Continued from page 1“I really like the fact that Konini

Primary is part of a cluster of schools that work collaboratively. Schools always work best in a connected way.

“My thinking around being a principal is that children are always happy, safe, and learning,” Andrea says, explaining her focus on discovering what learning looks like at Konini.

Believing that all children can have success in their learning, Andrea says a vital part of her role is to be able to listen – especially when it comes to hearing what students say about their own learning.

“I love to be in classrooms – talking to children and listening to them. Valuing what they do well. If we know their strengths we can help them achieve more.

“We will review what is taking place in the school to see if they’re the best

practices for learning. We will look at what we may need to do to ensure that every child achieves.”

Andrea’s love for teaching stems from when she was young, and says there is something special when one sees a child discover something for themselves.

“I always enjoyed learning and still enjoy learning. It is a continu ous thing.”

As a family, Andrea says they like to go on walks and tramps, as well as down to their local spot on the Hutt River.

“Most of the things we do are as a fam-ily,” she says, describing the signifi cance she places on commitment.

“I believe in the importance of being committed to a place. I’m here to work with students and staff as a team, and that’s for a long time.”

Konini welcomes new principal

Hill to have cycleway

CYCLEWAY: Mayor Ray Wallace and MP Chris Bishop.

PRINCIPAL:Andrea Scanlan

Cyclists are set to benefit from an announcement to improve cycle ways along the main thoroughfare into Wainuiomata.

The Government last week announced a $4.5 million investment into accelerat-ing the building of a shared pedestrian and cycle lane over the Wainuiomata Hill.

Both National List MP Chris Bishop and Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace were pleased with the announcement that would make it one of the fi rst projects to receive support from the Government.

“Residents of Wainuiomata and the Hutt have been calling

for a dedicated cycleway over the Wainui Hill for many years but it was not expected to be able to be funded until around 2018,” says Mr Bishop.

Mayor Wallace is thrilled with the plans for the new path that is set to better connect Wainuiomata and the wider Hutt Valley.

“Hutt City Council is com-mitted to a pedestrian and bike friendly region. This is great news for a more connected and active comm unity,” he says.

Mayor Wallace, who is also a Wainuiomata resident, is also pleased that council is working with both the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA)

and the Government on the project.“It shows a regional and national

commitment to promoting greater levels of walking and cycling, which has so many benefits for communities.”

The project will be linked to the new bridge that was planned to be

installed at the summit of hill.Along with this, council an-

nounced a new viewing platform that will also be situated at the top of Wainuiomata Hill.

The project will also be discussed at this week’s Wainuiomata Com-munity Board meeting.

Hi my name is Karena I moved here from Ireland and attended Wainuiomata primary and the old Parkway intermediate and College. I have three girls two of which attend Wainui high and one works in Wellington. I have worked at Jack and Jill for 11 years and I love

working with children because there is never a dull moment and they keep me young. I really enjoy going out and spending time with my family and friends.

A passion for young children and supporting their learning is what Wainuiomata local Karena loves about working at Jack and Jill Early Learning Centre.

After stepping into relieve at the centre nine years ago she never ended up leaving, saying she just loved working with the children too much to move on.

Karena says she enjoys taking part in a wide variety of activities with the children, from painting and drawing

to the fun in the sandpit.

The highlight of her day is to watch children explore new things and learn new skills, Karena says.

International arrivalsBy Emily Elliott

Simon Appeit turned his “Ahoj” into a “Hello” when he arrived in New Zealand from the Czech Republic on Friday, just in time to start at Wainuiomata High School this week as part of an international student exchange programme.

The 17-year-old is one of six inter-national students who will be taking up a seat in the classrooms this semester, and Simon says the whole experience has been really new.

Arriving from his snowy home city of Prague to a warm Wellington summer day after 30 hours of travel, Simon says the heat was the fi rst thing he noticed, followed by the landscape, and “all the hills!”

“New Zealand is the furthest place for me to come,” Simon says about why he chose this country to com-plete a six month exchange to.

