mation from the public.The Operation Combat team arrested the

suspects at a flat inLeonsdale onWednesday4 May at about 18:00 where the ammunitionand drugs were found hidden on the premis-es.Sergeant Esmerelda Pheiffer, spokesper-

son of Elsies River police, says when the Op-eration Combat team arrived at the flat theyspotted an unknown man running into one

of the flats at Orange Court in Leonsdale.“Police officers then gave chase and found

the man. He was searched and police foundan undisclosed amount of tik in his posses-sion,” she says.Pheiffer says on further investigation the

police also confiscated ammunition found inpossession of an unknown woman and twomen who were also in the flat at the time ofthe search.All the suspects were arrested and taken

to the police station.“In the flat the police confiscated 62 pack-

ets of tik with a street value of R5000 as wellas 140 9mm live rounds of ammunition and68 shotgun rounds,” she says.

The suspects aged between the age of 17and 36 were charged respectively for posses-sion of drugs and ammunition, and they ap-peared in Goodwood Magistrate’s Court onFriday 6 May.The suspects are all linked to the “Terrible

Gang” operating in Elsies River.Station commander Brigadier Zingisa

Manci applauded the combat unit for theirswift reaction on the information received,which lead to the huge bust.Phieffer says Manci further thanked the

public for their part in ensuring that infor-mation reached the police which led to thesuccessful confiscation and arrest of theseperpetrators.

In an effort to showprimary school childrenthat reading can be fun, Valhalla Park Li-brary hosted their 13th annual reading com-petition last month.Several schools in the surrounding area

took part in the competition.The schools included the Montana, Val-

park, Mondevideo and Parkvale primaryschools.Theresa Denton, senior librarian at Val-

halla Park Library, says because of safetyconcerns only one school, KalksteenfonteinPrimary, did not join in on the fun.“The principal decided to rather keep

their learners at school to avoid unneces-sary conflict,” she says.The learners were first entertained by

Valhalla Park educators all dressed in theirfavourite book character costumes to cele-brate World Book Day.Themaster of ceremonies, VincentVoegt,

an assistant librarian at Ottery Library, en-tertained the learners with songs.A well-known group, Keith Tabisher and

his ensemble, entertained the learners withsome classical pieces.Among the judges was principal of Beau-

that boys are in the minority when it comesto reading competitions,” Denton says.She explains that boys shy away from

reading especially if they have a low self-es-teem and their reading abilities are not upto scratch.“The staff infused a love for reading by

mixing it with entertainment and by show-ing children what fun reading can be,” sheadds.

While three elderly women fromBellville South were conned outof their pension grants, one wom-

worker, the elderly women claimed thateach one of them received a call from awoman who calls herself “Sandra” andsays she works for South Africa Social Se-curity Agency (Sassa).All four women received a call from

“Sandra” in April.“She sounds professional and obviously

convincing or these elderly womenwouldnot have fallen for her tricks,” Maritzsays.He explains that the woman “Sandra”

calls and has all the personal details of theSassa beneficiaries. She proceeds to readout the home address, identity number,Sassa card number and then asks the ben-

eficiary to confirm the details.“She then says to the person that there

is only one thing outstandingwhichneedsto be added to the system, and that is theirPIN code,” Maritz explains.She managed to get all four of the elder-

lywomen’s pinnumbersduring thephonecalls, and when it came to the day theirmonieswere paid out, they found theyhadnothing in their accounts.“This is heartbreaking for me. It is a

form of abuse and abuse of the systemwhich these women trusted. They do nothave any other form of income and, justlike that, the little bit that they do receivewas taken from them,” he says.Maritz says that something drastically

needs to change as this is not a local issue,but a national one. He believes the benefi-ciaries are picked at random and they aremanipulated by the person who callsthem.“One elderly woman told me that ‘San-

dra’ told her she needed the PIN numberfor safekeeping as she knewmany elderly

people often lose their PIN numbers andif they need it they could contact her,” hesays.Sihle Ngobese, spokesperson for Albert

Fritz, provincial minister of social devel-opment, says although the departmenthas no control over the operations of Sas-sa, which is a national entity they havebeen assisting them by bringing com-plaints of grant abuse and fraud to theirattention.“The departmentwill assist these ladies

in this regard, and Sassawill be requestedto look into the matter with urgency,”Ngobese says.Captain Martin Holmes, acting station

commander of Bellville South police, saysno one has come forward to report a caseof fraud, but he encourages those whohave fallen victim to come forward.“We are aware of similar incidents re-

ceived reports last year, but no one hascome forward to open a case recently. Itis important for people to report it so thatthe matter can be investigated,” he says.

