By Rhiannon McConnellA Wainuiomata dog went bush for two and a half

weeks before being found thanks to an advert in the Wainuiomata News.

Owner Gabrielle Martin says it is wonderful to have four-year-old Aaron home.

“We fi nally have him home safe and sound just a bit skinnier.”

Aaron went missing on April 8 after Gabrielle’s partner opened the gates to let in his car.

She says she had already placed an ad online and put out fl yers before a friend suggested she advertise in the paper.

“That same day the paper came out I got a phone call.”

Gabrielle was called by a man who spotted Aaron, a pure bred Affenpincer, coming past his property every morning around 8:30.

She says Aaron was too fast for the man to catch and had been hiding in the bush.

“He came back with lots of prickles.” Aaron’s brother Scrappy is very happy to have

him home.“They keep each other company,” Gabrielle says. Aaron is now locked in the conservatory when the

gates are open to keep him from escaping.

Jemma says the name literally came to her in a dream.

“I started dreaming about it… so named it Dreamy Cup-cakes.”

She first started making cakes and cupcakes for her two daughters.

“I liked doing it so much that I carried on making.”

Jemma says she learns new techniques from Youtube vid-eos and with help from her Dad’s partner, who is a cooking teacher.

She is having her fi rst stall at the Mothers Market this weekend.

She originally approached

market organiser Deborah McIvor with the idea of hav-ing a stall to raise money for child cancer inspired by her friend who has a child with leukaemia.

“I thought, I could have a fundraiser at a market.”

Deborah came back and sug-gested they do a whole market with the focus of raising money for child cancer.

“I had tears in my eyes,” Jemma says.

Dreamy Cupcakes currently runs through a Facebook page and is booked through May.

Jemma makes the cakes and cupcakes at the Wainuiomata

High School kitchen but is looking for a registered kitchen to use long term.

“If anyone has a registered kitchen and is willing to help me get my foot in the door it would be a great opportunity to kick it off.”

Jemma, who has done a course in small business, has big dreams for Dreamy Cup-cakes, including starting her own shop.

When it comes to which is her best cake or cupcake Jemma says her personal favourite is her Banana Cake.

Wainuiomata residents have until May 17 to tell the council what they think of the Draft Annual Plan for the 2013/14 year. Part of the plan is the Draft Urban Growth Strategy which proposes a new access road through to NaeNae and a housing development of 2000 homes in the Upper Fitzherbert and Wise Street area. Council is holding a public meeting in Petone on Thursday May 9 so people can learn about what the draft strategy means for the community. The meeting will be held at the Thumbs UP Hall, 5 Elizabeth St, Petone, from 7pm to 9pm.Councillors and council sta will also be available to talk to residents about the growth strategy outside Camera House at West eld Queensgate through the week of May 6.

Labour Maori a airs spokesman and Ikaroa-Rawhiti MP Parekura Horomia has died after being ill for some time. A statement issued by his family says Parekura, 62, died at 4:30 Monday afternoon surrounded by family at his Mangatuna home. The funeral will be held on Friday and all 34 MPs are expected to attend.

Residents can have sayBy Rhiannon McConnellA Wainuiomata man has

created an engine which runs completely off scrap wood.

Steve Tetlow hopes to get his wood run engine to the point where he can run his truck off it saving the environment as well as his wallet.

But for now he has started with a welding machine.

The machine runs com-pletely on bits of old wood.

“This machine just happens to be, probably, the only wood powered arc welder in the world… well it’s the only one on YouTube.”

Steve’s property has never been on the national grid so he has always had to create his own electricity.

He relies on windmills and solar panels but in winter he needs a little extra, which is where the wood-run engine comes in.

“It serves the all important role of maintaining the elec-trical luxury of which I have become so accustomed.”

He says apart from the money the engine saves in electricity it is also carbon neutral.

“When it’s running it is absolutely clean, there is no smoke.”

The engine uses 1.2 Kilo-grams of wood per hour.

It produces carbon dioxide and water vapour as its exhaust and ash as a by product. Steve has found a way to use that too.

“You can grow the next generation of carrots.”

