“The reality is that the lease has not beenfinalised and I have been instructed to calloff negotiations with the City because of allthe confusion since the newspaper article.Nobody called us for confirmation and weare very disappointed in the results. Theproblem is we have students from all acrossthe world who are in the master’s pro-gramme and staff that stay on the site whosaw this article and went into a panic. Thiscould not have come at a worse time.”White said with a lease of this nature theinstitute had very strict procedures whichhave to be followed and the announcementby the City has “left a bad taste in every-one’s mouth”.“This has caused a huge nightmare for usand we have not resumed talks with theCity. At this stage we have called off all ne-

gotiations around the lease,” he said onMonday. When presented with this informationand asked what the City planned to do now,Little said they would be going into a meet-ing with the institute on Tuesday 14 June.Until then she could not comment further.TVRA chairperson Mandy Da Matta saysshe is disappointed at the outcome. After singing the City’s praises a weekearlier, Da Matta expressed her “utter dis-may”. She explained when she heard Littlehad confirmed it in writing a week ago, shewas excited as the centre was needed andwelcomed by many. This week, however, she questioned how the municipality couldbe so careless.“I am so disappointed to hear this. It’s anabsolute disaster. They came out with this

information getting everyone excited, andnow look what happened. We were lookingforward to working with the City to makethis project a success; now I don’t know,”she says.Milnerton CPF chairperson Lianne Lip-pert also expressed her dismay, saying thiscentre was exactly what the communityneeded.“There are so many homeless people inMilnerton and Table View. The Milnertonprecinct has a big problem with homelesspeople and areas like Brooklyn and Rugbyexperience high volumes of people sleepingin front of shop doors. We really hoped thiswould bring about the changewe need. Thiscentre is desperately needed.”V What are your thoughts? Send your letter [email protected].

Asewage spill at Big Bay beach over theweekend sent tongues wagging andtempers flaring as residents lambast-

ed the City of Cape Town.News about the spill spread quickly on so-

cial media on Friday as surfers posted pic-tures of raw sewage running straight intothe sea in front of the lifesaving club. Herehuman faeces, tampons and other itemsflushed down toilets could be seen.

Tempers flared as residents indicated thiswas the second spill in six months. In Janu-ary, the City reported a blockage had causeda pipe burst which resulted in raw sewageflowing into the sea. At the time, the munici-pality indicated the water was contaminatedand swimming was prohibited.

WhenTygerBurgervisited the area on Sat-urday, Jetvac trucks could be seen pumpingsewage from manholes. The trucks were al-so spotted in Perlemoen Street.

far too oftenDanger tape and signs indicating the wa-

ter was contaminated had also been erectedwhile City workers could be seen nearby.

Resident Martin Essl commented on thepictures of human faeces on the pavingaround the lifesaving club on social media, saying Big Bay beach should now receive“brown flag status”.

Table View Ratepayers’ Association(TVRA) chairperson Mandy Da Matta, whowas on the scene, said these spills were hap-pening far too often and needed to be investi-gated.

“Residents have legitimate questions. Wewant to know who is responsible for firstlythe spills and secondly who takes responsi-bility for the impact on the beach and theenvironment? These spills are a majorhealth risk and a danger to the public.”

Questioned by TygerBurger, Mayco mem-ber for utility services Ernest Sonnenberg

says a polyvinyl chloride bend on the ris-ing sewerage main from the Big Bay sew-age pump station to the Melkbos Wastewa-ter Treatment Works burst on Thursday 9June. He explains the Big Bay pump sta-tion had to be switched off, with the pumpstation serviced with vacuum tankers un-til the rising main could be repaired.

“Spills occurred for short periods duringthe peaks on Friday and Saturday morningand additional tankers were brought on tosite to assist. Normal operation was re-stored by 17:30 on Saturday. The pump sta-tion is the responsibility of the City andblockages on the site are the responsibilityof the property owner or managing agent.”

Sonnenberg says the manhole at the SurfClub is the lowest point and the sewagestarted overflowing at this point when thesump reached a very high level.

