedro x Fancy

Jaffa) 2013 Nat Sprint, NSW Final winner,

time), who ran third in the 2013 G1 National Sprint

Championship at The Meadows, behind Xylia Allen.

LANSDOWN breeder, Kerry Barrass, has a nice litter

of three dogs and eight bitches on the list this week, by

the well bred, under-rated sire, Zulu Zeus, from the

handy short course winner, Maximum Entropy

(January 2013 El Grand Senor x Mad Manalishi),

at The Gardens (22.94) and also over 384 metres at

Wauchope (22.19).

With eight bitches in the litter, Kerry, I would be

very surprised if there is not plenty of interest in this

litter from prospective buyers with future breeding in

mind.

Stars shine on Group night at Wentworth

Park By Jeff Collerson (thedogs.com.au)

AUSTRALIA's greatest sprinter Poke The Bear

and Poco Dorado, the best NSW stayer over the

past decade, starred during Saturday night's

group race bonanza at Wentworth Park.

Poke The Bear staged an astonishing last-to-first

performance to win heat six of the group 1

Ladbrokes Paws Of Thunder in 29.55sec, easily

quickest of the seven qualifying races.

And Poco Dorado took her Wentworth Park 720m

record to 11 wins from 11 appearances with yet

another catch-me-if-you-can performance, posting

the quicker time of the two heats of the group 2

Summer Distance Plate.

Poco Dorado came out running and after carving out

the first 280m in 15.99, just .25sec outside the

course record for that journey, covered the long-

distance trip in 41.95.

Surprise of the night was the impressive first-up

720m win recorded by Book Of Luck, who took the

lead with a lap to go to win her Summer Distance

Plate head in 42.23, defeating Poco Dorado's litter

brother and kennelmate Blue Moon Rising by a

head.

Poke The Bear bungled the start from box seven but

after railing into third position rounding the first

turn, gave noted strong finisher Buck's Future, who

had set up a huge early lead courtesy of a blistering

5.39sec first split, around seven lengths' start at the

half way mark, but Poke The Bear came with a

tremendous rush in the straight to win running away

by a half-length, with Buck's Future's second placing

earning him a start in next Saturday night's group

one final.

Wentworth Park's top sprinter Miss Splendamiro

produced a tenacious performance to take the lead at

the first turn and win her heat in 29.73, despite

having a duel with the wide running Benali in the

charge to the first corner.

Caitlyn Keeping led throughout from box five to win

her heat in 29.84, with Federal Lilly running down

Drink Schooners in 29.87.

The other heats were taken out Nangar Jack in

30sec, Cash Point in 30.10 and All On Amy in

30.13.

Poco Dorado is considered to be a wide runner who

is best suited when drawn on the outside, but

Melinda Finn, whose husband John trains the

champion stayer, is unconcerned about their

greyhound's box one draw in the Plate final.

"Earlier in her career Poco Dorado wanted to run up

the track when she drew the inside but not now,

these days she runs in a straight line from the boxes

to the first turn,'' Melinda Finn said.

"Her sister Veloce Nero has box two in the final and

she does not have as much early pace as Poco

Dorado so should not worry her early.''

Poke The Bear is trained by Victoria's Seona

Thompson and her husband Jason was up-beat when

their champion drew box eight in the Paws Of

Thunder final.

"I didn't want him drawn in the middle because if he

had missed the kick from the centre there would be a

chance he could get knocked over by another dog,''

Thompson said.

"But from box eight Poke The Bear will run in a

straight line to the first corner so I am happy with his

draw.''

Buck's Future did not win his heat but after being

beaten a half-length by Poke The Bear in a 29.55

heat, is the second fastest Thunder finalist.

But his trainer Syd Swain said: "Buck's Future

needed box one, two or three, to have a chance in the

final, I don't think he can possibly win from box

seven.''

Box draw for the Summer Plate is 1 Poco Dorado 2

Veloce Nero 3 Soda Flash 4 Blue Moon Rising 5

Double Gee 6 Book Of Luck 7 Barcali 8 Zipping

Potter with reserves Kanzan and Eleanor Rascal.

Copley’s Corner

*Welcome back Andrew

Dyna hunts down Warragul Cup glory By Gerard Guthrie and Molly Haines

Dyna Hunter makes it seven from seven box eight

starts in the Warragul Cup

Favourite Dyna Hunter celebrated a deserved

country cups triumph when enhancing his perfect

record from box eight in the Group 2 Warragul

Toyota Cup Final (460m) on Saturday night.

It was a case of fourth time lucky in a provincial

feature for Dyna Hunter and trainer Steve Collins, with

the son of 2014 Melbourne Cup hero Dyna Villa

having run second in the Ballarat Cup and fourth in the

Healesville Cup.

He was also scratched from the Geelong Gold Cup due

to injury after winning his heat.

Dyna Hunter qualified for the $47,000 to-the-winner

Warragul Cup after running second in his heat, when

run down by fastest qualifier Elevated in 25.48sec.

Drawn perfectly in box eight, from where he boasted

an unblemished six from six record, Dyna Hunter

started $3.40 favourite in a keen betting affair, ahead of

Orson Allen ($4.40), Big Flood ($4.60) and his heat

conqueror Elevated ($4.90).

Dyna Hunter came out running to lead youngster

Jebrynah ($10.20) and Big Flood and forged clear

turning for home as he defeated the brave Jebrynah,

which was having just his eleventh start, by 2.46

lengths in 25.54sec.

“Box eight is the perfect draw for him because he isn’t

always the best out of the boxes,” said Jake Collins,

son of trainer Steve. “The Warragul Cup field, it was a

close your eyes and cross your fingers kind of race.

Before the race, on form, boxes five, six and seven

wanted to move to the fence and that is what happened

to make room for Dyna Hunter out wide.

