“You’re nervous at fi rst but once you’re on the stage you are into it.”

Fairy godmother lead Ella Fifi eld agrees and says the dress rehearsal on Monday night bought it home to her.

“It makes it so much more real and exciting.”The Journey of a Dancer follows the transformation

of inspiring dancer, Rachel Gordon, as she is taken through the history of dance by her fairy godmother, Ella Fifi eld.

It is the third year Wainuiomata College has partici-pated in Stage Challenge but the fi rst time it has been completely student run.

The production is being lead by Jemma Mumford, Grace Thompson, Kasey Bircham, Maxi Packer, Ella Fifi eld, Katie Bognuda, Ashleigh Taylor, Joshua Smith and Sheidan Babbington.

19 local schools will perform at the ASB 2013 Stage Challenge on this Thursday and Friday in Wellington.

Wainuiomata Playcentre are getting new outdoor curtains after being selected to receive funding in the fi rst round of Mazda Foundation grants for 2013.

The playcentre has received $2015.49 to purchase outdoor curtains to create an all-year play area for families to enjoy.

The centre provides childcare for up to 30 children every session and wants to provide an area where the children can continue with messy play all year round, which improves their motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Currently on cold and wet days these

types of activities are impossible due to the openness of the area.

Supervisor Helen Graham (above) says the new curtains will make a big difference.

“The outdoor curtains we are able to purchase thanks to the Mazda Founda-tion grant will make a huge difference to the centre.

“It will enable us to provide the children with a secure, waterproof environment to play in and will widen the activities we are able to offer the children during winter months.”

Police established a cordon around a Coniston Street address last Thursday after being informed that a 16-year-old male was planning to take what was believed to be a .22 calibre ri e and threaten a local Wainuiomata resident. The incident happened around 3:30 on Thursday and the 16-year old was arrested without incident. The Armed O enders Squad attended the scene and found one weapon at the house believed to an air ri e.

A new arti cial turf at Memorial Park in Petone opened on Saturday. The turf was o cially opened by Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace, New Zealand Football Board Chair Frank van Hat-tum, Petone Football Club Chair Craig Deadman, and Capital Football Chief Executive, Richard Reid.A number of special guests also at-tended.The construction of the arti cial turf is a joint project between Capital Football, FIFA (represented by NZ Football), and Hutt City Council.

By Rhiannon McConnellWainuiomata resident

Thomas Kiefer has developed an idea which could change the face of learning in New Zealand.

Thomas says his website idea, Pennydrop, is Youtube for the New Zealand school curriculum.

“It’s engaging, it’s having fun and getting confi dent with technologies.”

The website runs on the idea of providing affordable, high quality tutoring through easy understandable video tutorials in compliance with the NZ curriculum for school and tertiary education.

Thomas says Pennydrop meets a need for easy to ac-cess educational information.

“People don’t read books lots anymore and the internet takes too long.

“This is a really unique way for supplementary learning that does not exist currently in NZ in this form.”

The idea for Pennydrop was born out of Thomas’ love for knowledge and helping others.

“I am passionate about in-formation and sharing knowl-edge and giving a student a comprehensive tool at hand any time, anywhere.”

Thomas and his co-founders Nathan Perry and Matthew Cornes fund the project them-selves and work day jobs and focus on Pennydrop at night.

Thomas says tutors can be anyone with a special knowl-edge in a subject matter.

The videos will be screened before being uploaded to check quality and accuracy.

Each video will comply with NZQA standards.

Even current students are welcome to become tutors.

“Creating video tutorials can be a good source of sec-ondary income or pocket money for the students while at the same time the students obtain knowledge.”

The videos will be no longer than ten minutes in order to keep the students full atten-tion.

He says they will be “knowl-edge bites” and subjects will be broken down.

“We have the most effective and fast way to give informa-tion.”

The company are still in the developing phase but a basic website is up and running for students to register for free to receive updates.

Tutors are also very wel-come to register and upload video tutorials.

