Eastminster Annual Review 29

It begins . . .

In August the building committee (John Barr, Warren Propst, Simpson Fant, Margo Orlandi, Bill Deloach, Mark Stuckey, Jack Wolfe, and Randy Cottrell) rolled up their sleeves and began the process of solicit-ing and accepting bids for choosing the architect and engineers for the sanctuary renovations.

The Worship Sub-Committee to help successfully transition from the sanctuary to gym for worship are Lauri Moore, Bob Sturm, Bill Collins, Marcy Swan, Fredna Lee and Josh Evanovich.

The initial process of moving the choir out of their offices and rooms in the basement began on October 24, in order for the pre-construction evaluation to begin.

Quackenbush Architects + Planners were awarded the contract for the design in October. The engineers support-ing the project are: Belka Engineerig Associates - Electri-cal, Swygert & Associates - Mechanical, and R. B. Todd - Civil Engineering.

In December, during the EPC Day School holiday, the chill water piping was installed through the EDS playground in an effort to cut down on the time the congregation will need to be out of the sanctuary.

EASTMInSTER’S TRIP TO SCOTLAnD (COnTInuED)

Making music together draws us into a deeper community with one another and the landscape around us. The pilgrims on this journey will forever remember the “thin places” in Scotland where we felt the presence of god and beheld His glory.

visiting Scotland drew our travelers closer to their Presbyterian heritage and increased their knowledge of church history. Those of us who can trace a familial connection to Scotland did so with much pride. Even John Knox became as familiar to us as the friend on the near-by bus seat. Plans are in the works for a future choir tour. If you have a desire to worship the living god through song while travelingwith dedicated folks who have a zest for fun and travel, please join us.

Eastminster Annual Review 2 27 Eastminster Annual Review

Dear Eastminster Family,

These words mark the fifth time since being called as Senior Pastor in 2009 that I’ve written a “year in Review” letter like this. My heart’s desire today, as on the day I was called, is for each of you to not only give intellectual ascent to god’s existence, but for you to experience the joy of a living relationship with god in and through Jesus Christ.

As our culture becomes increasingly secularized, the way of Jesus is more radical by comparison and more dramatic by contrast. Even though we all fall short of the glory of god, such is our Lord’s love that the Spirit stirs even in souls like ours. Such is god’s goodness that He enables even you and me to join in His work, putting Christ’s love in motion in ways large and small. If you’re not taking advantage of the opportunities and resources this church is providing for you to grow in Christ, I pray something you read here may be a spark.

In these pages you will read about the people of the Eastminster Church family giving tens of thousands of hours and millions of dollars to glorify god and share the good news in word and deed. Thank you! I give thanks to god for each and every one of you who is opening your heart, responding to the Spirit’s stirring by worshipping, praying, studying, serving, and giving, in regular and disciplined ways. Scripture tells us “it is more blessed to give than to receive,” and while we often resist, we know it is true.

Reading the pages that follow, you will discover Stephen Ministers giving 700 hours to listen one-on-one to people going through difficult times, forty-five adults volunteering as Lunch Buddies to positively impact children, and ladies who, gathering weekly at the church, knitted 300 hats and scarves for people that are homeless. Just for fun, you will also read about choirs and confirmands, Sunday School, Scouts, sports, Scotland and the start of the Sanctuary Renovation.

The year 2013 began with the congregational input from our vision 2020 planning process being digested, discerned, and distilled into specific steps that could be adopted and executed by the various ministries of the church. One significant first step response to that was our “Toward 2020” Capital Campaign which exceeded the $3 million goal and will enable us to update our facilities while also giving ten percent for god’s work beyond Eastminster. As you read this year’s Annual Review, you will see other threads of the vision 2020 planning woven through both the 2013 accomplishments and 2014 goals.

Finally, whether in exciting reports about professions of faith and babies being born, or mundane information like audits being conducted and facilities being maintained, I pray you will step back and see just how mightily our Lord is at work in our midst. To god be the glory!

gratefully,

Brad

EASTMInSTER’S TRIP TO ISRAELOn Friday, June 7, 2013, 19 musicians from the Eastminster Worship and Music Ministry, along with 12 family members and friends, began a magical tour of Scotland. By Mon-day, June 17, the group had presented concerts; circled Scotland by bus, plane, and ferries; seen firths and lochs, glens and hillocks, castles and distilleries, fern and bracken, cairns and standing stones, high-lands and lowlands; and sampled a wee bit of the local culture. The choir presented two concerts: the first on June 11 at St. Salva-tore’s Chapel at St. Andrew’s university; the second on the Isle of Iona at the ancient abbey. Music of the American church, from 1700’s to current day, was the theme for the program.