Steve stumbled across de-signs for wood run engines on the internet a few years ago. “I happened to discover it by accident.”

Since then it has kept him awake at night reading.

Steve says to be able to grow your own fuel is wonderful.

“Considering what petrol costs these days it’s worth looking into the alternatives.”

He says for a country like New Zealand it is a great idea because of all the natural resource available.

“This one runs on scrap wood of which there is a great abundance. Folks are literally dying to give it away otherwise they waste money on tip fees.”

Even though the idea of a wood run engine excites him he does not want to overuse

natural resources. “It’s a resource and like all resources

it has fi nite proportions therefore it has to be used with respect.”

Steve hopes to get his wood run engine to the point where it can run his truck and take it to public events.

“It’s a demonstration piece for public awareness because I can pretty well guarantee that 99% of the population

is currently unaware of this resource.”He is developing the engine more

before trying it in the truck because if it is not confi gured right it could wreck his engine.

“I have unfortunately committed that crime and have had to strip that engine three times.”

Steve says anyone curious can down-load plans for wood-run engines from

By Rhiannon McConnellWhen someone in Wainuiomata needs

a Justice of Peace many turn to Clive at Clives Chemist but the JP Associa-tion is looking for more volunteers in Wainuiomata to relieve Clive a little bit.

President of the Hutt Valley and Dis-tricts JP Association Rhys Morris says Clive has been getting a few too many people coming to see him for JP work.

“It’s got to the stage where it is affecting his business.”

Rhys says they are setting up a JP ser-vice centre in the Wainuiomata Library. Other libraries have already tried the idea and found it very successful.

“They have been very popular.”

The service station would be open dur-ing certain hours for people to get their documents looked at by a JP.

“That’s currently being established.” Rhys says they are looking for people

with no criminal conviction and who are willing to give a little bit of their time.

“Just ordinary people… who are pre-pared to give a little of their time to do this work.”

He says it is a great way to help in the community.

There is a five week training pro-gramme through the Ministry of Justice.

He says they are mainly looking for people between the ages of 35-55 but take people of all ages.

“We do have an aging population within out JP population.

“We are also looking for a younger generation.”

Rhys says there is no academic require-ment for JPs, they just need a good degree of common sense.

“Just good decent folk really, that’s what we are looking for.”

He says they need to be committed to a few training sessions a year.

“The law is changing all the time.“Not all of them affect JPs but a lot of

them do.” For more information on becoming a

Dear Ed,On Thursday 24th

April I had a fall on the pavement ouside the Post Offi ce entrance to the Wainuiomata Mall. I wish to thank all the many people who came to my aid.

A lady put her jacket around me, a man made sure I was being seen to, The Warehouse put a blanket around me and others showed their concern and helped.

The friend who I was

helping by taking her shopping, who was very concerned for me,was also given a seat to sit on while we waited for an ambulance.

I am pleased to report that there were no bro-ken bones, just cuts and bruises. Its very warm-ing to see that com-munity spirit is alive and well in Wainuiomata.

A big thank you again,

Heather Emsley

Thankful for help Second supermaket

‘Z’ gave back

Dear Ed,I have several concerns regarding

the plans to subdivide and develop the lifestyle properties on Upper Fitzherbert Rd.

In a recent report on Radio New Zealand, our mayor said the council would be ‘waiving development costs and resource consents’.

In effect this means that all Lower Hutt rate payers, including those whose properties are involved, are paying the developers to make money

for themselves. Are developers who are subdividing

properties in other areas of Wainuio-mata, getting those same subsidies? I suspect not.

The Wainuiomata Hill road has only rarely been closed. Barring traffi c accidents, I can think of only a few instances. In the cases of severe weather or earthquake, it is unlikely that one access road only would be affected.

Upper Fitzherbert Rd is used ex-

tensively by walkers and families. For many children, its accessibility means they are able to see farm ani-mals at close range, which may not otherwise be possible.

I supported Ray Wallace in his bid to become mayor as I thought Wainuiomata could benefi t. However my faith in him and his offsiders no longer remains.

Louise WilliamsWainuiomata

Concerns about Upper Fitzherbert Road

Lets keep the RSA open

Dear Ed, With regards to last

week’s public opinion, I think it would be highly benefi cial for Wainuio-mata to open a second supermarket.

