A Wainuiomata man and his Brooklyn business partner are taking on the world – one beer at a time.

Their beer has been in the pipeline for a few years, and now the craft brewers have started releasing their crea-tive concoctions to Wellingtonians around the region.

The crafty pair started off with a Hand Pulled Pork English Ale for International Bacon Day last year, but has been on the go since – with their beverages selling out after Brewday two weeks ago.

BREWING DUO: Kerry Gray and Mike Pullin have gained a popular fan base after introducing their craft beers to the region.

Continued from page 1Mike Pullin and Kerry Gray are the creative

minds behind Choice Bros Brewery – makers of beers that a lot of people call “gimmicky”, but they describe as fun.

They have three core brews – one is an English Ale with peanut butter and raspberries, and the rest are one-off creations.

Mike are Kerry are self-described ‘gypsy brewers’ at the moment, meaning they brew where they are able however, they have plans for their own place.

Moores Valley resident Mike has a fi nancial and hospitality background, which feeds into Choice Bros creations.

“We did a beer last Halloween called the HannibALE Porter. It had liver, fava beans, and chianti,” says Mike.

“It was actually great. It’s a bit of fun.”Mike says the whole venture started as a bit

of an experiment, but their brand is gaining momentum.

“We are looking for a home and to establish our own premises.”

Kerry says the beers strike a balance between having crazy ingredients, yet still being drink-able.

“My inspiration comes from everywhere;

cook books, others giving me strange ideas. There is always beer and food matches.”

Although there has been a demand for the brewers to start bottling, they are still working at batch level and releasing it to local bars around Wellington.

The duo says their next big batch will be at the Hopstock Festival, where they are releasing a Harvest Ale which can be created once a year.

Hundreds of vehicles travel to and from work each day – all via Wainuiomata Hill Road. However, lane closures are set to cause a bit of delay.

Hut t City Counci l an-nounced that there would be lane closures over the next few weeks as more work is carried out on the main thoroughfare into the valley.

While a resurfacing project was completed last year, work to improve the safety of the

road will continue through in-stalling a high friction surface laid to increase skid resist-ance and prevent accidents.

Work is set to begin on March 23, and according to a council spokesperson should take approximately 10 days to complete.

Drivers are reminded to keep to the temporary speed limits during this time.

In the past, the road has been plagued by accidents includ-ing one which left a man in his twenties hospitalised after

crashing through a barrier on the Hutt Valley side of the hill.

Despite this, accidents have dramatically decreased on the hill since the introduction of a robust maintenance plan 10 years ago.

It is still a high speed, high trafficked road with tight curves on a steep gradient, and drivers are urged to take care at the best of times.

Hutt City Council makes safety for road users the top priority in the maintenance

and renewal of the road. Approximately $800,000 is spent each year to ensure that it is kept in a condition that is safe for road users.

Rather than doing the entire Hill all at the same time, work on individual sections is staged over different years, for a number of reasons in-cluding individual sections can have different renewal and maintenance time frames, and to minimise disruption and inconvenience to road users.

Confetti was popped and spirits were joyous as Wainuio-mata’s CORD Group celebrated its 21st birthday on Friday.

The group started in 1994, and helps elderly residents who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) – a disease which affects breathing and can make it hard to do everyday activities.

Coordinator Genevieve Young says the group started with the help of a physiotherapist who worked for Hutt Hospital, then was continued with the help of Community Health nurses.

The group originally started meeting at the Parkway Com-munity Centre, before moving to Senior Sits, and fi nally to the their current home at the Wai-nuiomata Community Centre.

“We’ve had a wonderful 21 years,” Genevieve said as she addressed the group members on Friday.

“A big thank you to all. This group has looked after your-selves for a number of years.

You have been very good at keeping yourselves well,” she told the members, saying a group is only as good as the people who come.

Genevieve says the group now has a life member, Ken Wells, who was the long-time

treasurer and secretary, and is also grateful to Clive Cannons who picked CORD to donate $1000 to this year.

“It’s almost unbelievable that we’re still going strong,” she told the Wainuiomata News after the celebration.

“I’ve just loved the people of Wainuiomata – they help each other. It’s been about friend-ship as well as education.”

The group meet once a month for a supportive and informa-tive session, often with a guest speaker.

Young hearts for 21-year milestone

PARTY: Genevieve Young holds the cake in celebration of 21 years for CORD.

The Wainuiomata Commu-nity Patrol will be holding an event called Safer Plates on Saturday, a campaign run by community partols around the country.

