    ANDR BAKKES

    @andrebakkes

    T

    he Panorama, Welgelegen and Plat-

tekloof suburbs and its local neigh-

    bourhoodwatch (PWP), havenoticed

an increase in house burglaries recently,

as reported in TygerBurger. The watchs

    Hannes Rudman highlighted the current

trend of burglars who gain entry into

    homes through aluminium windows.

    Parow Community Policing Forum

    (CPF) chairperson, Roger Cannon, agrees

that break-ins are concerning in PWP,

which he describes as consisting of

    wealthier suburbs.

    Security measures

Cannon says people should join the

watch, Rudman says home owners should

increase their layers of security to

make it as difficult for the intruder to gain

    access, andBothasig police spokesperson,

    Warrant Officer Jacques Mostert, sug-

gests people should vary their daily rou-

    tine as much as possible.

    The latter continues: Home owners

should ensure they have burglar bars in-

stalled as a first line of defence and not

leave accessible windows open during the

night when it is warm. Also, ensure that

security gates are installed at the front

and back doors, and use it. Do not go out-

side and leave the security gates open

especially if you do not have the door in

your sight. Rather lock the gate and un-

    lock it when you enter.

Do not let strangers enter your resi-

dence to make telephone calls. Take their

details through the locked security gate

and make the call on their behalf. When

you see suspicious people or vehicles in

your area, please phone the police. Even

if it is a false alarm, the visibility of the

police vehiclemight scare off other poten-

    tial criminals. Install security lights

around your home and check for blind

spots. Good locks and good neighbours

who watch out for each other can be the

best deterrent against burglars. Then, se-

cure sliding doors so that it cannot be lift-

ed off their tracks. Store swimming pool

and garden equipment (long items such as

    cleaning poles) where perpetrators can-

not have access to it. Ensure that garage

doors are included on the house alarm or

locked with a deadbolt to prevent garage

    burglaries.

    Bigger picture

    Mosterts advice was specifically aimed

at residents of Bothasig, but it can be used

by residents all over Parow, Cape Town

    and South Africa.

Cannons call for people to see the big-

ger picture and join their local neigh-

bourhood watch is a necessity in PWP, as

    it is in every suburb.

If youwant a safer neighbourhood, the

police cannot do it alone. Stop complain-

ing and do something about it,he says.

Even that person who is way too ex-

treme formost people in his or her sugges-

tion in fighting crime is better than the

resident who sits behind security gates

and only caring about him or herself,

    adds Cannon.

    The police are under-resourced in

South Africa, but if everyone pulled to-

gether then we will make life very hard

    indeed for wrongdoers.

    Easymeasures can curb crime

    FROM PAGE 1

We believe it is important for the public to

have a convenient and clean place where

they can go to dispose of their garden refuse

and rubble. During peak months, such as

December, wehad to call inmore trucks and

trolleys to ensure thebins are emptyand the

site is clean. The cleanliness is especially

important at De Grendel, because there are

rats something that could get out of hand

if it is not maintained, he elaborates.

From more than 20 skips, the site now

    boasts less than eight.

We only have onemixed bin and one rub-

ble bin, says one of theworkers. There are

no green bins and no wood bins! Before this

company took over we had four green bins

and six rubble bins. The people who show

up get unbelievably upset when they dont

have a place to dump. We were told to tell

them that they should dump in the corner

    somewhere.

When TygerBurger was there this week

some of the corners were full of rubble

something unheard of in the preceding

    years.

Councillor Leonore van der Walt and the

City of Cape Town say they are investigat-

ing the matter and will take action where

    needed.

TheCity also asks users to be patientwith

the new contractor, with teething problems

bound to occur in the beginning.

    The only comment Waste-Marts Paul

Jafta was prepared to give at this stage was

that they were busy sorting it out and

more bins were on its way.

    ANDR BAKKES

    @andrebakkes

    T

here are so many areas in the Par-

    ow policing precinct, and each

presents its own unique set of

problems and challenges, said local Com-

    munity Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson

    Roger Cannon.

