BIN SCRATCHERS: CRIMINALS HIDE IN THEIR MIDST

The simple act of putting your municipalbin out on the street the morning in-stead of the evening before was clear to

be seen in Edgemead last week.According to the chairperson of the

Edgemead Neighbourhood Watch (ENW),Mark Richards, their patrollers noticed a“huge decline” in the droves of bin scratch-ers they used to see from late afternoon onthe day before the refuse collection days.

Collection days are on a Tuesday and aWednesday.

Last week just five street people were no-ticed wandering around the neighbourhoodduring the night, where other weeks thisnumber fluctuated between 40 and 50.

“It makes a considerable difference tothose patrolling our streets when we don’thave people aimlessly roaming around,”says Richards.

Bin scratchers have been a thorn in theside of many neighbourhoods for years now.TygerBurger reported on what appears to

be a mass migration of vagrants from sub-urb to suburb – always in sync with refusecollection trucks. Their numbers inevita-bly started increasing the day before collec-tion because of people leaving their bins outovernight.

The plight of bin scratchers invoke empa-thy in all but a few.

“It’s a tough life,” Richards explains.“This empathy, in a way, is part of the

problem. People with bleeding hearts try tohelp the vagrants, which just invites moreinto the suburb.

“Sometimes they are asked to go to home-less shelters, but many prefer not to becausethere are too many rules.”

Richards says ENW patrollers often learnthe names of street people and would askthem very politely at night to leave the area.

“We are never rude and never violent,” heemphasises.

According to him Law Enforcement canonly be involved when someone is breakinga bylaw, so the unwritten rule is that neigh-bourhood watches urge vagrants to movealong.

The plight of bin scratchers dawns on one

after talking to them. One of these people,who is only willing to give his first name asTrevor, says he scours bins every day forold soft drink cans and newspapers.

He puts all these items in bags and deliverit to scrap yards and recycling plants.

“I get 60 cents a kilo for the cans and 50cents a kilo for newspapers,” he says.

With this money he would buy himself apeanut butter sandwich for R3. Trevor saysfor the rest of the day he eats whatever ediblefood he can find in the bins.

Richards says many of the bin scratcherschoose the life they lead, and Trevor agreesthat some do, but not him.

“Some like it; not me. If I could choose Iwould live in one of those houses,” he says,pointing towards modest looking flats on theside of the road.

While he tries to make a “living”, othersare trying to make it harder for him.

Trevor concludes: “We are not allthieves.”

This is the problem for Edgemead andcountless of other suburbs. Some vagrantsare unfortunately thieves, and they oftenhide under the banner of bin scratchers.

Says Richards: “One day I arrived at thescene of an attempted burglary. The perpe-trators were trying to lift a gate to gain entry

to a property. The domestic worker told meshe recognised them. Apparently they werehanging out with bin scratchers. We are notsaying they were bin scratchers, but thatthese guys unwittingly provide the perfectcover for them.”

ENW will continue to spread pamphletsinto the suburb to remind people to only puttheir bins out on collection days.

To all those who have heeded the watch’scontinued efforts to reduce the number of va-grants, Richards says: “On behalf of theENW I would like to say a big thank you tothose residents who are making the effort forthe greater good of our little village.”

ropes, was recently assigned to a theft casewhere a large amount of cash was stolenfrom a house in Bothasig. The house is usedby people from the West Coast when theyvisit Cape Town.According to police spokesperson War-

rant Officer JacquesMostert, the complain-ant told the police that there had previouslybeen two cases of theft where money wastaken.“The first time cashwas taken from a safe

and thereafter from the suitcase of a visitor.At the time the owner of the housewas over-seas and when she got back, the complain-ant had already left. A large amount of for-eign currency from another visitor wentmissing as well as money belonging to theowner of the house, who also laid a charge.Criminal cases of theft were opened and as-

signed to Constable Ruka,” says Mostert.Evidence led the constable to investigate

the domestic worker of the house.“When Constable Ruka interviewed the

worker, she acknowledged that she had tak-en the money in all three incidents. Rukafollowed the leads and recovered more thanhalf of the money, which the suspect ex-changed for South African currency. Thesuspect was detained and charged and hasalready appeared in court, but according tothe officer the investigation is still ongoing

as she wants to try and recover the rest ofthe money as well,” says Mostert.The complainants were so grateful for the

good work done by Ruka that they visitedher office and presented her with flowers.The acting commander of theBothasig de-

tectives, Warrant Officer Riaan Kemp, sayshe is very proud of Constable Ruka.“She is becoming a good detective. If she

van dwelms”, 1 Junie) berig oor dié huis opdie hoek van Gerrit- en Bosheuwelstraat,wat ’n bymekaarkomplek is vir dwelmver-slaafdes. So erg gaan dit daar dat gebruiktedwelmnaalde, daggapype en tiksakkies oopen bloot rondlê. ’n Buurman se minderjari-ge kind het al ’n spuitnaald opgetel.

