Die Sondagaand was Rick se familie al- mal by hom by die Mediclinic N1 Stad toe hy gesterf het. My eer- ste indrukke van hom was dat hy ’n aantrek- like, vriendelike, behulpsame, lojale en or- dentlike man is,” brei Martha uit. “Ons pa was ’n gesinsman. In last week’s newspaper in the articleentitled “Police seek witnesses followinghit and run incident”, TygerBurgerincorrectly stated that it was a hit and runaccident. The person behind the wheel did not flee

the scene. Police are nonetheless lookingfor more eye-witnesses to the accident.

Tow trucks ‘are essential’ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

The dark underbelly of the tow truck in-dustry was once again brought to thefore after TygerBurger reported on an

objectionable saga in the Parow edition on11 May.A reader’s vehicle was towed away after

an accident and the release fee was foundto be “outrageous”.In response to the article the South Afri-

can Towing and Recovery Association (Sa-tra) contacted the newspaper and revealedsome of the shocking things that unscrupu-lous tow truck companies get up to.Satra chairperson, André van derMerwe,

elaborates: “Some operators rely on the hec-tic atmosphere and the urgency. The opera-

tor might be working for one company andhave you sign the towing slip of another. This might mean your vehicle gets towed toan unknown destination. Some don’t havecomprehensive tow slips, meaning there isno record of all the things in your car at thetime of tit being towed away. The sweetestguy you’ve ever seen can be standing infront of you after the accident and then yourvehicle is taken to a place with exorbitantrelease fees. This is not new. It’s been goingon for a century.”Satra believes in order for the towing and

recovery industry to self regulate effective-ly, the industry needs to achieve sustaina-ble growth and maintain high standards ofservice delivery, ethics and integrity.“If you’re in an accident, phone us andwe

will tell you if a particular operator is trust-

worthy. Unfortunately we get many phonecalls long after the carwas towed – after theperson was overcharged.”Van derMerwe adds that they have a rela-

tionship with most insurance companiesand can give you a clear indication of whoto use as per your insurance. This, however, is another issue facing

South Africa’s roads.“Only 35% of all vehicles are insured, of

which only 25% are fully insured,” he says.Satra maintains that the responsibility

does not only lie with tow truck operatorsto act with integrity, but also for the publicto empower themselves with knowledge tomake informed decisions.“Whether you have insurance or not,

there are some things to look out for if youwere involved in an accident,” he says.“Avoiddealingwith anoperatorwhodoes

not have signage on his vehicle. Make surethe name on the towing slip correspondswith this name. Know your rights.”One can exercise one’s freedom of choice

and simply refuse an operator from towingaway your car if you feel uneasy.Van der Merwe says there are many tales

of horror when it comes to how operatorstreat the public or one another. Incidents ofassault, intimidationand evenmurderhavebeen reported. He emphasises though thatthe role of a tow truckoperator is a vital one.“Operators are not an emergency service;

they are an essential service. They are oftenthe first to arrive on the scene of an acci-dent. They immediately find out if anyoneis hurt, notify authorities and emergencyservices and ensure the scene is safe toavoid a second accident.”Van der Merwe concludes that the best

way for the public to stay informed aboutthe industry is to join Satra’s Facebookgroup or go to their website.“There are so many stories reported on

there you wouldn’t believe!”V For more information on how you can empoweryourself and what “tow truck tricks of the trade”to look out for, go to www.satra.co.za. Also, save SA-TRA’s emergency number 0861 072 872 on yourphone for advice when you need it most.

Be on the lookout for tow truck operators that display no signage on the vehicle.

Burning issue: Firefighters from The City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue services recently visited patients at the Tygerberg Hospital Burns Unit, the only adult Burns Unit in the Western Cape, in aid of National Burns Awareness Week. A lot of knowledge was shared with the patients wholistened in anticipation and asked questions at the end of the session. The patients were also invited to the fire engine to have a look at theequipment used by these brave men and women who head into burning buildings and homes while everyone else runs out.

