BLIKKIESDORP: SHOOTING LEADS TO FURTHER VIOLENCE
Fearing for their livesGARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
A cellphone robbery led to the death ofa man in Blikkiesdorp on Sunday andnow tensions are running high with
threats of further violence. The incident occurred at about 17:00 when
two men went to an area in Blikkiesdorp toconfront a group about a robbery that oc-curred the previous day.
When this group was confronted about acellphone that was stolen, a scuffle ensuedbetween the accused and accuser – one alleg-edly a Young Gifted Bastards and the otheran Oka Boys member.
During this fight a firearm was drawn and
shots fired. In the aftermath 27-year-old Ryan Felkers
was shot in his chest and he subsequentlydied at the Delft Day Hospital.
This shooting then led to three more hous-es in the area being attacked where peoplewere assaulted, goods stolen and residentsthreatened.
Now people in the area are fearing fortheir lives and the tension in Blikkiesdorpis quite volatile.
Police are investigating a charge of mur-der, three of malicious damage to propertyand theft. No arrests have been made.
Authorities met with Blikkiesdorp com-munity leaders behind closed doors in theireffort to find strategies and interventions to
deal with these concerns and the threat. The law enforcement agencies are dealing
with the issue and according to police a 42-year-old-man was arrested on the murdercharge.
A resident from the area who did not wantto be named confirmed that since the shoot-ing people have been very scared.
“It feels like a war-zone because we arescared,” he says.
“There have been a number of small rob-beries that have taken place and sometimesthe victims know their attackers. That’swhen the problems start because they ap-proach family and friends to take the law in-to their own hands.
“It becomes a bigger problem when gangs
start getting involved because they associ-ate homes in areas surrounding the culpritsand start attacking them for no reason.”
Brigadier Hendrik Jansen, station com-mander at Delft stressed the need for calmin the area.
“We want to ensure the people in that areathat we will be increasing our presencethere,” he said.
“It is also important for people to remem-ber that they must not take the law into theirown hands.
“In circumstances where they recognisetheir attackers they must report it to the po-lice and we will take action. If they take thelaw into their own hands they will also beprosecuted.”
Umkhonto we Sizwecadres formed aguard of honour atthe funeral ofJoseph Aranes atthe St MatthewsCatholic Church inBonteheuwel.Aranes, a former MKmember andprovincial secretaryof the UDF duringthe fight againstapartheid, was alsoa journalist of noteas deputy andpolitical editor atThe Cape Argus formany years. Have you lost any liquor or not surewhere you misplaced it?
If so, perhaps the R12 000 worth ofbeer currently being stored at the Kuils Ri-ver police station, could be it.
The beer – 543 litres in total – was confis-cated recently from a house in the Vrygrondinformal settlement in Kalkfontein where itwas found abandoned, police say.
The search is now on for the owner, Cap-tain Isaac van Niekerk, police spokesper-son, says. The 210 SAB crates with 324 bot-tles of Black Label, 362 Castle Lager and 38Hansa Pilsners were found on 18 July at unitA57 in the informal settlement.
“We are looking for the owner of the unit. The premises where we found it is not usedas a shebeen, but rather a storage facilitywe suspect,” he added.
“We spoke to the people in the area, butno one can say to whom the alcohol belongsto.” Police hope that the owner of the unitwill be able to assist. At the moment the al-cohol is being stored at the police station forsafe-keeping.”V Anyone with info can call W/O Osman Griffithson 021 900 2819 or 082 522 0638

The Golden Gate area in Netreg is oneof the areas getting the gift of an up-graded Early Childhood Development
(ECD) centre.In linewith theCityofCapeTown’s strate-
gic objective to build safe, caring communi-ties R25,4 million has been set aside for theconstruction of these three facilities in Net-reg, Delft and Bridgetown. In this financial year, R10,5 million will
be spent on these three ECDs.A total of R4,6 million will go towards the
Netreg Golden Gate Early Childhood Devel-opment Centre, which is set for completionin October. This investment will bring much needed
social upliftment to the community of Net-reg in Bonteheuwel by giving children asafe and caring, educational environment.
The area of Netreg has many socio-eco-nomic challenges, and has for years experi-enced very little investment.
The construction of this centre will domuch to address the injustices of the pastand forms part of the City’s commitment toredress.
One of the greatest investments that canbe made is in the development and educa-tion of children from an early age.
That is why the City is committed to de-veloping ECD centres, as early childhooddevelopment provides a crucial foundationfor the overall development of children andthe improvement of social conditions.
OnTuesday 8 September executivemayorof Cape Town, Patricia de Lille, visited thefacility in Netreg where construction teamswere hard atwork to ensure the timely com-pletion of the project.“I joined them to help with some painting
as we put some of the finishing touches onthe centre, which we and the communitywill build into a centre of excellence.
“The Golden Gate ECD has been devel-oped in close partnership with the commu-nity and it will be a community-driven andmanaged centre,” she said. The City’s directorate for social and early
childhood development will be responsiblefor repairs and maintenance at the centre,
while the Netreg community forum will op-erate the facility. It will accommodate 60 to 80 children be-
tween the ages of one and five and will haveeight staff members. It will be equipped with toy libraries,
books, internet services, videos and othereducational material.
It will also provide training for other ECDpractitioners.
Three ECD upgrades for children
Executive mayor of Cape Town Patricia de Lille gets to grips with helping to paint in Netreg ablyassisted by Suzette Little (behind her), the City’s mayoral committee member for social develop-ment and early childhood development, and Raelene Arendse, chairperson of the social develop-ment and early childhood development portfolio committee.