“This area was also barricaded off, cleaned and sanitised on Friday and Satur-day after the spills.”

Asked about the spill in January, Son-nenberg says this occurred on private in-frastructure while the most recent spillwas attended to by the City.

“The City of Cape Town operates a mas-sive network of sewerage pipes and this, together with the sometimes random na-ture of faults, makes it impossible to pre-vent every overflow.”

Inappropriate items flushedHe further says blockages occur when

residents flush inappropriate items intothe system, including cooking fat and rags.

“The only way to reduce these inciden-ces is for residents to ensure that they donot allow these substances to enter the sys-tem. The previous burst occurred on pri-vate infrastructure. In these cases theproperty owner/managing agent is re-sponsible.”TygerBurger questioned why people

were allowed onto the beach area if the wa-ter was contaminated and according to

Mayco member for community services andspecial projects, Belinda Walker, the Cityerected temporary signage indicating thatthe water was unfit to swim in, and thesport, recreation and amenities departmenterected red barrier tape around the pavingsand area where the spill had occurred.

“Members of the public were urged not togo into the water and the local surf shopsand ratepayers association were requestedto advise their members not to enter the wa-ter.”

Da Matta says this is not true as the TVRAreceived no communication from the City.

During a visit to the beach, TygerBurgeraccessed the contaminated area from anoth-er walkway metres away from the blockedoff area. This walkway was not blocked offand several people accessed the beach fromhere – some not even aware of what was hap-pening down the beach.

Asked why pieces of faeces that washedup hand not been removed, Walker says: “Aclean-up operation took place on Saturdaywhen the water levels in the manholes werestabilised, allowing for waste to be flushedaway without further overflowing.”

In addition the area was sanitised.Walker also says temporary signage will

remain in place until sample results con-firm the water is safe to use.V What are your thoughts? Send a letter [email protected].

700g baby Hattingh going homeAfter 100 days in a neonatal unit at

Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital, ba-by Hattingh is finally in his par-

ents’ arms.Going into premature labour is hard-

ly the perfect ending to a summer holi-day in Cape Town. But, for a Namibiancouple whose premature baby boy wasborn at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital, afacility known for its success rate in car-ing for compromised, highly prematurebabies, it all turned out fine.“Our son, Hattingh, who was born se-

verely compromised at 24 weeks, spentthe first 100 days of his life in theNeona-tal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of thehospital. Each passing day brought itsown challenges, but as a family we tookit minute by minute,” recounts ChantalCoetzee, mother of baby Hattingh whois now four months old.Hattingh Coetzee was born on Mon-

day 18 January weighing just 700 gramsand was delivered and cared for by neo-natologist Dr Ricky Dippenaar and theNICU nursing team at the hospital.“Iwent into labour right after packing

to return home at the end of our holiday. Asthe delivery was so premature and Hattinghwould be a high-risk baby,my gynaecologistcalled several hospitals and doctors to finda facility that could safely deliver and carefor him.Dippenaar andhis teamat theNICUdid not hesitate to accept us and today I amimmensely grateful that Hattingh was ableto benefit from the expert care they providedand that everything turned out well,” Chan-tal adds.Dippenaar says he is delighted to say that

Hattingh has now passed all themost impor-tant milestones. However, he still has a wayto go and his progress will need to be closelymonitored over the next two years.“It is difficult to imagine how hard it is for

the parents ofmicro premature babies. Theyface an immense emotional roller coasterduring the firstweeks of their baby’s life. Ev-ery time a micro premature baby reaches a

survival milestone, the staff members aswell as the parents breathe a little easier. When you are this involved, it is difficult notto become emotionally invested in the livesof these families, but we also have to try tomaintain a sense of balance, otherwise it canbecome overwhelming and may interferewith our work,” says Dippenaar. In 2011, Dippenaar made international

headlines when he headed up the team whosaved “ziplock baby” Allegra Lategan, bornat just 22 weeks and four days. He says thattragically some micro premature babies arejust too vulnerable to survive, but in mostcases the team is able to return them homewith their doting parents.“Modern medicine is increasingly giving

babies born prematurely a chance at surviv-al. We see many of these premature, oftenhighly compromised, babies end up leadingnormal, healthy lives,” notes Dippenaar.