This statement has inspired the concep-

tion of a series of articles, which will touch

on one specific area a week. TygerBurger

will speak to the local neighbourhoodwatch

and hear from the people who know their

    suburb the best.

The eight areas of Parow, based on the ac-

    tive neighbourhood watches, are Parow

North Upper, Parow North Lower, Avon-

    wood/De Tijger, Fairfield, Parow Valley,

    Pacrif, ParowWest and Panorama,Welgele-

    gen and Plattekloof (PWP).

Obviously oneof thekey solutions to pre-

venting crime in each of these areas comes

down to the residents themselves, explains

    Cannon. By joining their neighbourhood

watch they are already taking a huge step

to living in a safer environment. The least

they can do is join aWhatsApp group estab-

lished in their street or suburb. This is a

    greatway ofmonitoring the flowof valuable

information, such as a suspicious person or

    vehicle spotted in their suburb.

According to Cannon one person will re-

port, for instance, a suspicious vehicle, and

then another will say they just saw it turn

down the street and later another will say

it has just left the suburb.

Some of these WhatsApp groups can be-

come litteredwith small talk, and to combat

this Cannon says there should be two

    groups one for normal communication

and one for emergencies only. One can as-

sign a different notification sound to each

group and then you will immediately know

when there is, as example, a robbery.

The time has come for every single per-

son concerned with crime to think bigger.

Together we can play a real part in making

a positive difference, he continues, before

    adding that oneWhatsApp grouphe belongs

to has already reached the maximum num-

    ber of members.

I dont know the exact number, but it

could be in its thousands, he concludes.

This week TygerBurger will focus on the

PWP area, where break-ins are a great con-

cern. From next week TygerBurger Parow

and TygerBurger De Grendel will each run

its own separate series of articles, with Par-

ow focusing on Pacrif andDeGrendel focus-

    ing on Bothasig.

The Greater Tygerberg Partnership held a business breakfast at the Nitida Wine Estate in

Durbanville on Thursday June 30 to launch their plans for Parow and Bellville. At the

breakfast were from left: Councillors Christo Kannenberg, Ronel Viljoen, Johannes van der

    Merwe and Clive Justus.

The GTP Directors present at the breakfast were: Chris OConnor, JP Bester, Sanett Uys

    and Justin Coetzee.

    Police investigate pamphlet

A pamphlet calling for homosexuals and

non-Muslims to be killed was recently

distributed at an unnamed Parow night

club that caters mainly for gay patrons.

The origin of the pamphlet is being

    rigorously investigated by Parow police,

and according to reports a private

investigator has also been called to action

by a Rylands businessman, whose name

appeared on the pamphlet. He has since

claimed this is not the first incident

where his name was listed on similar

flyers distributed by someone who is

unhappy about a property he is linked to.

The flyer calls for people to join our

latest crusade and sponsor a rocket to

kill non-Muslims and kill all lesbians

and gays all over the world.

Police are investigating a case of

    intimidation.

    T

he Lions Club De Grendel recently re-

flected on the last few years to update

readers on some of their proudest mo-

    ments.

The twinning and initiating of the Hear-

ing Aid project with the Exeter West Lions

Club UK (their contact being Lions member

Gerald Adams) resulted in over 20 000 hear-

ing aids received at no cost.

These aids were distributed to local hospi-

tals, clinics or other hearing disorder orga-

nisations free of charge. At a purchase cost

of R16 000 each, this project was worth in ex-

    cess of R40 000 000.

Another significant project was the clubs

twinning with various German Lion Clubs

who sent themsecond-hand school and sport

uniforms. They also assisted the club to re-

roof the Sanddrift Cheshire Home and to

    purchase a Nissan delivery vehicle.

The club also received three containers

with over 600 000 used spectacles that were

sent to the Lions Operation Bright Sight

head office. At R100 each this project is val-

    ued at R6 000 000.

Presently the club feeds over 250 people

per week and collects food almost daily.

The food is distributed in the De Grendel

    and surrounding areas. This project

thanks to the generosity of local food super-

markets enables club members to distrib-

ute food parcels worth over R100 each. This

food value is in excess of R1 300 000 per an-

num going to indigent fellow citizens.

