The robberies have sparked concern among members of the Milnerton Rugby Neighbourhood Watch and Milnerton po- lice. According to watch chairperson Naz Gor- don, in the past two weeks there has been a spike in bridge robberies. He says mainly children crossing the bridge to go to a near- by school are targeted. He says the watch is aware of at least three cases where children walking alone over the bridge from Rugby to Milnerton were accosted by robbers. “In one case the child’s school bag was torn and this is all very scary. The issue of the bridge over the railway has been an on- going problem for years now because of the people living along the railway lines. We have reported the matter on several occa- sions but we are yet to see any change,” he says. According to the watch, in addition to the problems under the footbridge, the bridge at the Lagoon Beach MyCiTi station is also a concern. Here several makeshift dwellings have been erected and, according to the watch, serve as the perfect hideout spot for robbers. “In addition to children being targeted, women who cross the Boundary Road bridge to get to the Lagoon Beach MyCiTi station are being targeted. Several neighbours have reported being approached by men on the bridge and it is very scary what is happening around us. The problem is they run under that tunnel near the MyCiTi station and no- body can find them. Something needs to be done.” In an attempt to curb robberies, the watch has taken to patrolling the bridge each day when children are going to and coming home from school. Gordon says these patrols take place three times a day to ensure the safety of children. According to Milnerton police, the patrols are working. Speaking at a public meeting last week, Captain André Fourie raised his concerns, confirming children were at risk. “At the Boundary Road bridge, the neigh- bourhood watch has assisted us with logging complaints about the people living by the railway line. “Currently in the mornings and after- noons the Rugby neighbourhood watch is on the bridge as we have issues with children and people being robbed there. They are hav- ing a show of force in our crisis area. Follow- ing the patrols, there has been an immediate drop in incidents.” Gordon says more residents are needed to curb crime in Rugby. He says there are few patrollers who go out each day to keep watch and to report illegal activities. But as the suburb is hard hit by drug dealing, prostitu- tion and house break-ins, Gordon says this is not enough. “We have a variety of crimes which are bringing down the area. Prostitution is still one of the biggest concerns with sex workers doing their business in public and the next morning used condoms are found every- where. It’s disgusting and a risk to children and pets and we need more patrollers to keep our community safe.” Gordon says currently the watch covers the area west of Koeberg Road from Farn- worth Road to Kiln Road. “They are brazen and they will shootyou.”

This was the scary yet sound ad-vice given to neighbourhood watches inMilnerton last week.

Speaking during the monthly sector 4subforum meeting, Captain André Fouriecongratulated watches on their progress, but warned patrollers to be safe when tak-ing to the streets.

The monthly meeting focuses on crimetrends in Summer Greens, Century City, Ti-jerhof and Sanddrift among others.

Referring to three violent incidentswhich rocked Summer Greens a month agowhere the watch was called out to a hijack-ing, armed robbery of a store and anotherattempted hijacking in just one hour, Fou-rie explained it was important for watchesto stay safe at all times as their bibs don’tstop bullets.

‘They will shoot you!’He says following the concerns raised, he

hosted a meeting with the Summer GreensNeighbourhood Watch (SGNHW) where allincidents over the past six months were

mapped and crime patterns became appar-ent.

He highlighted the vulnerability of thehomes on the edge near to the N1 and N7highways.

“When you are doing your operations andthere are armed robbers, we need you to becareful. They are brazen; they don’t give adamn if you see their faces.

“They will shoot you.“Rather observe and report it. I ask the

watches to please be careful.”In his crime report, Fourie explained

while police sympathise with victims ofcrime, they can only react on crime report-ed at the station.

“Everyone wants to cry ‘we need policing’but they don’t report it, so we can’t do any-thing.”

Reporting on crimes with firearms, Fou-rie says there were cases in Century CityDrive at Pick n Pay at Sable Square.

He highlighted crimes affecting vehiclesin Bosmansdam and says the parking ofcars on fields is now creating a problem asmany have reported theft out of motor vehi-cle cases.

Fourie says break-ins at residential com-plexes in Century City have shocked police. He says when viewing camera footage, po-

lice were shocked to see criminals climbthrough the narrow gaps in the palisade fen-cing. He says the men and women from Ken-sington use a passage way during the earlyhours to break into homes and cars.

Tik makes them that thin“What shocked us was they came over the

railway line and they are so thin they gothrough the palisade fencing. We sat in thevideo room and I said: ‘Dear Lord’. I lookedat my leg and thought there was no way Iwould fit through there, but they do it.”

A man and woman were arrested for tres-passing in a residential complex. Fouriesays while the man was denied bail as hehad other outstanding cases, the womanwas let go.

“The next day they caught her again, be-cause she is trying to feed her drug habit.People, it’s because of the tik, it causes themto lose weight.”

Police also explained that Century Citysecurity will be looking at patrolling the pe-rimeter and assist in surrounding suburbslike Summer Greens.

In his address, subforum chairpersonLeslie Martch thanked watches for their ef-forts with some watches recording just over500 hours of patrolling.