Once a large number of tutorials are available on Pennydrop they will introduce subscriptions plans (1, 6, 9 and 12 month).

“These will be very afford-able.

“Education, for me, should be accessible to everyone.

As for the long term, Thom-as has international dreams for Pennydrop.

“We want to make New Zealand a place where ideas get born that the world needs.”

Thomas completed a bach-elor’s degree in Engineer-ing with honours from the University of Applied Sci-ence Karlsruhe, an Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the Steinbeis-

University Berlin and earned a PhD in Business Management from the Comenius University Bratislava. He moved with his wife to New Zealand in 2009. He also has experience tutoring.

Once the subscription plans are

introduced, the tutors will start earning money for each video tutorial students watch.

Thomas says they hope to be ready for the subscription plans during spring/summer this year and are currently looking for investors.

New website uses videos to share knowledge‘The YouTube of Education’

Thomas Kiefer came up with the idea of Pennydrop to help students learn in an online and interactive environment.

Building 2000 homes a concern

Keep an eye out

Another view on Government reforms

Retirement Village needed

Dear Ed,The proposal to build a possible

2000 homes in the Upper Fitzherbert area raises concerns for me.

When you consider there must be around 500 dwellings on small to medium sized sections in the area between Arakura School and the end of Wellington Rd, 2000 new dwell-ings in Upper Fitzherbert sounds like a high density design.

The Mayor states that these ad-ditional houses will attract young people to the area.

Wainuiomata grew due to the industries and therefore employ-ment opportunities in the lower Hutt Valley.

Putting it simply people need a reason to live here.

Another access road is the carrot they are dangling to get public sup-

port for the proposal. My fear is that this incentive will

disappear because of any number excuses that politicians use like “The cost of the road has spiralled since the 2013 proposal.”

Wainuiomata may be left with the ghettoisation of Upper Fitzherbert and no new access.

Mr K BarclayWainuiomata

Dear Ed, Another way of looking at the Gov-

ernment reforms is they are going back where we had our own council.

But this not possible because the law only allows a two teared system and the legal status of the community boards is a unincorporated body.

It is quite possible that Wainuiomata will not have a community board unless they make all the wards turn into Local Area Councils.

But one of the effects of having a

Unitary Authority for the region is Hutt City will lose its legal status which as local authority gives it power to make decisions about how they spend funds collected to run the city.

So it’s about monetary and fi scal restraints.

Local Area Councils are instru-ments which help put a capping on funding, how rates are spent, and in the long term will see businesses have rates cut and residential rates

go up.What happened with amalgama-

tion in 1989 is they bankrupted the Hutt County Council, Petone and Eastborne borough councils.

So if the legal status of local author-ity, differentials and boundaries are removed, in the long term it will see residential rates go and statistics will say they keep rates below the rate of infl ation.

Mike GriggWainuiomata

Dear Ed, I defi ntely think a retirement home

would be worth having in Wainui. It is too far to travel for our parents

and grandparents who grew up here to have to leave in their old age.

Many would benefi t from one, as families would also lessen the travel to leave Wainui to visit.

A beautiful retirement village would be well received in the com-munity, and most likely well utilised.

It’s not fair to make our loved ones leave Wainui because they are no longer capable of living in their own home.

If they can’t live in their own home, how much harder would it

be to move somewhere completely unfamiliar!

There are probably plenty of places it could go, and if it means keeping the family line and heritage in the area then it would be good.

Desperate ‘Oldy’Wainuiomata

Dear Ed, How terrible to hear that a

woman was dragged behind a car.

I thought this country was sane!

I never thought the day would come where I would read about such an incident happening in the North Is-

land. How did that sick person

become so corrupt? It is awful, and we need

to stick together as a com-munity to make sure nothing that like happens here!

By Emily LipsysA valuable group of volunteers,

along with Greater Wellington Regional Council have been working towards keeping part of the Wainuiomata Water Col-lection Area rodent free with regular pest control and moni-toring programmes.

Recently this group celebrated 10 years of working together, and also farewelled two mem-bers of the group who have been helping in this initiative from the start, Glenys Evans and Marianne Jenner.