Although he has been studying English for over nine years, he says he still struggles when it comes to understanding conversations between classmates.

“I’m hoping it will get better in a

few months,” he says.Explaining the many differences

between his country and his new temporary residence, Simon says they don’t have uniforms.

“This is very new to me. Also we start school at 8am – we have seven or eight subjects a day.”

Simon explains that students do not have the opportunity to choose their subjects, unlike New Zealand.

“The state has rules for which subjects you take.

“We have a twenty minute break during the school day, and then we have lunch after school fi nishes at 2.30pm.”

For Simon, the rest of the afternoon is spent swimming, playing the guitar, and hanging out with his friends – all of which he hopes to continue in Wainuiomata.

When asked what experiences he wants to take back to his friends and family in Europe, Simon says he hopes to have a taste of New Zealand history.

“I also want to take a sheep back, but I probably wouldn’t be allowed on the plane,” he jokes.

By Emily ElliottWanting to live on the

other side of the equator was one of the reasons why American Austin Nielsen decided to take part in the six month exchange to Wainuiomata High School.

The 17-year-old travelled from Sacramento, Califor-nia to New Zealand with the hope to learn about how a different country sees the world.

“I want to bring back a different view on society,” Austin says. “I’d heard a lot of good things about New Zealand. It’s a smaller country, and I’m from a

very large country.”The American football

player is planning to try rugby while he ventures on this side of the world, and says although there is no language barrier he has still had to adjust to some differences.

“Using the metric system is a challenge, as is driving on the other side of the road!”

His host father Adam Weir is one of the high school’s teachers, and Aus-tin says it was great to be told about the school before he started on Monday.

“I’ve been very welcomed

here.”International Dean Vir-

ginia Wilson says Wai-nuiomata High School hosts around 100 overseas students each year.

“It brings the world into our playground. It lifts the education in the school because of the exposure.”

Virginia says Wainuio-mata High School stu-dents are receptive to the students, and get on board with learning their cultures.

“The kids are really cou-rageous. They’ve left their family and the country to come to a place they don’t know for six months.”

Recent assessments conducted by the Greater Wellington Regional Coun-cil have raised a red alert for toxic algae in the Hutt River – especially around Poets Park and Silverstream.

Significant amounts of toxic algae are currently washing up on the river’s edge and it is unsafe for swimming. The GWRC recommends that river users keep their dogs away from the river in these areas.

You can spot toxic algae by looking out for brown or black clumps of algae at the river’s edge or in parts of the river where rocks are exposed or it’s shallow.

Assessments will be continually made and uploaded the council’s website: www.gw.govt.nz/summer-check.

Riding and driving for Ataahua

By Emily Elliott

It’s that time of year again – neighbours around the hood are celebrated, in an effort to encourage commu-nity spirit and recog-nize those who make a difference around Wainuiomata.

The Wainuiomata G o o d Ne ig hb ou r Awa rd 2015 wa s

launched this week, and nominations will be open until March 6.

Last year was the fi rst year the award ran, and with 40 nomina-tions, Wainuiomata Neighbourhood Sup-port coordinator Dawn McKinely says she hopes for even more this year.

“Every nomination last year was so wor-

thy. It was just wonder-ful reading them,” she says.

“We have so many lovely neighbours – they’re our unsung heroes!”

The award is funded by Hutt Safe City, and Dawn says she is hoping for the same panel of judges as last year – council-lor Margaret Willard,

community constable Aroha Morehu, and a member of the Hutt Safe City Board of Trustees.

Nomination forms and voting boxes are located at the commu-nity centre, the library, and the Wainuiomata Shopping Centre. The aw ard will be pre-sented by Mayor Ray Wallace on March 23.

Good neighbours to be rewarded

Children are celebrated every day, but on the fi rst Sunday in March it is offi cially Children’s Day.

In Wainuiomata, nothing is planned at the present time, but councillor Margaret Willard is planning on changing that.