Police issue warningabout brazen criminals

West Beach residents woke up to thesounds of gunfire last week following arobbery at the OK Mini Market.

According to a report from Table Viewpolice, on Wednesday 4 May shortly after07:00 Warrant Officer Johan Prins andWarrant Officer Willem Collinse were ata nearby petrol station when they wereapproached by the manager of the OKMini Market who was in shock, asking forhelp, because the store was being robbed.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Adri-ana Chandler says the scene unfoldedwhen a Chubb security officer stopped atthe store for coffee, shortly after the storeopened.

“Five armed men entered the store andtook the security officer’s pistol, hand ra-dio and car keys. During this time themanager managed to inform the two po-lice officers what was transpiring at his

shop. The officers immediately respondedand alerted Table View police.”

When the five suspects saw the policethey ran to the back of the store andjumped into a getaway vehicle parked be-hind the store.

Chandler says one of the suspects couldnot get into the vehicle fast enough andfell out of the moving vehicle a short dis-tance from the crime scene and started torun.

A resident informed the two officersthat she saw the man running, but unfor-tunately the information was not correct.

“Complex Patrol” was in the vicinityand spotted the suspect at the corners ofCabin and Warwick roads, West Beach. The suspect pointed a firearm at the secu-rity officer. It was later established thatthe firearm had been stolen from theChubb security officer at OK.

The Complex Patrol officer fired twoshots at the suspect after a warning wasnot complied with. One bullet hit the sus-pect in the upper arm. Table View policearrived at the scene shortly afterwardsand arrested the suspect. He receivedmedical attention from ambulance per-sonnel at the scene.”

Chandler further explains police weregiven the registration of the vehicle andan alert was sent to all neighbouring sta-tions.

Employees of store were provided sup-port by medical staff on the scene.

“Both crime scenes were cordoned offby police in order to preserve all evidence. We are now investigating a business rob-bery. Anyone with information is askedto contact the investigating officer, Ser-geant Winston Blake, on 021 521 3300 or theCrime Stop number on 08600 10111.”

Hunt for gunmen after robbery

Despite being highly educated andarmed with technical skills, many mil-lennials lack the soft skills to competein the workplace.

A survey by the Hay Group revealedthat 80 percent of employers are strug-gling to find graduates with the softskills they need.

Communication is the most in-de-mand soft skill in most industries, in-cluding engineering, finance, healthcare, information technology andsales. To help develop soft skills, mil-lennials and all prospective employ-ees are encouraged to focus on waysthey can build the skills they lack.

Murder and varioussuspects head to courtBreaking boundaries

MONIQUE DUVAL@monique_duval

Excitement is mounting in Brooklynas the local neighbourhood watchprepares to take back their entire

community.A battle to break the boundaries of the

Brooklyn Ysterplaat NeighbourhoodWatch (BYNHW) has been won followingnew negations with the Milnerton Com-munity Policing Forum (CPF).

Watch spokesperson Justin Kumlehnsays for many years the watch has onlybeen able to patrol the area from the N1to Justin Street. This is a direct result ofBrooklyn being split across the Maitlandand Milnerton police precincts.

“This meant that we were confined toone area and the problem was further ex-acerbated by the fact that the two stationswere part of different police clusters. Itmade keeping watch over Brooklyn veryconfusing and hard at times.”

AngerWith the Justin Street boundary came

confusion and sometimes anger. Duringneighbourhood watch meetings, manyresidents living on the “Milnerton side”of Brooklyn expressed their frustrationswith not being able to register with thewatch wile crime surged in the area be-tween Justin and Wemyss streets.

Kumlehn says on the “Maitland side”,the watch had successfully kept a closeeye on crime and a concerted effort wasmade to clean up their community. In ad-dition to reporting all suspicious activity, the watch also tackled the condition ofpublic spaces with the City of Cape Town.

This included illegal dumping, vagran-cy and gang tags.

In addition, in recent months, the watchhas been tackling prostitution along Koe-berg Road. With static patrols, watchmembers stand with their bibs at pick-uphotspots in an effort to deter customers.Kumlehn says the plan is to tackle crimeand grime simultaneously to make the ar-ea safer for all.

However, the initiatives of the watchhad some unintended consequences forthose living on the “Milnerton side”.

“It meant a lot of the crime was dis-

placed to the Milnerton side of Brooklyn, because we were never allowed to crossthe boundary. During the patrols on Koe-berg Road, focussed on prostitution, youwould see many of them move to JustinStreet and beyond to avoid us. Also crimi-nals took advantage of the boundary prob-lem by conducting their illegal activitieson the other side of the boundary, know-ing we had no jurisdiction.”

ApprovedLast week Kumlehn met with Milner-

ton CPF chairperson Lianne Lippert todiscuss registering a watch for Brooklynwith the CPF. Lippert explains after ana-lysing the relevant legislation, they foundnothing prevented them from registeringa new organisation.

“What it means is that there will be two

organisations on either side of the bound-ary with one body in charge. They haveregistered with the CPF and their applica-tion has been approved by Milnerton po-lice. This is a simple solution to a complexproblem and we know it’s been a big stum-bling block and the CPF is very excitedabout this new plan. We have offered tosupport them in any way we can. This isa very positive step going forward.”