Candles on the 10th anniver-sary cake were lit, and the cake was eaten before they set out on their rodent patrol of the bush.

Nikki McArthur, Environ-mental Scientist at Greater Wel-lington Regional Council, says that the work these volunteers do contributes to a much larger project of restoring the native forest in the Wainuiomata catch-

ment to a healthy state. “It would have been expensive

to have paid staff doing this work,” he says, “It has saved us and the Wellington ratepayers many thousands of dollars.”

This forest includes one of the largest remnants of lowland podocarp forest left in the lower North Island and is full of unique native trees and plants such as ancient pukatea, rimu, matai, beech and rata trees, as well as ferns, and Dawsonia superba - the world’s biggest moss.

“The restoration project aims to restore the native bush back as close to a healthy natural state as possible,” says Mr McArthur.

He says that these programmes work in two ways - keeping the number of pest animals down in the area, which in turn allows the vegetation to rejuvenate and helps to benefi t the bird popula-tions here as well.

Another benefi t of this work is

that it contributes to making the area a safer place for bird spe-cies that have been lost over the years, and these are slowly being reintroduced and reinstated.

“There have been some North Island robin sightings, since their reintroduction to the catchment last year,” says Mr McArthur, “Birds have stayed and they are breeding.”

He says that kiwis are also another species that have re-cently re-established, but that they are actually doing the job themselves thanks to reintroduc-tion efforts being carried out in the neighbouring Rimutaka Forest Park.

The volunteer group goes out four times a year to check between 200 and 300 rat track-ing stations.

The aim of this monitoring is to show whether or not rat track-ing is being maintained below a 5% tracking rate, which is the

target for the pest control being carried out in the catchment.

“The tracking makes sure we are achiev-ing the aims of the project, and gives us

the confi dence to continue attempts to re-introduce native species that otherwise couldn’t survive in the presence of these predators,” he says.

By Rhiannon McConnellThere is a new doctor at Whai Or-

anga Health Centre and he is already keen to stay.

Dr Kevin DeGinder says he loves the Wainuiomata community and plans to convince them to let him stay longer than his current six month commitment.

“There is no place else in this country that I want to go back to.

“I like it here.” Kevin, who has been practicing

medicine for nearly 40 years, is origi-nally from Hawaii and his children still live there.

His wife, a retired nurse, is currently back in Hawaii looking after her ailing mother.

“We are soul mates so separation is hard on us but we are doing it for a purpose.”

Kevin most recently spent three years in Dannevirke and previous to that he spent four and half years in the East Cape working with Ngati Pourou.

Kevin says a doctor he knew there had spent time at Whai Oranga and had mentioned the centre in glowing terms.

“You get good doctors here and they love to stay.”

While in Dannevirke he qualifi ed as a rural hospital GP.

When the opportunity to work at Whai Oranga came up, he took it.

The move was made sweeter by the chance to work with one of his old

students, Sashi Braga. Kevin says he has been amazed by

the hard work and dedication of the nurses and staff at the centre.

“I am very privileged to be able to work with such an excellent team.”

He has a passion for Waka Ama, Maori martial arts and scuba diving.

“I am looking forward to getting back into things.”

One of the things Kevin loves about Wainuiomata is the country town feel.

“I love the fact we have this little country town that is right across the ridge from a big city.

“I enjoy the community.” His father was a country doctor and

he always wanted to follow in his footsteps.

By Rhiannon McConnellFirestone Wainuiomata has

moved to a new, bigger and better location in Parkway.

Technician Cory de Kort says they are really excited.

“Everyone is rapped that we are moving to a bigger building with a waiting room.”

At their current home behind Caltex on the Strand they do not have the space for a waiting room which means customers have to stand.

In their new premise at 7 Park-way Road they will have room for a waiting room and be much more visible to the community.

“No one knows where we are now,” Cory says.

He says at the Parkway loca-tion people will not be able to miss them.