“Something small in the com-munity would be great, to at least acknowledge the day,” she says.

Ideas Cr Willard had was to have board games set up and having games set up outside.

“It’s all about getting together and having fun,” Cr Willard says.

Another plan was to create areas where parents could share their memories of growing up, and also show art work of what children want the future to be

like. She also wants to ask children

what sort of world they want when they grow up.

The plan is to make this year’s event as cost effective as pos-sible.

“It will be cheap and easy, but it’s all about having fun,” she says.

“It doesn’t have to be big, something small in the com-munity would be great.”

Children’s Day was created to celebrate every child in the country.

Hundreds of events happen all over the country each March.

Even though this year’s event is coming up quickly, Cr Willard is hoping to get some ideas for next year’s event.

Plans needed for children’s day

CHILDREN GALORE: Wainuiomata children and their talents will be celebrated next month.

The Wainuiomata Water festival is under a month away, with the event taking place on February 28.The festival will be taking place at the Queen St Reserve and the whole day is centred around water and Wainuio-mata’s people.Everyone is encouraged to come down and have some fun, and also bring down a water pistol and join in the many water ghts that will be taking place during the day. There will also be live music and a crazy swimsuit competition taking place during the day.

10 Wednesday February 4, 2015

Happy New Year everybody.

What a glorious summer so far. I’ve managed to take some time out, and get into my garden in Wainuiomata.

Now I’m looking forward to another year at Council.

I’m glad I’m refreshed because it’s going to be another big year.

The draft proposal from the Local Government Commission for the reorganisation of the local governance of the Wellington and Wairarapa regions has been released, and we all have until 2 March 2015 to make submissions on it.

The draft proposal is for the eight local councils of Wellington, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua, Kapiti, Carterton, Masterton and South Wairarapa and the Greater Regional Wellington Council to amalgamate into one council with eight local boards.

I am disappointed that they have gone for the one unitary council, or “super-city” approach. This is against what 75 per cent of residents in the region, and 80 per cent of Hutt residents prefer.

Two main reasons Hutt City Council is opposed to this proposal are:

The loss of local democracy

To have a “single voice” for such a large and diverse area is hugely damaging for our communities being heard.

The decisions we make at local level require local knowledge, and local discussion.

Yes, there are local boards in this proposal but their power and budget is limited; most decisions are subject to approval by the central council, which will slow down decision making with more red tape.

High economic cost and risk, for such low economic gain

We are all for smart change and smart progress, but the evidence is that amalgamation of the Wellington councils is not the best path to cost saving.

Gains are made through shared services, that is two or more councils working together to purchase or provide a service in those areas where that is more effi cient.

Councils in the Wellington region have been working well together on shared services; we’ve done this with water, with our landfi ll,

with our economic development and emergency planning and we are making great progress in road and transport.

More information

We have set up a web page huttcity/amalgamation that has links to the draft proposal, a submission form and further information.

For those who don’t have easy internet access email or phone Council, P: 570 6666, E: [email protected]

Or talk to your local Councillor.

We respect all views and positions on this issue, and want to ensure you’re informed.

Make a submission before 2 March

You can fi ll out the form on our website, or contact Council to send you one. Or, you can send in a submission in whatever form you’d like to:

P: The Local Government Commission, PO Box 5362, Wellington 6145

E: [email protected]

After submissions close

After submissions and hearings the Commission will give the Government its fi nal proposal.

After this, if ten per cent of residents in any one of the eight affected local council regions sign a petition the proposed changes will go to a referendum, or public vote. If fi fty per cent or more do not support the change it won’t go ahead.

The Council cannot drive this petition - this is something residents will need to action if they want it.

So an interesting year ahead, which I look forward to serving as your Mayor.

With warm regards,

A word from Mayor Ray Wallace

The People’s Mayor

Dear Ed, Coming from the USA our teams al-ways had cheerleaders.

