The crossbow cat has been reunited with his family
By Rhiannon McConnellThe Wainuiomata community has rallied around a
local woman who faces a large vet bill after her cat was shot with a crossbow last Monday.
Owner Donna Ferrari was left $1697 out of pocket after the miraculous survival of her four-year-old cat Moo Moo.
However, the Wainuiomata Community has raised $1446 to help with the bill.
Fundraising organiser and community board member Rima Workman says ‘it’s just what we do’.
“We come to the party whenever we can.” Rima set up the Wainuiomata Random Acts of
Kindness account as a way to raise money for Moo Moo and future fundraising efforts.
“It’s amazing what we have raised in such a short time.”

By Rhiannon McConnellPolice reassured Grey Power members
that they are bringing crime down at the monthly meeting last Wednesday.
Community Constable Tony Shearer compared crime statistics from Septem-ber last year and September this year.
Home burglaries are down with 28 last September and 13 during the same period this year.
“That’s a very good statistic from our point of view,” Tony says.
The number of stolen vehicles was unchanged with fi ve in both months.
However, thefts from cars were up with fi ve last September and 14 for the month this year.
“We have had quite an increase in the number of thefts from cars.”
Tony says they charged a 22-year-old local with theft from a vehicle earlier this month and they believe it will settle down now.
“With a bit of luck, we will see a reduction in this coming month.”
Tony also mentioned people with warrants for arrest.
They are Jarred Wira, Jonathon Ford, Brodie Payne and Keith White.
If you know these people please contact the local police station.
Also at the meeting, President Ken Salmon spoke and explained why they moved their end of year Christmas Luncheon to November 7 rather than later in December.
“We have done this to hopefully avoid double bookings.”
The luncheon will be held at Petone Working Men’s club.
He went on with exciting news for Grey Power members, that Grey Power NZ and Pulse Energy have come together to form a new power company, Grey Power Electricity.

Continued from Page 1Donna says she arrived home to her Tuam
Grove home last Monday to discover Moo Moo sitting on the ground with an object sticking out of his head.
“It was as he ran past me that I saw it was going all the way through.
“I was just shocked.” Moo Moo ran into the bush where Donna
and a neighbor were unable to retrieve him.The next day Donna searched the bushes
again, and found him but he was not moving and she believed he was dead.
“I made a couple of tearful phone calls to people.”
However, when she returned to the bush, Moo Moo looked straight at Donna.
“I have no idea how he survived.” She rushed Moo Moo to the Wainuiomata
Veterinary Clinic.“They had never seen anything like it
before.” Wainuiomata Head Vet Richard Pester
says it is a miracle Moo Moo survived. “I personally can’t see how the thing could
go through the head and not affect the brain.” Richard says Moo Moo survived because
the arrow missed the brain. “It’s not the kind of thing you expect to
see every day.”
Richard referred Moo Moo to the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital because they had better equipment to deal with the case.
Donna made a quick dash to the in Palm-erston North last Tuesday, where Moo Moo was operated on to remove the arrow.
Moo Moo arrived back home on Saturday and is recovering well.
“He hasn’t been his usual self so we’ve just had to be gentle with him.”
Donna says it took him a while to come out from under her bed.
“He’s always been a friendly cat who will go to anyone who shows him attention, but he’s even scared of us at the moment.”
Wellington SPCA investigator Ben La-komy says the case is a very unusual one.
“It’s something we haven’t seen a lot of at all.”
He says the closest case he can think of is, three years ago they had a duck that was shot with a homemade arrow in Waikanae.
“It would be my advice not to use these weapons in a domestic environment,” Ben says.
“Anything could happen.” Last Thursday, an 18-year-old male
stepped forward to take responsibility for shooting Moo Moo but claims it was an accident.
“I am pleased that someone owned up to it,” Donna says.
She has lived in Wainuiomata with her three-year-old daughter for six years but says she never considered it home until now.
“It’s just amazing that these people are rallying around.
“It’s made me love the place.” Rima Workman says that Wainuiomata is
a community that comes together in times of need.
“I think things like this have always brought us together.”
Police are still investigating the incident.

