MATRICS: DELFT SCHOOL GATHERS ANOTHER AWARD FOR THEIR PASS RATE

Hindle High School in Delft is provingtheir matrics have the ability to excelfollowing the school claiming another

award for improving their percentage passin the province for 2014.

While the school only started in 2009, theyhave a proud record of matric passes and re-ceived an award for their increases in the

category for improvement ever since theirfirst matric class in 2012.

Principal Calvin Manchest beams withpride when acknowledging the achieve-ment.

“At Hindle High we all work together tomake a difference in the lives of ourlearners,” he said.

“From our humble beginnings in pre-fabclasses we have always focussed on makingour learners realise that there is no bounda-

ry to their potential in life - it just takes hardwork.

“In 2012 we had our first matriculants (32learners) and we had a pass rate of 71,8%,with our top learner Michael Booysenachieving an A in tourism.

“The next year we had 40 learners and a95,8% pass rate with the top learner, Court-ney Pakeman, achieving five B’s.

“Last year we had 80 learners and a 92,4%pass rate.

“The highlight is that Kwanda Silekwaachieved four A’s, including 100% in MathLit.”

Manchest said while all the staff playedtheir part in motivating learners, a catalystwas also the involvement of Dr Izanette vanSchalkwyk who introduced some major ac-tivities to motivate the learners.

“We have been blessed with the involve-ment of this special lady,” he says.

Vanaf 1 Februarie gaan die Stad Kaapstad’n nuwe beurtkragskedule instel.

Die huidige skedule wat op die dae vandie week gegrond is, is in 2008 ingestel engereeld opdateer.

Dit was spesifiek ontwerp vir toevalligebeurtkrag gedurende aanvraagtye na hoëkrag, wat sedert 2008 die norm was.

Sedert die einde van verlede jaar het Es-kom se nasionale beheersentrum egterbeurtkrag op ’n gereelde basis en oor nawe-ke toegepas wat ’n situasie geskep het waarinwoners op die onmoontlikste tye en daevan die week beurtkrag ervaar het.

Om dit aan te spreek het die Stad ’n nuwebeurtkragskedule opgestel wat groter rota-sie toelaat volgens die dae van die week.

“Met die nuwe skedule wil die Stad verse-ker dat inwoners geskeduleerde beurtkragopverskillende tye endae ervaar en sodoen-de kan die ongerief van beurtkrag oor allegebiede roteer word,” sê Ernest Sonnen-berg, lid van die stad se burgemeestersko-

mitee vir nutsdienste.Vanaf 1 Februarie gaan die Stad beurt-

krag volgens die nuwe skedule implemen-teer wanneer Eskom hulle opdrag gee omdit te doen. ’n Pamfletmet die nuwe skeduleen die verskeie kragvoorsieninsgebiede oordie stad heen, verskyn in hierdie week seuitgawe van TygerBurger. Inwoners wordaangeraai omhierdie pamflette te hou sodathulle voorsorg vir beurtkrag kan tref wan-neer Eskom dit vereis.

Die skedule sal ook vanaf 1 Februarie opdie Stad se webtuiste verskyn sodat inwo-ners onmiddelike toegang tot die jongste in-ligting kan hê. Inwoners kan dié inligtingverkry by www.capetown.gov.za/loadshed-ding en kan ook ‘n SMS stuur na 31220 of’n e-pos stuur aan [email protected] munisipaliteit kan ook gevolg word opTwitter en Facebook.