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

Disregarding stop signs are becomingamassive concern for authorities androad users who abide by the rules.

According to Mayco member for safetyand security, JP Smith, nearly 14 500 fineswere issued for driving offences across themetropole in January, February andMarch.

Many of these fines were issued for thefailure to stop at a stop street, which carriesa punishment of R1500.

Smith responded to TygerBurger’s que-ries relating to the junction on Rothschildand Malmesbury roads, where a concernedreader pointed out that many vehicles nev-er come to a full stop at the stop street.

The reader’s particular concern is thatthere is a school nearby (Panorama Prima-ry) and that a childmight get injured tryingto cross the road. This transgression is, according to local

ward councillor Sakkie Pretorius, a prob-lem at every single stop street in the Cityof Cape Town’s 10 500km road network.

“This ismore than just a lackof disciplinebydrivers. It is totallyunacceptable,” statesPretorius.

“It is a huge problem for the underre-sourced traffic department. They can’t beeverywhere at once. If just one or two per-cent of road users disobey the rules, thenwe can do something about it, butwhat hap-pens if four or five percent follow suit? Itwill be chaos on our roads.”

Unfortunately more than 5% of driversfail to come to a complete stop at a stop

street.Says Smith: “Cape Town

Traffic Services tries to pro-actively enforce the provi-sions of the National RoadTraffic Act as far as possible, but itmust be understood thatwe have limited resources. Itis also a myth that more re-sources will deal with theproblem. Ultimately, driverbehaviour is theonly realwayto curb this and other trans-gressions that have becomecommonplace.“Any transgression in

terms of the law is a concern. However, we are particularlyconcerned about the disre-gard for traffic signs in resi-dential areas. This puts oth-er road users and the generalpublic inharm’sway, particu-larly children who are mostvulnerable.”Panorama Primary’s prin-

cipal, AntonMostert, says thetraffic around the school isunderstandably particularlyheavy just before and after school hours.“We can only ask for visible enforcement

by authorities, provide supervised cross-ings and educate the children about pedes-trian safety. I think all schools strugglewith the same problems, such as speeding,”he explains. The disregard of rules in Malmesbury

Road has been a headache for many years.Smith asks road users to be considerate

when they are behind the wheel, but untilthat day arrives, the best route availablefor residents to assist officers is to reportany traffic issues to 021 596 1999, in orderto assist in directing enforcement opera-tions.

Smith concludes: “Members of the publiccan also approach their local subcouncil tolobby for traffic calming measures likespeed humps and pedestrian crossings.”

Surviving bullyism in small steps

Steven Taylor (right) came from small begin-nings and huge challenges to where he istoday. Here he is with Robbie Fowler, a formerEngland football player.

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

Every day he silently built up his confi-dence, only for his classmates to breakit down again.

But he was a survivor. The boy had bigdreams and huge challenges – for one, henever knew his father. He spent his earliest years in Cape Town,

moved to England where he was the “newkid in class”, and moved back to South Afri-ca two years later.Once again he was categorised by other

children as being different.FromEdgemead Primary hewent to Both-

asig and then later toBosmansdamHigh, butchanging schools only prolonged his agony.Steven Taylor (32) now looks back on his

school days as something he had to endureto understand bullies. He shares the pain ofthe odd one out; the bane of more popularboys.Today theman from theDeGrendel distri-

bution area is a well-known radio personali-ty that uses his experience to motivateothers who might be staring down the dark

tunnel of bullyism.“It took me a while, but I grew up to be

a survivor. I know what it feels like to lackconfidence and how hard it is to build it upagain. I know what impact it has on yourmental health. Some even consider suicideas the only escape! Life is not easy. Todaybullies are the norm, not the exception,” heexplains.Over his toughest years Steven formulat-

ed a plan how to counter the devastating ef-fects of a loss of confidence.“You need to set yourself small goals and

when you complete it, it makes you strong-er,” continues Steven and adds that oneshould listen to no-onewho tries to deter youfrom reaching these little goals. His smaller goalshavebecomebigger ones