The event aims to make sure vehicle number plates are se-cured on a vehicle so that they don't become the object of thieves who may want them for their vehicles to disguise registration details or to be used in petrol station drive offs.

Supported by Countdown Supermarkets, and set to

be held in the mall carpark, Wainuiomata's patrol deputy coordinator Paul Knox says resident’s number plate screws can be swapped for secutriy screws, meaning lisence plates stay on cars.

The event also helps fundraise for the patrol – car plate screws will be swapped for $5, and bikes for a gold coin donation.

Paul says the patrol hopes to have a number of fundraising activities over the year as they start to bring the community into the centre of their fund-

raising."Our car is 10 years old and

has over 250,000kms on the clock which recently meant over $1600 worth of repairs. This is on top of fuel costs of approximately $3500 – $4000 each year, other running costs of about $1000 and communi-cation costs of another $3000 plus each year," says Paul.

"We are very thankful to our major donors Unichem Clives Pharmacy, Wainui Landscape and Lumber, Wellington Pipelines and Advance Auto

Electrical for their support. We also apply for grants from Charitable Trusts. Applications aren't always successful and in the economic climate it has been tougher than normal for all Hutt Valley patrols to get grant funding."

Paul says the patrol are look-ing at holding movie nights in conjunction with Lighthouse and Event cinemas in order to fundraise.

Safer Plates will run from 10am until 2pm.

Wainuiomata residents can join the rest of the region today, by participating in Walk2Work day.

Research has shown that people who commute by bus or train and ferry, get on average over three times the exercise of those in a car – and bus and trains are the safest way to get around.

Living Streets Aotearoa started the annual walk day in 2009 to promote walking, its health benefi ts, and its prior-ity position in sustainable transport.

Living Streets president Andy Smith says they want to see the government promote walking and public transport through events like Walk2Work Day, and make a fundamental change to more people-centred cities.

Mayor Ray Wallace will be jumping on board Walk2Work day with some bus and walking action from Wainuiomata to his council offi ce.

Wainuiomata High School has another international stu-dent to add to their list, with Frenchman Jules Bargues arriving last week.

Travelling from Toulon in the south of France, the 17-year-old saw a good experience to become independent, learn English, and gain worldwide valuable knowledge.

As a keen rugby player, Jules says New Zealand’s rugby reputation also sparked his interest in completing his four month exchange to this country.

“I’d love to watch a rugby game when the All Blacks are playing. This is the country of rugby!”

Jules let no time go to waste, and started rugby training last

week with his friends from the high school, saying he hopes to learn a lot about playing the game well.

Although he is an avid En-duro rider, Jules says he will be focusing on playing rugby as his after school activity while he is in the country.

Getting amongst the New Zealand culture is something that Jules hopes will develop his English skills – despite the fact he started learning the language when he was 10-years-old.

“School in France is very strict. People here have more liberty,” says Jules.

Jules will be taking part in day-to-day school activities and subjects with his fellow peers, and says he already en-joys the way teachers engage with students in New Zealand.

FRENCHMAN: Rugby player Jules Bargues has joined the group of international students at Wainuiomata High School.

Many young people thrive at school and can’t wait to get back after the long sum-mer break. Others are ready for different experiences, working with their hands or alongside other adults.

A small group of Year 11 boys from Wainuiomata High School spent last year splitting their week over three days at secondary school and two days at the Wellington Trades Academy at WelTec.

Twelve of the students achieved NCEA level 1 and almost all of the students are continuing on with further study this year. The pro-gramme built on the boys’ interests and opened up ex-periences of what it is like to

be a carpenter or an engineer.Wainuiomata High School

pr incipal Martin Isberg says he is pleased that the school’s collaboration with the Wellington Trades Academy and Ta ranak i Whanui Runan-ga has achieved such positive results for stu-dents.

Tutor at the academy, Ker ry Parkes, says the stu-dents started by making some of the equipment trades-men use every day, such as saw stools and metal tool trays.

“Then they moved on to

projects like making a set of cupboards, picnic tables (which they did a great job of) and wind vanes with

aluminium fans on

the tail.“The weather

vane project was really interesting be-

cause we took them up to the Brooklyn hill wind turbine so they could understand what they were making had bigger uses than simply showing

which way the wind is blow-ing,” says Kerry.

“They saw that same tech-nology leads into power gen-eration and that what they were doing could help them get into good careers.”

Wainuiomata High School teacher Tryfan Ephraim says helping the students see how good their future could be was a driving force for the staff of the Trades Academy and Wainuiomata High School.

