“We made a stand last night by not having a sportsman.

“You have to be good in school and good on the sports fi eld.”

However, Peter Cowan says he is very proud of what they have done in sports this year and of Montaya’s success.

“We achieved so much this year.” Montaya says it was a massive surprise

being named sportswoman and having a portrait revealed.

“It was a really good surprise because I had no clue what was happening.

“It was an eye opener for how much I did.”She says her granddad was the proudest

person there. Montaya’s portrait will now be hung in the

gym, along with previous years’ recipients, but, Montaya sees a lighter side to the suc-cess.

“Now, it’s a target practice for balls.” Peter says Montaya has worked hard to be

awarded the sportswoman of the year.

“She’s been a strong performer for the last three years.

“She’s an awesome kid really.”

Montaya is fi nishing school this year but will continue training with the hammer next year.

She plans on taking some recovery time to have a knee surgery.

But the year is far from over for her as she is competing in the Secondary Schools competition at the end of the year and the New Zealand Nationals in March.

The 18-year-old has achieved a high level of success this year in hammer and shotput, including representing New Zealand at the Oceania Area Championship in Tahiti earlier this year.

Montaya had previously competed at the NZ Track and Field Championships and won the bronze medal in the javelin throw. She is also the NZ Secondary Schools senior girls Hammer throw champion. She is the only Wainuiomata High School athlete to win a New Zealand secondary schools title.

Her coach Shaka Sola was a special guest at the awards night.

may now be a lucky place, since the introduction of Lotto to their store last week.

Owner Hemal Gandhi says they decided to add Lotto to their Wainuiomata Road store because of customer demand.

“They said we were missing one thing out of the store and that was Lotto.”

Hemal and his wife Hemali have owned the store for the past fi ve years.

Earlier this year, they reno-vated the store.

When Hemal took owner-ship of the dairy, there was a Fish and Chip shop next door but with the renovations they knocked out the wall separating the two stores and

extended the dairy. He says they now have a

lot more space to work with. Hemal says they have more

plans to add more to the store but Lotto was the fi rst priority.

He says the rest is a secret for now.

Hemal says they already have regular Lotto custom-ers.

“Customers are so happy.“It’s quite handy for them.” They had been trying to

get Lotto for a while but the process to get it took a long time.

Manager Hitarthi Gandhi says she is very excited about the changes.

“We would just like to wel-come everyone to our store.”

Men around the country started the weekend clean shaven as Movember 2013 kicks off. Last year more than 15,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sista’s from across New Zealand registered and raised more than $1.57 million for Mo-vember partners, the Cancer Society and Mental Health Foundation.Movember country manager Rob Dunne says this year he wants to see more than 18,000 Kiwis get involved with the month of moustachery. The New Zealand Movember team works with their charity partners to ensure funding gets to the programs that count.“It’s amazing how many people grow a moustache during Movember, and this year we want to get as many of those people we can to register at Movember.com,” he says.“Movember is about creating conversa-tion and a strong community of under-standing around men’s health issues. The funds New Zealand raised in 2012 have gone directly to our partners, and we’re excited to see what we can contribute again this year,” says Dunne. Register now at www.movember.com.

By Rhiannon McConnellChildren at Sun Valley Kindergarten shared a tradi-

tional Indian meal in celebration of the Indian Festival of Diwali last Friday.

Teacher Meera Balaji moved to New Zealand from India fi ve years ago and says it was great to celebrate at the kindergarten.

“This is a huge part of my culture. “It’s just welcoming prosperity to the kindergarten.” Diwali, or the festival of lights, is a fi ve day Hindu

festival that signifi es the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

“It brings peace and prosperity,” Meera says. Meera wore a traditional sari and says the children

were asking questions all morning. “The children have been so welcoming and inter-

ested.”Meera says the children wanted to learn. “The children have started talking about the different

cultures. “They seem to value and appreciate everything.” Meera made cheese roti, jera rice and butter chicken

to celebrate the festival. Parents came in to celebrate with the kindergarten. “It’s just valuing, acknowledging and respecting other

cultures,” Meera says.

Sun Valley teaches children Diwali

Zoey Kumar, 3, and Zayan Singh, 4, wore traditional Indian outfi ts to celebrate Diwali last Friday.

