Wainui Weather Today 15-19 Thursday 14-20 Friday 14-20 Saturday 15-17
By Rhiannon McConnell The annual Santa Parade was a
success despite the wind and rain, organiser Joy Jones says.
Joy says they decided not to postpone the event because the markets were on the same day and the entrants were keen for it to go ahead.
She says it was a wonderful day and people still came out, despite the drizzle.

more than one fl oat.“The fl oats this year were absolutely spec-

went. “It was a successful parade.” However, she has one hope for the next parade. “Hopefully next year the weather will be

By Rhiannon McConnellA local dog and his owner have re-
ceived the 1000th Canine Good Citizen award in New Zealand.
Irma Harris and her dog Comet re-ceived the qualifi er award after complet-ing the Eukanuba Canine Good Citizen Test training.
Irma says she is delighted. “It felt fantastic to gain the qualifi cation
after all the training.”Another member of the Wainuiomata
Dog Training Club, Maree Ryan and her dog Matrix, also achieved a Canine Good Citizen award.
Both dogs and their owners qualifi ed at their fi rst attempt.
Comet is an eight-year-old English Springer Spaniel/Bearded Collie cross, while Matrix is a 20-month-old German Shepherd and is Maree’s fi rst dog.
The Canine Good Citizen Test is a certifi cation program that tests dogs in simulated everyday situations.
“It identifi es and rewards dogs that have the training and demeanour to be reliable family members as well as good-standing community members,” Irma says.
She says the purpose of the test is to ensure that a dog can be a respected member of the community.
Irma says the training is fun and she has es-tablished a closer bond with Comet during it.
Comet has also previously won the National competition for Paws N Music.
Irma’s biggest fear was that Comet might start performing some of his Paws N Music tricks during the test.
She has been a member of the Wainuio-
mata Dog Training Club since she moved to Wainuiomata in 1978, while Maree joined six months ago.
The two pairs are now training to gain the higher levels of Canine Good Citizen test.
Wainuiomata Dog Training Club runs classes on Monday evening at the end of Burden Avenue, Wainuiomata.

Transpacific Waste Management is getting ready to install more glass recycling bins around the city as residents get behind a drive to lift recycling fi gures.Seaview branch manager Des Fell says that the response was initially slow but now the bins are so heavily used that a truck needs to make two runs a day, seven days a week, to keep pace. Four more bins are under construction.

Private drainage plans are now avail-able online for free.Council’s Helen Oram, Divisional Manager Environmental Consents, says the service is the latest in a series designed to make it easier for custom-ers to obtain local private property information.“Private drainage plans can help iden-tify where the drains on a particular property are and are essential prior to starting any drainage work.”

By Rhiannon McConnellAfter success at other stores,
Wainuiomata McDonalds has launched Georgie Pie months earlier than originally planned.
Restaurant owner Chris Boon says they were not going to bring the iconic brand to Wai-nuiomata until next year but after the success at his other stores he decided to bring the date forward.
“They have been doing very well.
“The customers are loving it.”From last month Wainuio-
mata McDonalds have been offering customers the chance to relive the Georgie Pie ex-perience.
The pies have not been sold since the 1990’s but many still
have fond memories. Chris says he has good mem-
ories of Gerogie Pie and is very happy to be offering them at his restaurant.
“It’s still the same pie.“To have it under our um-
brella is fantastic.”Currently fans can try the
steak mince ‘n’ cheese pies, but Chris says they are rolling out a new fl avour in February - chicken and vege.
“I enjoy giving back to the community,” Chris says.
The pie follows the exact recipe of the original pies, except the MSG has been removed.
All stores nationwide are expected to stock the pies by the middle of next year.
Early launch for Georgie Pie
Chris Boon brought the release date of the Georgie Pie forward.
By Rhiannon McConnellLast year Azalea Minarapa, 16, only
went to school a few times a week, but this year she has achieved almost 100 percent attendance and will be returning to mainstream education next year.
Azalea was one of a group of stu-dents who accepted awards at the Rangatahi Learning Centre prize giving last Friday.
Azalea was awarded the Board of Trustees Aspire Shield, the Lyn Prov-ost Award for most outstanding female student, the highest attendance shield, and the values and attitude award.
She received more awards than had ever been presented to one student at the centre.
The Year 12 student says last year she had no dreams or ambition.
“I wasn’t bothered.“I didn’t really worry about my
education then.”However, after starting at the learn-
ing centre she discovered a love for tourism and that brought up the rest of her grades.
“I got interested in my education.”
Aiming for the skyAzalea now has a dream to be
a fl ight attendant. “I like fl ying and I like travel-
ling.” Next year Azalea will be re-
turning to Wainuiomata High School to fi nish her education.
Among other notable award winners were Jadon O’Kane-Jones who won the Commu-nity Cup and Tumanako White-Rolleston who won top Year 10 student.
Head teacher Trish Morgan says she was very proud of the success of all the students.
“I think it’s been an exceptional year.”
She says it is wonderful to see young people change the direc-tion of their lives.
“That’s what I come to work for.”
Auditor-General Lyn Provost and Hutt City Mayor Ray Wal-lace were among the dignitaries who attended.