“We took the time to do goal setting with the boys and then took them through a step by step process right through the year that kept coming back to these goals and showed them how they were doing,” says Tryfan.

A former Hutt Valley High School student and graffi ti artist has transformed a derelict, dark and drab bus into a mural featuring a large tui, pink foliage and plenty of colour.

Ash Sisson, 18, is in just his second week studying design at Massey University but recently spent a day breathing new life into a Wellington bus shelter.

The Eastbourne resident, who uses the alias Chimp, says he fi rst approached the Wellington City Council last year about being an artist interested in taking part in such projects.

Six months later the council’s art team gave him a call and in mid-February this year Ash and his girlfriend spent a day at the Berhampore bus stop turning his idea into reality.

“They [WCC] were quite keen on a native bird scene and that’s a lot of what I do with my personal art anyway,” he says.

Ash has previously been commissioned to create several murals, including for the Vibe Youth Centre in Lower Hutt and for the Punch coffee bar on Manners Street.

Ash, a keen skateboarder, says he has been painting for a long time but first picked up an aerosol can of paint about three years ago.

“I never really got into brush painting and I didn’t have the patience for it,” Ash says. “There’s a big difference when you pick up a can.

“It feels quite powerful the utensil itself. You feel like you can create or destroy something in a matter of seconds.”

After fi nishing the Luxford Street mural, Ash says he was quite proud of himself and he has had good feedback, mainly about the large native tui.

Ash headed to the Getup Festival in New Plymouth at the weekend where he had a wall mural space to complete.

Ash is the artist in residence at Wellington Zoo for 2015.

MP Chris Bishop is encouraging teachers in the Hutt to apply for a Prime Minister’s Education Excellence award.

“The Prime Minister’s awards celebrate the people in our communities delivering the best teaching to children – those who raise the bar that bit higher.

“Great teachers change lives, and it’s vital that we publicly recognise and reward the great teachers working hard every day to give Hutt Valley children the best start in life,” Mr Bishop says.

The four main categories in the Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards are excellence in governing, excellence in lead-ing, excellence in teaching and learning, and

excellence in engaging. The category win-ners will receive $20,000, and the supreme winner will receive an additional $30,000.

This year the education focus prize cel-ebrates a focus on collaboration creating learner-led pathways from early childhood to schooling.

“We have so many talented education pro-fessionals in the Hutt, many of whom I’ve met in my visits around the community. It would be great to see Hutt teachers recognised in these prestigious awards.”

Entry forms are available at www.pma-wards.education.govt.nz. Entries close on 20 March 2015.

MP encourages teachers to apply for awards

Due to low water levels in the region's rivers and aquifer, a ban on the household use of garden sprinklers and other unat-tended irrigation systems was put in place last week.

This ban is to ensure there will be enough water for the essential needs of households, businesses and public services.

There was no signifi cant rain at all during January and Wellington's water supply rivers are fl owing at roughly a quarter of normal February levels.

The rain showers the region has had have been too light to improve the situation and the Wainuiomata Water Treatment Plant, one of three serving the region's four cities, may have to be closed within a week due to a shortage of water.

Wellington Water's operations manager Noel Roberts says water sources are already stressed.

"If we are down a water treatment plant as well, we would struggle to cope with high demand. We'd like to see water use below 150 million litres per day now."

Everyone in the region is being encouraged to ease back on their water use by about 15 litres a day.

"For a three-person home that can be achieved if each person spends one or two minutes less in the shower, or three to four minutes less hosing the garden."

Simple things like turning the tap off while cleaning your teeth, and washing only full loads of dishes all help to reduce water use.

At this stage residents can still use a hand-held hose at any time but watering when it’s cooler helps reduce evaporation and protect your plants.

The Wainuiomata Fire Brigade took part in the National Waterway Challenge in Greymouth on Friday.

A tradition that dates back to 1885, the event is an opportunity to put hose-running and pump-operating skills to the test in a fun yet competi-tive environment.

Mati Soi and his team mate Josh Wealleans worked hard and showed dedication to the fi re service.

Last year residents and busi-ness owners in Wainuiomata had their say on what they wanted the community to look like in 2035.

The project's steering group have gathered the feedback and collated the collective vision - now they want the community's approval and feedback.

Dubbed the Wainuiomata De-velopment Plan, steering group member Nikki Wynne says she is thrilled with the feedback re-ceived after a large and passion-ate turnout to the community workshop late last year.