The watch is also wasting no time in re-cruiting more members and on Saturdayhosted a recruitment drive. Kumlehnsays they are excited about the plans go-ing forward and call on all residents whobelieve Brooklyn can be better to step upand take back their neighbourhood.V If you would like to join the watch call JustinKumlehn on 081 732 7223 or email [email protected].

Table View police are on the hunt for fakepolice officers who robbed two friends inTable View.

According to a police report, two mendriving a white Polo introduced themselvesas police officers when they approached thecomplainant and friend in South Road, Ta-ble View, on Sunday evening.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant AdrianaChandler says the friends were walkingwhen they were stopped by the two fake po-

licemen.“One of the men instructed them to take

off their shoes, because he wanted to searchfor drugs. He said they were police officers. The men were wearing plain clothing.”

After taking off their shoes, the suspectsdid not want to return it. One of the victimstook out a cellphone to take a picture ofwhat was transpiring.

Chandler says the men threw the shoesback and demanded that the friends hand

their cellphones over to them. Once again, the complainant and friend complied.

“The suspects then sped away from thescene. The complainant managed to remem-ber parts of the number plate.”

The incident was reported to Table Viewpolice who are investigating a case of rob-bery.V Anyone with information about the suspects isasked to contact the Table View Police Station on021 521 3300 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Magic of quilting quite spectacular

Daphne de Jager made the quilt on the left as a memory of a holiday to the Middle East. Here she holds another one of her many quilts. PHOTO: ANDRÉ BAKKES

ANDRÉ BAKKES@andrebakkes

The magician presents an ordinarypiece of cloth.

“I will now transform it into a jawdropping piece of art,” she says.

She twirls her wand high above her headand intones the magic words: “You-don’t-just-swing-a-magic-wand-at-a-piece-of-cloth-and-then-you-have-a-quilt!”

Right there, where the cloth once laid, was now the exact same piece of cloth.

Daphne de Jager (61), a quilt maker ex-traordinaire from Panorama, doesn’t real-ly own a wand. She uses her needle andsewing machine. But the outcome is everybit as magical and mysterious as someonepulling a rabbit from a hat.

The quilter takes a variety of textiles andcolours and revolutionises it into anythingfrom a wall decoration or cushion cover toa blanket or a runner.

The end result is quite spectacular. The question remains: “Why does the

quilting bug bite so few young people ormen?”

“We try to encourage young people toquilt, but because needlework has beendropped from the school curriculum, chil-dren don’t develop interest in this. Thereare very few teenagers who can even sowon their own buttons,” explains Daphne.

“In the last three years the QuiltersGuild have made a very special effort withthe youth block challenge. Older quilterswill act as a mentor for a child aged be-tween six and 18 and then the children areencouraged to make a block quilt, which isjudged nationally.”

According to Daphne this judging proc-ess was actually completed this weekend.

As for the lack of men in quilting, Daph-ne proudly says that one of the managingmembers of the South African QuiltersGuild is in fact a man.

But this is clearly the exception to therule.

General assumptions that quilters areolder and tightly knit women are in manycases correct.

“What people don’t understand is howgratifying quilting can be,” says Daphne.

“For many women it’s a therapy; a crea-tive outlet. Women like cloth, such asclothes and fabric, so if you’ve done a bit

of embroidery or are just interested inworking with cloth, then quilting will ap-peal to you. And the camaraderie is some-thing to behold!”

This companionship among quilters wasborn along with the craft by American pio-neers.

Daphne finds the history of quilting fas-cinating, and much like her passion for hercraft which can clearly be seen in her work, her fervour towards history can be heardin her words.

“They were poor people and not muchwas available, so they took all the loose

cloth and sowed it together. It is always fas-cinating to read what women did to keepbusy and what kind of support groups theyformed for one another.

“In America there were quilting bees incommunities. If a young girl was going toget married, her mother and her friendswould come together and traditionallymake a block and put this all together byhand.”

Daphne speaks with the authority ofsomeone who’s been quilting all her life, soit’s surprising to hear that she’s only beenat it since 2002.

“I was always involved with crafts frommy teenager years. Then I went to BellvilleLibrary sometime in 2002 and saw thisbeautiful exhibition called CreativeThreads, which got me interested,” she re-members.

“I went for some classes and along withseven other women we opened a groupcalled the Stoep Quilters in 2002. We havesince grown to 30 members and meetmonthly here in the Dutch ReformedChurch hall.”

Panorama is also the convening point ofthe Quilters Guild, which meets once everyquarter.

The guild’s annual general meeting washeld on Saturday at Northlink College, andapparently drew quilters from as far asGeorge.

“The magic of quilting can only truly beunderstood once you have immersed your-self in its glory.”

It transcends cheap, mass-produceditems, eclipses therapy and transforms thequilter into a magician.

The rest can just look on in bewilder-ment.

Residents going online to search fortrue love are warned to be cautiousamong thousands of internet scams.