over the years. He has met all the ministersand most of the presidents, countless celeb-rities and even became a celebrity himself.“At the age of 16 I started on community

radio at Bush Radio, then moved onto UCTRadio and never looked back. My new TVshow will air every Saturday evening onDeen TV which goes out on Open View HDand StarSat. It has taken me over 15 years

to get to where I am now but it proves thatif you want something and keep pushingyourself then you can achieve anything!”Today he assists where he can to motivate

youngsters and help them get through diffi-cult times. He gives them advice and hopeand lives to be a role model to all the down-trodden soulswho drag themselves to schoolin the morning.“It is so important to play an active role

in society. Some try to forget their past ... Ilearned years later that the father of one par-ticular bullywas in jail and then realised thebully was just acting out his frustration inschool. Being a bully isn’t necessarily his orher fault. One might discover that their par-ents don’t spend enough time with them. So-cial ills are at the root of most bullies.”Steven has reached so many of his goals

that hehas become stronger thanhe ever im-agined.There will, however, always be a goal to

aspire to, and his lies in politics.“I have a dream,” he concludes. “One

day ... one day I want to be president!”Steven has a knack of reaching his goals,

so perhaps there ishope forSouthAfricayet!

The construction of Cheré Botha’s newschool in Meerlust Street, Oak Glen, Bell-ville is progressing well with most of theearthmoving having been completed andthe laying of foundations now in progress. The planned completion date for the

project is April 2017 and the school is hop-ing to move in during July next year.Nick Davies, the chairman of the Project

Steering Committee, is thrilled with theprogress. “As a parent and amember of theCheréBothaSGBI cannot tell youhowhap-py we all are about Cheré Botha’s newhome. Our educators have really been bat-tling to run a school on three different re-mote sites. To have a single location wherewe can all be together in a customdesignedschool with the correct facilities is incredi-bly exciting. To have been given this beau-

tiful site in such a lovely and friendly sub-urb is the cherry on top. Our children aregoing to love it here.” He went on to sayhow grateful Cheré Botha is to their newneighbours who have had to put up witha lot of inconvenience in the early stagesof the construction. “Theheavymachineryand the sand have made life quite unpleas-ant for our neighbours and we would liketo thank them for their patience andunder-standing.” One positive aspect of the con-struction work is that the contractors arerequired to use a certain percentage of thelocal labour force and anyone interested inworking on the project should get in touchwith Coenie Lourens, the community liai-son officer.V Interested parties can contact him on 021 8395186

The cost of the upgrading of the BellvilleCivic Centre in Voortrekker Road, which iscurrentlyunderway, will amount to approx-imately R500 000 once completed.

Last week on Friday 20 May, Clive Justusplanted the last of the 24 roses as part of thelandscaping near the clock.

The cost estimation of the project was de-termined after the facilities managementdepartment of the City of Cape Town did athorough assessment of the Bellville CivicHall at the end of February to determinewhat repairs andmaintenance needed to bedone. In a phased implementation plan, pri-ority has been given to the safety aspects in-side the hall. The stabilisation of the theatre stage, re-

placement of flying bars and lighting, re-pairs to the fire curtain and replacement ofall hoisting equipment were prioritised toensure compliance in terms of the Healthand Safety legislation.“Over theyears the ropesweredeteriorat-

ing and had to be replaced,” said Justus, chairperson of Subcouncil 6.“The lighting on stage was replaced with

energy efficient lights, and on 1 June allelectrical equipment will be connected. Webought a generator and whenever there isloadshedding or an outage, it won’t affectthe power supply,” he said.

The phase two upgrades will include therefurbishment and interior decoration ofthe theatre and toilets. The lighting and up-holstery of the 750 seats will also receive at-tention.

External improvements include land-scaping, repairs to the clock tower and foun-tain. Paving will be done in the new finan-cial year and that includes the entrance tothe civic as well. The fountain and the clock tower will be

revamped as part of the external improve-ments.