Cory works with his parents Paul and Annette de Kort who started the business eleven years ago. They have been in their current location for seven and a half years but have been looking

for the opportunity to move to a bigger location.

“When the place came up for sale the location caught our eye.”

Cory says he loves working in Wainuiomata.

“The people in Wainui and the

clients you don’t get anywhere. They are really genuine.”

The Wainuiomata Grey Power had their fi rst meeting in their new venue last Wednesday.

Grey power has moved to Life City Church since the RSA closed.

President Ken Salmon says they have been very impressed with how the church has been treating them.

The meeting started with the annual general meeting and then moved into hearing from speaker Errol Baird.

He spoke of the 14 years he spent in Jamaica.

“Imagine a place where there is no superannuation, indeed very little in the way of social services and benefi ts- you are largely on your own.”

Grey Power meet in new venue

He was a citizen of the country by choice and met his second wife there.

Errol fi rst went to Jamaica in 1970 to work for Alcan Jamaica and as a part-time missionary.

He says churches, Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis pay for most things.

He says poverty is everywhere in Jamaica.

“No body in this country is poor, not like in the third world.”

Grey power speaker Errol Baird.

Governance consultationCommunity views on local government reform will be the theme of shared consultation in the Hutt Valley beginning on Tuesday 28 May. The two cities of Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt have agreed to work together on the consultation which will run for just under three weeks through to 14 June. Options offered for consideration cover an enhanced status quo model, a united Hutt Valley Council, or a single council for the Wellington region. Colmar Brunton will also run a survey alongside the consultation. This will provide your council with a clear idea on what our community wants for the future governance of our local authorities.

Wainuiomata residents are encouraged to complete the survey either online at www.yourvoiceyourchoice.org.nz or complete the form in today’s Hutt News.

Recognising community work

Wainuiomata residents are urged to nominate people for our Hutt City Community Awards which include Civic Awards closing on Friday 7 June, and the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards (28 June) and the 2013 Hutt City Safe City Awards (29 July). There have been successful nominees from the Wainuiomata community in the past. I am looking forward to these awards which provide a great opportunity to acknowledge those who work hard and selfl essly within our community. The awards

will be announced at a special ceremony on 18 September.

Wainuiomata Trail Project

It was a great turn out for the The Wainuiomata Trail Project 6 hour race on the mountain bike track at Waiu Street, Parkway. The night mountain biking was even more popular with many turning up to experience the exhilaration of mountain biking in the dark! Well done to all those involved.

And Finally…

I also want to take the opportunity to congratulate the Riddiford Lions on their 40th anniversary of service to the community of Wainuiomata. An outstanding effort, well done!

By Shannon SweetmanA new academy based in Wainuiomata

has been digging into its own pockets to give kids a step into the music and dance scene.

Limitless Performance Academy, run by dance teacher Sam Fuataga and musician David Lepou, charges as little as fi ve to ten dollars for hip-hop, vocal, guitar and keyboard lessons, meaning it ran at a loss during its establishment.

Similar classes at any other establishment would cost more than fi ve times that much, Mr Fuataga says.

“We do dig into some of our own money, but we want to put an investment into those kids.

“You never know what might happen – one of them might become famous.”

The academy’s name derives from its ultimate goal - to remove limits like time and money from its students to give them a chance to grow, Mr Fuataga says.

“When I was growing up there weren’t many opportunities for local lessons like these.

“Limitless Academy is an avenue for the kids to have a real go at anything.”

Every aspect of the classes is driven by the need to make them as accessible as possible

for the children and their parents, he says. For example, in addition to their minimal

cost, the lessons are held in convenient after-school slot hours, typically around three to six pm.

Mr Fuataga is an experienced dancer who used to perform with Auckland’s Black Grace Dance Company, while Mr Lepou is a trained musician who has sung for the New Zealand Opera Chorus.

Their classes aim to teach the students movement and basic skills in dance and music, accessing their “natural talents” and teaching them confi dence, Mr Fuataga says.

“You have to learn not to take yourself too seriously, and start off with the basics.