Then, thanks to the generosity of Edel-

weiss Airlines, the club was able to collect

and distribute 2000 used passenger blankets

    during 2014, 2015 and 2016. The blankets

were extremely well received. At about R50

each, this donation was worth in excess of

    R400 000.

    Says club president, Patrick Pillay:

While above projects are worthy of men-

tion our personal belief is that the projects

whereby we entertain the physically and

mentally handicapped, our seniors and the

youth are extremely meaningful and re-

warding. These are done on a one-on-one ba-

sis . The smiles of contentment and happi-

ness on the beneficiaries faces make all our

    efforts worthwhile.

    DESIRE RORKE

    A

lthough the day to day cost of living in

Cape Town is a challenge for many lo-

cals, and leisure activities as an ex-

pense may not fit into the budget, it is still

possible for locals to enjoy their city, says

Gareth Bloor, Mayco member for tourism,

    events and economic development, follow-

ing the citys big win at this years Travel

    and Leisure Worlds Best Awards.

Cape Townwas namedwinner in the cate-

gory Top Cities in Africa and the Middle

East, during a ceremony held in New York

    on Wednesday 6 July.

There is a variety of free and low-cost

things to do and see that make it possible for

locals to get out and enjoy the city. There are

parks and beaches, with hikes on the moun-

tain and in nature. In fact, one of Cape Town

Tourisms most popular pages on their blog

is called 50 things to do for under R50 in

Cape Town, he said in an interview with

TygerBurger. Bloor says this award is good

news not only for the tourism sector, but

to the local economy as a whole.

Besides airlines, hotels and other forms

of accommodation, the tourist rand is spent

on restaurants, transport, retail and other

activities not necessarily considered to be

tourism activities. The entire supply chain

is impacted by increased tourism, support-

ing local food producers, farmers and local

    manufacturers, employment opportunities

and providing job sustainability, he says.

When asked about inflated tourism prices

most locals cant afford, Bloor says many of

these attractions have bucket list status.

The big attractions are the reason many

    international visitors travel across the

world for this bucket list experience, so

while they may come with a price tag, we

should see that they are worth saving up for

on our own bucket lists as locals, he says.

He adds that many of the local attractions

have specials aimed at locals, such as the

free Table Mountain Cableway trip on your

birthday on presentation of a South African

identity document, or open days at some of

SanParks destinations where there are re-

duced fees or no fees at all.

Bloor says the tourism market offers

    many alternatives for locals.

Hike up to the top of Table Mountain

along one of the many hiking trails which

are so popular among international visitors,

or take a budget boat trip in the harbour,

he says. Bloorwarns that local tourismbusi-

nesses should guard against pricing them-

selves out of themarket in favour of interna-

    tional visitors, andaddsCapeTownTourism

is determined to showcase the entire city

    including the northern suburbs, Atlantic

    seaboard and Blaauwberg coast.

A past pupil of the Hugo Lambrechts Cen-

tre, violinist Jeffrey Armstrong (19), will be

one of themain attractions at the upcoming

SA National Youth Festival concert, which

will be held at the centres

    auditorium on Saturday

    (16 July) at 19:00.

He will play a solo with

    the National Youth Or-

    chestra.

    Hundreds of young mu-

    sicians audition for a cov-

    eted place in the National

    Youth Orchestra, and a se-

lect few are chosen to form

    the green and gold nation-

    al team each year.

    The orchestras pro-

    gramme includesMahlers

    glorious Fifth Symphony

    and Benjamin Brittens

    seldom-heard Double Con-

    certo for Violin and Viola,

written when the composer was just eigh-

teen. The orchestrawill be conducted by the

sensational Ewa Strusiska, a finalist and

laureate at the prestigious Gustav Mahler

    International Conducting

    Competition in Poland.