Ever wondered where our drinking water comes from? What makes it safe to drink?Greater Wellington Regional Council is off ering the public the opportunity to see how water treatment and the bulk water supply system works, by join-ing guided tours of the Wainuiomata Water Treatment Plant on Saturday November 9 starting every half hour from 10am to 3:30pm.Members of the public can book in for a free tour to learn about the journey our drinking water takes.Water Supply General Manager Chris Laidlow says highlights of the tour will be seeing some of the water treatment processes that remove dirt and other contaminants from river water. “Crowd favourites at Wainuiomata are the dissolved air fl otation process – this is where the contaminants are fl oated off the top of the fi lters and tipped over the side – and also what we do with this unwanted sludge,” Laidlow says. The tour is free but bookings are es-sential.

‘Abandoned puppy’ was stolen from yard
Two week old Noah was blessed at a service at Wellington Cathedral of Saint Paul and recongised by his previous owner.
By Rhiannon McConnellA local man discovered what happened to one
of his eight stolen puppies while reading the newspaper two weeks ago.
Builder John Pollett says a friend showed him the newspaper picture of two week old Noah, who was being fostered by staff at Wellington SPCA.
The Wainuiomata News had run a story about Noah and a group of other dogs being blessed at a special ceremony at the Wellington Cathedral of Saint Paul.
Volunteer programme lead for the Wellington SPCA Kirsty Grant says Noah was picked up after some kids in Wainuiomata had been caught handing him and two other puppies in his litter out on the street.
“We managed to rescue Noah, but we don’t know what happened to the other two.”
John says the puppies were stolen from his home that week by relatives of his.
“These kids have got to be stopped.” Wellington SPCA senior investigator Ben
Lakomy says Noah is one of only a few cases were puppies taken in by the SPCA have been claimed as stolen.
“It’s not something we see very often.“Our obligation is just to take them in. He says Noah is doing well in foster care but
they still have concern for the other puppies in the litter.
“They were so vulnerable when they were taken.”
Noah was part of litter of eight but John has no idea what has happened to the other seven.
He fears they may have been taken to Auckland to be trained for a dog fi ghting ring.
“I have heard about the dog fi ghting ring and I am 100% against it.
“Dogs aren’t born into this sort of thing, they are educated into it.”
The cross-breed puppies were stolen a couple over a few nights from his Parkway home.
“I was pretty angry.”Two of the puppies were already pre-sold but
too young to leave. “These pups didn’t have their eyes open. They
were 15 days old.” John believes the thieves are family members. “The younger generation is stealing off their
own families now. That has got to stop.”He says he is speaking up because something
has to be done. “The only way to do it is for us parents to step
up and say something about it. “It needs to be bought to attention what is
happening in society in Wainui.” John believes the puppies were stolen to get
money. “It’s all spun around drugs and alcohol.” This is the second litter of puppies John
has had and he says he looks after them well. “I am not about breeding dogs for fi ghting,
I am a dog lover. I am not a dog hater.”John says he has spoken to the SPCA and
decided, in the best interest of the puppy, to leave Noah in their care.
“They can hopefully re-home him and he will go on to have a good life.”
But when it comes to preventing further dog burglaries, John is at a loss.
“To be honest I don’t know how to help future dog owners. I think it is a case of the adults taking responsibility for what the kids of Wainuiomata are doing.”
John thinks the problem is the young people involved are bored.
“These kids just don’t know themselves.“We have to stand up and say to our kids
this is not tolerated.”Community Constable Tony Shearer says
the theft of puppies is not a regular occur-rence in Wainuiomata.
“There is currently an investigation in progress where some local puppies were reported stolen; the teenage thief, who is far from the smartest crook around, then tried selling them to members of the public.”
He says he has been aware of a few reported thefts of dogs over the years but
they are usually the result of a broken relationship.
Tony suggests getting your dog registered and chipped as soon as you can.
“Always have an up to date photo available and communicate with your neighbours about who should and should not be on your property.”
Tony says if your dog goes missing, fi rst check with Animal Control then get a photo up on the local Facebook site.
John Pollett had his eight puppies stolen.
Naenae resident Keith Fuldseth is off to the the Special Olympics New Zealand National Summer Games in Dunedin in late November. The 33-year-old will be competing in the 50-metre and 100-metre freestyle events, as well as the four by 25-metre relay. He only began swimming at age 16, and taught himself how.More than 1200 athletes with intel-lectual disabilites will be heading to Dunedin for the games.Athletes who compete are selected from 44 special olympics clubs around the country, and compete in 10 Olympic-style sports, includ-ing aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, equestrian, football, golf, indoor bowls, powerlifting, and tenpin bowling.