“When they get a move right, you can just see the joy in their faces. It’s really worthwhile.”

Typical classes have about 30 to 40 stu-dents aged anywhere from 7 to 16 years old.

Limitless classes run at four di erent sites: Wainuiomata, Taita, Petone and Stokes Valley. Hip-hop classes run for 45 minutes and music lessons for 30 minutes.Lessons cost $5 for Kids on f.o.o.t after school care members and $10 for non-members. Students at Wainuiomata High School were part of the real world of business for three days last week.

The Mai Biz program taught students how to run a business, come up with ideas and perform well as a team.

Teams came up with a business idea and then had to develop it and present it to judges.

Student Leitu Lemau says she learnt a lot and made fi ve new friends out of the experience.

“I have more respect of CEOs and product people and marketing, what the big guys do.”

Vision Training and Mai Biz facilitator Mark Douglas says he enjoys coming to Wainuiomata High School every year.

“I come here and have the greatest time.

“I have enjoyed the kids. They have has a lot of fun and learn a lot of

life skills.” Judge and ex-school teacher Rae Julian says

she was impressed by all the work the students had put in.

“I thought they did wonderful stuff and some really innovative ideas.”

Some of the ideas were a rubber duck with a thermostat to check the water temperature for babies, a water proof iPod dock and earring headphones.

The winning idea was an app for students that could hold timetables, play music that stopped when the teacher was talking and included education games.

14 Wednesday May 29, 2013 Wainuiomata sport

By Emily LipsysWrestling and Wainuiomata may

not be two words you’d expect to see together, but for Paul Sayers these are two things he is really proud of.

Mr Sayers was born and bred in Wainuiomata, and since the age of six he has been watching WWE style wrestling on TV featuring the likes of Hulk Hogan and John Cena.

“It’s just something I have always loved if I had a dollar for every time someone told me I’d grow out of this phase, I’d be a millionaire,” says Mr Sayers.

He says that he started his own wrestling career seven years ago when he saw an article in a paper about becoming a professional wrestler.

“My stage name is ‘That Young Warrior’,” says Mr Sayers, “I wear these real cool tights, that are half gruts and half tights with a lot of colour. It’s real original and out there much like me!”

His proud mum, Maxine Sayers, de-scribes her son’s interest in wrestling as an ‘undying passion for wrestling.’

She also says that when Paul fi rst started training at the He Toa Gym in Ava, that he was the youngest wrestler of this kind in New Zealand.

“He’s been doing moves for a long time,” says Ms Sayers.

“At the age of 12-13 he started train-

ing, but before then, he’d try practicing on his sister,” she laughs.

Mr Sayers whole family has been backing his passion for wrestling since day one.

“The whole immediate family goes to support him,” says Ms Sayers.

She says that her son would watch wrestling on TV with his grandad when he was little, and they still talk about it whenever they get the chance.

“Nana was the seamstress of his past costumes,” she continues, “and his sister Caitlin cheers him on.”

And as for Ms Sayers, like every mum, when she is watching her son in the ring she worries he is going to injure himself.

She says that he has been knocked out in the ring before, and got right back up and started wrestling again afterwards.

“When I’m sitting there watching, I think -that’s my son!”.

“I’m not a wrestling fan to be honest, but I love to support Paul.”

Mr Sayers says that the popularity of wrestling is on a gradual increase in New Zealand, and this is refl ected in sales of tickets of the shows in the Wellington region.

“It’s something that feels like it is on a cycle and by the looks of things the cycle is about to peak again, but with IPW [Impact Pro Wrestling] in

Auckland closing down due to money issues who really knows?” he says.

“Our door take seems to grow a bit more each time we perform, so it looks good to be growing for the time being.”

In the past he has travelled to partici-pate in this sport, but always comes back home to Wainuiomata in the end.

“I’ve wrestled up and down the North Island. I wrestled for the IPWA South Pacifi c title in the Gold Coast a few years back too,” Says Mr Sayers.