    The performance at the

    auditorium will be pre-

    sented in association with

    Fine Music Radio, as part

of their drive to sponsor 67

    radios for beneficiaries of

    the Cape Town Society for

    the Blind. Proceeds will go

    towards the National

    Youth Orchestras bursa-

    ry fund, and radios spon-

    sored by FineMusic Radio

will be handed over on the

ket-kompetisie se wengeld aan die Tyger-

    berg-dienssentrum vir bejaardes en mobiele

    etes geskenk.

Die skool se ouers het hulself oortref ty-

dens die nasionale 67 Blanket-kompetisie en

is as een van die vyf voorste presterende sko-

le gedentifiseer as dit kom by die hekel van

    komberse.

    is.

    s De Necker.

Die kinders hou gereeld vertonings vir

die seniors en ons glo die sentrum doen fan-

tastiese werk met die ou mense. Hoe meer

mense in die omgewing weet van die sen-

    trum, hoe beter.

Die sentrum se bestuurder, Linda Louw,

gaan voort: Hierdie is n pragtige skooltjie

met sy onderwysers, wat gereeld in ons orga-

nisasie bel. Ons is baie dankbaar vir hierdie

    welkome skenking van die skooltjie.

    ameez Majiet from Thorn-

ton is living proof that hard

work pays off. At the age of

28, this City of Cape Town em-

ployee has become one of the

    youngest individuals to have

    completed her Masters degree

    in business administration

    Lameez spent most of her

    childhood years in Portlands,

    Mitchells Plain and Heideveld.

Growing up in a family where

her mom and dad were blue-col-

lar workers meant they all had

to work really hard for every-

thing that was needed. She knew

from an early age that she and

her siblings would have to make

the most of public schooling. At

the time, the thought of attend-

    ing a university seemed nothing

    more than a distant dream.

Aside from the high cost to at-

    tend university, the Majiet sib-

lings had to work to help supple-

    ment the family income.

She has been with the City of

Cape Town for just over four

years and is quick to point out

that this degree does not signal

the end of her academic journey.

    Lameez has every intention of

    pursuing a Doctorate of Philoso-

phy (PhD) degree in business ad-

ministration in the not too dis-

    tant future.

    Currently working in the information

    services and technology department,

Lameez would like to pursue a career as

a SAP software analyst within the City

    of Cape Town.

Lameez is wise beyond her years and

has some words of wisdom for her peers:

My advice to young people is that they

need to go out and look for opportunities,

    especially educational opportunities.

Each one of us needs to take responsibili-

ty and do something positive with our

lives. Being able tomake a success of our

lives is the best gift we can give our par-

ents and grandparents who fought for us

to be free and to get a quality education.

    Most importantly, surround yourself

    with peoplewhoare positive andprovide

the support needed to accomplish your

    goals, says Lameez.

    Citys Mayco member for corporate

    services and compliance, Xanthea Lim-

    berg, congratulated Lameez on her

achievement at such a young age. Her

focus andwill to succeed should be an in-

spiration to her peers. Quite oftenwe see

young people succumbing to peer pres-

sure for the wrong reasons and in some

cases straying away towards social ills.

My challenge to them is to follow Lam-

    eezs example. The opportunities are

plenty you just need to find them and

pursue what is of interest to you.

Lameez is among a group of 161 gradu-

ates who were recently awarded certifi-

cates of recognition for different levels of

    qualification.

lates Lameez Majiet on obtaining her degree.

rom the township all the way to Cannes, a

group of local filmmakers are behind the

film thats being hailed as the first zombie

movie made in Africa for Africa.

Last Ones Out, which premiered at the Durban

Film Festival last month, has already represent-

ed South Africa at the Cannes Film Market last

    year.

Shot in Dunoon and Tygerberg Hospital

amongst other Cape Town locations, the film is

the brainchild of producers Howard Fyvie from

Woodstock and Greg Kriek from Parow.

The duo managed to pull off the seemingly im-

possible by creating a full-length top quality fea-

ture film on the limited budget of only R50 000

a far cry from theR3,5mused on average to create

    a South African film.

We realised our biggest challenge wasnt nec-

essarily a lack ofmoney ... it was having the right

attitude, says Greg, who stars in themovie him-

    self.

