Hy sê as buurtwag is hul handeafgekap – mits meer mense bybuurtwagte aansluit en gesament-lik die probleem begin pak, saldaar nie veel aan die situasie ge-doen kan word nie.“Ons probeer ons buurt skoon-

hou, maar ons kan nie die menseverjaag nie. Hulle het ’n reg omhier te wees.”Hy sê meer betrokkenheid deur

inwoners en samewerking met diepolisie en wetstoepassing is dalkdie oplossing.

Volgens Seifert is sommige vandie haweloses deel van misdaad-kringe wat die woonbuurte teister.“Party haweloses is bekend aan

ons, maar ander nie en dis hullewat die oorlas veroorsaak.“Ongelukkig weet jy mos nie of

die oukwaadwillig is of nie.Omdiérede wil ons die mense uit die dorpkry en daarvoor het ons die polisieen wetstoepassers se hulp nodig.“Ons doen dit om ons buurt vei-

lig te hou en te beskerm,” sê Sei-fert.

Highbury residents can prepare them-selves to welcome a new group ofneighbours once construction of a

planned housing development in the area iscompleted – at least more than 524 newneighbouring families.A total of 365 subsidised housing and 159

affordable apartments are being plannedfor the vacant piece of land next to the Stel-lenboschArterial andNewNooiensfontein,the Western Cape’s department of humansettlements said recently.Uncertainty about theprovincial housing

project on the piece of land – formerly usedfor agricultural purposes – came to light ata community meeting held recently.However, when the news about the devel-

opment was explained, several residents ofHighbury and Highbury Park highlightedtheir disapproval.Most of the men and women at the meet-

ing, organised by the Highbury Founda-tion, wanted to know how the planned de-velopment would affect the value of theirproperties.Others raised fears about low-cost

housing attracting criminal activity whilesome complained about the new residentsadding to the already existing dense trafficvolume.Some residents indicated they will pro-

test against what forms part of the High-bury Phase 3 project.To date the vacant land has already un-

dergone rezoning, it has been subdividedand street names have been allocated.Most residents complained about the lack

of public participation.

This week Zalisile Mbali, spokespersonfor human settlements minister Bonginko-si Madikizela, confirmed that due processhad been followed.“In Highbury’s case the application was

advertised in the press and registered let-ters were sent to the abutting land owners.“We had site notice placement as well as

the actual advertisement placed (on site),”he said.According to him the first approval for

the Highbury Phase 3 project was granted

on 27 March 2012. An amended approvalwas granted on 13 February 2014.Concerns regarding parts of the area be-

ing a wetland were also brought up at thecommunity meeting.“A flood line report was compiled for the

KuilsRiver and clearly showedwhichareaswould not be suitable for development. Nowetlands were however identified on theHighbury site,” Mbali said in response.The development will be undertaken by

Power Construction.

The City of Cape Town’s Social Devel-opment and Early Childhood Devel-opmentDirectoratehas recruitedand

trained nearly 400 people in this financialyear to participate in its home-based careprogramme.According to a statement, the director-

ate started the initiative in 2014 as part ofthe Vulnerable Groups Programme, tolend a hand to elderly residents in need ofassistance around the home, but also com-panionship.The home-based caregivers programme

employs workers through the City’s Ex-panded Public Works Programme (EPWP)who render social care services throughpsychosocial support, companionship,housekeeping and light household dutiesaswell as referrals to other social services.The caregivers offer their services to

seniors in their home environment and atold-age homes, clinics and hospitals.In the first year, 2580 elderly residents

signed up for the programme.Last year that number more than dou-

bled to 5557. This year saw a high level ofinterest again, prompting the directorateto revise its target of 300 caregivers to 400.All of the caregivers have completed

from the City’s job seeker database and,after their recruitment, the caregivers un-dergo various training sessions.They receive in-depth training on the

principles of home-based social care, eti-quette and proper conduct in caring for anolder person in the home environment.They are also trained on how to identify

older people in need through communityprofiling and to provide basic relief forfamily members of older people.Accredited first-aid training, communi-

cation and companionship aspects are alsoaddressed with the trainees.The home-based caregivers have been

trained and appointed to offer the follow-ing services:

Thanks to a collaboration between in-formal traders in Kuils River and theCity of Cape Town, a more conducive

environment for trading is now being creat-ed.

