X1Q4588H-AL270515 SUCCESS: REPORTERS’ HARD WORK RECOGNISED AT MDDA/SANLAM LOCAL MEDIA AWARDS TygerBurger is tops BEN BURGER T ygerBurger is once again the best free (corporate owned) newspaper in the country. The Bellville edition won this prestigious award at the 2014 MDDA/Sanlam Local Me- dia Awards dinner at Emperor’s Palace in Gauteng last Friday. During these awards, the best local newspapers, radio and TV sta- tions and their reporters are recognised for their hard work. Monique Duval, former reporter for Peo- ple’s Post, TygerBurger’s sister publication, and now TygerBurger reporter, won the award for Best Photography: Features and Portraits. The awards are considered the Os- cars of the local media industry and is the only competition where local newspapers and journalists from different media houses and owners from all over the country compe- te against each other. Many other journalists from TygerBurger and People’s Post were among the Top 10 and even the Top 3 in various categories. Magriet Theron of the Parow edition of Ty- gerBurger was among the Top 3 news photo- graphers, with André Bakkes of TygerBur- ger’s Milnerton and Table View editions in the Top 3 for sport photos. Carina Roux, pho- tographer of WP Media which publishes Ty- gerBurger, People’s Post and City Vision, was in the Top 3 for Photographer of the Year. Samatha Lee, reporter for the Mitchell’s Plain edition of People’s Post, Desireé Rorke, reporter for TygerBurger’s Brackenfell and Kraaifontein editions and Richard Roberts, reporter for TygerBurger’s Eerste River and Kuils River editions, were among the Top 10 in the Focus on People: Human Interest wri- ting category. TygerBurger’s Brackenfell edition was also in the Top 3 for the best front page (corporate owned free newspaper). Marita Meyer, group editor of WP Media, said that she is extremely proud of her team. “Everyone works very hard and under huge pressure, so it is quite rewarding when we are recognised for this hard work.” WP Media’s Top 3 finalists are here with Marita Meyer, group editor, at the MDDA/Sanlam Local Media Awards dinner in Gauteng. From left are Carina Roux, Monique Duval, Meyer, Stehan Schoeman, Magriet Theron and André Bakkes. A collage of pictures from the lens of TygerBurger’s Parow reporter, Magriet Theron, appears on Page 2.

Die reeks verhaaltjies oor Gerrie Gemmer-

brood is genspireer deur Hanlie Brynard-Bo-

tha se kleinseun, Luke Geddes, s sy.

Brynard-Botha het onlangs die jongste in

di reeks boekies by die Bellville-biblioteek

bekendgestel en het aan TygerBurger meer

vertel oor die oorsprong van di kleurvolle

    reeks.

daarvoor was n oorspronklike, eg Suid-Afri-

    kaanse storie nodig, vertel sy.

In hierdie storie word Gerrie Gemmer-

brood gebore en gaan hy op verskillende

avonture, wat in die reeks boekies vertel

    word.

    motor of by die huis.

Brynard-Botha woon al die afgelope 35 jaar

    in Boston in Bellville.

deer. Brynard-Botha het vir jare Afrikaans

onderrig aan die Cambridge High School in

    Oos-London.

V Die boekies kan bestel word van www.booksdirec

tsa.com, en daar is n sagte speelding beskikbaar by

    Parow in pictures

    Parow journalist Magriet

    Theron was recently honou

red at the Sanlam local me

dia awards as a finalist in the

    category for news photogra

phy. Here are some of the

    news highlights in pictures of

    Parow she snapped during

    the past year.

Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu visited the Tygerberg Childrens Hospital for their

    annual interdenominational church service.

Ward J3 at Tygerberg Hospital is equip

ped for 25 neonatal babies that weigh as

little as 600 g, but these little ones mothers

sometimes spend months in a chair next to

their cots. A group of women from Durbanvil

le managed to get sponsorships to furnish

this ward with ten beds for mothers like

Nwabisa Lolekwa, pictured here with her

    unnamed baby.

Service with a smile. This is the group of men and women of the Tygerberg Meals on

Wheels who are responsible for making and delivering thousands of meals per week for the aged

and the hungry throughout the northern suburbs. This centre runs entirely on sponsorships.

Down with drug dealers! A motorcade

of more than 20 vehicles drove slowly

through the drugriddled streets of Parow in

July to spread the word that drugs will not

    be tolerated here any more.