A contractor was appointed on Friday 20May to do the landscaping.

sies.“My ander stokperdjie

is sing. Ek dood daaroor.

As kindhet ek talle boeke verslind, maarmy gun-stelingskrywers was Dricky Beukes enEna Murray.

You eat an elephant bite by bite. Toraise money for a worthy cause muchbigger than an elephant, you can now

do “tile by tile”.Every year Heidi Ansley, owner of the Pi-

et-my-Vrou mosaic studio in the Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville and her stu-dents do a special mosaic project in aid ofcharity. This year the proceeds will go tothe Cape Kidney Association, a non-profitorganisation that helps destitute renal anddialysis patients with support ranging frommonthly food parcels to travel allowancesto get to the hospital.

The choice of charity was sparked byCindy de Beer from Bellville, who has beenliving on dialysis for 36 years.

“Cindy is a private patient, but servingon our committee, and knowing the plightof renal failure and the dialysis, she feelsthe need to assist patients that are not asfortunate as her to have a medical aid,” saysMolly Fabé, executive director of the CapeKidney Association. On average a hemodi-alysis treatment lasts about four hours andis done three times per week.

The project was launched at the openingof the studio’s yearly exhibition on Tuesday10 May and to date has raised R13 000.

The students have set up a mosaic workstation in the gallery area. Guests can spon-sor a glass tile for R20, or five for R100, andbecome part of creating a beautiful art-work. All it takes is applying a thin layerof glue to the back of the glass tile and plac-ing it securely next to one already stuckdown.

The project runs until Wednesday 8 June. The Rust-en-Vrede Gallery is open Mon-days to Fridays from 09:00 to 17:00 (until16:00 from 1 June) and Saturdays until 13:00.V Contact the Rust-en-Vrede gallery on021 976 4691.

So het my ma altyd haar kinders

vermaan. Let op die waarskuwingstekensvoordat jy iets aanpak. As koerantmens moet ons gedurig

waarsku: Moenie oor daardie brug stapnie. Wees versigtig as jy by daardiekruising stilhou.

Minute later is ek sonder my geld,

Het ek my ma se “vuur”-waarskuwing

verontagsaam?

loop? Ja. Moes ek, by nabetragting, eerder ’n ander roete gekies het? Jip.Is my gevoel van veiligheid onder my

In hierdie stadium sien ek almal as

verdagtes.Maar ek hoop hierdie ervaring sal my

– Brenden Ruiter

I read the article “Laat ge-stremdes se parkeerplekkeoop”, TB, 18 May, with greatinterest, and agree wholeheart-edly that the fraudulent use ofdisabled parking bays must bepunished and the drivers finedheavily.I am a healthy, able-bodied

59-year-old. My husband and Imoved to Durbanville about ayear ago, with my 87-year-oldmother who suffers fromsevere osteoporosis, and canonly walk if she wears a backbrace, uses her walking stickand uses a shop basket trolleyfor support. She does not need to go out

often, as we provide all herneeds, but every now and then,it’s just nice to see the worldoutside her room, and this isnever for long, as she tiresquickly. On recommendation of our

doctor, we applied for adisabled parking disc when westill lived on the AtlanticSeaboard, and were granted ittwice. Her last licence expiredin March of this year, and wehave stopped using it, for fearof getting a fine. A newapplication was made at theDurbanville Traffic Depart-ment. We complied with allrequested documents, but ourapplication was denied. Thereason given that old age isnot a disability, and, since thedoctor stated that she can getin and out of the car unaided, was reason enough not togrant this disc.I was shocked and disap-

pointed. My mother gave updriving her own car some fiveyears ago, due to failingeyesight and troubles with herback: she battles to reversepark and very sensibly feelsthat she should no longerdrive. Thanks to the TrafficDepartment, she will now seeeven less of our new andbeautiful surroundings. We areall so very happy on this sideof “the boerewors-gordyn” butthis left us all bitterly disap-

person will ever “find anexcuse for murderers”, a verydangerous lie used by lovers ofdeath penalty to confuseordinary people. Of courseeverybody sympathises withvictims when they fall prey toderanged people. It is a blatantlie and generalisation tomention that “They (opponentsof death penalty) never mentionthe anguish of a parent whosechild was murdered whileplaying in a neighbourhoodpark”.Fourthly, ours can never be

hannesburg,” vertel hy.