New Caltex owner has big plansBy Rhiannon McConnell
Wainuiomata Caltex has a new owner who has big plans for reno-vating and growing the station.
Owner Darryl Pearson owns eight gas stations across the Lower North Island.
He took ownership of the Wai-nuiomata station last month and says he sees a lot of potential in the site.
“It’s a matter of exploring that potential and growing it.”
He says he aims to hire locals and started by employing a new manager.
“If you’re good enough – your old enough.”
Darryl says they will be hav-ing store renovations and a new brand.
“It’s signifi cant money that is going to be invested.”
The qualifi ed school teacher got into pumping gas when he was 16.
“I just love pumping gas.
“I just want to be out and chat to people all day.”
Darryl says he sees oppor-tunities for growth all around Wainuiomata.
“I think there is so much room for improvement.
“There is just so much poten-tial.”
The father of two lives in Palm-erston North and is at the Wai-nuiomata store every two weeks.
“It gives my managers down here a chance to grow.”
While he has never lived in Wainuiomata, Darryl has played football here before and has friends who play a lot of rugby league in the valley.
“They have always talked about it fondly.”
He studied to be a school teacher but took a job at a gas station and moved into a management position.
“I haven’t looked back.” Manager Darrell Cole and owner Darryl Pearson are excited about the future of Caltex in Wainuiomata.
By Rhiannon McConnellA wrist injury lead to a Wainuiomata
resident Tony Nobbs creating art from bone and holding his fi rst solo exhibi-tion.
Tony says it was being stuck at home without a job and on the benefi t that inspired him to start creating art from bone.
“I needed something to rehabilitate my wrist.”
Now two years later he is holding an exhibition called “Brave Art” at Mix in Lower Hutt.
Tonys main medium is bone, and he is experimenting with a new take on using bone in his artwork. He describes it as Brave Heart meets the Twentieth Century.
He says he chose bone because of the uniqueness of it.
“I wanted to give a different perspec-tive to bone.”
Tony says he likes to support local businesses and uses bone from Export Meats in Wainuiomata.
“I try where I can to source my materials and my tools from Wainui.”
Tony has not always been into art and actually failed all his workshop classes while at school.
“I decided to just give it a go.” Tony says the goal is to be able to earn
money from his art. “I don’t want to make millions, I just
want to be able to make a living.” Tony says he feels like it is the last
few minutes of the Rugby World Cup. “I’m excited but I’m also petrifi ed.” His exhibition contains a number of
wooden shields that have been deco-rated with both modern and historical images in acrylic paint and bone.
Mix arts coordinator Chris Brown says Tony’s shields are very impressive.
“Tony’s shields are unique and would be a talking point displayed in someone’s house”.
Tony is also exhibiting a small coffee table that has been entirely covered with silicon computer chips.
He is also exhibiting a large range
of carved bone jewellery that includes earrings, pendants and necklaces.
Tony’s designs for his jewellery are intuitive and different. He starts by carving and creating shapes that sug-gest themselves to him.
Mix art tutor Graham Macfarlane says the jewelry is very unique.
“The jewellery Tony makes is very different from other bone carving I have seen.”
Tony has covered a skate board entirely in bone circles. He has made a modern take on the heavy metal electric guitar shape from wood and decorated it with deer antler and wooden spikes.
Two exhibitions by Tony Nobbs, entitled “Brave Art” and Graham Wolf, entitled “It’s Art Jim But not as we know it” will be opening on Friday November 1, from 5.30 to 7pm, at Mix Gallery, 212 Knights Road, Lower Hutt. The exhibitions will then be open on Tuesdays, 3.30 to 5pm until December 6th.