This is the warning of police in Melkbos-strand following the recent arrest of twoNi-gerian men who were found to be involvedin an international 419 romance scam.Police spokespersonConstableDebbieAl-

ard says themen aged 27 and 28were arrest-ed on Wednesday 23 March in Melkbos-strand when they were found with drugs intheir possession. She says during the arrestanundisclosedamount of dagga, moneyandlaptops were seized.Melkbosstrand detectives continued

their investigation and found the duo werepart of the international scam aimed at con-ning lonely women out of their hard earnedmoney. “The suspects are alleged to havedefrauded unsuspecting victims of copious

amounts of money. Victims usually fit theprofile of elderly and established women(often lonely) who are then beguiled into re-lationships with fictitious persons by pro-viding false digital images.”She says once the relationship starts to

“bloom” and the new found love is estab-lished, it is quickly followed up by a requestfor money.Alard says the scamsters make up some

excuse and claim they need the money ur-gently. They also promise to pay the moneyback with interest.“People especially need to be aware of

these scams and to protect themselves frombeing used like that. The men never payback the money and this can cause a lot ofemotional trauma. In these cases the menconned the victims out of thousands.”Following the investigation into these

scams, the men were rearrested and ap-peared in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Courton fraud charges.

Help forelderlyresidentsThe City of Cape Town’s Social Devel-

opment and Early Childhood Devel-opment Directorate has recruited and

trained nearly 400 people in this financialyear to participate in its home-based careprogramme.

According to a statement, the directoratestarted the initiative in 2014 as part of theVulnerable Groups Programme, to lend ahand to elderly residents in need of assist-ance around the home, but also compan-ionship.

The home-based caregivers programmeemploys workers through the City’s Ex-panded Public Works Programme (EPWP)who render social care services throughpsychosocial support, companionship, housekeeping and light household dutiesas well as referrals to other social services. The caregivers offer their services to sen-iors in their home environment and at old-age homes, clinics and hospitals.

In the first year, 2580 elderly residentssigned up for the programme.

Last year that number more than dou-bled to 5557. This year saw a high level ofinterest again, prompting the directorateto revise its target of 300 caregivers to 400.

All of the caregivers have completedtheir training and have started providingservices to clients.

Mayco member for social developmentand early childhood development, SuzetteLittle, says this speaks to the vulnerabilityof elderly residents – many of whom are nolonger able to do things for themselves, likecleaning the house or even their personalgrooming.

“I’m enthused that so many have takenadvantage of this opportunity. Not onlydoes it mean that little things are beingdone around the house for them, but it alsomeans a break from the loneliness thatmany experience – especially those livingon their own.”

The home-based caregivers are sourcedfrom the City’s job seeker database and, after their recruitment, the caregivers un-dergo various training sessions. They re-ceive in-depth training on the principles ofhome-based social care, etiquette and prop-er conduct in caring for an older person inthe home environment. They are alsotrained on how to identify older people inneed through community profiling and toprovide basic relief for family members ofolder people. Accredited first-aid training, communication and companionship as-pects are also addressed with the trainees.

The home-based caregivers have beentrained and appointed to offer the follow-ing services:

. Respite relief for family members andcaregivers of seniors,

. Companionship,

. Reading,

. Assistance in preparation of meals,

. Assistance with light cleaning andlaundry duties, and

. Referral of seniors requiring hands-oncare or medical care to the districts for fur-ther support.

“The caregivers deserve a special thankyou for rendering this service. Home-basedcare is not an easy task, especially as someseniors see outsiders as a threat to their in-dependence. In many cases the caregiversare also the ones who identify cases ofabuse and assist with interventions to helpstop this cycle,” Little says.

Residents who need assistance of ahome-based caregiver can contact the so-cial development department’s offices:

. The Tygerberg office is located at20 Voortrekker Road in the Bellpark build-ing. Call Elmerie Voorslag on 021 918 7224.

. The northern office is located at theScottsdene Housing Office, corner of La Bo-heme Road and Eoan Avenue. Call ShereeVisagie on 021 444 2719.

Dog attacks – how to protect yourself, child

Never approach unknown dogs

A dog may be a “man’s best friend” but doyou know how to reduce your chances of be-ing bitten by one?According to Samantha Walpole, the sec-

retary of Animal Behavioural Consultantsof SouthAfrica, children are themost at riskof being bitten by dogs and should be educat-ed about how to act around and take care oftheir dogs.“Children are generally drawn to dogs.