The circus comes to town. Watching the faces of the audience at McClaren circus is almost

as enjoyable as watching the circus itself. Here a little girl hides in her fathers arms as an

acrobat performs a death defying act in mid air.

A task team to keep the business cogs of

Bellvilles CBD turningwell into the future,

was launched by various partners lastWed-

    nesday.

The team, led by the City and Greater Ty-

gerberg Partnership (GTP), met with local

business and other key representatives for

the launch of the new business retention

    and expansion programme.

Also part of the team are the Voortrekker

    Road Corridor Improvement District, en-

trepreneur Craig Kensley, manager of the

Middestad Mall, Lameesa Modak, and vice-

chairperson of the Somali Business Ow-

    ners Association, Abdullahi Ali Hassan.

Between them, the team devised a survey

intended for local businesses and shop ow-

ners, in which they can identify the most

    pressing challenges and key opportunities

for the betterment of the business environ-

    ment in the CBD.

GTP CEO Chris OConnor shared his or-

ganisations vision and explained how the

involvement and ideas of local businesspeo-

ple were critical to improving the Bellville

    business area.

Garreth Bloor, the Citys Mayco member

for Tourism, Events and Economic Deve-

lopment who attended the launch, said the

Citywas excited to see hands being reached

out and taken towards building a better bu-

    siness climate in Bellvilles CBD.

The teams next step will be drawing up

an action plan that is to be drafted from the

local business input gathered through the

    survey.

OConnor appealed to the business ow-

ners at the launch to sign up to participate

in the survey, and to encourage others to

    follow suit.

    P

    hone calls, banking, watching televi-

sion or attending classes are all tasks

    that seem straightforward tomost peo-

ple, but for people suffering hearing loss,

    they are almost impossible.

But a local non-profit organisation ismak-

    ing their concerns heard.

The Association for Hearing Loss, Acces-

sibility and Development (AHLAD) in Mil-

nerton has raised concerns about the daily

    struggles hearing impaired people suffer.

    ChairpersonMichele Tonks said since the

association was founded they have had an

uphill struggle to make decision makers

    hear their plight.

Simply, she explains almost every task is

a problem from phone calls to banking.

Those suffering from hearing loss are

    marginalised in institutions, facilities or

public spaces. A lot is being done to accom-

modate physically disabled people in this

country, but those suffering from hearing

    loss are ignored, she says.

Tonks says despite several attempts to

speak to authorities, businesses and institu-

tions, very few have acknowledged the need

to accommodate those with hearing loss.

As an example, she says her daughter (30)

who has a cochlear implant, faces several

    daily challenges.

She cant go to the bank because there is

no loop system, so she cant hear the teller.

If she is in an accident she cannot call the

    emergency numbers because she cannot

hear them. While she is capable of doing

these simple tasks on her own, she is disa-

    bled by her hearing.

    In consultationwithmembers, Tonks says

they discovered the access to basic services

    was a common concern.

    They contacted various service providers

    including banks, hotels, academic institu-

tions and emergency services and proposed

    alternative systems.

These include the installation of loop sys-

tems and SMS lineswhich helps hearing-im-

    paired people communicate effectively.

However, the response has been dismal.

To counter this, the association will be

holding a public meeting to garner support

    from affected citizens.

Tonks says the organisation plans to roll-

    out educational programmes and awareness

campaigns for those affected and the public

on what products are available to them.

The meeting will be held at Bothasig Li-

brary on Saturday 30 May at 09:30.

Among the speakers are Marie du Toit

who is involved with children with hearing

loss. She will speak about Music Matters, a

training course which focuses on the childs

    ability tohear different instruments andme-

    lodic lines separately.

Lesley Shaw will speak on the induction

loop system and RSG presenter Fanie du

Toit will speak on hearing loss and disabili-

    ty.

V The meeting is open to all and entry is free. For

    more information email [email protected].

Writer and lecturer Dale Carnegie once said:

Today is life . . .Make the most of today. Get

interested in something. Shake yourself awa-

ke. Develop a hobby. Let the winds of enthu-

siasm sweep through you. Live today with

    gusto.

The owner of Clowns Hobbies, Wessie van

    der Westhuizen, concurs with Carnegie.

In todays rat-race society we all need

something to give us the escape and enjoy-

ment we deserve. Something to captivate the

    mind, says Wessie.

Get a hobby, get a life!

Once you take up a new hobby you are

using your free time more productively. For

youngsters, it exposes them to somany other

aspects of life. Normally when you take up

a hobby you connect with other like-minded

people, whether at informal gatherings or at

clubs or associations. You get so much more

out of a hobby than you would think.