“We’ve had lots of feedback and now we’re keen to agree a vision together.

“Much of the feedback was thematically similar and was around being an eco-friendly, safe, vibrant community that continues to connect and stick together.”

An was held on March 5 at the Wainuiomata Library from 10am-7pm, and has been left set up for residents to visit and

add to until Thursday, March 12 at the Wainuiomata Library or Wainuiomata Shopping Centre.

Residents can also view the vi-sion and submit feedback online from Thursday, at www.huttcity.govt.nz/vibrant-wainuiomata.

Councillor Campbell Barry says the next step is to use this information to inform projects

and ideas over the next 20 years.“We’ll use this feedback

to guide more conversations around how we work together towards 2035 and the Wainuio-mata we all want to see.”

The group are working to-wards fi nalising the plan by June 2015.

Wainuiomata Tennis Club was given a spruce up last week, when Dulux employees and volunteers from the club worked on repainting the exterior of the building.

Stuart Cowley and Kip Te Whyte started preparing the building for the paint job on Wednesday, alongside club members Ian Gooch, Roland Nock, and Brendan McCau-ley, and spent four days working on the project.

Club member Ian Gooch says

Dulux provided the paint, the expertise, and the hands to be able to revamp the deteriorating walls.

“After the club’s roof was re-placed, it was evident to see that the walls needed freshening up,” says Ian.

“Dulux’s involvement makes it so much easier to do things on a vol-unteer basis. It’s given this project a move ahead in leaps and bounds.”

Ian says on Sunday, more volun-teers from Dulux came down to help on their day off, as well as members from the club.

“It’s beyond their call of duty.”Stuart, technical trainer from

Dulux says the company runs a community initiative where groups can ask for support.

“One of our staff members rec-ommended the tennis club. Com-munity work is a part of our job, and it gets rostered in.

“We use it as an opportunity for training too.”

Wainuiomata Tennis Club com-mittee member Roland Nock says the club greatly appreciates the help that Dulux gave.

SPRUCE UP: Ian Gooch, Brendan McCauley, Roland Nock, Stuart Cowley, and Kip Te Whyte were some of many who helped to repaint the tennis club’s walls.

Hutt City Libraries and GNS Science are coming together to hold a series of author-led knowledge sessions, with renowned scientists from across New Zealand.

The sessions, titled ‘Hot Science – Cool Tales’, will take place at the War Memorial Library from March to November, with the fi rst talk set for Thursday March 19.

Prominent New Zealand scientists will explain and unpack a fascinating area of science related to a book they have written, and answer questions about the mysteries of science.

The series follows on from the success of a pilot programme in 2014 and acknowledges a shared understanding of the importance of science and technology in Hutt City.

For session dates and more information, visit the Libraries website.

Fifty volunteers spent Sunday afternoon picking up rubbish on Petone Beach, to mark the end of Seaweek 2015.

Over 113 kilograms of rubbish was taken off the beach by participants, including cigarette butts from the seawall, fast-food packaging, coat hangers and even underwear. The bulk of the rubbish collected was small pieces of broken plastic.

Event organiser Micheline Evans was thrilled with the dedication of the volunteers.

“Picking up rubbish on the beach can be an over-whelming and uncomfortable experience. It forces us to consider the waste we create and the impact of our actions, which isn’t an easy thing to do.”

Hutt City Council’s environmental sustainability advisor, Sandy Beath-Croft, says that while the an-nual beach clean-up is effective, residents and visitors must play their part to reduce the amount of waste entering our beaches and streams in the fi rst place.

“The annual beach clean-up event always sees a short-term reduction in the amount of waste on our beach; but we need to fi x the root cause of the issue, which is littering. We all have a personal responsibil-ity and a part to play.”

There are more than 35 rubbish bins along the Petone esplanade, which are emptied daily on weekdays, and twice a day during weekends, over the summer period.

Visitors to the area are urged to use the bins provided, or take their litter home.

Senior drivers can brush up on their road rules thanks to a new series of workshops to be held over the next two months.

The workshops, Staying Safe, con-tain specialised content created by the NZ Transport Agency and are target for drivers aged 70 and over.

Other senior drives who wish to refresh their skills are also welcome to attend the two hour workshops.

Hutt City Council's road safety

coordinator Jan Simmons says that the process of aging can affect a range of skills which are essential to safe driving, such as eyesight, memory, decision-making, and recation times.

“It’s important for all drivers, re-gardless of age, to regularly and honestly assess their own driving capabilities and make adjustments if necessary,” says Jan.