Wagging tails are attractive to children. Un-fortunately, the public is ill informed that ifa dog’s tail iswagging, itmeans that it is hap-py and is safe to approach. This is far fromthe truth. Children are also taught that hug-ging and kissing is an acceptable form of af-fection. Itmightbe tohumans, but to caninesthis is perceived as confrontational.“Fundamentally, humans and dogs speak

a different language. When communicationis misunderstood, people get bitten,” saysWalpole, who is also a dog behaviourist andtrainer.Dogs could also turn on their owners as

a result of a number of reasons.Walpole says dogs that bite their owners,

or anyone else, could have an underlyingmedical condition. The dog could also bepushed to a point where it has no choice orcould feel that its life is being threatened.Harsh and confrontational training meth-ods could also be a contributing factor withregards to human related dog aggression.Walpole says that people should purchase

dogs from reputable breeders to minimisethe risk of being bitten.“If you want to purchase a puppy, do your

homework to match the right breed withyour lifestyle. Join a reputable positive rein-forcement socialisation school. Thereshould be continued training to build a goodbond between you and your dog. You shouldseek assistance immediately if there are anyearly signs that make you uncomfortable,”said Walpole. She provides the following tips and urges

parents to educate their children.“Be respectful to your dog. Research and

learnhow to ‘speakdog’. There are anumberof body signals that adogdisplays to indicatethat it is uncomfortable and needs space or

that it likeswhat you are doing. Bywatchingyour dog’s body language and understand-ing what your dog is saying, you are able tostop or change the reason for your dog feel-ing uncomfortable.“Learn what your dog likes and dislikes

and respect these needs. A dog should not betreated like a toy or tested to see how toler-ant it is. Do not poke, push or sit on a dogor pull its tail. Stop what you are doing ifa dog shows discomfort. Signs of discomfortinclude when the dog turns its head awayfrom you, when the dog yawns, flicks histongue out of his mouth or licks his nose, when the dog’s body freezes, when it movesaway, lifts its lips or growls. Also stop whatyou are doingwhen the dog showswhale-eye(pronounced whites of the eye). This is oftenmisunderstood as a ‘guilty look’ when it is

actually an appeasement gesture in re-sponse to the stimulus.”“Never corner a dog and do not reprimand

a dog when it growls. This is a language pri-or to a bite. Growling means that a personshould leave the dog alone. If your dog bitessomeone, do not place the dog in a similarsituation. If necessary, temporarily confinethe dog in a safe area with water and shelterand immediately seek the assistance of aqualified trained and professional animalbehaviourist.”Walpole says an unfamiliar dog should be

ignored.“Do not encourage an unfamiliar dog to

approach you. Quietly and calmly walkaway. Do not turn your back on the dog butrather try tohave your body facing sidewaystoward the dog,” says Walpole.

If the dog approaches to attack you, do notscream, run away or turn your back on thedog. Do not make eye contact as this is oftenperceived as confrontational.“Keep your hands close to your body and

stand still until the dog has backed away oris preferably out of sight. If you have foodon you, break it up into small pieces and un-derarm toss the food toward the dog’s head.If thedogeats, continue to toss the foodwhileslowly backing away to a safe place,” saysWalpole. You can also place something such as a

chair or backpack if available between youand the dog.“If you are unable to escape an attacking

dog, place yourself in a foetal position withyourhead tucked towardyour chest and cov-er your head with your hands.”ER24’s Dr Kumeshan Moodley, who has

treated numerous people for dog bites, saysthat anyone bitten, even if minor injuries, should visit a medical practitioner. He says that one of the main reasons for

this is the possibility of developing infec-tions or rabies. Rabies, a viral and almostalways fatal disease, is mainly transmittedby the bite of an infected animal. The virus exists in the saliva of a rabid an-

imal such as a dog.People who develop rabies could experi-

ence anything from headache, fever, vomit-ing, muscle pain, difficulty swallowing, anx-iety, profuse salivation, paralysis, restless-ness, fear of water and seizures.DrMoodley says that apersonwill notnec-

essarily develop symptoms immediately. Itis possible to only experience symptoms lat-er in life. There is no effective treatment for people

or animals once they develop rabies symp-toms. Hence it is important to seek medicalattention immediately after being bitten.“Treatment of bites depends on the severi-

ty of the injury as well as whether the dogwas a stray, a pet that was immunised or notimmunised. Where it is unknown if the dogwas immunised, as a precaution, the patientwould be treated based on assumption thatthe dog was not immunised,” said Dr Mood-ley.

do not know each other. We have seen as-saults rise and we are planning someawareness programmes for this.”Commenting on general crime trends,

Rossouw says police are fearful of whatcould happen under the cover of darkness. He refers to the absence of street lights inthe IDA and says police are concernedabout how vulnerable Wolwerivier resi-dents are to crime.InMarch,TygerBurger reported on plans

to curb crime through the creation of streetcommittees. During interviews residentsexplainedbefore relocating toWolwerivier, those who lived in Skandaalkamp say theyhad informal street committees who wouldkeep watch at night. Since relocating, theactivities of these committees have dwin-dled as residents are occupied with tryingto find work and transport. They claimeddue to theabsenceof street lights, criminalscreep in the dark looking for an opportuni-ty to steal valuables. This was confirmed by police who said

house break-in and theft cases had in-creased. Rossouw showed TygerBurgerhow several residents had started to erectbarbed wire to safeguard their properties.“We will have to step up the patrols and

due tootherarrests in the lastweek fordrugpossessionwe are putting pressure on drugoutlets. In addition to drugs, we will be fo-cussing on liquor outlets and try to keep thecommunity safe, especially at night.”