By Rhiannon McConnellChildren traveling in ambu-
lances across the Wellington region will get to cuddle a soft toy made and donated by local Wainuiomata women.
Pencarrow Women’s Institute of Wainuiomata president Pat Shardlow says it is their first time collecting soft toys for the ambulances.
All together 32 soft toys were donated along with two blankets.
Some of the toys are handmade and some are bought.
“We have got a mixture there.” There were sock animals, knit-
ted animals and hand puppets
among the pile. Wellington Free Ambulance
Operations team manager Geoff Procter says they are very grate-ful for the soft toys.
“It’s fantastic.“It’s great to see we have the
community support.” He says all ambulances carry
toys and these will put the chil-dren at ease.
“Distraction is the best pain relief.”
He says the toys will be carried by ambulances as far as the Wairarapa.
“It’s a huge reach.” Member Barbara Boardman
says she was amazed by the gen-erosity of everyone who donated.
“I was overwhelmed by the response from the ladies.
“I was close to tears it was so lovely.”
She says the toys are a good idea to comfort.
“Many children get sick and have to go in the ambulance.”
The group has been running for 29 years and is looking for new members.
“There’s no reason why the young ones can’t join.”
The project was one of the ways they have used funds collected this year. Pat Shardlow, Thelma Waenga, Barbara Boardman, Geoff Procter.

Dear Ed, I have been seeing the stories about Moo Moo
all over the news this week. It is just terrible. I am schocked that such a thing
has happened. A shout out must go to the vets who operated on Moo Moo, they are very clever indeed.
Despite my anger at the situation, it must be recognised that the boy who shot the cat turned himself in.
Children and teens need to be more careful these
days. They should not be be playing with weapons in the fi rst place.
Imagine if that had been a person! Weapons are not toys. More frequently teens’ toys are weapon based, and it’s a worry.
Parents, please be careful about the toys you buy your children. Let’s avoid another incident like poor Moo Moo.
Regards, Rosie Gregs

Guy Fawkes show delayed Then& Now
The main carriageway into and through Wainuiomata was originally known as Main Road. A special resolution of the Hutt County Council on 27 May 1958 passed “that the main highway at Wainuiomata be renamed as follows: from Lower Hutt Boundary to Fitzherbert Road – Wai-nuiomata Road: from Fitzherbert Road to Burden Ave – Main Road: from Burden Ave to the Coast – Coast Road”.
Up until the 1940s there were only two or three houses along what is now Wainuio-mata Road, but the building boom of the late 50s and early 60s soon changed all that.
The Wainuiomata Historical Museum has hundreds of historic photos of our valley. Open from two until four PM every Sunday in the grounds of the Wainuiomata Primary School.

By Dave CramptonThis year’s Sky Show fi reworks display
over Wellington Harbour – usually held on November 5 – is to be delayed till Saturday November 9 to give more people the chance to enjoy the spectacle.
Guy Fawkes night falls on a Tuesday this year.
The Wellington City Council’s Events Manager, Warrick Dent, says people with young children can fi nd getting to and from a mid-week event starting at 9pm diffi cult.
“We believe that by holding the fi reworks event on a Saturday we can encourage more families to attend, providing a great opportunity for more of the community to enjoy the show.”
The Council has received a considerable amount of feedback from the public that has sought to have the fi reworks shifted to the weekend rather than on a weeknight.
“This year the 5th of November falls on
a Tuesday. We believe most people – es-pecially families with youngsters - will far prefer to take a more relaxed approach and watch the display on the Saturday night,” Mr Dent says.
”People with young children can fi nd getting to and from a mid-week event starting at 9pm diffi cult. We believe that by holding the fi reworks event on a Saturday we can encourage more families to attend, providing a great opportunity for more of the community to enjoy the show.”
The Council is considering making the annual event on a weekend each year.
“A regular weekend event date opens up the potential to create a daytime event in the lead up to fi reworks display in the evening, and we’ll be looking at the op-portunities to grow the event in the future,” Mr Dent says.
The postponement date will be the following night, Sunday 10 November at 9pm.
The show in Wellington Harbour will be rescheduled for the weekend of November 9.