Johannes Kriel, Russell vanWyk, Glenville“Bekkies” Faro and Franklyn Roberts. There was not enough evidence against
Kriel at the time and he was acquitted of allcharges, while Van Wyk, a minor at the ti-me, was sentenced to 23 years imprison-ment. Roberts and Faro were both senten-ced to double life sentences.

The love for living large off thesoil is growing in Bishop La-vis and surrounds.
Soil for Life celebrated theirhome gardeners in the area recent-ly, who spoke freely about their en-joyment of the activities in theirgardens.FranFredericks fromtheorgani-
sation, who heads the training pro-gramme, felt that more peopleshould be joining to benefit fromincreased activity in their garden, aswell as eating their own, organicvegetables for a healthier lifestyle.“Our ultimate goal is to have
Bishop Lavis and surrounding are-as as a lush green field withhealthy families,” she said.“We want to encourage others to
start their organic vegetable gar-dens and by doing that, have thebenefits of having a healthier lifes-tyle and becoming self sustaina-ble.” One of the enthusiastic gar-denerswas JaneBrookes, who con-fessed to not really beinginterested at first.“It was one of my friends who
eventually persuaded me to startattending the talks about garden-
ing in the community,” she said.“Eventually my interest in-
creased and I went to the course tostart a garden even though I knewit would have to be in containersbecause I don’t have the space.“Now I am always so excited
whenmy seeds start sprouting andI can eat what I have grown. Itgivesme a sense of pride – and I amhealthier.”Another gardener that has pride
of place in the organisation, is Hyl-ton Lindewall.
“Whenweneed to showsponsorsor supporters what can beachieved, we take them to Hylton,”says Fran.“He’s always willing to open his
doors to us for a visit and the pridethat he takes in his garden is an in-
spiration to many out there.”Hylton is humble about his
achievements, but immenselyproud of how much he has learnt.“I’ve always loved gardening
and this has just enhancedmy lovefor planting,” he says.“What we do, keeps us healthy
and grateful for what the soil cangive us. Sometimes I am worriedabout the birds in the garden, butthen I think that we must make aplan for them.“They were put on earth for us
so through our efforts in the gar-den we must also care for them.”Marguerite Loftus was part of a
group of dietetic students fromStellenbosch who were visiting, and she was amazed at the project.“This visit has been a special ex-
perience for all of us,” she said.“It’s been heartwarming to see
howa community can come togeth-er and do something to improvetheir health through something sosimple, yet so powerful.“We will be taking this experi-
ence in Bishop Lavis with us forthe rest of our lives as an exampleof what can be done in any situa-tion.”V For more information about Soil for Life,Fran can be contacted on 071 365 8828.