Three days ofpaternityleave a joke!I’ve had bags under my eyes for so longthat I named them. It’s no coincidence that they’re named

after my two toddlers – Joshua andAmélie.I’m writing this from the perspective of

a very involved and very tired fatherwho gets just as little sleep as his wife. This weekend I went to a well-known

shopping centre in the northern suburbswith my kids and were met by a veryadamant and somewhat sarcastic securityguard. While I was unloading screaming child

number one, the guard marched towardsme and indicated that I was not allowedto park there. He furiously pointedtowards the sign reading “Moms & Tots”.The guard reasoned that I was clearly

not a mom, despite the exaggerated bagsunder my eyes hanging so low that Ineeded a bra.I refused to move the car and flatly

ignored the man.Yet, he had a point!I’m not a mom. Sowhy on earth arethere no “Dads &Tots” parkingspaces?Little did I know

my day was aboutto go from bad toworse.Screaming child

number two had adirty nappy andmuch to mydismay I discov-ered that the baby

changing area was located in the wom-en’s rest rooms. These two issues are more than just a

personal gripe. It affects every single dad, and even

more so every single single dad!As if us poor souls don’t have enough

on our plates already. It’s quite clearly a case of gross sexual

discrimination and tests a tired father’snerves to the extreme.Someone with more energy needs to do

something about it.And don’t get me started on the differ-

ence between maternity and paternityleave in South Africa!A mother needs time to heal physically

and emotionally. In most cases she needsto breastfeed every three hours, so theyobviously need to spend a long time athome after giving birth.A father’s role during this time is

nothing to scoff at, especially if he mustget up to go to work in the morning.Three days of paternity leave is a joke.

I live in Milnerton Ridge and Iam so upset by what hashappened to Maureen and herbeautiful dog. My daughterknows Maureen and she hastaken Zanzi to the SPCA to befixed and for her injections!Once a month we brought herhome to wash her. Althoughshe might seem thin, she isvery attached to Maureen andher street life. We often seeMaureen playing tug of warwith Zanzi and it was clear tosee the bond these two have. Iam so upset that someone canjust take Maureen’s dog! Theyhave ruined two lives. Zanziwill not adapt to being part of afamily as Maureen is herfamily! Please, if anyone is ableto get Zanzi back... please, please, please help. This is notfair and someone needs to standup for Maureen’s rights.

Zanzi not just ahomeless dog

Re. “Dog owners bite back”(TB 4 May). The animal wasnot stolen, the good Samaritandid the poor animal a once ina life time good deed by takingit to a vet/shelter. As Milner-ton Ridge residents we haveseen this dog with the home-less couple on many occasions. The dog was by no means in ahealthy, happy condition. Itwas painfully thin and ap-peared nervous and scaredwith it’s tail tucked in. It wastied with a rope to a tree andappeared to be a very misera-ble creature. Homeless peoplecannot provide any animalwith adequate shelter, care orfood and should not be allowedto string an innocent animalalong. clearly see and hear howtraumatised they are by the lossof Zanzi, and they have proventhis by going to great lengths ingetting her returned, with thehelp of the community.I am 100% sure that Zanzi is

day she was dropped off. WhenI arrived she was so afraid thatshe was hiding behind a ladder. For the first time in all the

years of meeting ill-treated dogsI sat down in front of thisfragile dog and just broke downin tears. After 15 min of mejust sitting there in sadness shecrawled out from behind theladder and laid her head on myknees – as if to say “Thank you… I know it was not you…”She was given a name – Fay

– because for the life of me Idon’t believe she wants to becalled Zanzi. She was skin andbone and petrified. I havewatched her change from a dogthat was starving and petrifiedto a dog that has a consistentsmile, getting everything shehas deserved all her life.

In fact, the 17-year-old has already enjoyedchart success with her debut album. WhenSpirit Breakout was released last year, itwent to number three on the South AfricaniTunes chart and placed at number 34 ontheir international chart in a matter of 24hours.Now, just a few months later, Julanie is

already cooking up something new.Until recently, she’s been performing

what she describes as “Christian contempo-rarymusic”, but this year she’smade the de-cision to move into the secular market.“I feel like it’s a bigger platform, and this

za and more recently she’s been workingwith Helmut Meijer on his new project Cal-ev. Her writing collaborations have mostlybeen a result of the response to her debut al-bum. “They liked the music and the soundof the album.” Others came after her per-formances on television shows like SABC3’sExpresso.While Julanie calls Spirit Breakout a “typ-

ical worship album with a bit of pop”, she’splanning something a little more edgy whenshe goes back into studio this time round.“Itwill haveakindof Jessie J andBeyoncé

tenable music” with the help of sound engi-neer Duane Brown who is also the man be-hind Elvis Blue’s live sound, Winston Sil-jeur on keys and JP Crouch on drums, among others. She’ll also play some of the songs off Fear-

less Heart for the first time and says: “It’s adeep show, but on a fun level.”“It’s songs about love and people; strug-