Indien iemand se krag vir ’n langer tyd-perk af is as wat in die skedule genoemword, moet ’n SMS na 31220 gestuur word.

vate learners.“He is one of our positive role models and

if children see what he is achieving we hopethat it inspires them,” continues Manchest.“At the moment we are trying to assist

Kwanda, who is going to study IT, becausethe family had to borrow money for his reg-istration, but the rest of the fees are goingto be a problem.“He was not able to get a bursary and we

are determined to try to help him. My hopeis that we can get partnerships going withbusiness to start a bursary fund here be-cause there are so many who need help tofurther their studies.“As teacherswehave invested ourpassion

van oudpresident NelsonMandela se tronk-bewaarders op Robbeneiland en by die Poll-smoor-gevangenis. Hy het verlede jaar ’nboek die lig laat sien oor sy vriendskap metMandela. Dié boek is in 16 lande en 10 taleversprei en in sommige lande is dit reeds 4keer herdruk. In sekere dele van Amerikawas die boek 4 weke lank die topverkoper.Maar terwyl mense in ondermeer Ameri-

ka, Engeland en Duitsland hulle verwonderaan die storie, bly Brand rustig in sy huisinRuyterwacht regoor die Elsiesrivier-poli-siestasie. “Ek verwyl my vryetyd deur mo-tors wat in ongelukke was te restoureer endan te verkoop. Dit is vir my lekker ommetmy hande te werk,” sê Brand, wat steeds opdie eiland werk. Hy bestuur die winkels.

Valhalla Park library is on a mission tomake reading a priority for learners in theirneighbourhood.In 2013 they started the Read For My Fu-

ture @ My Library project and it continuesto empower learners in the area.Jerome Fortuin, one of the librarians, ex-

plained they were motivated to start thisproject when dealing with learners everyday.“Many of them come to us for help with

assignments and projects and we realisedthat their reading skills were not developedenough for them to understand what wasneeded from them,” he said.“Parents also requested our assistance

with the same reading challenges so weknew we had to start something to stop thisvicious cycle of illiteracy.”Fortuin pointed out that the project start-

ed in April 2013 after hosting a presentationwith principals and teachers explaining the

project in detail.“We needed to show the children that

through reading they can influence their ownfuture, get better school grades, make in-formed decisions and this in turn will lead tocareers and financial independence, lesscrime, less poverty.”Last year some of the top readers experi-

enced some early rewards when local wardcouncillorMichaelBritz stepped in to supportthe project and they hosted a prize-giving cer-emony during December.“This was a highlight for us, and most im-

portantly for the learners,who got a first tasteof the rewards of loving to read.“We would like to thank the councillor for

his on-going support and call on learners tojoin us this year with the awards becomingan annual event.“There is also a call out there for any busi-

The next South African chess grandmastercould come from the northern suburbs.To be more accurate, he, or she, might be

contemplating their moves in the ranks ofthe players at Webner Primary School inRavensmead.Judging by the way that the game has ta-

ken off at the school this could well be a rea-lity.While the world’s newest grandmaster,

Kenny Solomon, was making his moves inNamibia to win the Africa Open Chess title,three learners from the school were part ofthe WP under-9 team taking part in the SAJunior Championship in Kimberley.Jordan Jacobs, Tyrique Dirks, and Car-

nic Stuurman are the youngsters who aremaking theirmarkon the gameandmakingthe school proud.This is a remarkable achievement since

the school only became a focus school forchess last year.While WP may have come second in the

tournament, coach Grant Adams is veryproud of their achievement as part of theteam.“Jordan was one of the top players win-

ning all of his seven games,” he said.

“Carnicwon six of his games andTyriquealso did well winning four of his gamesagainst opposition that have been playingfor much longer.“This is only the start for them and their

attitude tells me that they have the talentand concentration to go further.”Since the programme started at the

school the number of players has increasedto over 100 and more are joining as news oftheir success spreads.Latest news is that the school is establis-

hing a club in the area that will include allwho are interested from other schools, pri-mary and high, as well as the general pu-blic.“Oncewe’ve established the clubwewant

to start regular tournaments in the area andpartake in various leagues in the Cape,”continued Adams.“The game has made a big difference at

the school helping children with their con-centration and it can grow bigger but weneed partners from the community and bu-siness to join us.“We want to make it more exciting with