Adesperate plea to slow down speed-sters in Phoenix and Joe Slovo hasbeenheard and residents can look for-

ward to safer streets before the end of June. The plea came after a tragic accident

which involved two taxis. Three pedestri-ans died and according toER24 paramedics, they found one person impaled in a taxiwindscreen and two people lying on thesidewalk in Freedom Way.

At the time, Phoenix residents said whiletheyhadcompleted formsrequesting trafficcalming measures, they sit and watch howmore people die as traffic and taxi viola-tions go ahead seemingly unabated.

The Phoenix Ratepayers’ Association(PRA) chairperson Ursula Marshall saidthe problem with speeding has increased inrecent years prompting many complaintsand concerns from residents.

In recent weeks, councillor Joy

McCarthyhas revealed that theCityofCapeTown has approved several traffic calmingmeasures which are set to be completed bythe end of July.

“I pushed hard for the traffic calming aft-er the horrific accident and all kudos to Jo-han Massyn, our roads engineer, who as-sisted by addinghis support to the request.”

She says the current island in FreedomWay at the junction with Democracy Waywill be removed and will be replaced by araised intersection which will slow downtraffic in both directions.

“In addition there will be two ‘speed-bumps’ in Freedom Way,” McCarthy ex-plains.

The traffic calming measures will costthe City more than R200 000 and once com-plete, will make the area safer for all.

“I know it will make the space safer, asno vehicle should be able to speed with thisconfiguration. It could even dissuade thecontainer trucks that are now using Free-dom Way instead of Racecourse Road.”

The project forms part of Eskom’s plansto beef up local nuclear resources to supportthe country’s needs. At the beginning ofMay, 100 young recruits started the flagshipnuclear operator training programme at

Koeberg Power Station.Speaking at the official

launch, plant managerRiedewaan Bakardienexplained they launchedthis programme with theobjective of ensuringthat Koeberg has suffi-cient Flag operators forthe future.

He said nuclear and re-actor operators at Koe-berg are internationallyrecognised as the flag-bearers of nuclearpower.

“When one goes to anuclear power station, the first thing you look atis the nuclear operators. Are they competent, arethey qualified, are theirbehaviours good? Wehave a lot riding on thesuccess of the people whowe have brought in. Thisprogramme presents arobust pipeline and a model to replicate fornuclear power in South Africa. Their devel-opment is critical to Koeberg’s long termsuccess,” he said.

Bakardien explained the programme alsohighlighted transformation within Eskomand said he was pleased to note that 40% ofthe young recruits are women.

“Importantly, they come from all acrossSouth Africa. Koeberg is not just about theWestern Cape. This nuclear initiative is forthe whole country. The road ahead for thesestudents will not be as nice as today. A lotof hard work lies ahead. The training is in-tensive. It takes five years just to get throughthe programme.”

In the next two years, students will under-go 62 weeks of classroom and practical train-

ing. He said the Koeberg nuclear trainingprogramme was the only programme whichwas besides the American programme inter-nationally accredited by the InternationalNuclear Plant Operators Organisation.

Brown said the project provided a plat-form for developing a robust nuclear opera-tor pipeline for South Africa. The pro-gramme, spanning five years, aims to builda path to ensure that there are sufficient lo-cal nuclear resources to service the coun-try’s present and future nuclear needs.

After the five-year period, trainees willqualify as nuclear plant operators or will en-ter related career equivalents.

“What is inspiring is that approximately95% of students are 35 years and younger, and about 40% are black females from vari-

ous parts of the country,” said BrownChairman of the Eskom board, Dr Bald-

win Ngubane, says the country’s new nucle-ar build requires additional resources foroperations, and the nuclear operator train-ing programme is geared towards ensuringthat the South African youth who have aspi-rations to access a career path in nuclear, has a chance at “realising their dreams”.

According to a statement, the 100 youngqualified artisans will be exposed to world-class nuclear training in the Western Capefor a period of five years before qualifyingas Nuclear Plant Operators or related careerequivalent.