“The workshop will help drivers to do this, and to explore other trans-

port options so they can keep their independence when the time comes to reduce the amount of driving that they do.”

The workshops will be run by Age Concern at Petone Community House on Wednesday March 11, Friday March 20, and Wednesday April 29, from 10am to 12.15pm.

Those planning to attend must register through Age Concern.

Holden’s new and expanded Trax range has been given a bit more pep.

The top of the range Trax LTZ now has an optional 1.4 litre iTi (‘intelligent Turbo induction’) petrol engine which delivers 103kW of power and 200Nm of torque. Its fuel economy is excep-tional, without compromising the great driving experience.

The new engine, also found in Holden’s sporty Barina RS, lets drivers experience an even more refined and responsive drive in both city and country environments – as well as on the open road.

A six-speed automatic transmis-sion delivers precise, smooth shifts between gears and fuel-effi cient cruising. The new Trax also has new 18” alloy wheels, a

More power for Trax

SPEEDSTER: Holden’s new Trax LTZ now has an optional 1.4 litre iTi engine. PHOTO: Supplied.

The New Zealand Automobile Association is welcoming the Gov-ernment’s announcement of a range of road safety improvements set to be rolled out in areas with high rates of crashes involving visiting drivers.

“We have nearly three million tourists visiting New Zealand every year, many of them drive, and the public are hugely concerned about some of the horrifi c crashes that have taken place,” says AA spokes-person Simon Douglas.

“There is no silver bullet for preventing these crashes but the package of measures announced today is going to make the roads safer for locals and visitors alike.”

The AA was particularly pleased to see that actions will include: roading improvements like 50km of rumblestrip centreline, directional arrows on an additional 200km of roads, 140km of no passing markings, better signage and in-formation.

There has already been some good

initiatives taken by the Government and the tourism industry to try and make the roads safer, like rental companies providing videos and information to their customers about the differences driving here.

“There is a lot of good work being done looking at ways to reduce these tragic crashes and that has to continue."

"The AA has had a lot of Members contacting us with ideas about improving the safety of visiting drivers, which shows how much people care about this issue,” Simon says.

One of the things the AA is encouraging people to do is to phone *555 and report instances of dangerous driving so that the authorities can identify the worst problem areas and focus on making them safer.

“Ultimately we all want tourists to keep coming to New Zealand, be safe on our roads, and go home having had a fantastic experience.”

AA backs actions to reduce visiting driver crashes

driver’s arm rest and rain sensing wipers.

Holden’s general marketing manager Marnie Samphier says the Trax remains one of the most technologically advanced vehicles in its class.

The popular 1.8 litre engine will remain available on Trax, matched with the six-speed au-tomatic transmission, in both the Trax LS and LTZ.

Save the Children New Zealand is urging New Zealanders to celebrate children today on NZ’s Children’s Day.

Heather Hayden, Chief Executive of Save the Children NZ says while progress is being made to protect our most vulnerable children, more needs to be done to bridge the inequality gap.

“Inequality is the biggest obstacle to making sure ALL children get the future they deserve.”

“Today reminds us that we need

to cherish our children and to invest in them early on to make sure they grow into happy, secure adults able to contribute to society.”

In May, the government will send its report on the status of our children to the United Nations.

“All children, whoever and wher-ever they are, have the right to a happy, healthy and fulfilling life,” says founder of Save the Children Eglantyne Jebb.

Sports with Aaron Meredith

By Nikki Braniff -Jones,Wainuiomata Harriers

As we head into autumn, and with winter soon to show up, keeping up an exercise routine can get a bit more challenging. During the cold months it's easy just to curl up on the couch, put on the layers and put on the kilos. Motivation is down and comfort food is up.

One of the best ways to combat this slump is to exercise with other people.

Wainuiomata Harrier Club has its opening day coming up on Saturday, March 14. The club welcomes all levels and ages of runners and walkers. Some of our members compete at interclub events while others are happy walking or running socially in our club meetings each week. The choice is yours. Come along and give it a go! You don’t have to be fi t or have even run before.

We meet at 2pm at our club-rooms in Richard Prouse Park, Hine Road. Come and enjoy

some of the wonderful tracks and scenery that Wainui has to offer while treating your body to fresh air and the Vitamin D our bodies crave during the winter months. We are a very social club and include several social activities during the season.

The week after our opening day, March 21, is our famous chocolate run/walk.