A 23-year-old South Auckland man appeared in court yesterday charged with the murder of a Wainuiomata hairdresser. Huri King-Mosen, 24, was found dead on the fl oor of his Wainuio-mata residence last Tuesday afternoon with minor injuries to his head.Mr King-Mosen was found behind a door at the home, located on Puri Street. Police believe the injuries to his head were the likely cause of death. A man was arrested Monday afternoon and was the former partner of the daughter who lived at the property.Police would like to hear from anyone who saw the man’s grey Nissan Bluebird sedan, registration BCK596, in Wainuio-mata on Monday. The house had no signs of a break in. Huri King-Mosen, 24, has been de-scribed as “the softest, gentlest, kindest person” by his boss at Shazly Experi-ence Hair and Day Spa in Lower Hutt.

This week I had the privilege of speaking at the Wainuiomata High School Sports Awards as a past student and the reporter at the Wainuiomata News.

As I was preparing for the night, I began thinking about the role sports plays in our community and how it can bring us together.

This year we have seen the successes of so many talented young people.

I have followed Montaya Wharehinga’s success. I wrote about her conquering tragedy when her roommate died while in Tahiti and how despite the cir-cumstances she pushed through to do well in her sport.

One of my highlights was seeing the success of the girl’s cricket team.

They took a group of girls who

had never played cricket before and went on to win the Hutt Valley grade.

Last Thursday evening I was there to witness all their hard work recognised. Sadly, the school was not able to award a sportsman of the year because none of the young men met all the criteria.

This brings me to the success of Stephanie Hoare. When I fi rst interviewed Stephanie she impressed me not just with her ability to push through the pain of an injury to be picked for a national team, but also with her dedication to doing well in her studies. So often students pick sports over study, but Stephanie recognised how important doing well in her studies was to her future success.

To name a few more successes, Keegan O’Kane, a national champ who attended the Box-ing Junior World Champs, Joel Carman, who broke the 20 year Hutt Valley Athletics 3000m junior boys record, Matthew Markland and his success in becoming a Skateboard Champ, Shanice Toelupe, who made the NZ Maori Hockey team and

Channelle Kohika-Skipper who made the New Zealand Sevens development team.

When I spoke at the awards I told the crowd about my sporting history, or should we say, lack of it.

The extent of my sporting career existed of playing softball in intermediate and being made to wear a helmet each week because some how the ball found my head in every game. I played soccer when I was fi ve but once I realized I was the only girl in the team, well, that was the end of that. My biggest sporting success was coaching gymnastics during high school.

While I have never been any good at sports, I have seen the power of sports to inspire, encourage and rally together a community.

By Rhiannon McConnellThree Wainuiomata Com-

munity groups have received large donations as part of the Warehouse’s scheme for shop-pers to choose which charity their 10 cents bag donations go to.

The Warehouse Wainuio-mata customers had the choice of Wainuiomata food bank, Wainuiomata community patrol and Wainuiomata Vol-unteer Fire Brigade.

Service Team leader Paige Beattie says that although the Bags for Good campaign is not new to the store, it is great to now be able to involve custom-ers in the donation process.

“We are thrilled to be lending our support to three local com-munity groups that enhance the lives of young families and young people. Each of the groups do amazing work in our local community so we hope the money raised will

help to make a difference to the lives of those they help and support.”

She says she was really happy to see how much they were giving away compared to some of the other stores.

“It shows that our customers are backing the fundraising we are doing.

“It’s really good.” The Wainuiomata Volunteer

Fire Brigade received the larg-est amount of $857.12 followed by the food bank, $653.19 and community patrol, $475.05.

Every six months, the pro-ceeds of the plastic bag pur-chases are divided between the three local community groups according to how the tokens have been allocated by customers.

Church administrator and food bank coordinator Mi-chelle Wipane says they are very grateful for the donation.

“It’s a big help especially at

this time of the year when families struggle.”She says the Christmas season is a time when

they need lots of help. “Any donations make a difference.“It just helps families to get through the tough

weeks.”Fire Brigade Deputy Chief Laurence Waiwai

says there is always a need for donations at the station so having the extra money is great.

“It means plenty to us that the Warehouse is supporting a volunteer organization.”

Volunteer Nicky Ryder and Michelle Wipane accept the cheque for the food bank from Paige Beattie.

CEO has assured people at the Wainuiomata Business Breakfast that the Chamber wants to see Wainuiomata grow.