As the only nuclear power station in Afri-ca, the licensed reactor operators who oper-ate the Koeberg reactors are scarce.

Riedewaan Bakardien, plant manager ofKoeberg Nuclear Power Station, outlines thevarious aspects of the projects.

bars to gain access. In the most recent incident on Thursday

9 June, police say three men in a white VWPolo were spotted knocking on doors inSamuel Close in Duynefontein.Police spokesperson Constable Debbie

Alard says according to reports when resi-dents passed the vehicle themen pretendedto be busy with paper work.“They broke into a house in Samuel Close

using a crowbar and took various valuablesincludinga laptop and television. It appearsjust after 14:00 the men scouted the area byknocking on doors to see if residents werehome before attempting to break in,” shesays. This incident follows three other inci-

dents in the Melkbosstrand police precinctand took place shortly after police releaseda warning statement. In the statement, Alard says the first inci-

dent took place in Reiger Street on Tuesday24Mayat about 12:10whenofficers receiveda call about a break-in. On arrival theyfound the front door and safety gate wereforced open by means of a crowbar.“The safe was also forced open. The own-

er was contacted and it was confirmed thata flat screen TV, laptop and American cur-rency was stolen. Further information re-vealed that three unknown males werespotted carrying a TV and placing it in a sil-ver SUV with CEM number plates at the

back. At this stage no arrests have beenmade.”Four days later the caretaker of a house

your neighbours and to know what is hap-pening in your street and community. Joinin the fight against crime by joining yourlocal neighbourhood watch and streetwatch to assist in curbing crime.”Alard says the use of crowbars by crimi-

nals to gain access to homes is widespreadacross Cape Town and says reports refer-ring to a crowbar gang are actually explain-ing the modus operandi.“There is not just one crowbar gang. Us-

ing a crowbar is a modus operandi used bymany criminals to gain entry to a home orbusiness.”She has also made a request for informa-

tion that can lead to the recovery of thestolen goods and the arrest of the perpetra-tors.V Anyone with video footage of the incidents or in-formation is asked to call police 021 553 8200 orthe sector vehicle on 079 894 1640.

New school nears completionConstruction on the new R47 million

SinenjongoHigh School in Joe Slovo isnearing completion.

Last week, provincial education ministerDebbie Schäfer and provincial transportminister Donald Grant visited the construc-tion site where work began in February. The Sinenjongo project is due to be com-

pleted by December – in time for the startof the 2017 school year.

It has been a collaborative effort betweenthe Western Cape Education Department, the Department of Transport and PublicWorks and the Rabie Property Group.

Grant and Schäfer were joined on site bythe principal, Kuselwa Nopote, as well themanaging director for Rabie PropertyGroup, LeonCohen, and the group’s commu-nications manager, Maggie Rowley, for asite inspection. The new school will consist of 33 class-

rooms, eight specialist classrooms, four sci-ence laboratories, ablution and storage facil-ities, an administration block, a computerroom, school hall and media centre as wellas a dedicated sports field.

The new school will accommodate morethan 1200 learners who mainly reside in thesurrounding areas of Milnerton.

While construction has been underway, the learners of SinenjongoHigh School havebeen temporarily accommodated at a tempo-rary school site in Joe Slovo.

Under Nopote’s leadership and with theassistance of the Rabie Foundation, the

school’s NSC results have more than dou-bled from 43,9% in 2009 to 90,6%.“I am very excited about the new school,

and so are all our teachers and learners. Wecan’t wait to get into the new school build-ing. We are also looking forward to havinga school hall and sports field,” says Nopote.Thedevelopment of this school is regarded

as a wonderful example of how the private

sector can invest in educationRabie Property Group has become a val-

ued part of the Sinenjongo High School com-munity, having adopted the school as itsma-jor corporate social investment beneficiaryin 2007. Thegroup has continued to providesupport for the school, sponsoring addition-al teaching posts in maths and science, aswell as a number of programmes aimed at

increasing proficiencies in English, mathe-matics and science.