“To win a country cup after being beaten on the line in

the Ballarat Cup in December made this win that much

more special! I am not sure where Dyna Hunter goes

after this Warragul Cup win. That’s Dad’s department

and will depend on how he pulls up after tonight.”

Dyna Hunter has now 17 of his 36 starts, with great

credit going to the Collins family after their newly-

crowned Warragul Cup victor suffered a serious

shoulder injury at just his second start, only one week

short of one year ago.

“It was a fantastic achievement from Mum and Dad,

who worked hard with him after his runs at Sale where

he didn’t pull up too well,” Jake said.

“From the first day he came to the kennels I was drawn

to his fruity personality. He is the kind of dog that you

can sit in the kennel with him and he will put his head

on your lap for a pat. It also helps that he has a bit of

ability.”

Earlier in the night, the keenly-anticipated return to the

track of Rippin’ Sam ended in anticlimax, with the

superstar stayer finishing at the tail of the field in the

Warragul GRC Distance Cup over 680m.

At his first appearance since September 16, Rippin’

Sam started $1.90 favourite but dropped back

alarmingly early in proceedings as Correy Grenfell’s

Dyna Chancer ($2.20) romped to victory.

In the first of two ‘Dyna’ Cup successes for owner

Brendan Wheeler on the night, Dyna Chancer, runner-

up in the Group 1 Sale Cup at his previous start,

claimed the $10,000 winner’s purse in a new course

record time of 38.58sec.

The son of another Wheeler-bred Melbourne Cup

winner in Dyna Double One (2015) smashed multiple

Group 1 winner Ring The Bell’s previous benchmark

of 38.82sec.

Copley’s Corner

Whiskey runs riot By Molly Haines

Whiskey Riot

extended his

winning record to

five from six on

Saturday night

when he claimed

the $35,500

Warrnambool

Summer Sizzle, concluding the clubs Warrnambool

Seaside Festival.

The son of Fernando Bale and Ready To Riot jumped

from box eight as the $1.70 favourite. He’s For Me,

trained by Jeff Britton was the closest in the market

paying $6.50 for the restricted age feature.

Whiskey Riot, who is trained by Anthony Azzopardi

and owned by NSW resident Sandra Camden-

Bermingham, produced a best of the night 25.126

second run over the 450 metre distance.

“He is a young dog and I probably threw him in the

deep end putting him in this race, but he had shown so

much beforehand and I felt it was a race he was ready

for,” Azzopardi said. “To win this race off the back of

the Rising Star win at Sale on Boxing Day is a big

achievement on his behalf.”

Whiskey Riot’s only defeat came at Bendigo in a 425

metre Maiden Final where he found trouble out of the

boxes and finished fourth.

“After his run at Bendigo where he had box seven, out

of the boxes I saw that he took a little step to the left

which had me thinking he wouldn’t suit an outside

box,” Azzopardi said.

Box eight didn’t worry him in the Summer Sizzle, he

was able to cross towards the lead in front of Major

Innings (box seven), Axel Footluce (box six) and

Crimson Vixen (box five).

“Whiskey Riot is a dog that can do it at both ends; he

has great early pace and he hits the line strong,”

Azzopardi said.

Whiskey Riot is a half brother to Million Dollar Chase

winner, Mystic Riot which was one of the reason

Azzopardi and his partner Kylee Osborne bred their

mother, Ready To Riot’s fourth litter to Brett Lee 12

months ago.

“Whiskey Riot’s breeding is royal; out of one of the

best sires we have seen in Fernando Bale and Ready

To Riot who has continually thrown impressive

greyhounds.”

It is Whiskey Riot’s royal bloodlines and his ability to

‘do it at both ends of a race’ that has Azzopardi

believing he will be successful on the track and as a

well as the possibility of a stud career in the future.

“I have never said something like this, but this dog is

something different.”

Incidentally, Azzopardi trained all three feature races

winners at Saturday’s Warrnambool Seaside Carnival

finale, which was the culmination of eight race

meetings held within 17 days.

Miss Splendamiro

(David Geall) and

Cash Point

(Anthony

Azzopardi), will

contest Saturday

night’s Group 1 Paws Of Thunder (520m) at

Wentworth Park.

The electrifying Poke The Bear was the fastest of the

seven heats winners in 29.55sec after coming from

well back in the field, and he is the $2.40 favourite

with tab.com.au.

The winner will collect a $75,000 first prize.

Meanwhile, Robert Britton-trained kennelmates

Barcali and Soda Flash are the only Victorian

representatives in Saturday night’s $40,000 to-the-

winner Group 2 Summer Distance Plate (720m) in

Sydney. The pair will have their work cut out against

NSW star Poco Dorado, a winner of 13 of her past 15

starts. Andrew Copley

Warmer Weather

Finally some warmer weather in Victoria.

But irrespective of where you live be mindful

when walking your greyhounds that they may

take some time to adjust to the heat

Greyhounds traditionally don’t like walking in

temperatures above 25 degrees so:

Ditch the coats

Keep the walks shorter until they adjust

Walk earlier in cooler temperatures

Watch for signs of distress

Keep your dogs hydrated and

Make sure they have water immediately

they get home

And watch out for snakes in long grass

because they are active.

FOSTER A GREYHOUND:

There are many greyhounds who need a little more

assistance to help them settle into pet life

They fall into two categories

Greyhounds who are transitioning from the track

and need help to pass their GAP assessment

OR

Those dogs who have been a marginal fail at their

GAP assessment

These dogs are just gorgeous happy greyhounds, the

only difference is that need a little more help to

transition into pet life

The reality is that without foster carers some of

these dogs are at risk

If you would like to change the life of beautiful dog