Hutt Valley Chamber of Com-merce CEO Mark Futter says they want to focus more on Wainuiomata.

“We are focusing on the grass roots.”

He says the chamber is focusing on promoting the Hutt Valley as technology Valley.

He says Wainuiomata needs to be focusing on creating more business and bringing people to the valley to avoid losing its youth.

“You need to attract young people

with families.“It’s not too far to come.” He says Wainuiomata also needs

to focus on sustainability. Mark worked as Upper Hutt City

Council’s economic development manager for the past two years before being elected to be CEO of the chamber earlier this year.

The monthly Business Breakfast, which was run by Development Wainuiomata, was well-attended.

Debra’s Carpets won business of the month.

LETTERS to the editor

Dear Ed,I read with interest your ar-

ticle (October 30) regarding the new Caltex managers’ plans.

I wish to express the ab-solutely fantastic service that a member of my family received from the mechanics at that site.

On October 26, my step-father (moving to Samoa the next day) had two new tyres put on his car in Lower Hutt, in safety preparation for lending it to his son.

While waiting there, I noticed that the warrant had expired.

We went past Caltex Wai-

nuiomata and noticed that they didn’t close until 4pm.

Without an appointment, but conscious of my brothers safety they did a warrant on the spot.

Unfortunately, they didn’t have a part that they needed.

My mechanic would have stated something along the lines of “ its a long weekend, we close at 4pm, we should be able to get a part for you on Tuesday.”

The mechanic at Wainuio-mata Caltex, however, drove to Lower Hutt and purchased the part.

They didn’t finish with the car until 5.30pm, at no

extra cost.Furthermore, amongst the

chaos, the warrant sticker was not attached to the car, so it was delivered, by hand, to my home the next day, being a Sunday.

He even stated that if taking it to my brother in Welling-ton was a problem, he was happy to take it in to him.

I for one have now divorced my mechanic, and I hope after reading this above and beyond story, others will do the same and support those that are clearly willing to support us.

Regards, Sonia Riches

The Main Road end of Moores Valley Road was part of the original Homedale Village shopping area, a place to catch up with your neighbours whilst getting the household provisions.

Shops in the area in the 1940-50’s included The Shady Dell Dairy, with a hairdressers behind and a Sports Bar out the back of the same building, the fi rst Post Offi ce on the same side of the road (where the Chinese Takeaways is now), a Butchery, and Chemist. At the corner on the other side of the road was the General Store/Milk Bar – the same building that Wonderland Records now

operates from. In those days grocery shops were not allowed to open on weekends, so they had two doors side by side, one to the General Store and the other to the Milk Bar. This allowed for the closure of the grocery side on weekends.

Moores Valley was named after George Moore, a Wellington merchant who owned property in the Valley in the 1850’s.

Article and photos are courtesy of The Wainuiomata Historical Museum Society. The Museum is in the grounds of the Wai-nuiomata Primary School and is open on Sunday’s from 2-4pm.

Are you man enough?

Dear Ed, I was so shocked to read

the story in last week’s paper about the puppies being stolen.

I could not believe it was family members who took them!

What is our world com-ing to?

Our young people need

to be busier to keep them out of trouble.

I do not know what the answer to this problem is but we do need to do something.

Families need to take responsibility for the ac-tions of their children.

We cannot continue down this road or we will

end up with a dangerous society.

Perhaps we should add more free community programs for our youth to encourage them off the streets.

Kind regards,Concerned member of the public.

By Rhiannon McConnellA lack of members has resulted

in the Wainuiomata Golden Girls leisure marching team disbanding.

Group secretary and treasurer Bev Isaac says she has come to terms with the demise of the group.

“I’ve resigned to the fact now. “We just don’t seem to be able to

attract any new members.” The team have slowly declined in

membership and made the decision to stop after getting down to four members.

“We couldn’t continue. “It’s a bit hard to march a march

with only four members.” Bev says fundraising has been

hard with such a small team. She says the group’s bank account

has been closed and the left over funds have been given to the food bank.

“We are not taking any money out

of the funds.” The group will be missed at this

year’s Wainuiomata Christmas parade, where they have always marched.

The group marched together for the last time in Napier at the end of September.

“It is actually really sad,” Bev says.