TheBishop Lavis Development Forumhas en-dorsed a previous decisionmade at a differentmeeting to call on several sectors in the com-munity to address safety and security issues.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday16 May from 19:00 to 21:00 at the John RamsayHigh School.

Those called upon to join the meeting in-clude the station commander of Bishop Lavispolice, the local neighbourhood watch, LawEnforcement, religious forums in the commu-nity, principal associations as well as the de-partment of social services.

The aim of the meeting is to look at collec-tive and holistic ways of dealing with thescourge of drug-related crime in the area, bur-glaries in the CBD area, school break-ins, par-enting issues.They will also concentrate on finding solu-

tions rather than repeating and getting stuckin the problems.

Parents, teachers and the community ofMatroosfontein will soon see theirown cadets perform at an exhibition

later this month.Since the establishment if a cadet corps

at Elsbury Primary School by the BishopLavis Cadet Corps founder, over 54 learnershave joined the corps.Founder of the Bishop Lavis Cadet Corps,

Peter Johnson, says the interest from theyouth has been overwhelming and exciting.

“We are excited to see somany young peo-plewanting to be part of the corps and grow-ing into mature young adults as they gothrough the process,” he says.

Johnson says, since the Elsbury PrimarySchool learners joined the corps there hasbeen a huge difference in their behaviourand attitude towards their school work.“Wearealwaysgettingpositive responses

from parents and teachers who say thecorps have helped the learners to becomemore confident and more responsible whenit comes to their academics,” he says.

The corps aim to not only teach the chil-dren themarching steps, but they also learnlife skills.

“We live in an environment where crime.gangsterism, drugs and domestic abuse isrife and we need to be able to speak to thelearners about this so that they can under-stand they are not alone and that there areways of dealing with it,” Johnson says.

On Saturday 28 May the Bishop Lavis Ca-det Corps and Elsbury Primary SchoolCorps will hold an exhibition where theywill show off their marching skills to theirparents, teachers, guardians and communi-ty.However, many of the learners are still in

need of gloves and hats for the exhibition.Johnson says they welcome any financial

donation or if anyone is interested in donat-ing the gloves and hats they are welcome tocontact him.“We would really appreciate the support

Over 80 vehicles have reportedly beenstolen in the last four months in El-sies River.

The cars stolen range from the Toyota Co-rolla, Toyota Tazz and Conquest, Volkswag-en Golf as well as vehicle models from theearlier 1990s.Sergeant Esmerelda Pheiffer, spokesper-

son of Elsies River police, says bakkies re-ported stolen include the Ford Bantam,Mazda Rustler and according to the latestreport also the Isuzu bakkie.“Most of these thefts occurred in the park-

ing bay behind the GrandWest Casino andalso near and opposite the Elsies River DayHospital,” she says.Pheiffer says police suspect that most of

these vehicles are being used for second-hand parts and for selling of scrap.“We would like to warn the public to be

extra cautious in ensuring that their vehi-cles are properly locked or guarded by

someonewhen attending to the dayhospitalin Elsies River or even to rather make useof the secure parking facility inside theGrandWest Casino premises,” she says.Meanwhile police are investigating the

cases reported, but also want to call on thepublic to report any illegal “chop shop” op-erating in the area, selling of secondhandcar parts or when they notice that cars orbakkies are being stripped regularly.Pheiffer says police are also concerned

about the increase in smash-and-grab inci-dentswhichoccuron the corner of 35thAve-nue and Owen Road.“Motorists must be vigilant when ap-

proaching the traffic lights at this intersec-tion and avoid talking or texting on theircellphones, as this is themost common itemstolen during a smash-and-grab incident,”she says.Other intersections where robberies also

occur regularly, is the corner of NorwoodandVikingWay and also peoplemakinguseof public transport at the corner of HaltRoad and Balvenie Avenue in Elsies River.