It would make it more competitive, as well as provide more of an op-tion for the products we can purchase.

I also fi nd I have to wait a long time in the lines at the current supermarket, so having another super-market would distribute

the population of Wainui and help with that.

Instead of putting mon-ey into the accessway, why doesn’t the council put money towards a new supermarket?

I think if you asked more people in Wainui, the majority of them would be in favour of having another super-market.

Super Shopper

Dear Ed, Well done Z! It is so

great to see what they have given our very own Wainuiomata Community.

Thank you Ras Singh for being a part of the Good in the Hood programme.

The four groups that re-ceived the money deserve

it; they do a wonderful thing in our town.

It was a programme that many people got a chance to be involved in, and felt like they were a part of.

What a fantastic way to give back.

Z Lover

Dear Ed, I am happy to hear that the RSA is

planning to stay open. How terrible it would have been for it to close.

The RSA is both tradition and an icon, and to have RSA Clubs slowly disappear around the county would be an awful refl ection of the honour we give to our servicemen.

I wonder how the RSA began to

struggle in the fi rst place, however it is good to see that RSA President, Bart Bartlett, is doing his best to work through it.

To help them through this time, I think more people should be making an effort to go the bar, and to go to the entertainment evenings the RSA provide. It is fantastic that the com-munity is stepping up and helping

them with fundraising ideas, as well as developing their marketing.

It is so important that we continue to honour those who have served and those who are continuing to serve.

Let’s all support the RSA while they pay off their debt, and keep the club open.

The Wainuiomata com-munity may get a new central indoor pool as part of the council’s annual plan.

Mayor Ray Wallace says they have included the new pool in the plan so that in 15 years if the community wants a new pool there will be money available.

“We are future proofing that by putting money aside in the budget,”

He says they are thinking long term and the need for an indoor pool may be greater or less in the plans time period.

He says they will continue to maintain the current pool at a good condition but be-cause of the age and design of the pool it would not be possible to put a roof on it.

“It’s a great pool, it’s very popular but in 15 years time

it may be coming to the end of its life.”

The Wainuiomata outdoor pool is popular among locals and people from across the Wellington region.

“It is one of the most popu-lar pools in the region.”

But the mayor says pool experts have suggested, in the future, it would be a good idea to have an indoor pool next to the central shopping centre.

Twelve years ago the coun-cil approached the com-munity to see if they wanted to put a cover on the current pool which was rejected by the community.

The mayor says the idea will be put to the community.

“Between now and then we would be discussing with the community whether they want a 52 week a year pool,” he says.

Money set aside for new pool

By Liam HyslopEmily Harris’ dream of be-

coming a costume designer for Weta Workshop is a step closer thanks to the Wainuiomata Rotary Club.

The Massey University fash-ion student from Wainuiomata received a $1000 scholarship last week to help assist with costs in her fi rst year of study.

She says it will help fi nan-cially as she will not have to add more money to her loan.

“It will defi nitely help as we have a lot of supplies and stuff to buy.”

The scholarship was one of three grants awarded by the Rotary Club to Wainuiomata community members.

Wainuiomata High School was given $750 to help send students to the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuit Centre (OPC).

Head of Physical Education Kath McGuinness says the money will help to promote positive behaviour in the school.

“The students who go will be selected based on our Positive Behaviour for Learning pro-gramme which means they will have to display positive values in order to earn a spot.

“It’s hoped this will make kids want to aspire to those values so they can go as well.”

The grant will help send two of the 20 students that the High school wants to send this year.

Konini Primary School was gifted $500 to help subsidise classes from a visiting artist.

No school representative was in attendance to collect the prize but Rotary Club president Dawn Otter says it will halve the money the kids have to pay for the special class from $4 to $2.

She says all of the grants are an important way for the Club to give back to the community.

“We want to let Wainuiomata know that there are a lot of things we do and people we give to.

“It’s not just about the people we help with these grants, but about the wider community as well.”

Holiday programme got to try the BGI ropes course for free last week.

Team leader Dave Adams says the ropes course gives kids a sense of teamwork.