By night he is known as ‘That Young Warrior’ in the ring, but during the day he is currently the Programs and Events intern at El Rancho camp on the Kapiti Coast.

Ms Sayers says that her son comes and goes from Wainuiomata these days.

“Even though he works on the Kapiti Coast, he is still fi ercely Waiuni.”

On the 1 June at Wainuiomata Hall, from 7pm ‘That Young Warrior’ will be a part of the 20 man Rumble match, and the winner of this will get to wrestle for the NZWPW [New Zealand Wide Pro Wrestling] title. Tickets $15 adults $10 children.

Ulalei Wainuiomata Netball was in lightning form against HSOG (High School Old Girls) on last Saturday, winning the game 67 - 32.

It was an important game for Ulalei to confi rm their entry into the 2013 Regional Super League competition for the second round.

The team was ably led by their Co-Captains Sina Tamaalii and Travestine Cook.

Sina Tamaalii was in fine form playing goal attack and shooting at over 80% and creat-ing havoc defensively pulling in a number of intercepts to lead the way for the team in securing the win.

Goal shooter Vaelagi Paulo showed why she was 2011

RSL most valuable player, also shooting at over 80% in the fi rst half and then fi nishing her contribution with strong rebounding as circle defence.

The foundation for the win was laid by the defensive duo of Teuila Sagaga and Lilian Mapu who made it diffi cult for HSOG to get into their shooting circle, it was 7-0 before HSOG got their fi rst goal.

Every player in the team contributed well a good mix of youth and maturity and these players will lead the way for Ulalei in the next round.

Ulalei will now play in the Regional Superleague Com-petition for the fi rst time in its history, the competition starts Thursday June 6.

By Rhiannon McConnellLocal girl Stephanie Hoare fought against

pain and injury to be named in the New Zealand U15 touch team to play in Brisbane in October this year.

The 15-year-old damaged two vertebrae in her back and slipped a disc earlier this year but still pushed through Nationals.

“It was hard because I got really sore.”Despite the injury and doing her fi rst year

of NCEA Stephanie was chosen to be on the U15 touch team.

“This year I was hoping to make it and didn’t think I would but I did.

“I was pretty speechless.”She started playing touch three years ago

when her intermediate teacher encouraged her to play. In her second year of the game she made it to the NZ academy.

It is now her third year playing touch and she wants to continue it as long as she can.

The motivated Year 11 student has played rugby, touch, league and netball.

“I just like sports in general.”She says school comes fi rst and does her

homework during her lunch breaks.

“That’s my number one priority this year.”The tournament in October is no holiday

and will see her playing multiple games a day.

Stephanie’s touch has taken her family up and down the country and they are looking forward to the Australia trip.

She has to raise $3500 for the tournament but she defi nitely has the family backing to do it.

Her mother Rachel Dalley says they couldn’t be prouder of her.

“We all cried on the phone.” She says Stephanie has always been mo-

tivated and making the New Zealand team in just three seasons of touch proves that.

Rachel says she was amazed when Stephanie was picked to play in the team.

“Out of all those kids she has been chosen.

“Her father and I were just absolutely stoked.”

Stephanie says it is her coach Kia Hou-papa and her family who get her through.

“I couldn’t have got there without my family.”

‘Stoked’ to make NZ Team after injury

Stephanie Hoare has made it to the New Zealand U15 Touch team in just three seasons of playing the sport.

It was a heartracing game on Saturday when Wainuiomata won 30-20 against Norths.

Norths kicked off but it was Wainuiomata who scored the fi rst try to Faatau Mamea 5-0.

After a promising raid by Norths, Wainuio-mata counter attacked to score their second try to Frae Wilson. The conversion was successful 12-0. After another good serge Genisis Mamea scored a try to make it 17-0.

Norths were penalised after another Wai-nuiomata raid and Frae kicked the goal 20-0

Wainuiomata then let Norths have a good bit of time on attack producing a good try which was converted making the Half time score 20-7.