Theresa Mulder, ’n inwoner van Botha-sig, sê nou sy probeer reeds sedert Desem-ber verlede jaar om die huis te koop.

“Ek het my huis verkoop en wil graag dié

huis koop. Die huis is vervalle, maar met ’nbietjie werk kan dit leefbaar gemaak word,”sê Mulder.

Vir die aanvanklike berig het TygerBur-germet Wilma Raats, die enigste oorlewen-de dogter van ene Luca Mathee, gepraat.

Mathee was glo die eienaar van die huisen het dit in sy boedel aan ’n seun bemaak.Hierdie seun is dood en daarna het die huisin ’n dwelmnes ontaard.

“My pa het in sy testament gesê ons aan-neembroer kan vir tien jaar ná my pa sesterfte in die huis aanbly. My broer het on-gelukkig kort daarna gesterf en sy meisiehet in daardie stadium in die huis agterge-bly. Toe sy ’n nuwe kêrel kry, het hulle alwat ’n mens is daar toegelaat. Muller sê sy het met Raats gepraat oor diehuis. “Ek het ’n aanbod gemaak om die huiste koop en dit lyk of sy belangstel, maar ditblyk of die huis nog nooit op haar pa senaam geregistreer was nie.

“Hoewel haar pa betaal het vir die huis,is die papierwerk nooit afgehandel nie. Sodie huis behoort eintlik nog aan die nasio-nale regering,” sê Muller.

Thami Mchunu, woordvoerder van diedepartement van openbare werke, sê by na-vraag hulle sal ondersoek instel oor wat dietoedrag van sake rondom die huis is.

Dwelmhuis se eienaar gesoek

Bothasig police had a major breakthroughwhen they swooped in on premises wherea dagga cultivation plant was being operat-ed.

Local police received information thatsuspicious behaviour had been noticed at aresidence in Richwood. The informationwas followedupwith the result that ahydro-ponics facility was discovered where daggawas being cultivated.

The officers followed up on more informa-tion received and arrested a 45-year-oldmale at an address in Bothasig, which is fre-quently raided by local police as a result ofdrug activities.

Dagga plants estimated to have a value ofR152 000 were found on the premises andseized as well as all the equipment used tocultivate the plants. A case of cultivation ordealing in dagga has been opened and is un-der investigation.V Contact the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.

Die wêreld is een enorme soetpatat ry-ker nadat die 8-jarige André Pietersvan die Laerskool Parow-Wes ’n

“monster” van 11,59 kg gekweek het.As ’n mens dit in lewende lywe bestudeer,

voel dit kompleet of die soetpatat jou terugbestudeer!

Dit is ongelukkig nie die moeder van allesoetpatatte nie, wat volgens Guinness 37 kgweeg.

André se patat sal aan die anderkant tenminste ’n “tannie van alle soetpatatte” weesas ’n mens dit vergelyk met ander nuus-waardige patatte.

Verskeie koerante in Engeland het juis in2008 ’n groot ophef gemaak van ’n Lebaneseman wat ’n 11,3 kg-soetpatat gekweek het.

“Ek plant dit en my pa grawe dit uit,” sêAndré trots.

Die reus is op die Pieters-plaas in Stan-ford gekweek, waar André sr. dit so ampersmet ’n voorgraaf uit die grond moes haal.

Volgens André jr. is die geheim om tweekeer ’n dag water oor die groente te gooi,asook ’n bietjie strooi.

Die Pieters het ook goeie kompos gebruikom die grond voor te berei om geboorte tegee aan dié reuse-patat.

Daar is op daardie dag ’n paar grotes uit-gehaal, wat moontlik kan beteken dat díeknol miskien deel was van ’n gewas wat re-kords sou slaan.

Omdat die soetpatat egter verwyder wasvan die res van die plant, is dit nou sinloos

om Guinness te kontak.Daar was juis geen terugvoering van

Guinness af teen druktyd nie – nadatTyger-Burger vir hulle ’n navraag per e-pos ge-stuur het.

Die storie van André se soetpatat sal nie-temin nog jare onthou word in die gesin.

“My pa was besig om brandpaaie op dieplaas te maak toe hy die soetpatat uitgehaalhet.

“Hy het dadelik gebel en gesê ons sal nieglo wat hy nou hier uitgehaal het nie! ‘Kykhierdie massiewe ding!’, het hy gesê,” lagAndré.