“It helps them push past their sense of safety and gives them a sense of confi dence.”

The ropes course is one of the oldest in New Zealand and was built in the mid 1990’s.

Dave says some of the kids have been a bit nervous but they push past it to overcome it.

Programme coordinator Rose Morris says the pro-gramme has been a massisve success.

“We have had so many kids, it’s awesome.”

The Sports Break Holiday programme focuses on get-ting kids active and enjoying their holidays.

It is run by the Wellington Boys and Girls institute and

By Rhiannon McConnell Anyone curious to see inside

the old Coast Road Church will have their chance at the upcoming Autumn Festivel.

Committee member Colleen Hira says the day will involve lots of locals and lots of stalls.

“It’s going to be like an old fash-ioned church fair type of thing.”

The Coast Road Church had an open day in January but previous to that it was not open since the 50s.

“It’s another opportunity to let people come in and see how beauti-ful it is in here,” Colleen says.

She says many people have wan-dered past the church their whole

lives and never seen inside. “It’s a chance for people to have

a look and for us to raise funds.” Colleen says they spent all of last

year renovating the church but there is still more to do.

“There’s a lot still to be done and we need a lot of money.”

One of the things which makes the church special are the large windows that are not common in old churches.

The Autumn Festival is based on the Harvest Festivals the church use to have every March or April when it was running.

There will be an old-fashioned raffl e wheel, an afternoon teas stall,

a cake stall and many other treats for festival goers.

Colleen says everyone who has seen the church loves what has been done.

The Church’s big event for the year will come in November when the it turns 150 years old.

“A lot of planning has to go into that,” says Colleen.

If it rains on the day of the Au-tumn Festival, it will be held in the Wainuiomata Primary School Hall.

It will be held on Saturday May 11 from 10-2pm. Applications from stall holders are welcomed. Contact Joyce on [email protected] or Christine on 564 8016

By Rhiannon McConnellGrey Power had lower numbers

than usual at this months meeting but despite that, President Ken Salmon says their membership is growing.

Ken says their numbers are growing but they need a new secretary at next months AGM to be able to keep running.

“We need more committee members.”

The meeting kicked off with discussion about the popular topic of having a retirement village in Wainuiomata.

“We want some cheaper units so that people in average houses in Wainuiomata can afford to down-size and move into a cheaper unit,” Ken says.

He encouraged people to put submissions in.

“This is a necessary thing.”Another subject of interest was

whether councils in the Wel-lington region should become a super city.

They took a vote, of which the majority of the room was against becoming a super city.

There was hot discussion about where to have the Midwinter Lunch.

Last year they were very pleased with the Working Men’s Club in Petone but they do feel loyalty to the Wainuiomata RSA.

The decision was made to at least offer it the Wainuiomata RSA fi rst.

Wainuiomata Community Board member Karl Dixon gave a thoughtful speech about what has changed in the community over the years.

He talked about how people re-late, how family spend their time and even the physical community has changed.

One thing he mentioned was using a local Facebook page to engage and make announce-ments.

The next Grey Power meeting will be held at the Wainuiomata RSA on May 22 and will be the Annual General Meeting fol-lowed by Errol Baird, My experi-ences abroad.

The Wainuiomata Museum is getting a paint job.

Wainuiomata Historical Mu-seum Society member Iris Fraser says they have to be careful about removing the paint because the original paint was lead and can be dangerous.

“There have been so many coats of paint on it; it has to be stripped to the original.”

The front half of the museum

will be painted now while the back will be painted next year when they replace the wooden boards.

“Things have got to be done right,” Iris says.

The museum will be painted the same colour as Wainuiomata Primary School to keep uniform-ity between the buildings.

Submissions need now for retirement village

The Hutt City’s older residents will be treated to a free variety concert later this month.

The successful community event, which the Hutt City Council sponsors and helps or-ganise, is in its 21st year and will take place on Sunday May 19.

Popular sportscaster Keith Quinn will be the MC.

Performing at the concert will be: The Valley Stompers, pianist Michal Cihelka, Jeanette Mullins School of Dance, Hutt City Musical Theatre, and Wel-lington City Chorus Women’s Barbershop chorus.