Bonteheuwel and the media world is inmourning for a major catalyst in itsrich legacy against apartheid, Joseph
“Joe” Aranes. For many he will be known for his role
as journalist but the inspiration for choos-ing this career was born out of his commit-ment to fight for freedom while a high-school learner on the streets of this suburb. On Saturday he was laid to rest from the
Catholic Church in Bonteheuwel, after dy-ing from a heart attack in his Lansdownehome on Thursday 3 September. This reporter got to know Joe better
when he started working at The Argus andsome of our exploits cannot be shared here– but there was always much fun and agreat time was always had by all.It was Joe who started the legendary Fri-
day afternoon “sundowners” inNewspaperHouse, which never closed its doors for any“visitors” or “friends”. I was lucky enoughto get his permission to buy refreshmentson the “bookie” when funds were low.Needless to say, the life of Joe Aranes is,
or should be, an inspiration andmotivationnot only to youth from this area, but toyouth in all are-as now affectedby so muchcrime, gang-sterism anddrug abuse. In the 1970s
and 80s theyouth took upthe fight forfreedom fromapartheid. Joe’slife should be aninspiration forthem to nowtakeup the fightagainst the for-ces that are destroying their lives in the“new” South Africa.Joe, 51, grew up in Bonteheuwel along
with a brother and six sisters, with hisyouth dedicated to fighting for freedom.Involved with student political activities
at high school, he left the country going tofamily in Germany for two years. When he eventually returned, it was in
Bonteheuwel that his activism saw himworking with organisations like the Bonte-heuwel Civic Association and the later es-tablishedBonteheuwel AdviceOfficewhilebeing part of MK in the area. When the United Democratic Front start-
ed, he became its provincial secretary inthe Western Cape. His activism always saw him under the
attention of the authorities and this sawhim in detention twice. When transition to post-1994 South Afri-
ca started, he started his journey into jour-nalism – starting at The Cape Argus as anintern in 1992, a stint at an independentnewspaper, and going back there in 1994eventually rising to rank of assistant newseditor, news editor and political editor in2003. In 2005 his alleged involvement in astill unresolved controversy surroundingthe ANC’s involvement in pay-offs to news-papers, led to first his removal as politicaleditor and eventual departure fromTheAr-gus, but it did not detract from the impor-tant role he played as a mentor. In recent times we may not have been in
touch that often, but at infrequentmeetingsI would be questioned about some of my re-cent writings, especially about new acts onthe music scene, and of course remind meof an “alleged” unpaid tab at the Argus’ssundowner sessions.Rest in peace, Joe, you have left a beauti-
ful legacy of inspiration and motivation toa new generation of journalists in your life-time. Joe is survived by his wife, Kathy, daughter, Thandi, and grandson, Raoul.

Ek sit alleen in my kantoor by diewerk, waar ekmy banksake opmy rekenaardoen.
bogenoemde wetsontwerp.“Daar is ’nmenigtemanierewaarop ’n ku-
Dit staan bekend as ‘phis-hing’,” sê Pieters.

Haar man is vermoor. Kort daarna is
gekry het, hierdie keer by Tygerberg-hos-pitaal. Intussen was syherhaaldelik in rehabilitasiesentrums.“’n Mens leer baie daar; ’n mens kry so-
veel tools.Maar as ’nmensditmaarnet kangebruik daarbuite.
Ek
was so te sê dood.”

A new, state-of-the-art radiation machinewas unveiled by management at TygerbergHospital on Thursday. At the cutting edge of technology and on
par with techniques used in Europe and theUSA, this machine will enable the hospitalto keep up with the ever increasing numberof cancer patients who flock here from sur-rounding communities and rural areas.TheElekta synergyagility linear accelera-
tor (Linac) was commissioned and installedin 2014.Laticia Pienaar, from the communication
directorate of the Western Cape health de-partment explains how this machine worksand why it was needed. “Successful radio-therapy depends on the ability of the Linacto deliver a dose of radiation to the tumour
while ensuringminimal radiation to normaltissue,” she said. The new Linac has an improved beam
shapingmechanismtermedamultileaf colli-mator that consists of 160 ‘leaves’ of 0,5cmthat can be shaped into almost any shape totarget the tumour, she added. “Previous col-limators could only shape the beam intosquares or rectangular fields. The improvedbeam shaping mechanism enables bettermatching the shape of the beam to the shapeof the tumour, which decreases radiation tonormal surrounding tissue,” she said, add-ing that this reduces the side effects normal-ly associated with radiation treatment. The new Linac also includes the latest hi-
tech treatment that involves the use ofVMAT (volumetric modulated arc therapy),which delivers the radiation dose to the pa-tient in a single moving arc from 0 to 360 de-grees.
“Older technology Linacs deliver the doseto the patient in a combination of separatebeams. This new VMAT technology vastlyreduces treatment time.”Although the implementation of the new
technique involves more preparation timeinput, actual treatment time is reduced to amatter of minutes.Pienaar said the new Linac has the capa-
bility of treating over 450 patients per yearand forms part of the complement of otherLinacs in the department where nearly 2 000patients are treated each year. “This in-cludes curative radiotherapy for cervix, prostate, gastrointestinal, brain and breastcancers. Paediatric cancer patients are alsotreated in the division with high quality ad-vanced radiation techniques,” she said.InMay this year Ian Alexander, executive
vice president of Elekta Europe, Africa, Lat-in America and Middle East, said the cur-
rent lack of treatment for cancer in Africancountries “is totally unacceptable”.“Most sub-Saharan countries lack the fa-
cilities and trained personnel to provide ef-fective prevention, early detection or ade-quate treatment of cancer,”he said inapressstatement. According to him, cancer global-lykillsmorepeople thanHIV/AIDS,malariaand tuberculosis combined. He said approximately 40 percent of can-
cer cases can be prevented and 40 percentcan be cured with the right treatment.“More than 50 percent of all cancer pa-
tients worldwide would benefit from radia-tion therapy during the course of their dis-ease, either as the sole therapy or in combi-nation with surgery and chemotherapy.Despite being home to 85 percent of theworld’s population, less than 35 percent ofthe world’s radiotherapy facilities are inlow-income countries,” he said.