Wessie points out as an example the free

monthly workshops he hosts to develop the

skills of avid scale model builders. Wessie ur-

ges that before committing to any particular

hobby, you should research it thoroughly

rather than spending money on something

that will ultimately let you down.

There is no better place to start than chat-

ting to one of the friendly andknowledgeable

staff at Clowns Hobbies to see which hobby

    captivates your mind.

Clowns Hobbies recently opened a brand

new, well-stocked superstore in the heart of

Bellville, just off the N1, for your shopping

    convenience.

At Clowns Hobbies they specialise in the

    sale of radio-controlledmodels, which ranges

from cars and boats to aircraft and helicop-

ters. They also sell plastic models and Die-

Cast models, to name but a few.

The huge new store also features a flight

simulator for their customers to try their

    hand at.

According to Wessie, by far the hottest

trend these days, are drones or aerial came-

ra platforms, which aremainly used for aerial

    photography, with applications for estate

agents, security companies, building and con-

    struction, amateur and professional photo-

    graphers, farmmanagement and game coun-

    ting.

Clowns Hobbies is situated at 35A Nor-

thumberland Road, Bellville. One can contact

them via email at [email protected]

    or give them a call on 021 945 1296/3016.

You can also find them on Facebook.

Wessie concludes: Our business is founded

on integrity and good value, and I invite you

to come see why Clowns Hobbies is one of

the oldest and most successful hobby stores

    in the country.

    sold by them.

The dealer was taken into custody for the

receiving and selling of stolen property.

He appeared in the Bellville Magistrate

Members of the PWP neighbourhood watch spent their Saturday talking to residents and

security companies about fighting crime in the area.

    Watch takes to the streets

    The Panorama,Welgelegen, Plattekloof and

    Kleinbosch (PWP) neighbourhood watch

had an awareness campaign on 23 May in

Panorama, as this is the area most affected

    by crime.

Thewatch split up and took to the streets,

interacting with residents by handing out

flyers, key rings or bags of sweets and even

responding to an incident concerning a sto-

len cell phone along the way.

    Afterwards, Parowpolice sectormanager

The law enforcement agency tasked with

making the Voortrekker Road Corridor sa-

fer, the VRCID, has confiscated an array of

    weapons on their nightly patrols.

Derek Bock, operational head of the

VRCID, told TygerBurger their team has

been busy conducting these nightly crime

prevention operations in Bellville and Pa-

    row for the past fortnight.

Their operations started from 03:00 on-

    wards, he said.

During these operations, people found to

be sleeping on public or private property

    are woken up and searched.

For the searches we use our two dedica-

ted law enforcement officers so as to stay

within the bounds of the law, he said.

During these operations they also had the

    organisations social developmentmanager

on board to engage with the homeless and

offer them assistance to get off the streets.

Sadly, this is refused, Bock said.

TheVRCIDs searches yielded an array of

weapons ranging from knives to knobkie-

    ries and axes, Bock said.

Part of these operations is to discourage

clients of prostitutes to make use of their

    services.

This has resulted in a verbal onslaught

by the prostitutes onmy staff; wewill howe-

ver not be deterred by their swearing at our

    staff, Bock said.

Wreld-hipertensiedag is op Sondag 17 Mei

gevier. Volgens statistiek wat deur die Uni-

    versiteit Stellenbosch se mediese fakulteit

uitgereik is, veroorsaak ho bloeddruk elke

dag na raming 130 hart- en 240 beroerte-aan-

    valle in Suid-Afrika.

Meer as tien

    miljoen Suid-Afrikaners ly aan chroniese

ho bloeddruk, ook bekend as hipertensie.

    en middel-inkomstelande as in ho-inkom-

stelande, het dr. Ahmed Abulfathi van die

US se fakulteit geneeskunde en gesond-

heidswetenskappe, in die aanloop tot W-

    reld-hipertensiedag ges. Vanjaar se tema

    was Ken jou syfers.

Abulfathi s ondanks die ernstige nage-

volge soos hartaanvalle, beroerte en nier-

versaking, toon hipertensie oor die alge-

meen geen simptomenie en is slegs 27%van

    hipertensielyers in sub-Sahara-Afrika be-

    slegs 18% behandeling daarvoor.

In die meeste gevalle word hipertensie

    veroorsaak deur n wisselwerking tussen

    genetiese en omgewingsfaktore, s hy.