Mayor Ray Wallace says the Council values the contribution

that older residents make to the Hutt city.

“This concert is a thank you and opportunity for Council to provide an afternoon of entertainment with something for everyone.”

The concert will be on Sunday May 19 from 2pm to 4.30pm at the Horticultural Hall.

The concert is free but dona-tions will be accepted for the Te Omanga Hospice. Family and friends are also welcome.

Wainuiomata residents who want a retirement village need to put their submissions in.

Mayor Ray Wallace said at the Wainuiomata Bussi-ness Breakfast last Friday.

“This is Wainuiomata’s one and only chance of getting a retirement home.”

In order for the retirement village to be built four hectares of Hugh Sinclair Park need to have their reserve status revoked. This involves a submission process and the Minister of Conservation will make a decision by the end of it.

The mayor says the ma-jority of submissions being received are negative be-cause people are concerned about losing the place they play Sunday cricket.

He says no one will lose out by this.

“We can accommodate them very well in other areas.”

He says the area is not used very often.

It is now up to the com-munity to make their voice heard on the matter.

“We have done as much as we can; it’s now up to the community,” the mayor says.

A retirement village

would bring more jobs to Wainuiuomata and provide a place for the elderly to live instead of having to move over the hill.

Hutt South MP Trevor Mallard says the oppor-tunity for older people to move into the retirement home will also free up homes for more families to move into Wainuiomata.

“For some businesses it will make the difference between them surviving or not,” he says.

Councillor Margaret Wil-lard spoke about what can be done in our Community to attract more people.

“We need to do more and we have the opportunities to do more.”

Development Wainuio-mata run a business break-fast every month.

Anyone interested in business is invited.

Retirement village sub-missions can be sent to [email protected] .nz or to Bruce Hodgins, Hutt City Coun-cil, Private Bag 31-912, Lower Hutt 5040. Please clearly include your contact details in the submission. Submissions close on May 31. Councillor Margaret Willard was the speaker at

10 Wednesday May 1, 2013 Out & About

By Rhiannon McConnellAnzac day was remembered by

many in Wainuiomata despite the uncertain weather.

RSA president Bart Bartlett says they were very happy with how the day turned out.

“We had great crowds.“Everybody commented on how

well it went.”The dawn parade was attended

by a large number of people and Bart says there were over a hun-dred people at the RSA breakfast

that followed. The 11am ceremony was moved

into the Wainuiomata Community Centre because of the weather.

“The hall was full, lots and lots of young people there.”

While the march from BP to

the Community Centre went ahead, the parade afterwards was cancelled.

Bart says the large crowds give him hope for the future.

Roving photographer Daryl New was there.

5 Minutes WithCHIEF FIRE OFFICER DAVE SMITH

By Rhiannon McConnellWainuiomata’s fi rst and only mayor and his

wife have just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.

Harry and Irene Martin have been through a lot together in their lifetime including hosting Prince Charles and Diana when they visited Wellington in 1983.

Harry says their marriage has succeeded through hard work and always needing each other.

“We depended on one another, we needed one another.”

Harry says that marriage takes work. “Marry the right person fi rst and then decide

to stay married.”Irene also believes it is about sharing interests. The couple met when they were both invited

to dinner in June of 1946 by mutual friends. “They were trying to match make,” says Harry. He says he walked Irene down to the tram

stop on Courtenay Place and the rest is history. “It just went on from there.”Harry, who was in the Air Force and Irene

were married on April 12, 1947.

“We were really only getting engaged but circumstances bought it forward.”

A week or two before getting married they visited Wainuiomata for the fi rst time.

“We fell in love with the place.”They honeymooned in Christchurch before

moving to Johannesburg. “We loved Africa, we just loved it.”Harry and Irene moved back to New Zealand

for their three daughters to go to school. They bought a section in Wainuiomata and

built a house which was fi nished in 1955. Harry says they have had a good life together

living in Wainuiomata. “We both got really involved in Wainuiomata.” They now have grand-children and great

grand-children. Harry was chairman of Wainuiomata for

eleven years and mayor from 1988-89. Irene says they have seen a lot of things change

in their lifetime.“Life is so different.”But one thing stays the same; a good marriage

takes work and needing each other.