Students from the Rangatahi Learning Centre ended the year with a prizegiving last Friday.

By Rhiannon McConnellSpinal injuries lead to a born and breed Wainuio-
mata musician taking up Bikram Yoga and being placing number two in Australia.
Thirty-four year old Cameron Pickford recently competed in the Queensland Regional Yoga Asana Championships where he placed number one in
Queensland. He will now go on to represent
Queensland in the 2014 National Yoga Asana championships in Melbourne in February.
“The sense of accomplishment is very moving. I love the fact that I haven’t even scratched the surface of what’s possible with competing and my practice.
“There’s still so much more I know I’m capable of,” the Bikram Yoga instructor says.
Cameron grew up in Wainuiomata but moved to Brisbane fi fteen years ago where he has lived since.
He began practicing Bikram Yoga three years ago after suffering from scholiosis, an unnatural curvature of the spine, for several years.
He says he was attracted to Bikram Yoga because he had tried everything and spent thousands of dollars to heal his back.
His condition had forced him to give up his profession as a musician and he
lived with constant pain. Within a year of practicing Bikram Yoga regularly, an MRI scan confi rmed he was free from all symptoms.
“My fi rst class I could tell this Yoga works. The fi rst breathing exercise my neck felt relief immediately.”
Cameron says he hopes to become a world yoga champion and an Olympic yoga champion, if the sport gets recog-nised as an offi cial Olympic sport.
Thirty-one competitors performed at the Queensland Regional Yoga Asana Championships, which were held in Southbank Convention on October 27.
The top three competitors placed in the male and female divisions of the Queensland Regional Yoga Asana Championships will compete at the 2014 Australian National Yoga Asana Championships in Melbourne on Febru-ary 9, 2014.
The 2014 International Yoga Asana Championships will be held in London in Summer 2014.
Spinal injury prompted national success

By Rhiannon McConnell Four men have returned to work after com-
pleting the Tama Tu Tama Ora Maori Mans development group one year proragmme.
Programme co-facilitator Reo Va’a says they have seen amazing results.
“It’s been huge since these guys haven’t actually held a job for fi ve to 20 years.”
The programme, which started in 2011, aims to confront and deal with family violence.
“It is going really well,” Reo says. Twenty men graduated on Friday at a
ceremony that included their families. Reo says they had men from different
gangs sit in the same room together and put their differences aside for the sake of their families.
“All that [gang affi liation] is left at the front door.”
Families heard testimonies from the men at the graduation.
But Reo says the real tests begin now. “The journey for them starts now.”He says they will not be perfect but now
they have tools and safety plans to cope. Another success of the programme are
three families that have been taken off the
Child Youth and Family list. Reo says that one of his highlights was
seeing a father and son complete the programme together (pictured above with their family).
Reo says there is a big cultural component to the programme and they include haka and karakia.
The programme was run by Kokiri Marae and co-facilitated by Wayne Glen.

Our readers have their say.
Dear Ed,The first Wainuiomata
Community Board meet-ing for this triennium was held on Wednesday, No-vember 27.
Congratulations to Karl Dickson, who was elected as Chair and Terry Stall-worth as Deputy Chair. I think it is important that members of the constitu-ency are present and in-volved.
People have time to speak to items on the agenda within a three-minute timeframe. This was my fi rst time at a community board meeting and I was satisfi ed with the decisions that were made.
I have a lot of fond mem-ories at the closed Wood Hatton Primary School. I am quite upset with the state of the grounds.
All the classrooms are
defaced and the swimming pool building has been broken into. Perhaps squat-ters are taking advantage of this unoccupied wasteland.
I hope the owners do something about it as it devalues the area.
It could have been used as a public park or housing developments.
Regards, Gabriel Tupo

Letters to the editorDisappointed at Wood Hatton groundsDear Ed, It was great to have the Santa
Parade on the weekend. Even though the weather was
bad, it fi nally got me into the Christmas spirit.
Thank you to the organis-ers for going ahead with the parade, it brought some much needed joy and festivity to the community.