The Rabie Property Group also played asignificant role in identifying the newschool site.

“Education provides the key to escapepoverty and the future of our country de-pends on a commitment from both the pri-vate and public sectors to improve the stan-dard of education for the benefit of all. Weare fully committed to Sinenjongo and thesuccessful turnaround that has beenachieved there has only been possible dueto the reciprocal commitment of the Educa-tion Department, the principal, the teachersand the learners,” says Cohen. The department of transport and public

works’ project team has done exceptionallywell to deliver a state-of-the-art facilitywith-in budget and the required time, ready forthe start of the new school year.

This is just one of the projects that the twodepartments are collaborating on, with theWCED having budgeted R1,29 billion in2016/17 on building and refurbishing schoolinfrastructure across the province.

The R47 million Sinenjongo High Schoolproject has also seen the creation of Expand-ed Public Works Programme (EPWP) workopportunities through the project, includingthe vital skills training component. A totalof R6m is expected to go towards targetedcontractor businesses, R5m to suppliers andmanufacturers, and R5m to targeted local la-bour, with 111 local labourers employed.

Pictured during the site visit are, from left, provincial education minister Debbie Schäfer, principalKuselwa Nopote, provincial transport minister Donald Grant and managing director for RabieProperty Group, Leon Cohen.

What if you weren’t bound to lis-ten to hyper local news impacting on thesuburb you live in, but rather the northernsuburbs as a whole?

Would this then contradict what Tyger-Burger stands for?

Followers of the newspaper on Facebookwould have noticed a new feature – aweekly wrap-up video – posted every Tues-day.

In this short video some of the articlesthat appear in the newspaper are highlight-ed, giving you the biggest weekly newsfrom the northern suburbs in bite-sizedchunks.

Some broadcasters bring you globalnews, some focus on a particular city, butno-one targets a relatively small area suchas the northern suburbs.

This means, of course, that the newspa-per continues to set the bar of hyper localcontent across all mediums.

One of WP Media’s journalists, BrendenRuiter, asked himself how one can spreadthe news in a digital world, and make it aseasy as possible for Facebook users to stayup to date.

“The answer was simple,” he says.“Why not a weekly news bulletin? We

started a month or two ago and the popular-ity of the videos is for all to see. It’s still awork in progress, of course, with finer de-tails still being ironed out.”

A couple of minutes a week to stay up todate with news headlines? The viewer’sconvenience is clearly the catch phrase.

Another imminent adoption will be roll-ing text at the bottom, which will mean onecan watch the video with no sound if neces-sary.

In essence, it is a news broadcast with avery brief description of the chosen arti-cles.

If one snippet piques your interest, youcan read more about it on the newspaper’sfree website under the Netwerk24 domain. All you need to do is type tygerburger.co.zainto the URL bar of your browser.

The same concept has also been em-braced by the southern suburbs’ People’sPost, so in just six minutes you can get acommunity newspaper’s perspective ofhappenings in the whole of Cape Town.People’s Post journalist and bulletin pre-

senter Samantha Lee says the additionalchallenge has been an exciting venturethus far.

“It is no secret that news and the mediaare moving into a digital space.

“This venture helps us satisfy the newsneeds of those on the move and assists ourjournalists in telling the inspiring storiesof others that may not have made it into thereaders’ relevant editions.

“The response thus far is an indicationthat this truly is a step in the right directionfor WP Media.”V Find TygerBurger on Facebook and look out for“Die Week in...” on a Tuesday afternoon at 17:00.

Ranting overrising rentalratesAt the start of July my 22-month-old babyboy will be living in his third home –poor kid.It has gotten so bad that his first

coherent sentence might very well be“Pack it in a box”.Quite astonishingly, I have moved 23

times in 17 years. Suffice to say, I knowwhat I’m talking about when it comes torental prices. It has also struck me how little home

owners know about the price of renting adecent place in Cape Town. All they are concerned about is wheth-

er they will be paying a little more or alittle less next month due to the interestrate. As rental tenants we face an industry

standard annual price hike of 10%!Every year we are 10% poorer! Add

half a cup of Eskom and a spoonful ofinflation and you have a baked monstros-ity that chips teeth.