By Rhiannon McConnellIt was a record turnout when Arakura
School celebrated their grandparents on Thursday with a morning tea and performances from the classes.
The school hall was packed to the brim with parents, students and grandparents.
Principal Mark Kibblewhite was amazed by the turnout.
“I think this is one of the biggest turn
outs we have ever had.” He spoke to the students about the
importance of learning from their grandparents.
“You learn a lot at the feet of older people because they have experiences they can help you with.”
All the classes did performances for their families, which was followed by a morning tea.
Room 10 teacher and organiser
Kathryn Lea says they decided to run the event in celebration of Grandpar-ents Week.
“We wanted to continue trying to connect with the community.”
She says they were blown away by how many people came.
“The turnouts amazing.” Grandfather Martin Warbrick says
he loved the performance. “It was marvelous.”

By Fernlea School students Jessica Agius, Kristiarn Patea, Charlotte
U’ren and Saffron Pawson. Back in the 1960s Wainuiomata was
called Nappy Valley due to the large number of children living in the com-munity.
Glendale School was bursting at the seams and lots of new housing was be-ing built in and around Holland Street and Lees Grove.
To ease the load at Glendale a new school was built off Hay Street. Hay Street School, later called Fernlea School named after the extensive hills of Pig Fern, opened on February 5, 1963 with a whopping 369 students.
Permanent buildings were established where they stand today and relocatable classrooms were built on the Hay Street boundary.
By the end of 1963 there were 501 students on the roll. This grew to over 660 by the end of the following year.
Most classes had about 40 students be-ing taught by teachers using blackboards and chalk.
Far different from classes today of less than 30 students, using whiteboards, laptops and ipads to assist their learning.
We interviewed Mrs Rachel Waiwai, who was a student at Fernlea and is now the Assistant Principal, Mrs Prue McIvor, who was also a student, a staff member and now a relieving teacher, and Mrs Eileen Smyth who taught at Fernlea for many years.
They had many stories to tell of early days at Fernlea.
They all mentioned that the only time you went to the principal’s offi ce was to get the strap, or a good telling off.
Many remembered the wet days, when all the children were forced onto a small piece of playground because the fi elds were too wet. Children were squashed in like sardines.
The old identities remembered the day that the hills behind the school caught fi re and the caretaker at the time was found behind the school block with a garden hose trying to keep the fl ames away.
The school had an amazing play-ground with forts, tractors, tyre swings and big pipes which sadly had to be redeveloped into the adventure play-
ground the children use today. Many remember the April 10, 1968,
when the Wahine sunk in Wellington Harbour.
The strong gale force winds badly damaged Rooms 21 & 22, two of the relocatable classrooms that were being used at the time.
Fortunately no-one was hurt, but for a short period thereafter the playground looked like a classroom with all the desks outside.
Later into the 1970s and early 80s the school roll dropped away and a number of the school buildings were used by students from Parkway School, who were bussed to and from Fernlea each day due the overcrowding at Parkway.
Today the school roll stands at 254.The 50th Jubilee Reunion will be held
over the weekend of 15 & 16 November. On the Friday classrooms will be open
during the afternoon to allow former students to visit and a Meet and Greet will take place from 7.00pm in the school hall.
Current students will have a picnic, races and games at the school on Sat-urday afternoon where they will also perform a concert of songs, kapahaka, dancing and jump jam for their visitors.
A dinner will be held on the Saturday evening, in the Wainuiomata Rugby Club Hall to fi nish the weekend where friends will meet friends and the stories will be told.
Details regarding the reunion are available from the school or the website – www.fernlea.school.nz.