The City of Cape Town’s Social Devel-opment and Early Childhood Devel-opment Directorate has recruited

and trained nearly 400 people in this fi-nancial year to participate in its home-based care programme.

According to a statement, the director-ate started the initiative in 2014 as partof the Vulnerable Groups Programme, tolend a hand to elderly residents in needof assistance around the home, but alsocompanionship.

The home-based caregivers pro-gramme employs workers through theCity’s Expanded Public Works Pro-gramme (EPWP) who render social careservices through psychosocial support,companionship, housekeeping and lighthousehold duties as well as referrals toother social services.

The caregivers offer their services toseniors in their home environment andat old-age homes, clinics and hospitals.

In the first year, 2580 elderly residentssigned up for the programme. Last yearthat number more than doubled to 5557.

This year saw a high level of interestagain, prompting the directorate to re-vise its target of 300 caregivers to 400.

All of the caregivers have completedtheir training and have started provid-ing services to clients.

Mayco member for social developmentand early childhood development, Su-zette Little, says this speaks to the vul-nerability of elderly residents – many ofwhom are no longer able to do things forthemselves, like cleaning the house oreven their personal grooming.

The home-based caregivers aresourced from the City’s job seeker data-base and, after their recruitment, thecaregivers undergo training sessions.

They are also trained on how to identi-fy older people in need through commu-nity profiling and to provide basic relieffor family members of older people.

Accredited first-aid training, commu-nication and companionship aspects arealso addressed with the trainees.

The home-based caregivers have beentrained and appointed to offer the follow-ing services: Respite relief for familymembers and caregivers of seniors, com-panionship, reading, assistance in prep-aration of meals, assistance with lightcleaning and laundry duties, and refer-ral of seniors requiring hands-on care ormedical care to the districts for support.

“The caregivers deserve a specialthank you for this service. Home-basedcare is not an easy task, especially assome seniors see outsiders as a threat totheir independence. In many cases thecaregivers are also the ones who identifycases of abuse and assist with interven-tions to help stop this cycle,” Little says.

Die onontbeerlike werk van die Tyger-berg-hospitaalskool kan nie genoegbeklemtoon word nie.

Ontmoet Riaan*, ’n student by ’n vooraan-staande kollege.

Riaan se lewe was op ’n verwoestingspadnadat hy op sy pa se lyk afgekom het nadathy selfdood gepleeg het.

In dié beproewende tyd het hy dwelms be-gin gebruik en in die psigiatriese eenheidvan die Tygerberg-hospitaal beland.

Die depressiewe jong man was vir tweejaar uit die skool – ten spyte van die sukses-volle psigiatriese hulp wat hy ontvang het,was sy toekoms maar donker.

AbetprogramDie personeel by die skool het hom op

vlak vier van die Abet-program gesit, watgelykstaande is aan graad 9 op skool.

Hulle het alles vir Riaan gedoen om homuit die put van ellende te trek.

Daar was nie altyd geld vir hom om skooltoe te kom nie, maar die personeel het gelduit hul eie sakke bymekaar geskraap omhom die beste toekoms moontlik te bied.

Hy het uiteindelik sewe onderskeidingsbehaal en studeer nou om ’n dieselmegani-kus te word.

Nie alle stories is egter so positief soos Ri-aan s’n nie, sê Susan Potgieter, die skool-hoof.

Die skool is daar vir kinders wat vir ’nlang tydperk in die hospitaal behandel moetword en dan daarna weer terug moet gaanna ’n gewone skool.

Die kinders is baie keer uiters siek, maardie skoolpersoneel laat hulle nie onderkrynie. Hulle speel ’n kardinale rol in die kindse lewe.

“Ons probeer hard om nie daai diep emo-sionele verbintenis met kinders te maaknie. Ons werk nie vir die hospitaal nie, sobaie min inligting oor die kind se diagnoseis tot ons beskikking.

“Dit is eintlik goed so, want hoe minderjy weet, hoe minder weerbaar is jy.