I appreciated their ef-forts leading the fans in encouraging us. This was appreciated most when the team wasn’t doing well and the fans were “sitting on their hands”.

I remember several oc-casions when a strong effort by the cheer squad

got the fans back into the game and gave the team that extra boost needed to get ahead on the score board for a victory.

I am not speaking of the scantily clad pro team squads, but of the second-ary school and university squads that you volunteer to join, work very hard at and contribute to the school because of school

spirit. The squads felt the joy of victory and the pain of defeat with us.

These young people are hardworking, dedicated and an example of the qualities that make a person worthwhile.

New Zealand has sent squads to the competition aired on ESPN. There you see the heart and soul of a cheer squad,

enthusiasm. You see so little of it in our schools now a days maybe cheer-ing could help.

I feel if a school or sports club can muster people willing to give it a go, they should be sup-ported. I am all in favour of cheer squads.

Our readers have their say.

Record low rainfall across the region during January saw Wainuiomata Reservoir record the lowest rainfall since 1890.The Wainuiomata Reservoir only received a monthly total of 1.5mm, which is less than two per cent of the

average monthly rainfall of 106mm. Rainfall and river flow records collected by the Greater Wellington Region-al Council are showing the effect of the recent warm and dry weather conditions on river flows and rainfall

across the entire region. The exceptionally dry start to the 2015 year has added to the already dry conditions that prevailed throughout October, November and December when rainfall was well below average for most parts of the region.

Dear Ed, A group in Queens-land, Australia are calling for de-amalgamation, since amal-galmation debt has doubled from $2 billion to $4 billion for them.

I believe we should support them. I do not know if it would be viable to break away from Hutt City as we have to have rate increase. At the heart of the issue are rates and we pay a water rate.

The changes are about fi scal responsibility and instruments

– taxation is a change to water metres or users pay charges.

User pay charges are ineffi cient as the price will go up like power did and the elderly and those in the low socioeconomic income group will fi nd it diffi cult to pay water bills and have quality of life.

We should fight to keep our legal status of local authority so we make rates at local level.

Children who have not been able to afford their stationary have been given everything they need for this year.

Reverend Yvonne Smyth from the Wainuiomata An-glican Parish has organised books and other station-

ary items to be donated to schools around the valley.

“The response from parish-ioners has been amazing and very generous,” says Yvonne.

Parishioners have donated exercise books, pencils and other stationary items for the start of the school year.

Yvonne will then take them to schools, where they are then given to children who don’t have stationary.

She is a part time teacher knows the frustrations expe-rienced when children don’t have the essential stationary items.

Wainuiomata’s newest public toilets have had a sprinkling of local pride added to them. The toilets have had images of local areas painted around its exterior walls. These images include the

Wainuiomata Golf Club, the Rimutaka Forest Park and Orongorongo Valley. This was done to stop people tagging the toilets and also to beautify the toilets in Hugh Sinclair Park.

Local kiwi around Wainuio-mata are getting a greater chance at life thanks to new technologi-cally advance traps being placed around the area.

The Rimutaka Forest Park Charitable Trust deployed 63 Goodnature resetting stoat traps and has witnessed immediate success.

The traps have been set as part of the trusts stoat control campaign to protect the local kiwi population.

Greater Wellington Regional

Council park ranger, Dion Nga-toro, checked a line of 34 traps along the road after fi ve nights in the fi eld and found four had already killed stoats.

“There have been a lot of stoats around this year,” Dion says.

Importantly, one of the reset-ting traps had multiple dead stoats beneath it – an outcome not achievable between trap checks with previously deployed stoat control single action de-vices that are used throughout the park.

Funding to buy the traps was received from the DOC adminis-

tered Community Conservation Partnership Fund Initiative in 2014 to ensure the survival of the Park’s kiwi.

Melody McLaughlin, from the Rimutaka Forest Park Trust says the group chose resetting traps as they were more time effective than the regular traps.

“We depend on the time our people generously give and with this technology we make their efforts go further for the Rimutaka kiwi,” she says.