In just sevenyears from nowone can expect topay double onepays now!A shoestring

budget can only becut so much. Soonthere will be noshoestring left!Agents and

owners who rentout their propertieshave no problemgetting tenantsbecause of thegreat migration

from the rest of the country to CapeTown.Someone ought to tell Gautengers

perhaps they are better off in the north.I compared renting prices from Gaut-

eng and Cape Town this week. I fullyexpected to see a similarity in what youcan get for R10 000 a month. With that money I can rent a nice

townhouse with an impressive garden inone of the best security complexes inPretoria. In Cape Town I have seensmaller townhouses with smaller gardensin Kraaifontein go for R10 000.I love Cape Town, but something

drastically needs to happen to curbrenting prices, which are quite obviouslycompletely out of control. The only way to keep head above water

seems to buy property. The other day I went into a book store

and saw one in the self-help section aboutempowering a middle income householdto buy a house in South Africa.I paged through it in disbelief and

returned it to where it belongs – thefiction section. – Rent-a-lot

I wonder if Ilse Haas is not abit too harsh in her descriptionof the terrible Capetonians(“Cape Town and its ‘clicky’circles”, TB, 8 June). The truthis that in most cities peopleare busy and have their owncircles; it is not just a CapeTown thing. But I wonder how far her

own ideas actually make itworse? There are ways tomake friends. My daughter andfamily relocated to Australia afew years ago, landed in asmall town with no otherSouth Africans, and by beingactive and helpful at school, joining a local church, invitingpeople over for a braai andjust being friendly and outgo-ing, they have more friendsthan they can handle now.I myself arrived here in the

Cape 23 years ago and had tohear from the Pretoria crowdhow distant the Capetonianswere. Within a few months Ihad a few good friends and Istill wait to meet these horri-ble Capetonians (they arethere, but they should not beyour norm).

Eiland Wetlands and Diep Riverall fall under the responsibilityof the new Table Bay NatureReserve. Sadly they are over-challenged and understaffed tocope with this huge task inlooking after our wetlands.Currently they just manage to

keep their doorstep clean andget some nice rewards. But, alas, just have a look

under the carpet and you willsee what’s really going on.I live next door to these

wetlands and have noticed adecline in the ecosystem andthe services for the last 16years. Also vagrants, happycampers, black water faecalpollution and solid waste haveincreased dramatically. And they call this a nature

reserve?Residents around the vlei are

fed up with this situation. Thecrime rate has increased, as thereeds give good cover forgetaway burglars. We have aserious health hazard and weare plagued by swarms ofmosquitos and flies that breedin these stagnant waters. There is a constant flow of

faecal black water into the DiepRiver in Milnerton, and everytime it rains the sewer lines areoverflowing into the vlei. What is the waste water

department doing about this? There are some good solu-

tions to handle this, but nobodywants to take the responsibility.

Why not pump saltwater into the vlei?

It was recently reported that300 members of one party inthe Western Cape jumped shipto join the opposition. This tellsme one of two things:They all suddenly had an

epiphany about the bad policiesof the previous party or theywere promised something. This is nothing new and it is

perceived to work to the benefitof the party gaining the newmembers. It does not.It does, however, show how

shallow some people are whenit comes to election time asthey are serving themselvesand not their communities. There is one description for

actions like this and it’s calledpolitical whoring.

First of all the Vlei is longoverdue for a controlled burn. The water body has now totallyovergrown with reeds andthere is no flow. The stormwater outlet pipes

must be cleared on a regularbasis. They are blocked. Thestorm water coming fromCentury City canals andwetlands should be controlledand redirected into the vlei, instead of just flowing down aculvert into the sea. What a waste of water …If you look back in history,

these wetlands once formedpart of an island, and PaardenIsland was surrounded by freshand salt water. Why notreverse the process again andpump salt water into the vlei?It will slowly change theecosystem back to how it usedto be and kill most of the reedsthat are clogging up the water. What is the use of spending

huge amounts of time andmoney when you can workwith nature and it could healitself? With a bit of humaneffort we can make the differ-ence. After all – we are theones who caused the problem.

