Pastor’s Corner- A Note from Pressley

“We are one family in Christ, living in community, celebrating our faith, called,

comforted and challenged by the Word of God, reaching out to all persons.”

    Our Vision

To grow in God, make Christ known and serve with love.

    Our Mission

Worshi GOD, Grow IN FAITH, Go AND SERVE

“In season and out of season, generation after generation, faithful women andmen turn to the Psalms as a most helpful resource for conversation with God

about things that matter most.” Walter Brueggeman

“According to the psalms, the primary use of prayer is not for expressingourselves but for becoming ourselves- and we cannot do that alone.”

     Eugene Peterson

    Dear EPC friends and family-

As we enter into summer, we find ourselves in a season of comingsand goings as families embark upon vacations, children head off tocamp, and youth journey to Montreat. While we may find ourselvesaway from our church family throughout the summer, the worshipteam wanted to provide a way for us to journey together whileapart.

I invite you to join your church family in “Songs of the Summer: AStudy in Psalms.” The reading outline can be found on pages 9 &10of this newsletter and there will be printed outlines on the CommonsTable.

Each week, you will read 11-13 Psalms, taking you through all 150Psalms at the end of the twelve weeks. This is an excellent study foran individual, couples or whole families. On Sundays, the sermonwill focus on one or two Psalms from the reading outline the previous week. During worship, children will hear different

children’s books with themes from the Psalms.

For adults wanting to go deeper with the Psalm readings, please jointhe Adult Sunday School at 9:15 am for an engaging conversation!

Through our reading, studying and praying the Psalms thissummer, may we find inspiration and encouragement through the poetry of the Psalms.

    Grace and peace- Pressley

    A NOTE FROM LYNN MOORSHEAD,

DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRIES

    Dear Eastminster Church Family:

After much prayer and deliberation, I have decided to

resign my position as Director of Children and Youth

effective May 31st. I have really enjoyed my time leading

our kids, but my own children are participating in more

extracurricular activities than ever, which is limiting my

availability on evenings and weekends. I intend to remain

an active parent volunteer in both the children's and youth programs, including serving as the volunteer VBS Director

this June.... see me to sign up to help out!!

I greatly appreciate all of your support and your many

words of love and encouragement throughout my two plus

years serving at Eastminster. I look forward to many

additional years serving our Lord alongside you all!

    In Christ's Love,

EPC’s Prayer Shawl Ministry continues to provide

prayer shawls to those in need of comfort and solace.

During the last six months, shawls have been given to

seven members and friends of our congregation.

Last month during a Minute for Mission, Carolyn

Uprichard shared with the congregation what it

means to give and receive a prayer shawl. As each

shawl is knitted or crocheted, prayers are offered for

the recipient and a final blessing given before being

sent off. Prayer shawls can be offered during difficult

and joyful times, i.e., illness and recovery, in times of

stress, after a loss, birthday, marriage, new baby, or

    graduation.

Anyone who knits or crochets, regardless of

experience level, can be a part of this Ministry. There

are no time constraints for finishing a shawl and no

meetings to attend. Work on a shawl is done at your

own pace in your own home. Even if you do not knit

or crochet, you can be involved by providing yarn

and delivering completed items to recipients.

First Annual EPC Summer Food Drive!

Each year as the school year winds down, the inventories at GreenvilleCounty food pantries do as well. Children in our community who normallyreceive a school-sponsored breakfast and/or lunch each day, no longer have

those meals to rely upon and their families, already faced with hunger related

issues, have an added strain for the summer. If you have ever volunteered ata food pantry, you know summer is normally when the shelves go bare. The

holidays, traditionally the most generous time of the year for pantries, are stillmonths away, but 68,000 people in Greenville County struggle with hunger

every day of the year. In an effort to support God's Pantry and United

Ministries in a more significant way, the Outreach Committee is launching

Eastminster Presbyterian Church's Inaugural Summer Food Drive. We haveset a goal of 500 food items to be collected for 6 weeks this summer beginning on June 12 and concluding July 24. Please remember yourneighbors in need this summer at the grocery store and bring any non-

perishable food items to EPC with you on Sunday. Thank you.

The Outreach Committee wishes to thank all EPC

members who volunteered to serve during our recently

concluded GAIHN Host Week May 1-8. Your

dedication to this ministry is vital to its

success and it showed in the commentsreceived from the guests. This rotation

completes two full years for Eastminster

as a host congregation and in that time we have provided

a safe, clean and healthy environment to 23 families

comprised of 71 people. Our next host week is August 7-

14 and with a new coordinator taking over, the

Outreach Committee hopes you'll continue tosupport GAIHN.

    Eastminster Presbyterian

Simpsonville, SCSummer 2016 Study"The book of Psalms," Walter Brueggemann writes, "provides

the most reliable theological, pastoral, and liturgical

resources given us in the biblical tradition. In season and out

of season, generation after generation, faithful women andmen turn to the Psalms as a most helpful resource for

conversation with God about things that matter most."

The Psalms are often understood as the hymnal of the Second, and likely the First, Temple period - the sacred

poetry of ancient Israelite and Judean worship.

The Psalms, like much of the Hebrew Scriptures, seek to address the central crisis of this period: the exile. The

exile was a historical crisis that began with the deportation of Judeans to Babylon in 597 BCE; continued with

the destruction of Jerusalem in 587 BCE; and lasted until 539 BCE when Cyrus of Persia allowed the exiles to

    return.

The exile was also an ongoing theological crisis for the Israelites. They had seen their government, their land,

and their temple destroyed, which forced them to rethink who they were as God's people. How were they tounderstand their relationship with God?

History The Psalms have traditionally been organized by theme, language, and time of appearance, into five books:Book I: Psalms 1-41, Book II: Psalms 42-72, Book III: Psalms 73-89, Book IV: Psalms 90-106, Book V:

    Psalms 107-150.

Books I-III document the failure of the Davidic covenant, which is made clear by the destruction of Jerusalem

in 587 BCE and the subsequent exile. Thus, these books call out for a response, which is offered by the proclamation of God's reign, which is prominent in Books IV-V. The Psalter as we have it may have taken its

final form in the fourth to third centuries BCE, but books IV-V may not have been solidified until the secondcentury BCE.

ProcessThe schedule has broken the psalms into one to two psalms per day. You can read them both in one sitting or

develop a rhythm of morning and evening prayer.

Sunday’s sermon will focus on one of the Psalms from the previous week.

The following is a recommended process for reading and praying the psalms.

Prepare:   Find a quiet place and quiet yourself. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. Open the Bible to the passage you are going to study.

Picture:   As you read the passage, create a picture of the scene in your mind. Place yourself in the

scene. Ask the following questions: What do I see and hear? What do I smell, taste, or touch?

Who are the characters and what are they doing? What emotions do I sense?Ponder: What does this mean to you? What are you really longing for in your own heart?

Pray: Convert your reflections and considerations into prayers to God. Ask God for help, guidance

and blessing.Practice:   Make a specific commitment to apply what you have learned from this passage. Rest in

    God’s love.