Daar is tans slegs 29 330 pleegouers

Pleegsorg behels dat ’n kind by gekeurde

Metmeer as veertig jaar indie plaaslike musiekbe-dryf is Dennis East son-

der twyfel een van Suid-Afrikase lewende legendes.Die Dammit I Love You-ster is

Junie vanaf 15:00 in GrandWestse Grand-arena plaas.

grootste treffers soos“Take my Heart” en“Cry to me” asook “AMillion Drums” te sing.“Almal vanhulle sal ’n

Toe hy in 2006 saammet Steve

loop.

A learner from Fairbairn College is one sixSouth African high school learners selectedto participate in the 57th InternationalMathematical Olympiad (IMO) to be held inHong Kong from 6 to 16 July. Last year thisprestigious Olympiad took place in ChiangMai, Thailand. Mohammed Yaseen Mowzer(Grade 12) is part of the same team that par-ticipated last year as grade elevens, a firstfor South Africa.

Principal Bernard Marchand, says Mow-zer makes them proud.

“This bright young man has been makingFairbairn proud for the past four years and

has done it again. Yaseen is an outstandingambassador for the college. We wish him allthe best for the upcoming competition,”says Marchand.

Mowzer echoes Marchand. “I am excitedto participate in the IMO. I am proud to rep-resent South Africa and I hope that I willmeet interesting people from different cul-tures who share my interest in mathemat-ics,” says Mowzer.

The competition dates back as far as 1959when Romania hosted the first ever IMO.

Today there are over 100 countries fromfive different continents that will be partici-pating. In this Olympiad questions testingadvanced thinking skills are chosen frommathematical topics including geometry, combinatorics, number theory and alge-bra. The IMO brings young minds together– not only for competition purposes but al-so for instilling a spirit of friendship.

The team has been selected based on theresults of last year’s South African Mathe-matics Olympiad (SAMO), followed by anintensive training programme. In 2015South Africa was ranked in the 55th posi-tion having moved up by nine positions.Cape Town has the most representativeswith four.

Johann Engelbrecht, executive directorof the South African Mathematics Founda-tion, encourages the mathematical interac-tion of pupils from across the globe.

“Competing with young minds from allover the world is a wonderful experienceand we wish the South African team thebest of luck,” says Engelbrecht.

As the popularity of socialmedia sites and chatgroups continues to grow,

experts have warned parents tobeawareof a growing trend incy-berbullying.

Speaking to parents during arecent public meeting in TableView, Evan Booyens of Da VinciForensics explains cyberbully-ing is when someone uses the in-ternet, cellphones and othertechnological devices to send orpost text or images intended tohurt, embarrass, threaten, tor-ment, humiliate or intimidatetheir victim.

He says while cyberbullying isrampant in countries likeAmeri-ca, leading to various emotionalproblems in teens and in somecases suicide, South Africanteens were slowly starting to feelthe impact. Similar to the oldfashioned formof bullying,Booy-ens explains various tactics suchas gossip, threats and trickery

are used among children. In the online space, he says,

new tactics are used and mostdisturbing is the creation of fakesocial media profiles. Here thebully creates a Facebook page orany other form of social mediaaccount and poses as their vic-tim, placing embarrassing orfalse posts.

In South Africa the most com-monly used social media site isFacebook and Booyens says inmost cases girls are the perpetra-tors. “There are various reasonschildren do this. They include re-venge, power, entertainment, stupidity or problems at home.”

Booyens says the effects on thevictim range from sadness andanxiety to depression, anger andin some cases, suicide.