gles they have and struggles I have.”When she returns fromGrahamstown, Ju-

The Southern African Foun-dation for the Conservationof Coastal Birds (Sanccob)

has successfully hatched andhand-reared the first Africanblack oystercatcher (Haemato-pus moquini) at its seabird cen-tre in Cape Town.Established in 1968, the non-

profit organisation is wellknown for its work with endan-gered African penguins and hasbeen successfully hatching Afri-can penguin and other seabirdeggs for more than five years. However, the recent addition

of a specialised Chick RearingUnit is a first for the organisa-tion.Rescued from an iron ore ter-

minal on theWest Coast, the oys-tercatcher egg was admitted toSanccob’s Chick Rearing Unitand placed in a specialised incu-bator.After 15 days of incubation, the

egg successfully hatched on Val-entine’s Day, with the chickweighing in at a healthy 42grams. As with other new hatch-lings, a big concern for the Sanc-cob staff was to prevent the littlechick from imprinting on hu-mans and consequently not be-ing able to be released back intothe wild. They also wanted to give the

new hatchling a suitable com-panion. As a solution, the team

disguised one of its Bank Cormo-rant fluffy toys from its curioshop to mimic an adult oyster-catcher using red veterinarywrap.According to Sanccob rehabili-

tation manager, Nicky Stander, disguising the fluffy toy workedextremely well and they wereable to use it to demonstrate tothe chick how to feed.“Hewas a very fast learner and

had no trouble feeding or drink-ingwaterwith thehelp of his sur-rogate mom.”The chick’s regular food con-

sists of redbait, limpets andmus-sels,whichmimics its natural di-et. It was also given closed-shellmussels to encourage it to prac-tice prying them open – as itwould do in the wild.At first it struggled, but now

manages this feeding practicewell. At just under one monthold, the oystercatcher is sprout-ing its first juvenile feathers andwill soon be ready to take its firstflight. The team anticipates its re-

lease in thenext fewweekson theWest Coast outside Cape Town.TheAfrican black oystercatch-

ermay be found off themainlandcoasts and islands of SouthernAfrica. Their diets consist most-ly of mollusks, such as musselsand limpets, but have also beenobserved eating fish and insects. They use their strong bill to pryopen mussel shells and loosenlimpets off the rocks. The species is listed as near

threatened by the IUCN Red Listof Endangered Species, andwith only 6000 breeding pairs re-maining in the wild, these birdshold a significant conservationvalue. As a non-profit organisation,

Sanccob seeks the assistance ofthe public to continue rehabili-tating the African black oyster-catcher and the many other sea-birds in its care currently.

First oystercatcherhatches at Sanccob

Sanccob has successfully hatchedand hand-reared the first Africanblack oystercatcher at its seabirdcentre.

Local wins international surfing pro

Tanika Hoffman from Hout Bay on her way to clinching the women’s title at the Cape Town Proat Big Bay on Sunday. PHOTO: WSL / VAN GYSEN

Hout Bay local Tanika Hoffman andJoaquin Del Castillo from Peruclinched the women’s andmen’s titles

respectively in the inauguralCapeTownPropresented by Quiksilver at Big Bay, on Sun-day.The first World Surf League (WSL) Quali-

fying Series QS1 000 rated events held inCape Town for six years for men and since1992 for women, the Cape Town Pro present-ed competitors with the opportunity to earnpoints on both the QS and WSL Africa re-gional rankings, along with prize purses ofR30 000 for men and R20 000 for women.Hoffman emerged triumphant in the see-

saw women’s final in which she and FayeZoetmulder (Port Elizabeth) both deliveredscores in the excellent range, taking the leadwith an 8.83 that left Zoetmulder needing an8.60 for victory.“To be a winner in my home town is just

great! I haven’t won an event in so long andto win a WSL event and earn some pointshere is really an honour and so exciting,”said Hoffman. “It was a very well surfed fi-nal. Faye had a couple of really good waveswhile I played the patience game. Then Ifound a great little runner that let me do acouple of turns and gave me an eight, andFaye didn’t find another good wave.”Zoetmulder, who – like Hoffman – has

competed extensively on theQS circuit over-seas, was proud of the standard of women’ssurfing at an event in home surf.“It was a really good finalwith Tanika. We

threw some good scores down. The waveswere pretty tricky and it was challenging sofor both be getting scores in the excellentrange was really good,” said Zoetmulder. “Iused to surf the QS overseas and to have twoevents at home now and not have to travelis amazing. The girls are all competing, weare getting more entries and I’m stoked forthe all the sponsors to be getting involved.”