André sr. het dadelik na ’n winkelsen-trum in Gansbaai gegaan om die soetpatatte weeg.

Sy seun voeg by dat dit van dag een sydroom was om hierdie soetpatat se foto indie TygerBurger te plaas.

Noudat hy dit gedoen het, kan hy maarbegin eet daaraan. Miskien plaas Tyger-Burgerweer ’n berig oor ’n jaar om te sê An-dré het dit uiteindelik opgeëet.

Hy sluit af om te sê dat hy nie een keerRed Bull oor die yslike ding gegooi het nie.

Estelle Kempen, ’n agronomie-dosent bydie Universiteit Stellenbosch, sê die soortkultivar wat jy gebruik kan ontaard in ’ngroter wortel, maar die omstandighedemoet gunstig wees om iets so groot te groei.

Sy voeg ook by dat jy 30 van dieselfde kul-tivars kan plant en dan kan een ’n mutasieondergaan.

Dít is wat met André se soetpatat gebeurhet. Daar was ’n DNS-mutasie, wat gelei hettot ’n uiterse rare gewas.

they treat are alcohol and tik dependence.Every week on a Tuesday and Thursday

people from all walks of life are admittedand subjected to an intense and profession-ally managed rehabilitation programme,consisting of one week of detox and four

weeks of structured in-patient pro-grammes. Ultimately, all of the patients aredrug-free by the time they are discharged.“At Ramot, once patients are out of detox,

theydon’t just lie in bed.Wehavemanypro-grammes designed to assist them in theirrecovery.We provide structure, a good diet,a creativeworkshop and a gym, to namebuta few benefits,” says Visser. “We are ratherunique in the fact thatwe don’t have formeraddicts on the payroll, but rather profes-sional, qualified and registered staff.We do,however, make use of ex-addict volunteers.We have the therapeutic services of a psy-chologist, a biokineticist, social workers, ateacher and a spiritual counsellor.”

The enormous drugproblem facing theWest-ern Cape receives plentyof coverage, but accord-ing to Visser some of thedrug addictions are un-derplayed.“We see the ugly side

of dagga addiction. Itblocks the normal cogni-tive and emotional de-velopment of adoles-cents. We have had pa-tients here in theirthirties with the mentaland emotional capacityof teenagers. Their sense

of responsibility is so far removed from re-ality that it seems almost a lost cause. Somemay even become psychotic with regularuse.”As with all organisations of Ramot’s ilk,

sufficient funds will always be an issue.“Donations from the public are invalua-

What if TygerBurger weren’t a news-paper, but a broadcasting agency?

What if you weren’t bound to lis-ten to hyper local news impacting on thesuburb you live in, but rather the northernsuburbs as a whole?

Would this then contradict what Tyger-Burger stands for?

Followers of the newspaper on Facebookwould have noticed a new feature – a weeklywrap-up video – posted every Tuesday.

In this short video some of the articlesthat appear in the newspaper are highlight-ed, giving you the biggest weekly news fromthe northern suburbs in bite-sized chunks.

Some broadcasters bring you globalnews, some focus on a particular city, butno-one targets a relatively small area suchas the northern suburbs.

This means, of course, that the newspapercontinues to set the bar of hyper local con-tent across all mediums.

One of WP Media’s journalists, BrendenRuiter, asked himself how one can spreadthe news in a digital world, and make it aseasy as possible for Facebook users to stayup to date.

“The answer was simple,” he says.“Why not a weekly news bulletin? We

started a month or two ago and the populari-ty of the videos is for all to see. It’s still awork in progress, of course, with finer de-tails still being ironed out.”

A couple of minutes a week to stay up todate with news headlines? The viewer’sconvenience is clearly the catch phrase.

Another imminent adoption will be roll-ing text, which will mean one can watch thevideo with no sound if necessary.

In essence, it is a news broadcast with avery brief description of the chosen articles.

times in 17 years. Suffice to say, I knowwhat I’m talking about when it comes torental prices.It has also struck me how little home

owners know about the price of renting adecent place in Cape Town.All they are concerned about is wheth-

er they will be paying a little more or alittle less next month due to the interestrate.As rental tenants we face an industry

standard annual price hike of 10%!Every year we are 10% poorer! Add

half a cup of Eskom and a spoonful ofinflation and you have a baked monstros-ity that chips teeth.