Market Day & Folk FestivalLocals enjoyed the market on the weekend, buying from
an array of stalls with food, kitwear, Christmas nick nacks, and other items.
Both locals and those from outside Wellington camped at
Brookfi eld Scout Camp over the weekend to watch the Folk Festival, which featured bands and acts from Wainuiomata as well as overseas.

Willem van Baarle married Christina Valster in the Wainuiomata Union Church on Coast Raod on October 23, 1954. They were married by Dutch Minister, the Rev. Pieter de Bres. It was a signifi cant wed-dding as it was the fi rst weddding that the Reverend had offi ciated since his arrival from Holland.
The following appeared in the Valley News in November 1954:
The Bride was Christine Valster and the bridegroom Willem van Baarle. The bride, who was given in marriage by Mr Willem A. van Baarle, the father of the groom, wore a frock of white Broderie Anglaise: her tulle veil fell from a coronet of orange blossom, and she carried a bouquet of deep red and white carnations
and fern. The best man was Mr. K. Baker and the
two small bridesmaids were Fay and Ann Baker, who were dressed in white and turquoise taffeta. They carried posies of Lily of the Valley.
The marriage service was held in Eng-lish, after which Dutch hymns were sung, and the Minister then preached a short sermon in the Dutch language.
The Methodist Church had recently become the Wainuiomata Uniting Con-gregation, encompassing the Valley’s Presbyterian congregation. This was reflected in the Wedding invitation, which not only was printed in English and Dutch, but referred to the Church as the Presbyterian Church.
First Dutch wedding for Wainuiomata
By Emily ElliottFamilies can have a Halloween experience
when they Trick or Treat at the Smith house this year.
Goober Smith has been collecting and making decorations since February, with the help of his family.
This is the second year that Goober will be dressing up his house with gouls, ghosts, and all things scary to give children and families in Wainuiomata a good time.
His wife Michelle says that last year, Goober received many comments about how cool the decorations were.
“We didn’t even do it properly last year, so this year we’re doing it properly,” she says.
Goober says that YouTube has been his best friend for ideas of what to make.
“If there’s anything lying around I’ll make things out of it. It’s just a bit of fun,” he says.
“It keeps me in the garage and out of the house. I’ve got to do stuff.”
Goober buys the face masks, and creates bodies around it. He has over 60 decorations, some of which are lifesize.
“Two months ago I said, ‘that’s enough,
we have enough’, but I’m still busy making things,” says Goober.
Michelle said that the driveway, deck, front yard and entrance way will all be docerated with Goober’s decorations.
She says that the garage and shelves full of decorations won’t be set up until the day, to keep the element of surprise.
“I’ve taken the day off work to set it all up on the day, and also the day after Halloween to clean up” Goober says.
“There are a few things that move, and we’ll have music going,” he says.
According to Michelle, the family have spent basically nothing, but they are expect-ing people to go, “wow”.
“We’re not asking for anything in return. We just want the kids to love it,” she says.
As well as providing Wainuiomata with an array of decorations, the family will still be giving out lollies.
“At the end of the day, as great as it is, kids still want their lollies,” Michelle says.

By Rhiannon McConnellIf you are looking for a way to get fi t and
meet new people at any time or during any weather the Wainuiomata Squash club could be just the place.
“You can play anytime 24/7 and in any weather, and it’s not a time consuming sport,” Squash Club Chairman Shane Smith says.
He says it is the people that make the Wainuiomata Squash Club special.
“The people are what make the club and we pride ourselves on our club atmosphere.”
“We’re just a great little club.”Shane has a long and successful history
with squash. “I started as a junior back in South Africa
and managed to represent my country at the Junior British Open.”
He says he spent time away from the game before settling in New Zealand with his partner.
“Being back on court over the last 10 years has been great.”
Shane joined the Wainuiomata club be-cause he had family involved with it.
“I went down one day to watch, and
remembered how much I enjoyed playing.”He says the people are what made him stay. “I met a great bunch of people and everyone
is really supportive of each other.”Shane says one of his highlights has been
the junior programme that ran this year. “It has attracted a lot of new juniors to
the club.”He says having a hard-working commit-
tee over the last few years has also been a highlight.
“It’s made my role easier and meant I can quite easily delegate my chairman respon-sibilities and get away with it.”
The club has a wide range of players, with the youngest being four and the oldest, Ray Leevey, celebrated his 71st birthday this year.
Shane says you do not need any special skills to play squash.
“We have a wide range of abilities within the club from beginners to seasonal pros.”
Shane says the perfect squash day would be having a hard game on the court followed by a sauna and a couple of drinks.
Club Days are Saturday afternoons at 4pm and visitors are always welcome.

