First Sunday of Advent Hanging of the Greens

Pastor’s Corner- A Note from Pressley

Dear EPC family and friends- As we enter into the month of November, we are surrounded by people encouraging us to express our gratitude and thanksgiving in different ways. There are “30 Days of Gratitude” challenges all over the place that include daily Facebook posts of thanksgiving, word photo challenges, daily acts of kindness, or reading quotes for each day. (There’s an Instagram challenge on the youth page for anyone who would like to spend November showing your gratitude through photos.) Merriam-Webster defines gratitude as: the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness. It is the opposite of obligation, where we’re coerced to respond. Gratitude is an act from somewhere deep within us; from the heart. And because of that, it makes us feel good. That’s not why we do it, but it’s a pleasant side effect. What things in your life inspire you to respond with gratitude? And in what ways? How have you shared your gratitude with family, with friends, with your church, with other things in your life that bear special meaning for you? We are, of course, right in the thick of our Stewardship season – a perfect time to reflect on our gratitude for our great church and how we might respond come November 15. But beyond that, I want to invite you to carve out time in your busy lives to experience gratitude. Reach out to at least two people this week and share words of affection and graciousness. Tell someone how special they are to you. Don’t wait for a reason – let the Spirit move you.

Grace and Peace-

Pressley

Children’s Ministry News

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS SERVICE, “SING A SONG OF CHRISTMAS” On Dec. 20th, the children in our church will be performing a wonderful program for our congregation. Before we start learning songs, though, we need to gather together and give out the reading parts. All children (and parents) interested in participating on Dec. 20th are asked to meet with Lynn and Leah Wyman (our new Music Director) upstairs in the Music/Drama room following the worship service on

Sunday, Nov. 15, to go over the service and decide on speaking parts. Children can speak as much or as little as they feel they can handle; absolutely no pressure to perform!! We plan on rehearsals being no more than an hour each Sunday after church (with snacks and juice) and the songs are all well-known Christmas carols. Please encourage your children to join us on the 15th to find out what it’s all about!

CHILDREN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL IS IN SESSION! Once again, children K-4 through 5th grade will go upstairs for Sunday school class at 10:30 and return to the service during the singing of the second hymn, which is right after the sermon.

We are using the Whirl Lectionary curriculum again this year, with the children reading and discussing the same Scripture as their parents will hear in church. Each child will be given their own bulletin to take home with discussion starters on the back to share with their parents. We hope that families use these questions to further faith conversations at home.

News and Notes

WELCOME LEAH WYMAN! EPC would like to introduce our new Interim Music Director,

Leah Wyman. See more on upcoming music news, see page 9.

A note from Leah:

I’m thrilled to be here and we’re hitting the ground running this November! The Chancel

Choir is preparing anthems through the end of the November, and will soon start on repertoire

for Advent and the rest of the year. It’s been wonderful getting to know the EPC staff and

congregation and see what a special community this is. My first experiences with the choir have been so positive— this

group is enthusiastic, dedicated and FUN! The Lord is leading this church and in a vibrant Worship Arts ministry, and I

feel honored to be a part of it.

Joyfully in Christ,

Leah

Pilgrimage into the Last Third Of Life

Do you dread growing old? The last third of

life, from age 60 up, doesn’t have to be

feared or dreaded. When viewed from a

Christian perspective, this season of life can

be meaningful and joyful. Thibault and

Morgan suggest approaching the Last Third

as a pilgrimage, a journey full of purpose,

ripe with opportunities for spiritual growth.

The authors are aging bookends. Jane, age 65, represents the

growing aging of boomers, while Richard, age 83, writes from

the perspective of the older old person. The authors dig deeply

into the realities of their lives and give you 7 ways to open

yourself to God and the abundant life God wants for you.

Facing Aging and Dying. Living with Loss and Limitations,

Doing Inner Work, Living In and Out of Community, Praying

and Contemplation, Redeeming Suffering and Leaving a

Legacy.

This collection of scripture-based meditations will inspire you

or someone you love to move fearlessly into the Last Third,

looking forward to the opportunities these bonus years can

bring. This study will be led by Diane Hughs, for more

information you can contact [email protected].

Read through the Bible in 2015

Join us in our 2015 EPC Bible reading plan. We will be posting readings in the monthly newsletter. If you follow the suggested daily reading, you will have read the WHOLE Bible by the end of 2015!

We recommend getting a journal or writing down observations from your reading. Consider using the SOAP method and finding a reading partner to keep you accountable.

SOAP method Scripture – Read the passages of Scripture. Observation – Write down what stands out to you. Application – How does this apply to your life? What is God saying to you through this passage? Prayer – Pray about what stood out to you from the Scripture and conclude your time by praying through the Lord’s Prayer.

Reading Partner Find a reading partner or group to read with that meets on a regular basis (weekly or bi-weekly) to share what you are learning. We find that those who have a partner are more likely to follow through. Blessings on your year of reading!

F3- Feast, Faith, and Fellowship

5:30-7:00 p.m.

Sunday, November 22

Join us for a new way of growing in faith together on the 4th Sunday of every month.

After sharing a meal, we will have a lesson, perhaps involving a skit, a song or a short video.

Always, we — families, singles, couples, and friends — will learn together.

This time, we will have a COVERED DISH DINNER!!

Faith Formation will provide the turkey, ham and gravy, and we ask that you sign up to provide one of the items listed on our sign up board in the Commons.

While we enjoy a great meal together, there will be tables set up with different activities for each age group. Children can make Advent Boxes and design cards for Shriners Hospital, Youth will be putting together

our College Study Boxes, and Adults will be filling bags for the homeless (see below for donation items). We will also have a Thanksgiving prayer service as part of our evening. This should be a great time of

delicious food, fun, faith, fellowship, and service all rolled into one event! Don't miss out; sign up TODAY!!!

Based on a recommendation from the Outreach Committee and Faith Formation, the session has approved using

50% of all Two Cents a Meal collections for a Stop Hunger Now packing event on Saturday, Feb. 6. This event

will be a joint outreach with neighboring Presbyterian Churches. We aim to pack 10,000 meals during the event.

Each meal is 29 cents. Every time you place 58 cents in the buckets, you have purchased 1 meal and contributed

to one of the above organizations. More information about the packing event will come or you can visit