His face beams with pride as the foursingers surrounding him practice anumber for their upcoming Father’s

Day concert. The local theatre legend Alvon Collison is

seated in his Milnerton home where his wallsare lined with the faces of the all the enter-tainers he’s helped along his own music jour-ney – a career spanning five decades.

Affectionately known by many Capetoni-ans as “Mr Showbiz”, Alvon was recentlyhonoured with a Naledi Lifetime Achieve-ment Award for his contribution to the SouthAfrican entertainment industry.

“To win that award was wonderful; it wasabsolutely stunning for me, because Ithought I was a forgotten man.”

Alvon spent a large portion of his careerin Johannesburg where he won a GalloAward and Three Leaf Award (now calledFleur du Cap Theatre Awards) for his break-out role as the Pharoh in Joseph and theAmazing Technicolour Dreamcoat- a role heplayed in more than 3000 performances of theproduction.

The now 75-year-old returned to CapeTown at the age of 42. “Then I built a wholenew career here.” Alvon admits to workingveryhard, hiringhalls and settinguphis ownshows. “I had to believe in myself that thiswas all going to come together and slowly butsurely this became a way of life for me.”

His Cape Town chapter turned out to be asillustrious as Johannesburg with Alvon re-ceiving Civic Honours from the City of CapeTown. His regular shows, like his upcomingFather’s Day celebration and his annual freeSpirit of Christmas concert, which he’s host-ed at Cape Town City Hall for the last 15years, have become staples of the Cape Townentertainment calendar. Perhaps his biggestcontribution to the industry, though, is all

the talented performers he’s nurtured alongthe way.

Walking through his home, Faried Swartz, one of these performers, points to photos onAlvon’s walls, listing names and achieve-ments of all the stars Alvon has worked with.

In his Spirit of Christmas concert alone,he’s worked with about 50 children eachyear. “I’ve watched little people who playedJesus who are now playing Joseph.”

Then there are singers like Lana Englishwho stared in Phantom of the Opera. “Lana’smy girl,” he says, adding the names of per-formers now working in the United Kingdomand Spain.

“They’re all my kids who I’ve tried to help. They’re all an extension of me and the linkhas never been broken.”

Renee Osborne, who will be singing in hisFather’s Day show, adds a lot of people cometo Alvon’s door.

“And he just opens more doors for them,”says Osborne.

Working with young people is somethingthat runs in the family. Alvon’s grandmoth-er, a school teacher, was the well-respectedChristine Revell, after whom the ChristineRevell Children’s Home in Athlone is named.

“She was the one who inspired me to dowhat I’m doing,” Alvon exclaims. “She tookme to a concert at City Hall and I fell in lovewith the stage,” he recalls fondly. “I thought:‘I want to be here one day,’ and now I am.”

After half a century on stage, Alvon sayshe’s been truly blessed to be able to keep do-ing what he loves.

“I love my life,” he says proudly.V Alvon will be presenting his Father’s Day concertwith Renee Osborne, Shannon Lewis, Janine Pick, Far-ied Swartz and guest Sophia Foster at the Wood-bridge Primary School Hall in Milnerton on Sunday(19 June) from 15:00 to 18:00, where guests can ex-pect an afternoon of humorous anecdotes and music.Tickets for the show cost R100 and include tea, cof-fee, koeksisters and snacks. Western Province and Bowls SouthAfrica are going full tilt at gettingschools involved with their youth

development lawn bowls programme.“Let’s get the ball rolling” is a massive ef-

fort to revive the sport specifically target-ing our youth for the future in the sport ofbowls,” says Glenda Pontes from the Good-wood Bowling Club, who is also involvedwith the Western Province Bowls StandingCommittee Development and is the drivingforce behind the initiative.

Trevor Davis, executive member ofBowls SA, Anina Black, member of the na-tional standing committee membershipand marketing, and Leon Venter, convenerof the Western Province standing commit-tee development, are just some of the peoplethat have offered to assist and give advice.

