DirectAccess Overview

What is it?

DirectAccess allows remote users to securely access internal network file shares, Web sites, and applications without connecting to a virtual private network (VPN). An internal network is also known as a private network or intranet. DirectAccess establishes bi-directional connectivity with an internal network every time a DirectAccess-enabled computer connects to the Internet, even before the user logs on. Users never have to think about connecting to the internal network and IT administrators can manage remote computers outside the office, even when the computers are not connected to the VPN.

BranchCache

• BranchCache is a wide area network (WAN) bandwidth optimization technology that is included in some editions of the Windows Server® 2012 and Windows® 8 operating systems, as well as in some editions of Windows Server® 2008 R2 and Windows® 7. To optimize WAN bandwidth when users access content on remote servers, BranchCache copies content from your main office or hosted cloud content servers and caches the content at branch office locations, allowing client computers at branch offices to access the content locally rather than over the WAN.


What’s New in Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8

• The ability to register a Service Connector Point.

• The reduction in the number of GPOs needed in Server 2012 and Windows 8. Previous needed one GPO per AD Site.

• BranchCache and DirectAccess work together.

• No longer a need for a digital certificate with hosted cache servers.

• Works with Data Deduplication to provide an even better experience.


Installing BranchCache

• On the Content Server, Add the BranchCache feature and the BranchCache for File Servers or Install-WindowsFeature BranchCache –IncludeManagementTools

• Setup your GPOs so that the clients are enabled for BranchCache

• Setup your AD Sites & Services

• Setup the shares to make use of BranchCache

• Setup your BranchCache Hosted Servers (optional) • Run the Powershell Scripts to enable the server and register it in DNS -

Enable-BCHostedServer –RegisterSCP