Bev has been a member of the team for six years but she says one member has been part of the Golden Girls since its start in 1991.

Bev, along with other members, has joined the Avalon Supremes to continue marching.

“The remaining team members aren’t wanting to give up march-ing.”

The Golden Girls used the Rugby Club for marching practice.

“We appreciate everything they have done for us.”

Marching team disbands due to membership lack

Group secretary and treasurer Bev Isaac is saddened that the marching team will no longer exist.

Help your wounds heal faster

Unichem Clive’s Pharmacy20-21 Queen Street, Wainuiomata. (04) 564 8618 www.clives.co.nz

Unichem Clives Pharmacy

Wounds are a common part of everyday life, with accidents leading to cuts and scratches, grazes, lacerations, blisters and sometimes burns. These can happen no matter how careful we are or how organised our homes or workplaces can be. A wound occurs when a physical injury to the body breaks the skin or a mucous membrane. The body responds immediately and begins repairing the wound with the skin closing up and trying to return to normal as soon as possible.

In the past many wounds have been “fi xed” with a plaster, the multipurpose plastic dressing strip. These are fi ne for small scratches and cuts but there are now many more dressings available for the different types of wounds that can occur. In the past it was believed that wounds should be kept dry but now it is recommended that to help a wound heal well it should be kept moist. This is because a moist wound environment allows the skin cells to grow more quickly, thus healing and returning to normal in much less time.

The aim of wound care is to stop any bleeding, prevent infection and to restore the health of the tissue. With any wound once any bleeding is stopped it needs to be cleaned. If it is already a clean wound then warm running water or gauze soaked in saline is appropriate to be used. Next dry the area and apply the dressing. However if the wound is unclean and is contaminated with any dirt, gravel or foreign bodies then these need to be removed so that the wound does not become infected. It is necessary in these cases to use an antiseptic to wash the area and remove unwanted particles and debris.

It is important to try and prevent infection from occurring but if the area of the wound becomes swollen, red, hot and angry then it may be infected and you will need to see your doctor regarding antibiotics.

Wounds caused by burns may occur due to sunlight, fl ames from fi re, scalds, chemical or electrical sources. The affected area must be cooled immediately under cold running tap water for at least 20 to 30 minutes. The use of ice is not recommended in these cases. Burns can be superfi cial affecting only the top surface layer of skin or can be much more serious affecting many layers of tissues. Blisters should not be burst and fat, lotions or ointments should be avoided.

Wounds that are dressed and kept warm heal faster. Dressings also need to be kept clean and changed every few days or as often as necessary. See Clive and his team about the many types of dressings that are available and the most appropriate one for a particular wound or your fi rst aid kit.

If you are unsure how to take your medicine or have questions about any other aspect of your medicines, talk to any of the pharmacists at Clive's Unichem.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

With the arrival of spring and the warmer and often windier weather many people are now also being affected by hay fever.

This is a common condition with rates of hay fever in New Zealand being amongst the highest world-wide.

Hay fever can make people feel quite miserable, with symptoms of itchy eyes, runny nose, sniffl es, sneezes and headaches and often very similar symptoms to the com-mon cold.

Symptoms of hay fever may not last long and can be more severe at certain times of the day, such as being more severe in the morning or in the evening when pollen counts are highest, as well as when the weather is hot and humid.

Hay fever (also called allergic rhinitis) develops in some people because of an overactive immune system.

This causes them to have allergic reactions to certain substances in the environment, generally called allergens or ‘triggers’.

Pollens from flowers, grasses, trees and weeds are the most com-mon allergens.

“People who get hay fever at this time of year have what is known as seasonal allergic rhinitis”, advise Self Care pharmacists, “but not everyone with hay fever reacts to pollen only at springtime.

Many people suffer from hay fever symptoms all year round.

They can be sensitive to animal

dander (dead skin cells from their pets), mould, and the house dust mite – a microscopic animal that lives in the millions in our pillows, bedding, curtains and carpets”.

In addition, cigarette smoke (yours or someone else’s), chemical fumes and dusts in certain workplaces, and sudden temperature changes can make hay fever symptoms worse by irritating an already-sensitive nose.

Many hay fever sufferers also have other allergic conditions like asthma, eczema and food aller-gies - because of their over-active immune systems.

The good news is that hay fe-ver symptoms sometimes can be prevented and, usually, can be well-controlled.