Over sixty years of marriage

Harry and Irene Martin have been married for 66 years.

Ken and Jean Salmon have been married 60 years this month.

Chief Fire O cer, Dave Smith has been in the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade for 32 Years.

By Rhiannon McConnellKen and Jean Salmon have made it

through 60 years by learning to be tolerant and sticking to it.

Ken says marriage is about give and take and working as a team.

“For anyone to say they don’t have ups and downs in a married life I think they would be lying.”

Ken says it is about taking the good and the bad and making it work.

“The more you put in the more you get out.”

Jean says she learnt a lot about being tolerant.

“I had to learn to be more tolerant… to see where the other half is coming from.”

She says love helped them stay to-gether.

Ken and Jean met in 1949 when Jean was 17 and Ken was 19.

Jean was on holiday with a friend. Jean and her friend were talking to a farmer when they noticed Ken walking across the fi eld.

“We saw this lovely handsome young man walking across the fi eld.”

Ken, who was on leave from the army, thought Jean was very nice and started writing to her since they lived in dif-ferent places. He jokes he was worried about being left on the shelf.

Ken was originally posted at the Uni-versity of Manchester but then moved camps.

Jean says her mother thought she was seeing two men when letters arrived from different addresses.

Jean studies in London and Ken would sneak away from army sports afternoons to see her.

“I would sneak off, go to London and meet Jean. Then go back at night,” Ken says.

They were married April 14, 1953. The army gave Ken three days off so they went to Devon for a quick honeymoon.

In June Ken was sent to Kenya and Jean followed in February.

Their fi rst son was born there. In 1955 they moved back to England

where Ken left the army and became a reserve.

However in 1956 he was called back to serve in Molta from August to December.

In 1957 their daughter was born and Ken saw a NZ army advert for trades-men.

A year later they took a boat to New Zealand which took six weeks.

They lived in Ngaruawahia, Wairuru then Trentham before buying a home in Wainuiomata. They have lived here for 39 years now.

Ken says even if they won a lot of money they would live there.

“I don’t think we would go anywhere.”Ken and Jean have three children.

They are now grandparents and great-grandparents.

His advice to younger couple is, stick with it.

“If you are having bad times they can only get better, be a bit tolerant. Be willing to have shared interests and joint interests.”

Love beyond the golden anniversary

Update from the Harriers Club

Last Saturday was the first inter-club race of the 2013 sea-son, with Wainuiomata Harriers’ taking on teams from the rest of Wellington in the annual Shaw Baton Relay.

The relay is usually the fi rst race held every year, and takes place at Battle Hill on Paekaka-riki Hill Road.

Run over rugged country including hills, water jumps, fences and plenty of other “natu-ral” obstacles, the race is a fun way to start the season and burn off the summer cobwebs.

The day was pretty windy, and the ground dry and hard which

meant a lot of times were faster than expected.

Wainuiomata Harriers fi elded four teams including a Senior Women, Senior Men, Junior Girls and Junior Boys.

An outstanding performance was made by Maria Cramp who ran the fi rst leg for the Senior Women as well as fi lling in for the Junior Girls team. Maria, 11, ran the 4th fastest time of all the Wainuiomata athletes with 8.53 minutes for the 2km course.

We also had a great turnout with fi ve under 9’s competing in the open 1km race.

Full results of the relay can be found on our website: www.sportsground.co.nz/wainuio-

mataaahcThe fi rst club race of the season

the previous week, was the Wayne Tucker Memorial Races held at Rimutaka Forest Park.

Under 14 boys and girls ran a 2km lap, while all other runners and walkers did a 4km lap which took in the Orongorongo track, Catchpool track and Nature Trail.

Seniors and Masters did two laps of this.

It was a very close race for the Junior Boys with Joel just out-running Michael by 5 seconds. Full results can be found on our website.

14 boys 2km: 1st Joel Carman 10.02 minutes Senior Women 4km: 1st Rebekah Richardson 28.22 minutes; Open Men 8km: 1st Paul Richardson 38.07 minutes

After a long dry summer, Wainuio-mata Croquet Club ended the season last Saturday with a prize-giving presented by club Patron Mayor Ray Wallace.