Sunday worship at St. giles’ Cathedral was a highlight of our stay in Edinburgh. Other cities and towns visited included Haddington where John Knox was born and ordained as a priest in 1536, Perth where Knox preached his famous sermon against idolatry, St. Andrews where we watched golfers walking across the ancient bridge on the old course, Inverness where we spent too much money at the House of Fraser, the colorful village of Tobermoray which made us wish for a longer day; and Oban with its beautiful sunsets over a boat-filled harbor.

We visited Dirleton Castle where the gardens had the most mag-nificent specimens of trees and flowers, Clootie Well where folks left their worries tied in rags on the trees, Tarbot where the ancient Celts began sculpting stones over 1400 years ago, urquhart Castle on the black-water shores of Loch ness, the Isle of Mull with its winding narrow roads, and the Isle of Iona where turquoise waters lap upon shores filled with yel-low wildflowers, Kilmartin glen where we hiked the hillock of Dunard, and Inveraray Castle, the vacation destination for Season Three of Downton Abbey.

EASTMInSTER DAy SCHOOLMission: The Eastminster Day School seeks to provide quality early childhood education and childcare to children ages 6 weeks through 5 years as an integral part of the ministry of the church. The program seeks to enable chil-dren to explore the world around them and to begin work cooperatively with others.

Through the Eastminster Day School program, the church seeks to actively support the Christian growth of the day school students and their families. With that in mind, the church put in place in 2013 an Ac-tive Member Policy which seeks to come alongside each church member family to encourage them to actively worship, give and serve in Christian community. This policy is meant to encourage and provide Christian growth opportunities and equip member parents to actively live the baptismal vows they have taken on behalf of their children.

Eastminster Day School is guided by Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he grows old he will not depart from it.”

Highlights in 2013:• Provided quality care and education in a loving Christian environment

for 198 children representing 155 families.• Will graduate 15 children from 5 year kindergarten in May 2014.• ninety-eight percent of Day School teachers certified in CPR/FA.• Increased children’s participation in extended care.• Added a new extended care activity – Little Man Boot Camp.• Replaced area carpets on older children’s hall.• Improved playground landscaping and grading.• Families and children participated in several community service opportunities.• Implemented the EDS Active Member Policy to encourage active worship, giving and service in

Christian community at Eastminster.

Goals for 2014:

• Begin investigating the possibility of the Eastminster Day School providing after-school care for elementary age children.

• update the EDS employee handbook.

LunCH BuDDIES PROgRAMis growing and going Strong

This school year the Lunch Buddies program faced a good challenge. The challenge is the numbers have grown and the program serves elementary and middle school students. Currently there are 63 students at Bradley Elementary, 15 students at W. g. Sanders, five students at W. A. Perry, and two students at Crayton who participate. That is a total of 85 students who are being served in the Lunch Buddies program through Eastminster.

A total of 40 volunteers have committed and are available for approximately two hours per month. The “Reading A-Z” project is beginning to work well at Bradley. The students at W. A. Perry, W. g. Sanders, and Crayton Middle Schools are enthusiastic about Lunch Buddies and wish it could become a weekly occurrence. Our volunteers are very engaged with their students and some have commented that the time shared is very rewarding and fulfilling.

WORSHIP AnD MuSICMission: To work with the clergy, Session and choir director in creating meaningful worship opportunities, including Sunday morning and Jubilee worship services, as well as weddings, services in witness to the resurrec-

tion and other worship occasions.

Highlights in 2013:

The team’s purpose is to focus the attention of Eastminster members and friends on a grateful response during our common acts of worship.

• Created a new Christian Life Center (CLC) Worship committee to plan and oversee the CLC as a worship space during construction in the sanctuary during 2014.

• Participated in vision 2020 process and goal setting for Worship & Music (W&M). • Started a new Communion subcommittee to aid in the Communion logistics.• Held a brainstorming session on possible new volunteers for the W&M committee. • Submitted requests for proposals to stain glass window repair. • Held Children’s Choir Summer Music camp in July. • Moved the entire music department to make way for construction. • Welcomed new organist, Josh Evanovich, to the EPC staff.• Choir members traveled to Scotland to present concerts at St. Andrews university and Iona Abbey.