The second half started with Wainuiomata trying to give their supporters heart attacks, with what seemed to be an easy try to Norths 20-12 followed soon after with a penalty 20-15.

This woke the Wainuiomata team up and they put in a couple of good attacks. They fi nished with the best try of the match to Kane Gush 25-15.

It was followed by another good team try to Wainuiomata’s Teru Time on the right hand flank 30-15. Norths continued to come at them but Wainuiomata only let them in for one consolation try making the fi nal score 30-20.

Prizes were “In the Bag” at Wainuio-mata Tennis Club’s Prizegiving.

Saturday night was the pinnacle of the season for the Wainuiomata Tennis Club.

Prizegiving was held at the club-rooms with a massive turnout to enjoy the presentation of a year’s worth of trophies, a posh dinner and some extra prizes with a special version of “It’s in the Bag”.

President Toni Kane says over the season the club has enjoyed a resur-gence, with an increasing number of members participating in more than a dozen competitions throughout summer.

“Having more people wanting to play tennis has meant more people entering the competitions – even Juniors competition has been really entertaining, fi erce, and we’ve even had an upset or two.”

This year’s men’s club champion, Lance Keall, acknowledges that “the fi nal was made a bit easier because Alli (Allister McIntyre) had a bad day”.

The rivalry between the Lance and

Allister is fi erce with one or other of them being the men’s singles club champ for 12 out of the last 14 years. The women’s Champion was Tania Martin, who also represents the Club in a Wellington Regional Team.

The Club Member of the Year award was presented to President Toni Kane. Lance says “she goes above the call of duty and really goes go that extra mile for the good of the club, making a real difference this year.”

An idea of Toni’s was a highlight of Prize giving. “It’s in the Bag”, was hosted by special guest and MC for the evening, Stu Smith from The Breeze.

Toni Kane says having this fun ver-sion of the Selwyn Toogood classic meant other club members had an opportunity to win one of 10 prizes, including Interislander vouchers, free subs for the next year or even a booby prize. It was hilarious – and nerve-wracking.

Julie Day, the fi rst lucky contestant won a great prize with some help from the audience.

“I was so embarrassed; my mind just

went blank!” Stu Smith’s impersonation of Selwyn was faultless, and

“the tennis balls or the bag?” provided a relevant touch. Surprisingly, a couple of contestants chose the tennis

balls, despite them being used ones. Results highlights: Mixed doubles, Allister McIntyre

and Tania Martin; Women’s doubles, Wendy Paulik and

Jackie Austin, Men’s Doubles, Lance Keall and Allister McIntyre; Women’s singles, Tania Martin; Men’s singles, Lance Keall. Special awards: Best interclub performance (men), Yogi Rogers; Best interclub performance (women), Naea Albert; Best performance (men), Joe Easthope; Best performance (women), Dianne McEwan; Best all-round club member, Toni Kane.

Great win for Wainui Rugby

Last Saturday runners and walkers set out from the clubrooms in Richard Prouse Park, for the annual Novice and Presidents’ Trophy races, heading through bush tracks, up the river bank and back to the clubrooms via Moores Valley Road Hill.

The fastest women in the 7.522km handicap race for seniors was Georgina Cox-Gratton with a time of 36.07 minutes, with Jeff Culver the fastest man fi nishing in 27.57 minutes.

The fastest kids in the 3km race were Joel Carman for the boys, and Maria Cramp for the girls.

This is a handicap race, which means run-ners and walkers start at different times, based on last years race plus their current fi tness and racing levels.

The Presidents’ Trophy is won by the fi rst person home in the senior event with the Novice Trophy being taken by the fi rst person

across the line who has never won a trophy in the Club. Occasionally this is won by the same person.

With a lot more members this year, the handicappers had their work cut out for them at the fi nish line.

The idea is everyone crosses the fi nish line at the same time, and with 19 senior athletes doing this within fi ve minutes of each other, and most of the junior runners fi nishing within four minutes of each other, it made for very fast time-keeping and recording.

Placings are based on fi rst across the line, and times are actual times after the handicap time has been removed.