Anything is possible were hoping that peo-

ple will not only be entertained by the movie but

will also be inspired, says writer and director

    Howard Fyvie.

The movie tells the story of Henry, a cynical

American contractor whowakes up in a deserted

hospital in the midst of a devastating zombie

apocalypse in southern Africa. After learning

that the region is in the grip of an otherworldly

outbreak, he is forced to join forces with three

    locals in order to survive.

While Greg, who plays Henry, is gaining popu-

larity on local screens with roles in Momentum

and n Man soos my Pa, the art-house drama also

stars Bellvilles Christia Visser, known for her

roles in Hollywood in My Huis and Ballade vir n

Enkeling, and veteran performer Tshamano Se-

    be, also from Woodstock.

    event opened this week.

With love and compassion we invite you

to join us for a weekend of sharing, support,

understanding and love in working through

our grief. Our theme is Hope. By allowing

    ourselves to grieve,weallowothers to grieve

and understand the grieving process, says

    coordinator Suzette Venter.

Grieving gets us through this very natu-

ral process in our individualways. With this

weekend spending time with other grievers

we create hope and understanding that, by

allowing our grief, we can heal.

Venter says they have compiled a week-

end of sharing with one another and provid-

ing a platform for members to share their

hurt and opening up in a safe environment.

There will be time to listen to each other,

be creative together, listen to various speak-

ers and enjoy light entertainment. Then, for

me the most important is that we will have

an opportunity to honour our children on

Sunday. We will light candles and do a bal-

an opportunity to speak about their child or

    Never give the

    complex

    witch reason

With more and more people living

physically closer to one another in this

    security complex booming market in

Cape Town, the poor witches have

    nowhere to turn to.

They used to be able to cook children

in peace and croon to their hearts

    content without disturbing the neigh-

bours, but now they live within spitting

    distance.

Most of us who reside in a flat or in a

    security complex know the resident

witch, who is almost inevitably a lonely,

    middle-aged woman trying her darndest

to make everyone feel just as miserable

    as she clearly is.

At night she sleeps with the rule book

under her pillow and wields it around

like a wand during the day.

Sometimes she can be heard cackling

clauses of this book while stirring her

    cauldron at night.

    Reconciling these witches and their

    neighbours might

    very well be an

    impossible task,

    but the least I can

    do is try.

    Extensive experi-

    ence in this field

    obliges me to tell

    all you good

    neighbours that its

    best not to feed the

    witch.

    Dont give her

    any reason to go on

    the attack. This

    includes having a

    petition signed by

all the other neighbours to force her to

    be more civilised.

She will only grow more evil by the

day, and one should never underestimate

    black magic.

Dont give her reason to hurl quoted

paragraphs of the rule book at you. This

means you will have to know it at least

half as well as she does. Try to live

within these rules, which are definitely

just. Remember, the witch didnt write

this book. She just enforces it in an

    unrelenting way.

Perhaps the best advice I can give is to

flatly ignore her. She craves attention, so

    dont give her any.

Some of these witches like cooking

children, so keep yours away from her

    front door at all times.

Witches hate the carefree laughter of

children and refuse to acknowledge that

they too cried loudly every now and

    again when they were young.

Finally, to the witches of the northern

suburbs please, for the love of all

things good in this world, give it a rest.

About 99% of neighbours dont bend

rules because they are spiteful. They are

just human just like you were before

    you bought that pointy, holier-than-thou,

    witchs hat. Andr Bakkes

    I refer to Peter Smuliks

    letter Ignorance over nuclear

    tech, TB, 22 June.

    Admittedly, the major

    problem with nuclear reac-

tors is what to do with them

    when they are shut down.

    Any items through which

    coolants have flowed for a

    few decades will end up

    heavily contaminated with

    various radio nuclides, a lot

of them with very long half

    lives tens of thousands of

years in some cases. So they

    dont decay very quickly.

Like it or not, with all the

    reactor plants the world is

    going to have many reactor

    Fukushima cannot

    happen atKoeberg

    containment buildings around

    for hundreds of years, in

    many cases, before they can

    be finally dismantled and

    their containment structures

    broken up.