In just sevenyears from nowone can expect topay double onepays now!A shoestring

budget can only becut so much. Soonthere will be noshoestring left!Agents and

owners who rentout their propertieshave no problemgetting tenantsbecause of thegreat migration

from the rest of the country to CapeTown.Someone ought to tell Gautengers

perhaps they are better off in the north.I compared renting prices from Gaut-

eng and Cape Town this week. I fullyexpected to see a similarity in what youcan get for R10 000 a month.With that money I can rent a nice

townhouse with an impressive garden inone of the best security complexes inPretoria. In Cape Town I have seensmaller townhouses with smaller gardensin Kraaifontein go for R10 000.I love Cape Town, but something

drastically needs to happen to curbrenting prices, which are quite obviouslycompletely out of control.The only way to keep head above water

seems to buy property.The other day I went into a book store

and saw one in the self-help section aboutempowering a middle income householdto buy a house in South Africa.I paged through it in disbelief and

More often than not when ourgovernment hospitals appear inthe papers, they take the rap.This time I’m writing to say aspecial thank you to theexcellent team at the SpecialCare Unit, Obstetric andGynaecology, of TygerbergHospital.I am a foreigner who has

lived in and loved Cape Townfor the past five years. Al-though living healthily with ahealth complication known assickle cell anemia, I knewhaving children would be nomean feat for me.When I fell pregnant with my

first daughter in 2013, mydoctor referred me to theSpecial Care Unit at Tygerberg.I met Professor Hull and histeam back then and it was awonderful experience beingmanaged by them. Although Iwas in the hospital for the mostpart of the pregnancy, I had noregrets. Hence I returned barelytwo years later in 2015. Again,this team was up to the task interms of professionalism, careand the help they rendered toensure I had another healthybaby and that my health didn’tdeteriorate.Sickle cell anemia is not a

health complication that doctorssee frequently in South Africa.For some of the doctors on theteam it was their first encoun-ter of a patient with sickle cellanemia and being pregnant wasa very high risk. Hull and histeam went over and above thecall of duty. seated inhisMilnertonhomewherehiswallsare lined with the faces of the all the enter-tainers he’s helped along his ownmusic jour-ney – a career spanning five decades.Affectionately known by many Capetoni-

ans as “Mr Showbiz”, Alvon was recentlyhonoured with a Naledi Lifetime Achieve-mentAward for his contribution to the SouthAfrican entertainment industry.“To win that award was wonderful; it was

absolutely stunning for me, because Ithought I was a forgotten man.”Alvon spent a large portion of his career

in Johannesburg where he won a GalloAward and Three Leaf Award (now calledFleur du Cap Theatre Awards) for his break-out role as the Pharoh in Joseph and theAmazing Technicolour Dreamcoat- a role heplayed inmore than 3000 performances of theproduction.The now 75-year-old returned to Cape

Town at the age of 42. “Then I built a wholenew career here.” Alvon admits to workingveryhard, hiringhalls and settinguphis ownshows. “I had to believe in myself that thiswas all going to come together and slowly butsurely this became a way of life for me.”His Cape Town chapter turned out to be as

Western Province and Bowls SouthAfrica are going full tilt at gettingschools involved with their youth

development lawn bowls programme.“Let’s get the ball rolling” is a massive ef-

fort to revive the sport specifically target-ing our youth for the future in the sport ofbowls,” says Glenda Pontes from the Good-wood Bowling Club, who is also involvedwith the Western Province Bowls StandingCommittee Development and is the drivingforce behind the initiative.

Trevor Davis, executive member ofBowls SA, Anina Black, member of the na-tional standing committee membershipand marketing, and Leon Venter, convenerof the Western Province standing commit-tee development, are just some of the peoplethat have offered to assist and give advice.

“Goodwood Bowling Club, like so manyother bowling clubs in the country, hasseen a decline in membership, mostly dueto older members passing away. The clubhas been in existence since 1963 and has agood track record with many a district play-er, and is a strong role player in WesternProvince,” says Pontes.

“We have decided that we do not want tobe one of the clubs to close our doors andhave set out on a road to revive the club andgrow the number of members,” she boasts.

The Goodwood Bowling Club announced

that 22-year-old Protea player Anneke Sny-man has come on board to be the face of thecampaign.

Anneke, a Bredasdorp and Boland playerresiding in Cape Town, is a dual memberat the Goodwood Bowling Club. She is pas-sionate about bowls and keen to see bowlsbeing taken to the townships and more chil-dren playing the game.

In order for this venture to be a success,schools must buy into the idea and help in-troduce the game of bowls to their learners.That is where the next generation of cham-pions will come from, and that is the pointof this whole exercise.

It’s been said many times over that bowlsmust get rid of the dreadful tag of “old man’smarbles”. For this to happen the messagethat bowls is fun, exciting and the sport forall ages must get out.