Almost 4 000 traffic violation tickets wereissued at the intersection of Old Paarl Roadand Harrod Drive in Bellville in Decemberalone. This follows the installation of newspeedand traffic light cameras at this inter-section in November last year.According to Brenden van der Merwe,

councillor for ward 3, this section of roadexperiences high traffic volumes andmoto-rists regularly exceed the speed limit, po-sing a threat to other road users.“Initial statistics reported during the

first month of operation a very high inci-dence of speeding and traffic light violati-ons. In December alone, 2 492 fines were is-sued to motorists driving in an easterly di-rection above the 60km/h speed limit, or forignoring the traffic signals . In the westerlydirection, a further 1 321 fines were issued

during December,” Van der Merwe saysThe offences dropped sharply in January

when word spread about the cameras, to astill very high 963 fines issued to date,which highlights the extent of the problemand proved the cost of installing the camerasystem was warranted.Drivers have been urged to slow down

and obey the road rules.“Speeding is amajor cause of fatalities on

our roads and the camera systemwill serveto deter reckless driving behaviour. Thisintervention will hopefully contribute to asafer environment for all residents. I appealto motorists to respect the rules of the roadand their fellow road users and to realisethat speed in fact does kill. Please drive ca-refully and within the confines of the law,”says Van Der Merwe.

The school holiday was a season of sharingfor an organisation that started in Bonte-heuwel and has since spread to Delft.The chairperson of subcouncil 5, Rose

Rau, explained the seasonof sharing startedwhen she approached Ian Iverson, a coun-cillor in theClaremont area, to assist a sum-mer school project at Protea Primary inBonteheuwel.“The response that we got from him was

incredible, we received six car loads of sta-tionery, gamesand sports equipment for theproject, as well as some foodstuff,” she said.“This project was started by two ward

committee members, Faghmeda Kahn andHelen Mandean, who then included the Ab-original People’s Congress and further vol-unteers from the area.“Activities, which included cleaning and

painting two classrooms at the school aswell as providing a programme of sport andrecreational activities for the children,started on 17 December.“The generous donations also enabled

them tohost aChristmasparty on 24Decem-

ber and there are now plans to use theseclassrooms as an aftercare centre for therest of the year.”Rau was especially excited that the dona-

tions they received were farmore than theyneeded, which enabled to spread the shar-ing by helping the Delft Street Sports andRecreation Association in Blikkiesdorp,and Hope 4 Destiny in Eindhoven.“CouncillorsMichael Toko,Courtneyvan

The positive power of partnerships betweenbusinesses and schools is set down in a pub-lication that highlights how radical changecan come about in education.Partners for Possibility is an organisation

that begun in 2010 as aproject of theSympho-nia organisation that has brokered ground-breaking partnerships between businessleaders and schools, and is still reaping as-tonishing results.Last week the organisation hosted the

Western Cape launch of the book Partnersfor Possibility written by Mandy Collins. Itchronicles the story of a community build-ing process and leadership project that hasthe potential to change and empower educa-tion in South Africa.The book details its beginnings at Kanne-

meyer Primary School in Grassy Parkwhenone of the founders of the organisation, Lou-ise van Rhyn, approached principal RidwanSamodien with the idea of partnering to im-prove conditions for learners.Fast forward to 2015 and that partnership

is flourishing and the model has spread to200 schools across the country.It has been an exciting time and some of

those foundingmemberswerepart of apanelwho discussed their experiences at thelaunch. Among those attendingwere TrevorManuel and Professor Brian O’Connell.The book details ten partnerships that

have made a major difference to schools.At The Valley Primary in Durbanville,

principal Priscilla August partnered withAnsonette van der Merwe of Capespan, afruit export company. The school faces prob-lems that included poor parent and commu-nity involvement, poor pupil discipline andunmotivated staff.In the first year they started to put their

plans in place.