According to internationalstudies, 92.6% of teens say cruelbehaviour takes place on Face-book. Booyens says those samestudies indicate that 65.8% ofteens responded to their bulliesof which 35% where personalconfrontations.

“The stats show that 15.4% ofchildren avoided school and4.5% of them have been in a phys-ical fight with their bully. Ofthose teens only 10% of parentswere aware of what their teenwas going through.”

Booyens sayswhile SouthAfri-can teens were not as hard hit bycyberbullying, it’s important forparents to be aware of the poten-tial dangers.

“It won’t take that long for ourchildren to be hit hard by thisand it’s alreadyhappening on Fa-cebook. There are some simpleways to help prevent it.”

First on the list is for parentsto have their children’s socialmedia passwords. He says whileteens will complain about theirprivacy being violated, it is im-portant for parents to have ac-cess to monitor their interac-tions. He says parents should en-courage their children to speakup if they are being bullied andshould be taught how to blocktheir bullies from their socialmedia accounts.

Cyberbullying growingBellville director Uga Carlini willbe in the spotlight next week withhernew filmAlison theMovieat theEncounters International FilmFestival.

Based on the book I have life: Ali-son’s Journey as toldto Marianne Thamm, the film tells the true-life story of AlisonBothawhowas raped, stabbed and disem-bowelled, but sur-vived to rebuild herlife. The movie isUga’s debut hybridfeature film/docu-mentary telling Ali-son’s story using amixture of fairy taleidiom and unflinch-ing frankness and putting real-lifeheroes from that night alongsideactors like another Bellville local,Christia Visser who plays a youngAlison, ZakHendrikz, DeKlerkOe-lofse and Francois Maree.

Uga, from Towerkop Creations, specialises in heroine stories, sothere could be no higher honourfor her than to make her debut fea-ture film about one of South Afri-ca’s most loved heroines.

This is the first time Alison hasallowed cameras into her home, and Uga not only tells the story ofher brutal experience, but alsoshows the audience what she hasdone and become since.

Alison has alreadybeen dubbed “a storyof monsters, miraclesand hope”. While themovie will enjoy it’scinema release in Au-gust, it will bescreened for the firsttime at the EncountersInternational Docu-mentary Film Festivalat the V&A Water-front’s Cinema No-veau and The LabiaTheatre from Thurs-

“Dis so ’n mooi, vol taal, amper soos ’n sappigevrug.”

dis net weens Raé se krullerige ha-re,” spot Demi.

nie.Dus sal Demi en Raé Blaai Om

met Vriende op Vrydag 3 Junie enSaterdag 4 Junie by die Café by El-kanah House aanbied.Raé beskryf die groep se musiek

as ontvanklik.

With the advent of the newMunicipalPlanning Tribunal (MPT), the de-velopmental landscape of Cape

Town will be changing fast and furious. The MPT, consisting of a panel of town

planners only, will give effect to new legisla-tion to bring town planning into alignmentwith the transformation that has takenplace in other facets of local government. The determination of all land use applica-

tions and future developments will thus betaken out of the hands of localward council-lors, who traditionally “represented” theinterests of constituents at council level.Executive mayor Patricia de Lille said

that the new process was designed to pro-vide fairness and equality and to readdressprevious wrongs brought about by Apart-heid planning.“Therefore itwill bring about amore inte-

grated, high density city, where all peoplewill be living closer to their places ofwork,”she said.“One of the objectives is to reduce travel

times and congestion on Cape Town roads.”De Lille was speaking at the recent con-

ference of the of the Western Cape Develop-ment Forum (WCDF) held in Century City.MPTs were made mandatory in all prov-

inces by the Spatial Planning and Land UseManagement Act (SPLUMA) in 2013.In Cape Town, sittings of the MPT com-

menced inOctober last year, whence 180 ap-plications have been determined. Of theseless than 2% were refused.David Daniels, chairperson of Cape