Traps that reset themselves can kill multiple pests between trap checks, meaning fewer missed

opportunities to kill stoats and therefore greater conservation gains.

Traditional single-action traps can also be set off by rats, which cause them to then be unavail-able to kill a stoat until cleared by an operator.

“Kiwi are synonymous with the very core of what makes us New Zealanders,” says Melody

“Kiwi have a resilience second to none, when we restore their habitat, their home, and control or eradicate their introduced predators, kiwi can fl ourish in the wilds of Wellington. ”

We throw our clothes on and off daily, during which time we are partially or wholly naked for a few seconds or minutes, and we spend quality time in the shower in our birthday suit. But when was the last time you took a good look at yourself butt naked in front of the mirror – front and back?

You’d be surprised by how illuminating this exercise can be. You can spot trouble on the horizon in the form of body oddities that you didn’t have before and signs of skin cancer. Skin cancers rarely hurt, and are more often seen than felt. www.cancernz.org.nz has some excellent information about what to look for and signs of danger.

The skin acts as an indicator of the state of the entire body, and external skin discolourations, blemishes, lesions, rashes, blotches, or other unsightly marks can be signs of underlying internal disease.*

Ladies know your breasts. It is important to check what is ‘normal’ for you. Often in the early symptoms of breast cancer there is usually no pain and there may be no symptoms at all. Go to www.nzbcf.org.nz/E-Guide for more information.

You can also get an honest sense of how well you are aging based on your physical appearance alone. Is your overall skin tone and set of wrinkles refl ective of someone your age? Do you look older than your chronological age? And you can use this moment to gather measurements that can help you track the progress you’re making by changing your habits.

Measure your waist and see it get smaller. Start a skin-care regime that nourishes the health of your skin (and keeps you examining your skin regularly). Or maybe just tell yourself you’re beautiful and doing OK.

We all know that having a strong sense of self and being comfortable in our own skin will go a long way to keeping us healthy and psychologically strong.

Physical cctivity can help people live longer, healthier lives.

The New Zealand Physical Activity Guidelines outline the minimum levels of physical activity required to gain health benefits and ways to incorporate incidental physical activity into everyday life.

New Zealand adults should:- View movement as an opportu-

nity, not an inconvenience.- Be active every day in as many

ways as possible.- Put together at least 30 minutes of

moderate intensity physical activity on most, if not all, days of the week.

- If possible, add some vigorous exercise for extra health benefi t and fi tness.

Adult guidelines for physical activ-ity were developed by the Sport New Zealand in consultation with the Ministry of Health in 2001.

Movement = Health is aimed at health professionals and includes ways to promote the guidelines.

Children and young people (5–18 years)

Children and young people should:- Throughout each day, do 60 min-

utes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity

- Be active in as many ways as possible, for example, through play, cultural activities, dance, sport, recreation, jobs and going from place to place

- Be active with friends and whanau,

at home, school and in their com-munities

- Spend less than two hours a day (out of school hours) in front of the television, computers, and game consoles.

New Zealand physical activity guidelines for children and young people (aged 5–18 years) were devel-oped by Sport New Zealand and the Ministries of Health and Education in 2007.

Children under fi ve yearsThere are no specifi c guidelines

for children under fi ve-years-old but movement is important from birth. Active movement is encouraged for healthy development – children learn from movement and physical activity.

Physical activity for a long life

Exercise and physical activity fall into four basic categories—endurance, strength, balance, and fl exibility. Most people tend to focus on one activity or type of exercise and think they’re doing

Four types of exerciseenough, however doing them all will give you more benefi ts. Mixing it up also helps to reduce boredom and cut your risk of injury.

Some activities fi t into more than one category. For exam-ple, many endurance activities also build strength. Strength exercises also help improve balance.

Endurance, or aerobic, ac-tivities increase your breathing and heart rate. They keep your heart, lungs, and circulatory system healthy and improve your overall fitness. Build-ing your endurance makes it easier to carry out many of your everyday activities.