Parents were given incentives to start tak-ing an interest in the school and day tripswere organised for the children to showthem life beyond their farm environment.One of the highlights of this partnership

was creating a school readiness and literacyprogramme. They have organised volun-teers from the community and surroundingareas who give their time to ensure the im-provement of the literacy skills at the school.The success of the partnership between

Perivale Primary in Grassy Park and DirectAxis also came under the spotlight withprincipal Denzil van Graan pointing out thefar-reaching influences of the partnership.The school faced a number of issues relat-

ed to drug and alcohol abuse in the sur-rounding area, poor academic results andunpaid school fees.Maria Hill explains how her approach to

helpingwas three-pronged: listening, givinghope, and steering.One of the aspects highlighted in this case-

study is howdiscipline has changedwith theintroduction of simple incentive measures.Van Graan, who was one of the panellists

at the launch, said the results were nothingless than remarkable.“The school has turned itself around on so

many fronts,” he said.Attendance has improved dramatically

and our Grade 7’s are being accepted at highperforming schools.“We’ve also introduced more extra-mural

activities and this has empowered ourlearners.”GerardMohamed fromMultisol’s partner-

ship with Holy Trinity in Elsies River exam-ined challenges such as high unemploymentamong parents, leading to a lack of homesupport and insufficient nutrition.This case study then outlines how work-

ing with principal Gary Faulman, work-shops were held to make the staff realisetheir strengths.

A number of projects have been started atthe school to enhance the learner’s educa-tion experience and Faulman feels that sofar this partnership has had a major effect.“The first and foremost is the faces of the

teachers. You can see that there is a bigchange in their morale, they feel more sup-ported and confident about their role nowthat they have identified themost importantissues and are able to look at it in a moreholistic way,” he said.ValdaClarke, fromPrudential Investment

Managers, was inspired to join the pro-gramme after seeing the sad state of her al-ma mater in Retreat. But, with that schoolnot part of the PFP project she chose to part-ner with Heathfield High.Here her partnership with princpal Mark

Engelbrecht has seen a marked improve-ment in learners’ marks, and the school haseven become part of a neighbourhood watchto reduce crime.Clarke pointed out that this partnership

has given her insight into the unique prob-lems that principals face.“They do not have the resources that busi-

ness has to call on,” she says.“It expected that they run the school like

a business but with limited expertise in IT,HR and finance.There are many more case studies in the

book and at the launch there was a strongsense the partnership movement was grow-ing.Trevor Manuel from the National Devel-

opment Programme (NDP) said that theproject was an example of active citizenrywhich was at the epicentre of the NDP.“Active citizenship is what is going to

drive change in education in South Africa,”he said.“This book proves that the meat of the is-

What started out as a funmusical pro-ject has become a fairly successfulendeavour for the members of Nort-

hern Suburbs band Borderline.The band was originally started by guita-

rists Michael Godfrey and Wyatt Peters lastyear.Michael had approached Wyatt to teach

him to play the blues.“And then he got the idea to start a band

and just play once at Eastwoods, perhaps,”Wyatt explains.As they went on, Wyatt found a bass play-

er, André van derMerwe, and the three star-ted rehearsing their songs. They had to playa showcase for the owner of Eastwoods befo-re they would be allowed to book a gig there.As luck would have it, a cajon player, Len

Miskin, happened to be at Eastwoods thatday. Luckier still, he happened to have hiscajon in the car, so the three invited him tojamwith them. Their first gigwas scheduledfor the very next day and Len became a per-manent member.The first gig became a second and so on

and the rest, as they say, is history.

Eclectic styleEastwoods’ management suggested that a

female vocalist may be more suitable fortheir audiences and so they decided to findone. They started off with another singer,but she wasn’t around long. Eventually therole went to Dominique Peters.At that stage the band were called The

Blues Collectors, a moniker they decided tochange to avoid being pigeon-holed.They were playing around with ideas

when “Borderline” came out, a name farmo-re suited to their eclectic style.“Our eventual aim is to do a whole lot of

original numbers,” explainsLen.While theyare playing some original music now, theirset also contains covers, but as Len points,out, they put their own interpretations onwell known songs.“We’ll sometimes turn a Bob Dylan song

into a reggae song,” Len says.Wyatt, who sang for the successful D7 aca-

pella group before, usually comes up withthe framework of their original songs beforetaking it to the band to work on.“We approach originals by playing to each

other’s strengths,” he says. Ultimately, Wy-att describes Borderline’s music as “looseand colourful”.Thinking back to their first gig, Wyatt

sayshe didn’t expect them tobe together thislong. It was at a show at Plaasteater that so-meone told him their sound was “fresh”which is why he thinks they are doing sowell. “It seems like there’s something newabout it,” he says.