Goals for 2014:

• Encourage congregational reverence when entering the Sanc-tuary and during the worship service, to include silent entry into the Sanctuary during services, and asking members to quiet phones and put away other electronic devices while in the Sanctuary. • Work closely with the Sanctuary Renovations Committee and the CLC Worship Committee during renovations to ensure ad-equate support and a seamless departure from and return to the Sanctuary. • Enhance Jubilee Service to involve youth in parts of the ser-vice, create visitor’s station,

and incorporate a children’s sermon, the Apostles’ Creed, and a live sermon.

• Incorporate sing-able, fitting hymns and songs during the worship services and adjust the volume of the instruments.

• Encourage the staff to continue incorporating unison prayers into all services and to strive for concise prayers by the pas-tors and officers.

• Record services on media to provide members easier access to worship services.

EvAngELISM AnD MEMBERSHIPMission: To extend god’s grace to first-time visitors, inquirers, members and non-members alike.

Highlights in 2013:

• The Eastminster family participated in our second reformat-ted church-wide retreat weekend in March 2013. Building on the 2013 vision 2020 theme, the Saturday/Sunday event brought in three guests: Dr. Scott Andrews, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Bennettsville, SC, Dr. Duffy Robbins, a professor at Eastern College and a nationally recognized speaker for youth and their families, and Rev. David Ealy, pastor of Hawfields Presbyterian Church in Mebane, nC.

• First Step Class for Inquirers: In 2013 we held three First Step classes for prospective new members and recruited three additional couples to help as guides for the classes. We had 48 new members join the Eastminster family in 2013.

• Thanksgiving with International Students: This year our committee invited the congregation to host international students from uSC to enjoy our Thanksgiving traditions. We had seven families partic-ipate, and they hosted nine international students. It was very meaningful for everyone who partici-pated!

• Church Roll: The committee continued to make contact with inactive members of the church and followed up with them to help them re-engage in the life of the church. After eight years since our last roll update, Eastminster has successfully made contact with the entire inactive membership list. In 2014 the committee will finish a comprehensive follow up and then work with the Session to make final updates.

• Other Highlights: In november the Evangelism Committee invited over 35 guests to see Brad Sher-rill perform his new show, Exodus. The Committee continued to recruit new volunteers to greet visitors and provide assistance on Sundays. In addition, another Alpha course was offered in the fall which consisted of visitors, new members, and members who were seeking to get re-en-gaged in the life of the church. A day retreat was held at Saluda Shoals in October.

Goals for 2014:

• EPC will be more intentional about integrating opportunities for evan-gelism and using the CLC as an evangelism tool (for example through the boy scouts, girl scouts, youth basketball league, men’s basketball, fitness facilities, zumba, etc). new registration and application forms will include a question about church home/affiliation. Those who are not mem-bers of EPC will receive newsletter/flyer/e-mail/post cards, and/or other forms of information about upcoming programs and activities at EPC.

• E&M will research and establish ways EPC can be involved in a prison ministry. • EPC will continue hosting uSC international students for holiday (Christmas) dinners with EPC fami-

lies in their homes. A member of the E&M committee will get names of uSC international students and place a blurb in the church bulletin so families may sign up to host a student for Christmas Dinner.

Highlights in 2013:

• Had full and effective participation at all Presbytery meetings.

• Elder Jane Brissette was elected vice-Chair of Presbytery to serve in 2014.

The word “presbytery” comes from the greek word “presbyteros,” which means “elder” (i.e., a church leader). Trinity presbytery, of which we are a part, consists of a group of churches connected to one another within a geographical region. The pastors, elders and deacons, and people from all the local churches in a presbytery are united together by doctrine, Christian practice, and missionary endeavors.

Mission: To offer a biblically based education program so that chil-dren, youth and adults may grow in their understanding of and com-mitment to Jesus Christ. To develop, administer and oversee the educa-tion program in fulfillment of the great commission of our Lord.

While continuing to support education ministries for children, youth and adults, and by approving teachers, curriculum and new methods of instruction, nED’s major effort this year was examining, refining and applying the results of the vision 2020 process.