“Dis baie hartseer. Baie keer kan jy sien

die kind gaan agteruit, maar dan kom jy te-rug werk toe en die kind is weer daar.

“Dan is daar die ander wat jy dink reg isen môre is die kind dan nie meer daar nie,”sê Potgieter.

Die personeel druk egter deur die swaartye met die wete dat die skool se positiewerol nou al oor 54 jaar strek en daar duisendekinders is wat beter af is te danke aan hulle.

Om genoeg geld bymekaar te skraap is ui-teraard ’n groot uitdaging vir die skool.

Hulle kry ondersteuning van die rege-ring, maar volgens Potgieter is dit nooit ge-noeg nie.

“Ons sou so graag meer personeel wouaanstel,” gaan sy voort.

“Kyk, ons bring siek kinders van die hos-pitaal hierheen, partykeer in rolstoele. Onswil hulle wegvat uit die omgewing van siekmense.”

Nie ver van beddensDie skooltjie is op die hospitaalterrein, so

die kinders word nie ver van hul beddensgeneem nie.

“Die kinders wat maande in traksie lê, ofdié wat eenvoudig net te siek is om uit diehospitaal te kom, moet by hul beddens on-derrig word.

In hierdie stadium het ons een juffrou watdit permanent doen, maar sy kan net so agtkinders ’n dag sien. Dis nie naastenby ge-noeg nie.”

Een van die skool se grootste geldinsame-lings van die jaar vind op Saterdag 28 Meivan 09:30 tot 12:00 in die Vredelust-aktiwi-teitsentrum in Bellville plaas.

Michelle Luscombe, ’n ontvanger van ’nskenkershart, sal praat by die byeenkomsmet die tema “Uit die hart”.

Viljoen Retief sal gedurende die oggendso twee of drie liedjies sing en daar sal ookitems uitgeloot word.

Die skool en die kinders maak staat opbroodnodige skenkings van die publiek, soselfs al kan jy nie die vroueoggend bywoonnie, kan jy altyd ’n paar rand vir die skoolskenk.

Wagging tails are attractive to children.Unfortunately, the public is ill-informedthat if a dog’s tail is wagging, it means thatit is happy and safe to approach. This is farfrom the truth. Children are also taughtthat hugging and kissing is an acceptableform of affection. To humans thatmight be,but to canines this is perceived as confron-tational.“Fundamentally, humans and dogs

speak a different language. When commu-nication is misunderstood, people get bit-ten,” says Walpole, a dog behaviourist andtrainer.Dogs could also turn on their owners as

a result of a number of reasons.Walpole says dogs that bite their owners,

or anyone else, could have an underlyingmedical condition. The dog could also bepushed to a point where it has no choice orcould feel that its life is being threatened.Harsh and confrontational training meth-ods could also be a contributing factor withregards to human related dog aggression.Walpole says that people should pur-

chase dogs from reputable breeders tomin-imise the risk of being bitten.“If youwant to purchase a puppy, do your

homework to match the right breed withyour lifestyle. Join a reputable positive re-inforcement socialisation school. Thereshould be continued training to build agood bond between you and your dog. Youshould seek assistance immediately ifthere are any early signs thatmake you un-comfortable,” said Walpole.She provides the following tips and urges

parents to educate their children:“Be respectful to your dog. Research and

learn how to ‘speak dog’. There are a num-ber of body signals that a dog displays toindicate that it is uncomfortable and needsspace or that it likes what you are doing.By watching your dog’s body language andunderstanding what your dog is saying,you are able to stop or change the reasonfor your dog feeling uncomfortable.“Learn what your dog likes and dislikes

and respect these needs. A dog should notbe treated like a toy or tested to see how tol-erant it is. Do not poke, push or sit on a dogor pull its tail. Stop what you are doing ifa dog showsdiscomfort. Signs of discomfortinclude when the dog turns its head awayfrom you, when the dog yawns, flicks histongue out of his mouth or licks his nose,when the dog’s body freezes, when itmovesaway, lifts its lips or growls. Also stopwhatyou are doing when the dog shows whale-eye (pronounced whites of the eye). This isoftenmisunderstood as a ‘guilty look’whenit is actually an appeasement gesture in re-sponse to the stimulus.“Never corner a dog and do not repri-