“Goodwood Bowling Club, like so manyother bowling clubs in the country, hasseen a decline in membership, mostly dueto older members passing away. The clubhas been in existence since 1963 and has agood track record with many a district play-er, and is a strong role player in WesternProvince,” says Pontes.

“We have decided that we do not want tobe one of the clubs to close our doors andhave set out on a road to revive the club andgrow the number of members,” she boasts.

The Goodwood Bowling Club announced

that 22-year-old Protea player Anneke Sny-man has come on board to be the face of thecampaign.

Anneke, a Bredasdorp and Boland playerresiding in Cape Town, is a dual memberat the Goodwood Bowling Club. She is pas-sionate about bowls and keen to see bowlsbeing taken to the townships and more chil-dren playing the game.

In order for this venture to be a success, schools must buy into the idea and help in-troduce the game of bowls to their learners. That is where the next generation of cham-pions will come from, and that is the pointof this whole exercise.

It’s been said many times over that bowlsmust get rid of the dreadful tag of “old man’smarbles”. For this to happen the messagethat bowls is fun, exciting and the sport forall ages must get out.

Tomorrow (Thursday 16 June), the Good-wood Bowling Club and some of the WPbowling clubs, will host a fun filled dayfrom 09:00 to create some hype around thesport. “It is also inspiring to see AldermanClive Justus, MP James Vos, ward council-lor Cecile Janse van Rensburg and past dis-trict governor Maisie Fisher welcome themove,” says Pontes.V Anyone who would like to get involved and playon the Youth Day at Goodwood can contact GlendaPontes 082 371 2940 and for further informationvisit www.bowlssa.co.za or www.facebook.com/BowlsSouthAfrica

With racing in the reverse direction anda variety of other attractions, Saturday’sround of the Power Series at Killarney onthe eve of Father’s Day, promises to be oneof the best.

Sponsored by Wingfield Motors withfull media support from radio stationKFM, the meeting has the huge advantageof creating what is effectively a totally dif-ferent circuit, but with all the establishedspectator and organisational facilitiesstill in their original positions.

The only change to the actual layout ofthe track is the inclusion of a twisty, zig-zag chicane in the shadow of the new pitblock on the approach to the Cape TownCorner (Turn 5), along the start/finishstraight. Although tried once last year, itis otherwise a completely new feature.

Specific Father’s Day benefits are goingto include drives around the track at rac-ing speed in a new McLaren 650S V8 turbofor the lucky winners of a competition.

Then, in addition to all the racing carsand motorcycles, the father and son wan-derers will be fascinated by the magnifi-cent display of model planes in the new pitblock that has a floor area not much small-er than a rugby field. And of course, a se-lection of the exhibits will be flyingaround the track as well during the lunchbreak.

Fathers will also be entitled to a free cup

of coffee or hot chocolate in the clubhousein the morning, while their youngsters areracing around on the adjacent lawn intheir pedal go-karts.

That apart, the marrow of the meetingis going to include a full range of racing. In the Crossley and Webb Sports and GTcategory, the reappearance of Johan En-gelbrecht in his pacey Porsche GT2-Rcould cause problems for the trio of equal-ly quick Juno sports racers in the handsof Francis Carruthers, Steve Humble andColin Plit.

The battle between the spectacularDanie van Niekerk (BMW 325) and formerstock car ace Jesse Huggett (VW Jetta) willlight up the track during the Midas Club-man events, while there’ll certainly beloud cheers for Dave Rowley’s indecentlyquick VW Beetle in the Kent Homes FineCar category.

However, the largest entry has been re-ceived for the Mutlu Batteries Classic Carshootout where the Ford Fairlane V8s ofPeter Lindenberg and Mark Uitenbo-gaardt will be up against Malcolm Uiten-bogaardt in his Ford Granada Perana V8.

There will also be races for Makita For-mula Supercars and the Bold Marine GTiChallenge where the aggressive Nian duToit is going to be the driver to beat.

The two-wheelers will be represented byMike Hopkins Superbikes, Powersport,Clubmans, Classics and the CBR 150 Hon-da Cup racers.