A year in review...Firstly congratulations to the new Community Board who have been sworn in and had their fi rst meeting together. Congratulations to new Board chairman Karl Dickson and new Board members Rima Workman, Josh Briggs and Richard Sinnott.
They are now joined by Councillors Margaret Willard and Campbell Barry. I believe it will be exciting times ahead for the new Board.
I wish to acknowledge to the work past Chairman Terry Stallworth who remains on the board and will continue to serve the community as deputy chair.
As Mayor, I am keen to see the Community Board undertake a real leadership role to engage with local residents and talk about the community’s vision for the future which I believe is very bright.
One area for the Community Board to take a lead in is emergency management and community preparedness. The earthquakes earlier this year were clearly a wake up call for us all.
We all need to ensure we are prepared for such events and that you have plans in place to ensure your families safety.
Well done to Wainuiomata Rotary and all the volunteers who helped make the parade a great day along with the community markets. Despite the weather everyone had a great time.
As the year draws to an end it is always a great time for refl ection. It has been a good year for Wainuiomata but we have certainly had our challenges as a community. It is the “strong community spirit” that brings us through those challenges.
Next year is going to be an exciting year for Wainuiomata so watch this space.
I wish your and your family the blessing of the festive season and all the very best for 2014.
Take care, be kind to each other.

By Dawn McKinleyMerry Christmas and a Happy New Year
to you all from Wainuiomata Neighbourhood Support.
As Christmas nears, take care and reduce the risk of being burgled by setting up or join-ing a Neighbourhood Support Group in your area and advertising the fact by displaying Neighbourhood Support signs and stickers.
Make sure doors, windows and other entry and exit points from your house have good quality, effective catches and locks - deadlocks if possible. Get into the habit of always using these locks.
Always lock doors and windows at night, if you’re out in the garden or going out or away. Don’t leave a door key hidden outside - burglars know all the places to look. Keep garden sheds and garages secure and lock away tools and ladders.
Have an alarm system professionally installed and consider having it monitored by a reputable security company. Install sensor lights on access paths or around main external doors. Install a ‘peep-hole’ in a front door so you know who’s visiting you.
Trim trees or remove shrubbery which might ‘hide’ a burglar’s activity.
Get to know your neighbours and develop plans to deal with problems or suspicious activity. Exchanging phone numbers or emergency contact details is a good start.
If you’re going away, neighbours can collect your mail or newspaper and make your place look occupied, for example by turning on lights, parking a vehicle in your driveway,
A message from your Neighbourhood Support Co-ordinator Dawn McKinley
Be aware of buglers this Christmas
hanging washing on your line or mowing lawns.
Take photographs of jewellery and record serial numbers of tools and electronic items.
Consider placing “Beware of Dog” signs on gates or fences.
If you have an answer phone, don’t record a message that suggests you’re out or alone.
Police are always interested in suspicious activity. Don’t hesitate to call Police to report something out of the ordinary and, if you see a crime being committed, call 111.
For more information contact your Neigh-bourhood Support Coordinator, Dawn McKinley by calling into the police station Monday-Friday between 9am-1pm or call me on 027 777 3321.

The Wainuiomata Stroke Club fi nished an unsettled year with a celebration last Thursday.
Club president Christine John-ston says the year has had its ups and downs.
The club had four members pass away this year and two more have moved away to rest homes.
“It has been quite a sad year.” Christine says it highlights
the fact Wainuiomata needs a rest home.
“It would just make such a
difference to them [the elderly] and their families.”
Christine says the club has had three venue changes since the RSA closed earlier this year, but they have now found a permanent home at the Fire Station.
“It’s the perfect size.”Christine says next year they
are hoping for a more settled year and better health.RIGHT: Stroke Club president Christine Johnston with Rene Kelly.