DisciplineThey have built up a reasonable following

of fans who keep coming to shows. “We ma-naged to get people behind us who want tosee us,” Len says.Another contributing factor to the band’s

momentum is their disciplinewhen it comestomaking sure they rehearse andwork toge-ther regularly.“One of themain reasonswhy there is this

sort of magic feel, I think, is because Wyattand I are musically well connected,” Lensays. This leads to interesting improvisati-ons on stage and means that no two perfor-mances sound the same.“Sometimes those things just happen

spontaneously on stage,” Wyatt adds.For now, the band’s main goal is playing

as many shows as possible, not just in clubs,but also at festivals and private events. Theyare also interested in getting sponsors on bo-ard and making merchandise available forpurchase at their shows.Readers will get a chance to see the band

Youth inBonteheuwel enjoyed some fun du-ring the holidays when the department ofcommunity safety, in partnership with Ma-drasatul Yaqeen, held development pro-grammes for them.Bonteheuwel is plagued by drug abuse

and gang violence.MoulanaSedickKloppers, one of the orga-

nisers, pointed out that this youth safetyand religion programme had its sights oneducating the youth of Bonteheuwel aboutthe risks and dangers of drugs and crime,and providing spiritual upliftment.“The project’s objectives were to address

these issues and provide the youth with al-ternative ways of overcoming such challen-ges.”A drug awareness programme was held

at Ster-Kinekor where the youths wereshown an interactive 3D movie about thedangers of drug and substance abuse andmethods of prevention.“The interactive part of the film taught

the youth how to make the right decisionsabout drugs.”Yunus Davids, another organiser, also

spoke about another exciting activity whe-re theywere taught how to handle and over-come challenges.“The youthwere taken on a hike up Table

Mountain, many of them had never been sofar from Bonteheuwel and the objective he-re was to build positive relationshipsthrough team work,” he said.“Themountainwas viewed as an obstacle

and the youth needed to navigate throughand help each other along. They were enve-loped in the scenery that surrounded themand when they reached the top they weregiven a talk about adversity and achieve-ment.”Other activities that they enjoyed inclu-

ded hosting a kite festival, an indoor soccertournament, and a day at Bonteheuwelswimming pool where they were taught life

saving, survival drills and survival skills bythe lifeguards there.“The youth were in awe at the amazing

techniques used by the lifeguards,” conti-nued Kloppers.“They were also allowed to participate in

the different aspects of the programme. We

think the highlight was them competingwith each other on the surf boards.“A special thanks to the manageress Bel-

inda Samuels for the superb day.”The programme concluded with a soccer

tournament held under floodlights on thestreets.

place at thewheel of the potent Elva Porschesports car previously driven by Dawie Gousand Luki Botha before Koos drove it in thelate 1960’s. The vehicle has recently beencompletely rebuilt and fitted with a new

quad cam RSK Porsche motor.Another feature of the meeting will be the

return of Formula 1 to the northern suburbcircuit for the first time since the CapeGrand Prixmany long years ago. These carsare going to include Jody Scheckter’s 007-1Tyrrell/CosworthV8withwhich hewon the1974 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, aswell as the SwedishGPatAndersdorp,whileon his way to finishing third in the Formula1 World Championship that year.The balance of the single seater Fransch-

hoek contingent will feature the ex- SamTingle F1 Repco LDS, designed by South Af-

rica’s Doug Serrurier, as well as a Formula2 TeamGunston Chevron B25 and a Ford en-gined Formula Atlantic March 78B.The cars will stage a series of high speed