“Effective treatments are avail-able”, say Self Care pharmacists, “but trying to avoid the things that ‘trigger’ your hay fever symptoms is a good fi rst step.

Ask us about the Hay fever fact card which has plenty of self care tips for avoiding pollens and other allergens.”

If avoiding ‘triggers’ is not pos-sible, antihistamine medicines can be effective.

These block the action of the chemical histamine which is re-leased in your body when you come into contact with an allergen.

There are many different antihis-tamines to choose from, which are available as pills to take, or as nasal sprays to use directly in the nose.

Some antihistamines can make

you sleepy and may affect your ability to drive.

It is important to get advice from your Self Care pharmacist regard-ing the best antihistamine for you.

Antihistamines help with runny noses, itchy throats and ears, and sneezing symptoms.

For blocked noses, other medicines can be used, such as decongestant nasal sprays - but the use of these is limited, usually only up to 3 days at a time because of the chance of congestion reoccurring.

There are also corticosteroid nasal sprays which are helpful for people with moderate-to-severe hay fever, and for those who get hay fever symptoms all year round.

Corticosteroid nasal sprays take a few days to work to full effect and should be used regularly eve-ryday, even when symptoms are not present.

They can be used for prevention but to be effective for this, they have to be started before you are in contact with the allergen.

Hay fever treatments are suc-cessful at relieving the irritating symptoms and are available from your Self Care pharmacy, so talk with your Self Care pharmacy team, and get your copy of the Hay fever fact card.

The shape and colour of your nails may be indicators of your health.

Pale or bluish nails may indicate anaemia. If the pink colour is slow to return when the nail is squeezed, it may be a sign of decreased circulation.

Clubbed nails shaped like the back of a spoon may mean cardiopulmonary disease or asthma.

Spoon nails which dip inwards could mean certain types of anaemia or injury.

Pitted nails with punched-out spots may signal psoriasis.

The Homedale Market was on Sa-tuday, with many turning out to roam the stalls.

There were accesory, jewlry, and cosmetic stalls, DVD and book stalls, toy stalls, garden and plant stalls, food stalls, and sweet treats.

Caleb Smith had a stall that show-cased his “stacking” ability, fundrais-ing for him to attend the World Champs in South Korea for stacking.

Residents enjoy market day

Pool open for summerLocals dusted off their swimming togs, doned

sun hats and slapped on the sunscreen as Wel-lington put on a beautiful day for the opening of the Wainuiomata Pool on Saturday.

Recreation Facilities Manager Stephen Keatley says the pool is a very popular summer location.

“Wainuiomata Pool is a great place for families.”

The pool has four heated outdoor pools situ-ated amongst rose gardens and shrub beds and surrounded by native bush. An 80-metre open air waterslide runs down a bush-clad slope mak-ing it a great place for kids to burn off energy.

“Add to that barbecues, which are great when the kids get hungry, an adult spa pool and a mini golf course and there really is something for everyone,” Stephen says.

Entry was free for opening day.Roving photographer Dan Taylor was there.

Heard around the poolside:

“It was a great day out with friends.”

“I love the water, it is so warm.”

“It’s a bit chilly when you get out...”

“Yay! Summer is nearly here!”

Awards night recognises all sporting achievements

Chanelle Kohika-Skipper was surprised when she took home three trophies from the sports awards on Thursday night.

The Year 12 student says she was hon-oured, and felt that the two or three hours of traning she does everyday after school had been recognised.

Chanelle won most valuable player for girls rugby, the fair play award, and the rugby sevens tournament trophy.

She was also named most improved player for the Premier Netball team.

This year Chanelle played rugby, sevens, volleyball, touch, and netball for the school.

Outside of school she has also played for the Wainuiomata Rugby Women team, is captain of the Wellington Secondary Schools team, has played for the NZ Rugby Sevens Development team, the Wellington Pride womens team, and the NZ Mixed Touch Elite Academy.

“Sports is just a passion. It gives me a chance to improve myself and open up,” Chanelle says.

“My team mates were encouraging me the whole way through,” she says.

From here, Chanelle says she hopes to

keep pushing herself and take her abilities to a higher level.

“You have to aim high to reach your goal. You have to have the right mindset,” she says.

the best female on the athletics team. Gemma played on the New Zealand