But a lot of the problems

    about long term storage of

    spent fuel elements is finding

    sites where the local inhabit-

    ants dont come out gasping

    Nimby! To a large extent

    nuclear power is so easily

    misunderstood where safety

    is concerned, and incidents

    like Chernobyl and Fukushi-

    ma have not made that

    situation any better.

    Plus, of course, the enthusi-

    asm for renewable energy

    generating sources, solar and

    wind in particular, but for

    which the free power source

    is largely intermittent ...

    There are people who

would like you to believe that

    what happened at Fukushima

    could happen at Koeberg.

    It cannot happen.

As far as I am aware, there

    are no earthquake subduction

    zones around the Atlantic

    seaboard. The only situation

for a real disaster would be

for a large asteroid to hit the

    Atlantic Ocean and produce a

    wave half a kilometre high,

    but that would destroy

everything in its path when it

    reached the shore.

    Also the reactor types are

    quite different. Those at

    Koeberg are high pressurised

    water reactors, with all the

    reactor plant installed in very

    strong reinforced concrete

    containment buildings. The

    Fukushima reactors are

    relatively low pressure

    boiling water type. But,

    really, locating those emer-

    gency diesel generators below

    ground demonstrated a most

    remarkable lax in design

    professionalism. Who by? I

    wont speculate! If those

    diesel generators had been

    installed well above ground

    level, we would never even

    have heard of Fukushima.

Ek het verlede week op pad

na my ma toe gesien hoe twee

    mans dromme op die sypaad-

krap. Toe ek terugry van my

ma af, is die ouens nie daar

    nie, maar die hele sypaadjie

en die eienaars se erf was vol

vullis. Hulle het dit net so

    gelos. My foonbattery was te

pap om iemand te bel. Toe

sien ek die twee by die winkel

en gaan vra hulle om asse-

    blief te gaan opruim, wat

    hulle toe gaan doen het.

    MOEDELOOS

    Goodwood

    At night she

    sleepswith

    the rule book

    under her

    pillow ...

    I refer to Peter Smuliks

    letter Ignorance over nuclear

    tech, TB, 22 June.

    Admittedly, the major

    problem with nuclear reac-

tors is what to do with them

    when they are shut down.

    Any items through which

    coolants have flowed for a

    few decades will end up

    heavily contaminated with

    various radio nuclides, a lot

of them with very long half

    lives tens of thousands of

years in some cases. So they

    dont decay very quickly.

Like it or not, with all the

    reactor plants the world is

    going to have many reactor

    Fukushima cannot

    happen atKoeberg

    containment buildings around

    for hundreds of years, in

    many cases, before they can

    be finally dismantled and

    their containment structures

    broken up.

But a lot of the problems

    about long term storage of

    spent fuel elements is finding

    sites where the local inhabit-

    ants dont come out gasping

    Nimby! To a large extent

    nuclear power is so easily

    misunderstood where safety

    is concerned, and incidents

    like Chernobyl and Fukushi-

    ma have not made that

    situation any better.

    Plus, of course, the enthusi-

    asm for renewable energy

    generating sources, solar and

    wind in particular, but for

    which the free power source

    is largely intermittent ...

    There are people who

would like you to believe that

    what happened at Fukushima

    could happen at Koeberg.

    It cannot happen.

As far as I am aware, there

    are no earthquake subduction

    zones around the Atlantic

    seaboard. The only situation

for a real disaster would be

for a large asteroid to hit the

    Atlantic Ocean and produce a

    wave half a kilometre high,

    but that would destroy

everything in its path when it

    reached the shore.

    Also the reactor types are

    quite different. Those at

    Koeberg are high pressurised

    water reactors, with all the

    reactor plant installed in very

    strong reinforced concrete

    containment buildings. The

    Fukushima reactors are

    relatively low pressure

    boiling water type. But,

    really, locating those emer-

    gency diesel generators below

    ground demonstrated a most

    remarkable lax in design

    professionalism. Who by? I

    wont speculate! If those

    diesel generators had been

    installed well above ground

    level, we would never even

    have heard of Fukushima.