A round of musical chairs has precededthe Toyota Cape Dealer Rally, penulti-mate event in the 2015 National Rally
Championship to be staged in Durbanvilleand Malmesbury on Friday and Saturday. With the leading teams in this year’s game
of thrones level-pegged after the previousround, early log leader Mark Cronje and theFord Performance Rally team announcedthat Cronje’s co-driver, the highly experi-enced and decorated Robin Houghton, willstep down for the remainder of the season.According to the release, Houghton’s deci-
sion was taken “in an effort to reduce theweight of car and crew tohelp improveMarkCronje’s fight for the championship”.It added that Houghton will still be in-
volved in the running of the team and will
work closely with Cronje’s new navigator, and thanked and applauded Houghton for“his dedication and selfless decision”.Meanwhile it has been confirmed that
Gerhard Snyman, long-time navigator forJapie van Niekerk, will now fill the hot seatnext to Cronje to take on arch-rivals LeeroyPoulter and Elvéne Coetzee (Castrol TeamToyota Yaris S2000) in the Toyota Cape Deal-er Rally.
CommitmentsWith Snyman on duty in the official Ford
Performance entry and Van Niekerk, due tobusiness commitments not making the tripto the Western Cape, rally stalwart and ex-champion Enzo Kuun from Somerset Westwill be taking his seat in the NAD Ford Fies-
ta, directed by Kes Naidoo, who normallynavigates for Wilro Dippenaar in the NRC4Class Northern City Panelbeaters ToyotaAuris. The Namibian has decided not to partici-
pate in the Cape event, leaving Naidoo freeto partner with Kuun, who won the SA na-tional rally championship in 2006 for Volks-wagen together with Guy Hodgson.Interestingly Hodgson will officiate as
competitor liaison officer on the Cape event. While the scoreboard may show Poulter
and Coetzee leading the championship with79 points after their victory in Tshwane – 7points clear of Cronje – they are in realityeven in terms of points as they must droptheir worst result – in Poulter’s case the Se-cundaMotorRally, and inCronje’s the Impe-
rial Toyota Tshwane rally result.Such is their dominance that with two
events remaining third-placed Giniel de Vil-liers from Stellenbosch and Carolyn Swan(Castrol Team Toyota Yaris) – on 48.5 points– is the only other team still in with amathe-matical chance (after dropping their worstresult) of winning the championship. The Dakar star is 7.5 points clear of the
consistent Gugu Zulu in his VolkswagenSasolracing Polo– the only contender be-sides Poulter/Coetzee to finish every rallyup to this point in the season –but with onlytwo events remaining Zulu’s best hope is tochallenge De Villiers for third place in thedriver’s championship.FromZulu there is a big points gap to team
mates Henk Lategan/Barry White (24points), while Thilo Himmel/Armand duToit (Volkswagen Sasolracing Polo) is sev-enth, two points ahead of teammate HergenFekken who did not participate in the firsttwo events of the year.

The cubs festival of the Rygate LocalFootball Association (LFA) is nodoubt an annual thriller and this ye-
ar’s theme, “celebrating diversity”,was in-spired by the spirit and scenes of the hun-dreds of soccer fans who were united du-ring the four-day event focusing on theyouth in communities.About 100 clubs from all over the Wes-
tern Cape participated at the Johnson Ro-ad sports complex in Rylands to competefor the various silverware. The age catego-ries u.6, u.8 and u.10 were introduced thisyear, after the event had catered for u.7sand u.9s the previous three years. The tournament, now in its fourth year,
fuses sport, fair play, culture and commu-nity service into a competition format thatinspires community youth to embrace theskills they have acquired through Score’ssport and development programmes.According toFaizel “Boeta”Samaai, pre-
sident of Rygate LFA, it is a tournamentfor children to come and enjoy, to have funand and take the opportunity to formfriendships and share experiences withother young people who are motivated bysocial change.“Secondly, the cubs event aims to increa-
se sportsmanship aswell as prevent discri-mination in the game of soccer.”