Club President Pam Truscott says they had a wonderful day.

“It was a lovely day that celebrated a really long and successful sum-mer.”

She says it was great to celebrate to players and the success they have had.

“We have got some brilliant players in the club.”

Pam says she cannot remember a summer when they have played so many club days and had such beauti-ful weather.

She says they have been very successful in gaining new members this season.

The club continues to be active during winter most Wednesdays. For details contact Joyce Jones 970 8990 or Margaret Englebretsen 971 8441.

Logan Stoupe and Gemma Warrender in the Under 12 relays.

It was a successful Saturday for the Wainuiomata AFC mens football team when they won against the Mirimar Rangers.

The Wainuiomata AFC mens 1st team won 1-0.

Coach Stephen Murphy says it was a great day and the pitch was perfect at Dave Farrington park.

“We managed to settle very early and caused Miramar a few problems in the fi rst half.”

Stephen says Miramar’s goal keeper had some great defending and managed to keep the game 0-0 early on.

“We won a corner and Phil Pennell put in a great ball which, for 2nd

week running saw Ryan Harvey at the back post to score and put us 1-0 up going into half time.”

Stephan says Miramar came out with a new attitude in the 2nd half and put a lot of pressure on the Wainuiomata team.

“Our work ethic and great goal-keeping and defending managed to keep it 0-0 for the half.”

He says their work ethic, goalkeep-ing and defending managed to stop Miramar from scoring in the second half.

“We managed to see the game out and earn our fi rst win over Miramar for quite some time. A great win.”

By Liam HyslopWainuiomata Rugby Club made

the most of a busy week of rugby to propel them back into Jubilee Cup qualifi cation contention.

They now lie eighth on the lad-der, just four points behind Old Boys-University in sixth, after two wins in four days.

They withstood a late fi ght-back from Petone on Anzac Day to win 36-29, with Jason Love grabbing a double.

On Sunday they dispatched of competition easy-beats Rimutaka 64-nil, with Love bagging a hat-trick and lock Shahn Eru dotting down twice.

This Saturday they face a tough test away to last year’s Jubilee Cup winner’s Marist St Pats, al-though MSP have been struggling for form this season and currently lie in seventh place, three points clear of Wainuiomata.

By Liam HyslopWainuiomata may have just

unearthed its next sporting star and he is only 10-years-old.

Ezekiel Stallworth has been selected for the New Zealand Basketball Academy (NZBA) under-13 squad and will be the youngest player in the team when they travel to Las Vegas for a tournament against American teams in July.

He is also the North Island 100 and 200-metre sprint champ as well as the leading try scorer for his rugby team with six tries in two games – even though he plays lock.

Other teams are surprised at how fast he is, as he is also the tallest player at fi ve foot three inches.

Ezekiel says he enjoys playing all sports, but his preference at the moment is basketball.

“I like basketball a lot.“But I would play rugby in

Japan because they pay the most money.”

If it did not work out in Japan then he also dreams of playing in the NBA or being like Jamaican

sprinters Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.

Former Wellington College sprint coach Allen Yip, who has been working with Ezekiel on his sprinting, was cautious to place too much expectation on his young shoulders.

“It is hard to tell how good he could be because he is so young.

“It could be because he is bigger than the other kids or that he has natural talent.”

But Yip, who has more than 15 years experience coaching sprint-ers, says Ezekiel has the attitude to be able to succeed in any sport.

“He is not afraid of hard work and shows up to trainings with great enthusiasm to improve.

“With that attitude and the right guidance the world is his oyster for whatever sport he chooses.”

His father, NZBA coach Terry Stallworth, says the basketball tournament is an important opportunity for Ezekiel, if he chooses to play basketball in the future.

“There are University scouts who come and watch and if they like a couple of guys they put

RIGHT: Wainuiomata’s Frae Wilson touches down for his try.

them on the radar.“Then they will watch them

all the way through and may offer a scholarship.

“But he has a lot of [sporting] choices open at the moment so we will let him choose.”