This event involves all runners and walkers guessing what time they will walk/run the short course in. You then leave your

watch behind, complete the course, and the closest to their estimated time wins. Loads of fun is to be had, and of course there is chocolate!

Our fi rst of our interclub races start in April, and are short cross-country relays, which are a lot of fun. These give runners and walkers a chance to blow off some cobwebs, or just get out there and have a go. Last year saw our kids section and masters runners perform very well at the relays and other interclub races.

So gather up the family and come down to Richard Prouse Park at 2pm on the March 14 for our opening day followed by afternoon tea, and again at 2pm on Marh 21 for the chocolate run/walk. Please bring a gold coin donation for this event. For those wanting to get a bit more out of their running, we also have a training group that leaves the rugby league clubrooms on Tuesdays. For more details or information on the club please contact Paul on 970 7651.

Season starts for Harriers

On Sunday the New Zealand Breakers did what Australians never thought they would ever do when they were fi rst introduced into the Australian National Basketball League.

With under a second to go Ekene Ibekwe scored a basket that has given the Breakers their fourth title in fi ve years.

Is this the time for the Aussies to fi nally give us a second franchise in their league? There is a strong case for a team.

The Wellington Saints are the most successful team that the capital has produced in all sports.

They have won eight titles all up, and are always up near the top of the New Zealand NBL.

On their roster last year, the team boasted Corey Webster, BJ Anthony, Dion Prewster, as well as New Zealand Basketball legend Lindsay Tait.

Webster plays for the Breakers, BJ Anthony plays in the ANBL with the Adelaide 36ers.

Dion Prewster is on the Breakers books and he has also played college basketball in the US.

And Lindsay Tait has been a mainstay in the New Zealand Tall Blacks for years

These four plus a signing of another decent forward could make for a starting fi ve that could easily compete with the best the Australians could throw at them.

It has been well publicised that owner Nick Mills wants to have his team in the ANBL, he has the drive to compete against the best, and Wellington will have the players.

So the question is, if there was another ANBL team in New Zealand, would you support it?

Would you go along to TSB Bank Arena and support them against The Breakers?

Finally, how cool would it be to see a Breakers versus Saints fi nals series in the ANBL? The Australians would not like that at all.

Time for an ANBL team in Wellington?

Italy may be a long way from Wainuiomata, but that is not stop-ping Shahn Eru from enjoying the experience overseas.

Shahn has signed a contract with Petrarca rugby club in Padova Italy and has been enjoying the rugby and the country.

“I’m enjoying it over here, learnt a bit of the language and a bit of cooking,” Shahn says.

Currently his team is sitting fourth from bottom in the top Italian rugby division.

The season continues until mid-way through this year and he has

his fl ights already booked home to come see his family and friends.

“The fl ight home is booked for June, I am looking forward to seeing my friends and family and have some New Zealand food,” he says.

“I’ll be there running the waters on the fi rst Jubilee Cup game.”

The team is currently playing in the second round of the season and Shahn says that the team is start-ing to come together really well.

“There are a lot of new players come in and we are starting to play together as a team,” Shahn says.

He originally signed a one year contract with an option to sign on

for a future year, but Shahn was undecided if he was going to.

“I haven’t signed on yet, I have to wait and see in the next month or so to see what I will be doing next,” he says.

Other than a red card that he re-ceived, Shahn says that he thinks he is playing well, and is looking forward to the rest of the season.

For those that want to see Shahn play, there are games being put up online regularly, this has been helpful for Shahn’s family back home.

“Some games have been online so Mum has been watching them,” he says.

Italian experience going well, says Eru

Athletic skill showcasedBy Emily Elliott

Wainuiomata Intermediate School held their annual athletics day on Wednesday last week, with just under 300 students participat-ing in events.

Deputy principal Mike Nielsen says the day went well, and that they were lucky with the weather.

“Kids always come to the party on a day like this. They look great all dressed up in their house

colours.”Mike says the students have been

practicing the athletic events in their physical education classes for a month leading up to competition day, so that they know the skills.

“It’s one of the school’s major events. All of the kids are expected to give it a go, and they get points for taking part.”

Ignite Sports was at the school to help out on the day, and Mike says the school couldn’t have run

the event without them. The school also has a student sport council, with sports leaders who helped to pack down on the day.

“Athletics day is a nice way to bring the school together as one. It’s a fun thing, and sport is a big part of these kids’ lives,” says Mike.

“This day gives a chance to kids with athletic ability to excel and shine – and a chance for them to beat school records!”