Town’s first MPT, explained the concept ofmunicipal planning tribunals.“It is not a new concept being introduced

in the Development Facilitation Act (DFA)inGauteng in 1995, but found to beunconsti-tutional,” he said. “The idea was again pur-sued in the 2001 White Paper on SpatialPlanning with the core notion that decisionmaking on town planning matters are tech-nical in nature and should therefore bedone by practitioners with the relevanttechnical proficiency.”Even though new local government legis-

lationwas introduced to governmunicipali-

ties, local governments proceeded to devel-op their own Spatial Development Frame-works with limited policy or politicalguidance. Landuse decisionswere thus stillbeing decided in terms of the old order Landuse Planning Ordinance (LUPO).The new order legislationwas introduced

in the Western Cape in 2014 by the WesternCape Land Use Planning Act (LUPA),whereafter the MPT was established at theend of 2015.The above legislation flowed from the na-

tional Spatial Planning and Land Use Man-agement Act (SPLUMA) of 2013.In Cape Town, 21 town planners were ap-

pointed to the tribunal, whose decisionswill be guided by SPLUMA principles suchas spatial justice and sustainability. It willalso have to comply with environmentallegislation.Daniels stressed the fact that the impact

of future developments on property valueswill not be the sole factor to be taken intoaccountwithdecisionmaking. “Several fac-tors such as social and economic impact, impact on heritage, capital investment andtraffic impacts are to be taken into accountaswell as hownegative impacts can bemiti-gated. It is hard to sayhowmuchweightwillbe given to property values alone. Each casewill be determined on its own merit,” hesaid.Council also adopted a set of rules of pro-

cedure for meetings of the MPT, which in-cludes guidelines for oral hearings.Residents objecting against new develop-

ments can apply to address theMPT at suchoral hearings. Tribunal meetings will takeplace once a month in each region of theCity, whereward councillors and the publiccan attend and participate in oral hearings.Ward councillorMarian Nieuwoudt, who

attended the MPTmeetings, told TygerBur-ger residents of Cape Townwill have to edu-cate themselves with the functions and pro-cedures of the MPT in order to have theirvoices heard in future developments intheir areas. “If not, they will be excludedfrom decisions that may affect their imme-diate area,” she said. “It demonstrates acommitment to good governance and tomaking sounddecisionsbasedonahigh lev-el of technical proficiency.”

CT will changefast and furious

SAREL BURGER

Eight years into the Spur High SchoolsMountain Bike League organisers areanticipating that more than 500 South-

ern African schools will be represented inthe 2016 season, which will run from May toOctober.

According to league co-ordinator MeurantBotha of Amarider, participation at localevents is growing at a steady pace as schoolsaccept mountain biking as a recognisedsport – some going as far as building dedicat-ed tracks on school grounds to encourageafter school practice and interschool sportsdays as well as employing coaches and man-agers to oversee teams.

“The word on the street is that the topteams are in full training mode in prepara-tion for the 2016 season as competition be-comes more intense year on year. To manyriders, it’s not just about hopping onto thebike anymore, but rather honing skills, up-ping the fitness levels and working on themental toughness that is required to followdreams of becoming pro riders,” says Botha.

Although there are many kids findingtheir competitive edge on their bicycles, theSpur Schools Mountain Bike League’s focusis still to encourage “more kids on bikes, more schools in action”. It is important forall children to enjoy participating, whetheronly starting out or having participated fora few seasons.

This year has seen the introduction ofTeam Spur, James Reid and Ariane Klein-hans, who play the important role of encour-aging league riders to follow their dreamsand showing the reality of becoming spon-sored athletes. Between competing at theirvarious competitions, they have been min-gling with keen riders, sharing valuable tipsfrom how to better skills to handling pres-sureand formavital part of theSpurSchoolsMTB League as they set the tone as role mod-els for the young riders.

For those new to the Spur Schools Moun-tain Bike League, the league is a programmefocused on growing the number of childrenon mountain bikes by running interschool

mountain biking races around the country. The League consists of 11 South African

regions including neighbouring Africancountries Zimbabwe, Namibia and Lesotho.Around 60 events take place from May to theseason-ending national final in Magalies-burg in October.