mand a dog when it growls. This is a lan-guage prior to a bite. Growling means thatyou should leave the dog alone. If your dogbites someone, donot place the dog in a sim-ilar situation. If necessary, confine the dogin a safe area with water and shelter andimmediately seek the assistance of a quali-fied trainedandprofessional animal behav-iourist.”Walpole says anunfamiliar dog shouldbe

ignored. “Do not encourage an unfamiliardog to approach you. Quietly and calmlywalk away. Do not turn your back on thedog but rather try to have your body facingsideways toward the dog,” said Walpole.“If you are unable to escape an attacking

dog, place yourself in a foetal position withyour head tucked toward your chest andcover your head with your hands.”

Durbell is tans die houers van die Cell C Commu-nityCup, noubekendasdieGouebeker, endieklubfokus daarop om die Superliga vanjaar te wen.

Volgens Bobby Joubert, Durbell se afrigter,word daar nie spelers in sy span uitgesonder nie,wantdit is ’n spanpogingenelkeenmaaksybydraeom tot die sukses van die span by te dra.

“Ons het waarlik ’n jong dinamiese span metgeen uitblinkers nie, maar eerder onselfsugtige in-dividue wat in die span se visie inkoop. Benewensdie Gouebeker speel ons in die Superliga A van dieWP se klubkompetisie, waar ons onder meer teenspanne soos Maties, Ikeys, Hamiltons, Valsbaai enTygerberg speel. Ná ons sukses verlede jaar in dieCell C Community Cup-kompetisie het ons vyfdein die Superliga-kompetisie geëindig,” sê hy.

“Die Gouebeker-kompetisie is baie belangrik virdie volhoubaarheid van klubspelers wat nie stu-deer nie en dit bied hulle ook die geleentheid omkontrakte los te speel, omdat die wedstryde op tele-visie uitgesaai word. ’n Voorbeeld hiervan isGarth April, wat by ons klub was en tans losskakelvir die Sharks in die Superugby-kompetisie speel.

“Hy het juis onlangs eiehandig die Sharks sepunte (15) in hul sege van 15-14 oor die Highlandersin Dunedin met sy skopvoet aangeteken,” sê hy.

Bobby is geen onbekende aan provinsiale rugbynie. Hy was van 2008 tot 2010 die heelagter van dieSWD-Arende en hy ken van onder druk speel, enwat die verwagtinge is van jou spanmaats, onder-steuners en bestuur. “Ná my SWD-dae het ek byDurbell aangesluit en het tien wedstryde vir dieklub gespeel. Daarna is ek aangestel as hulp-afrig-ter van die eerste span saam met Jan Loubser.

“Voordat ek by die SWD aangesluit het, het ek

in 2007/2008 in Frankryk vir die klub Aurillacoisgespeel en het bietjie oorsese ondervinding opge-doen. Dit was altyd my droom om eendag my rug-bykennis aan ander oor te dra en te deel en ek hetnou die kans hier by Durbell. Garth was die eerstespeler wat ek onder hande geneem en gehelp hetom sy skopwerk te verbeter,” sê Bobby.

Maar hoe het dit gekom dat hy by afrigting be-trokke geraakhet? “Carel Steenkamp, die destydsevoorsitter in 2015, het my as speler genader, wantek was verantwoordelik vir die ontwikkelingspro-gramme by die klub. Om afrigting te doen, was ’nnatuurlike oorgangsproses.

“Die klub is baie betrokke in die gemeenskap enhelp met afrigting en speler-ontwikkeling onderdie vaandel van die Masibambane-sportstigting.

“Twee spelers wat juis uit die ontwikkeling-strukture van die stigting kom en op wie ons baietrots is, is Roderick Moses en Angus Cleophas.

“Albei was verlede jaar deel van die wenspanwat die Cell C Community Cup gewen het. Jy moetonthou die spanne wat in die Gouebeker-kompeti-sie speel, is goeie spanne en dis nie net sommervir oor hulle loop om te wen nie.