DIY CrackersIf you’re wanting to make a real impression when hosting Christmas at your place this year, what better way than to create your own crackers, fi lled with whatever you want. They are easy to make and put your own twist on as you fi ll them with chocolates, little gifts and your own jokes—the choice is yours.
You’ll need- A bon bon kit (from Spotlight)- Plain and coloured A4 paper- Small confetti (use a hole punch to punch out coloured paper to make your own)
- Sellotape- Double-sided sticky sheets cut into hearts or other shapes (available from Spotlight)- String- Your joke on a piece of paper- Scissors
Step onePlace the 'snapper' in the cracker kit inside the cardboard rollStep twoRoll up the roll inside the plain white paper. Secure with sticky tape.
Step threeBunch up the paper at one end and tie with the string, being sure to include the snapper and the ends hanging out past the string.Step fourFrom the open end, fi ll the roll with confetti, your rolled-up joke, gift, chocolate, etc. Bunch the paper up at this end with the snapper stick-ing out and tie with string.Step fi veCut a strip of coloured paper with scissors, roll it around the cracker and secure with tape.Step six
Stick on your double-sided sticky heart or other shape on the front of the cracker.Step sevenSprinkle confetti over the sticky shape and gen-tly pat into place. Place on plates and get ready to start your Christmas feast off with a bang!

The annual Santa Parade still went ahead on Saturday despite drizzly conditions.
Floats and walkers dressed up in Christ-mas atire assembled at Burdan Ave, and travelled along Main Road to the Wai-nuiomata Shopping Centre, a co-sponsor of the event.
The Christmas Parade also coincided with a Market Day at the Shopping Centre.
Mall manager Dave Tompkins says he was well pleased with the response to both of the events.
Prizes for the best entries were awarded by organiser Joy Jones, councillor Mar-
garet Willard, and community board member Joshua Briggs.
Puketua School won the best junior entry, The Warehouse won the best business entry, and the Rimutaka Forest Trust won the best community entry.
The best individual entry was won by the Smith Family for their Gingerbread Factory at the North Pole.
The Wainuiomata Fire Bridage won the best overall entry.
Roving photogaphers Dan Taylor and Daryl New were there.

Up until the 1940’s, new mothers had to take their babies to the School House at the Wainuiomata School, for help and advice, and to have them weighed.
The Headmaster, Mr Rishworth, and his wife were instrumental in having Plunket in the Valley.
As the population grew, the Wainuiomata Development Company donated land for the erection of a purpose built Plunket Rooms, next to today’s Louise Bilderbeck Hall.
The rooms were opened in November 1944 and served the mothers and babies of
the valley for over 60 years. Just four years after being built, rapid
growth in the Valley necessitated the en-largement of the building, and by 1948 ar-rangements were being made for additions.
Sadly, lack of demand and a deteriorat-ing building meant that in April 2009 the
building was demolished and today no sign of its existence can be seen.
Article and photos are courtesy of the Wainuiomata Historical Society. The Mu-seum is in the grounds of the Wainuiomata Primary School and open from 2–4pm on Sundays.
Plunket Rooms 1945, before additions.
Do you remember?Shortly before demolition, April 2009.
Phillippa Burdan married Murray Brown in December 1969 at the Coast Road Old Church.
The following was printed in the Valley News in the same month.
A wedding was recently solemnised at the old Coast Road Church, Wai-nuiomata, by the Rev. Salter between Phillippa Burdan, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Burdan, and Murray Brown, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Brown, of Evans Bay, and attended by 130 guests.
The Bride wore a full length white guipure lace coat with long sleeves
over a simple frock of crystal crepe. Part of an heirloom veil was in-
corporated in her long nylon veil. She carried a posy of white and red rose buds.
Phillippa’s bridesmaids, Marion Hawkins and Gaye Woodcock, and fl ower girl, Sharon O’Brien, a niece of the groom, wore long frocks of sea green crystal organza over emerald green.
Their posies were of red rosebuds and chin chin cheree. Murray’s best man and groomsman were Graham Westerby and Colin McNatty, and a
page boy David Foster, a nephew of the bride.
The bride was wearing an emerald green linen suit teamed with a white frilled blouse and navy accessories when the couple left for their hon-eymoon.
The wedding was due to start at 2pm but the bride was half an hour late. The reception was held in a marquee at the St Albans homestead.
Phillippa & Murray lived at Karaka Stream next to St Albans until 1989 before moving to the Kapiti Coast.
Their three children, Anthony
and identical twins Sonia and Nicole, were all pupils at Wainuiomata Primary School where Norm & Margaret
Wright were Principal and senior teacher.
Their home is now at Te Kouma Coromandel.