Strength exercises make your

muscles stronger. Even small increases in strength can make a big difference in your ability to stay independent and carry out everyday activities, such as climbing stairs and carrying groceries. These exercises also are called strength or resistance training.

Balance exercises help pre-vent falls, a common problem in older adults. Many lower-body strength exercises will improve your balance.

Flexibility exercises stretch your muscles and can help your body stay limber. Being fl exible gives you more free-dom of movement for other exercises as well as for your everyday activities.

A dynamic sister-combo has been showing what they are worth in the world of BMX, achieving highly whenever they get on a bike.

Amber and Kasey Thomp-son-Delany are part of Wai-nuiomata BMX Club and are just one example of the many families that call it home.

The duo have been riding since 2009, with Kasey start-ing fi rst and quickly followed by Amber after she saw how much enjoyment her sister got out of the sport.

“I was about six months after her, I saw Kasey was having fun so I decided to join in,” Amber says.

Amber is a former moto-cross rider and but has since quit to concentrate on her BMX.

The girls say that they can be competitive with each other, especially if they are in the same race but that’s the fun of it.

“If we are in the same race, we are competitive, but it can be helpful as well,” says Kasey

Kasey has set her eyes on the Olympics and keeps it as a goal for her in the future. She trains a lot for this.

“I train about six or seven days a week, and every Sun-day we train up in Kapiti,” she says.

The Wainuiomata BMX Club recently upgraded its course with tar sealed corners ready for riders to use this year.

The club upgraded its cor-ners to make the track more consistent with other tracks round the country.

BMX a family affair

BMX RIDERS: Amber and Kasey Thompson-Delany have been riding since 2009, starting within six months of each other.

By Aaron MeredithA group of people in Wainuiomata have

got together in the name of better health.Whanau Ora free boot camp is running

classes in Wainuiomata encouraging people to get together and have fun while they get fi t.

Nathan Waitai and Renee Tuuina have been running the classes and say that the group is all about getting together and helping each other.

“It’s just a group of people who wanted to exercise together with their whanau,” says Nathan.

The group started off in Stokes Val-ley and has groups now in Naenae and Wainuiomata.

They generally have about 20-50 in the group, and all of them are helping each other along the way.

Nathan says that the camp attracts a lot of Maori and Pacifi c Island people as they do not like joining a gym.

“Our people like to exercise, it is helping

the obesity rates of the Maori and Pacifi c people,” Nathan says.

The group uses the philosophy of work-ing as a team rather than training solo.

“In a team we have found everyone encourages each other, they provide a great support system for each other,” he says.

Renee, who is from Wainuiomata, runs the Dancefi t classes, and became a coach after taking part in the program.

She use to take two buses over to Naenae to work out there, before eventually Nathan asked her if she wanted to help run a class in Wainuiomata.

“I started building up confi dence when I started running the dancefi t classes,” Renee says.

The group meets every Monday through to Thursday, having dancefi t classes on Monday night and Thursday night, with boot camp taking pace on the other nights.

The group meets at 6pm at the Com-munity Hub, and everyone is welcome to come along and join in.

Fitness with the whanau

By Aaron MeredithIt was a disappointing week for the Wai-

nuiomata softball club with only one team claiming a victory.

That team was the Wainuiomata womens team who smashed Stokes Valley by 21-1 in a commanding performance.

The Wainuiomata Rare Breeds had a closely fought loss to The Saints.

It went down just 9-8, the result keeps the Rare Breeds outside the top four sitting in fi fth on 14 points.

Wainuiomata top the table on 22 points, equal on points with the Steelers but it does have a game in hand on rivals.

The mens grade was an uneventful week-end, with neither team playing this week.

The Wainuiomata Pressies had a bye, while the Wainuiomata Natives lost by default after a ground change.

The results leave their position on the table unchanged, the Pressies still lead the grade on 24 points.

The Natives are still sitting second last on