Harriers celebrate last event of the seasonWith the 2013 Harrier season now well
and truly at an end, we can look back on a season fi lled with successes, right from our juniors through to our masters athletes.
Some of our most noted memories would include the running of our 4th successful Wellington Road Racing Champs on Waterworks Road in August.
This event attracted some of Wellington’s top runners including national representa-tives. We also had fourteen athletes head up to Taupo in July for the North Island Cross Country Champs.
All of these athletes achieved great results in their respective races, with six of them achieving top ten placing’s. We also held the 17th successful running of the Wainuiomata Mountain Fun Run and Walk, now called the Wainuiomata Classic.
This event always attracts a wide variety of participants, with this year being no exception. This year the race was also held in conjunction with the National and Wel-lington Mountain Running Championships, so the caliber of racing was very high.
Our own club members had some great results with several runners placing in the top three. We also had good representation at most other interclub races throughout the season from juniors right through to our masters athletes, including the always anticipated Bays Relay in Wellington where our masters women finished 7th place and our masters men fi nished 5th, in their respective races.
Our junior runners had a very impressive season which was refl ected in selection
for various regional and national events including school selections. Unfortunately the season was tainted with the passing of Jenny Hardie. Jenny was actively involved in harriers and athletics at an administration and offi ciating level, as well as a social walker. Jenny will be sorely missed.

By Rhiannon McConnellThe Wainuiomata Bowling club needs new
members in order to stay as an independent club, club president Alan Dixon says.
Alan says since the RSA closed they have received a boost in social members who come for a drink.
“We have gained members from their loss.”However, he says they are struggling in the area
of playing members. “We don’t get a lot of young people coming along,
which is what we really need.“It’s aging continuously.” He says bowls is often seen as an old sport but in
reality it is for people of all ages. “It’s a game you can play all your life.” Alan says they are looking at combining with
other clubs. “We really need to look at our future. We probably
can’t survive much longer as an independent club.”A number of factors have contributed to the drop
in numbers such as good players leaving for the bigger clubs and more people working out of the valley.
“Since employment options have dropped off in Wainui it’s become harder,” Alan says.
He says lawn bowls requires mind skills, muscle strength and control.
“It is actually quite tiring to spend all day out at a bowling green.”
Alan says the club is a great place to socialise and play at whatever level you are at.
“It is a sport that’s got a wide range of possibili-ties.”
Alan has been playing bowls for 20 years. He joined after moving from the UK. “I decided I’d have a go at bowls,” He says because they were immigrants, he joined
for the social side too. “It was a way for us to get into the community.” After three years his wife started playing too. “She’s actually done better than I’ve ever done.” Alan’s parents had played bowls so he had experi-
ence with the sport. Alan says the club offers more than just lawn
bowls. Members also have the opportunity to play darts,
cards, and indoor bowls. The club has had success over the years including
running the Womens Nationals a few years ago. “We’ve had a few people win the open competi-
tions.”They also held the Maori Nationals
Competition two years ago. The club is holding ‘Come and Have a
go at Lawn Bowls’ evenings from 6pm every Wednesday from November 6 until March 5.
Alan says they have extended the
evenings into March this year because of popularity.
“We had a lot of success last year.” The evening costs $5 per person
and includes use of the greens and a sausage sizzle.
The club is run by an executive of six members.