The racing format takes place ona markedtrack, generally over school fields and dedi-cated trails, where riders have to completea certain amount of laps of a course that ran-ges between 2km-6km. The distance thatneeds to be covered is in accordance to theSouth African Schools Cycling Associationrules and regulations.

Each region hosts four events with the ex-ception of the Eastern Cape and Mpumalan-ga who each host three events in their re-spective regions along with a final.V For more information on the 2016 edition of theSpur Schools Mountain Bike League, visitwww.spurmtbleague.co.za, or contact Amarider’sMichelle du Preez at 021 8844547 or [email protected]

RUGBY: VARSITY SHIELD AWARD

AVRIL FILLIES

To receive the award as the BacklinePlayer that Rocks of the VarsityShieldwas a bittersweetmoment be-

cause “we just lost to Wits” in the promo-tion-relegation play-off.This is what AidynnCupido (19) of Stel-

lenridge, Bellville, flyhalf of theUniversi-ty of the Western Cape (UWC), said at theend of the Varsity Shield competition for2016. He played as a centre and full-backin all the age groups of Western Province

while a learner at Paul Roos Gym-nasium in Stellenbosch.

“I never saw my dad, Wil-fred, play centre for WesternProvince and Western Prov-ince League. Tome he was just

my dad and the coach of the rug-by club Helderberg and all the dif-

ferent Sevens teams in the province. But when I startedmy rugby career, that fact added extra pressure andI told myself that I would be in all

representative teams on merit and notbecause of my dad. “I asked my mom,Levona, about my dad’s playing daysand she pulled out a scrapbook of

newspaper clippings andactionpicturesthat she kept when he was playing. Onlythen I realised why everyone was putting

pressure on me to perform,” he said. His parents attended all his matches

and his dad said it was not necessary forhim to be a centre, he should play in theposition where he was comfortable andwhere he could add value to the team. That was when he switched to fly-half.“As a fly-half you are the general that

controls people around you and you givedirection to the team. As a centre you fol-low directions and carry a lot more ball. The assumption is that anyone can playfly-half because you just receive the ballfrom the scrum-half to kick for territory, but this is way off the mark,” he said.Cupido studies law at UWC and hopes

to sign a contract with one of the provin-ces. “For the next two years UWC will beplaying again in the Varsity Shield andwehave enough time to progress from theShield to take the Varsity Cup. The rea-son I say this is thatwe played against thebest university sides and we discoveredthat we were just not on par with them. With the experience that we gained thisyear we can just build on that in the nexttwo years, and then we’ll be a force to bereckoned with.“Currently I am focussing on my stud-

ies because you never know how longyour rugby career would last. When mystudies are done and dusted I would like

to open a sports agency to assist youngtalented players because not all sportagents are truthful to you. With my legalbackground I would be able to help theplayers,” said Aidynn. He is coached by former Springboks

Chester Williams and Bolla Conradie atUWC. According to him Bolla is an inspi-rational coach.“He allows us to express ourselves on

the pitch and gives us freedom withinrange, but wemust always keep the gameplan inmind. Chester is a statistician andbelieves the ball should do the job. Be-tween the two of them we as a team canachieve much more and with experiencewe can win trophies.“When I amnot playing rugby or study-

ing I read novels and watch television se-ries with the family, like NCIS, Blindspotand Gordon Ramsay. My dad and I talka lot about rugby but mymom is more in-to my academic career. I have two sib-lings, Ammin (14)who is at Paul Roos andAimee, who is at RhenishGirls High.“Mymessage to young players is that youmust have a goal and you are the only onewho can stop you from achieving thatgoal. Rugby is a confidence game andwith the support and encouragement ofyour family you are able to express your-self on the pitch,” said Aidynn.

Slegs by vier geleenthede in vanjaar se

reeks is minder as 23 doele in ’n wedstrydafgestaan.

Groot opwinding wag in netbal-halfeindstryd