Hoffman pocketed R8 000 and 1000 pointsfor her victory with Zoetmulder collectingR4000 and 750 points. Nikita Robb (East Lon-don) andTarrynChudleigh (Kommetjie) fin-ishedequal thirdafter losing toHoffmanandZoetmulder in their respective semi-finalencounters.Del Castillo led the high scoring final

against Dylan Lightfoot (Jeffrey’s Bay) fromthe outset, weaving his way through thetricky one-metre high tide waves and finish-ing his rides with flair on the sand. The 20-year-old from Punta Hermosa, just south ofLima, posted rides of 7.33 and an excellent8.67 which Lightfoot could not match, de-spite earning a pair of sevens.“I’m so happy! I’ve come a long way from

Peru on my own and I really focused on thiscompetition. This win is for my family, formy country and for Punta Hermosa whereI live,” said an ecstatic Del Castillo, whowaschaired from the edge of the water to the po-dium by a pair of local surfers in a heart-warming display of sportsmanship.“Thanks Cape Town, thanks South Africa;I’m really, really happy. Thank you.”The victory earned Castillo R12 000 and

1000 points that will see him jump nearly 100positions up the QS rankings from his rank-ing of 167th coming into the event.Lightfoot, ranked 96th before the Cape

Town Pro, was satisfied with his runner-upfinish and the 750 points that will see himrise nearly 40 places on the leader board, butwas frustrated at coming so close to a firstQS win.“I was just out of rhythm with the waves

in the final. Joaquin got that eight whichwas a turning point in the heat and he wasinmuchbetter rhythm,” saidLightfoot. “I’msatisfied with second place in a QS event –it’s a major jump on the rankings for me.V Full results of the Cape Town Pro can be foundat WorldSurfLeague.com.

NEW RECORD: YOUNG NIPPER BRAVES ICY WATERS

Swimmer makes waves

Enya showed true grit as she endured the icy ocean water during her record attempt.

STEHAN SCHOEMAN

At the tender age of twelve Enyavan Niekerk etched her name inhistory onThursday 7April as the

youngest female swimmer ever to swimfromRobben Island to Blouberg Strand. What makes this

feat even more re-markable is the factthat she braved the icycold water without awetsuit.Enya’s attempt is

recognised by CapeLong Distance SwimAssociation (CLDSA).The Table View Pri-

mary School learnercompleted the 7.5kmdistance in a time ofthree hours and 14minutes.“I trained five

months for this swim-ming in the oceanwith the water beingbetween 13 and 15 de-grees,” she says.“Somedayswere tougher thanothers,

but in the end itwas allworth it. Besidesthe cold water, I also had to dodge hun-dreds of jellyfish which required focus

to navigate it safely to the end.“BrendanHiscockwho swamwithme

encouraged me and helped a lot. Thefirst half was pretty easy, but soon afterthat the tide turned against us and ittook a lot of mental toughness to com-plete the distance. I kept imagining I

was in a hot tub,”laughed Enya. Her father, Leon,

took her to Big Bayevery day for her tocomplete her 2kmswim. The goal was todo 10km every week.“I am a very proud

dad. Enya showed tre-mendous courage anda fighting spirit forfive months. In theend all the sacrificeswere worth it. It wassomething she want-ed to do and now shecan tick the box,” saidLeon.Enya is a member

of the Nippers BigBay Lifesaving Club. “I enjoy spendingtime in the sea and I will definitely dothe swim again in the future; let’s justhope the sea will be calm and make ita little bit easier,” chuckled Enya.

Saturday’s Killarney combination of thesecond round of the nationalMoPar 3-HourAfrican Endurance Series and the third legof the Power Series sponsored byWingfieldMotors and radio partnerKFMRadio, is go-ing to offer spectators almost 10 hours ofmagnificent motorsport.Andwith events for cars andmotorcycles

and entries that include an exciting selec-tion of exotic machinery, there should besomething for everyone.TheMutluBatteriesClassicCars provide

an excellent example. Because in additionto former champion Keith Andrews in anAlfa GTA, Dave Kopke’s magic Mazda R100and Richard Quixley’s Datsun 240Z, theLangebaan Mouton brothers have entereda 6.3-litre Chev de Ville V8 for Erik and aseldom seen Studebaker Silver Hawk with5.8 litres of Chev V8 power, for Jacques.Interesting cars in the Crossley & Webb

Sports and GT events include former title-holder Peter Little whose rotary enginedLotus 7 is said to be the quickest 7 inAfrica, while Mike Beachy Head will be at thewheel of a Porsche 917 replica. However they are hardly likely to bother

drivers like the meteoric Dawie Joubert(Lotus Exige), or Francis Carruthers (JunoSS3), at the head of the field. The bigV8Masters promises to be a close

onewithmultiple former championMarcelAngel and Fabio Tafani, the winner of themost recent round, both having to comefrom behind after missing an earlier event,British driver Stephen Young may be hardpressed to retain his championship lead. His task is not going to be made any eas-

ier by the presence of hard driving formerdouble South African rally champion EnzoKuun, who is duemake hismain circuit de-but on Saturday.

TheMidas Clubman shootout promises tobe another close one as Danie van Niekerk(BMW 325), takes on Alex Johnson (AudiQuattro), Clint Rennard (VW Golf) andstock car ace Jesse Huggett (VW Jetta).Other races on the Power Series pro-

gramme are going to feature Kent HomesFine Cars, the Bold Marine GTi Challengeand Formula Libre single seaters. The 3-Hour field is then due to be sent

away at 17:30 with a finish under lights inthe dark. This event has drawn a star studded entry

from all corners of the country.