A meeting was held recently between theCity’s department of economic develop-ment and informal traders from Kuils Riv-er and surrounding areas where ideas wereexchanged and ways and possibilities ofhow trade can be enhanced were discussed.

The recent round-table discussion led touseful suggestions being offered from trad-ers, the City says.

The objective of these discussions is toaddress the frequently asked questions,share information and to create a platformfor informal traders to raise area specificconcerns, the City says.

A total of 52 informal traders from KuilsRiver, Eerste River, Blue Downs, Black-heath, Happy Valley and the Wesbankcatchment area attended the recent round-table discussion. The discussions were in-teractive and centred on cleansing, health,

law enforcement and economic develop-ment. The traders raised concerns aboutcrime and grime in the area and offered sug-gestions on how the public space could beenhanced, the City says.

“When we look at the bigger picture andat the economy in its entirety, the informalsector is a source of employment for 161 000individuals or 11.3% of the total workforcein Cape Town,” says Garreth Bloor, Maycomember for tourism, events and economicdevelopment.

“These round-table sessions were aboutfinding workable solutions to concernsraised and are being well received and ap-preciated by the traders. We will continueto work with the traders to look at how tocreate a more conducive environment forinformal trading.”

About nine of the traders came armedwith their goods and wares, and set up at-tractive exhibits showcasing what they hadto offer.

Nine more meetings are scheduled totake place by the end of June this year.

’n vooraanstaande kollege.Riaan se lewe was op ’n ver-

woestingspad nadat hy op sy pase lyk afgekomhet nadat hy self-dood gepleeg het.In dié beproewende tyd het hy

dwelms begin gebruik en in diepsigiatriese eenheid van die Ty-gerberg-hospitaal beland.Die depressiewe jongmanwas

vir twee jaar uit die skool – tenspyte van die suksesvolle psigia-triese hulp wat hy ontvang het,was sy toekoms maar donker.

Abet­programDie personeel by die skool het

hom op vlak vier van die Abet-program gesit, wat gelykstaan-de is aan graad 9 op skool.Hulle het alles vir Riaan gedoen om hom

uit die put van ellende te trek.Daarwas nie altyd geld vir homomskool

toe te kom nie, maar die personeel het gelduit hul eie sakke bymekaar geskraap omhom die beste toekoms moontlik te bied.Hy het uiteindelik sewe onderskeidings

behaal en studeer nou om ’n dieselmegani-kus te word.Nie alle stories is egter so positief soos

Riaan s’n nie, sê SusanPotgieter, die skool-hoof.Die skool is daar vir kinders wat vir ’n

lang tydperk in die hospitaal behandel

moet word en dan daarna weer terug moetgaan na ’n gewone skool.Die kinders is baie keer uiters siek,maar

die skoolpersoneel laat hul nie onderkrynie. Hulle speel ’n kardinale rol in die kindse lewe.“Ons probeer hard omnie daai diep emo-

sionele verbintenis met kinders te maaknie. Ons werk nie vir die hospitaal nie, sobaie min inligting oor die kind se diagnoseis tot ons beskikking. Dit is eintlik goed so,want hoeminder jyweet, hoeminderweer-baar is jy.“Dis baie hartseer. Baie keer kan jy sien

die kind gaan agteruit, maar dan kom jy

terug werk toe en die kind is weer daar.Dan is daar die ander wat jy dink reg is enmôre is die kind dan nie meer daar nie,”sê Potgieter.Die personeel druk egter deur die swaar

taalterrein, so die kinderswordnie ver van hul beddens ge-neem nie.“Die kinders wat maande in

Volgens Ngobese is daar tydens ’n asses-sering bevind dat net 4% van die inwonerseintlik persone is wat ’n nood het aan ’nskuiling weens mishandeling.

Die res van die mense het ’n nood aan be-huising, het hy gesê.

Die departement het reeds met anderstaatsagentskappe in verbinding getree omoplossings te probeer vind.

“Ons eerste prioriteit is om om te sienna die kwesbares wat ’n behoefte het aan’n skuiling,” het Ngobese gesê.

shopping centre in the northern suburbswith my kids and were met by a veryadamant and somewhat sarcastic securityguard.While I was unloading screaming child

number one, the guard marched towardsme and indicated that I was not allowedto park there. He furiously pointedtowards the sign reading “Moms & Tots”.The guard reasoned that I was clearly

not a mom, despite the exaggerated bagsunder my eyes hanging so low that Ineeded a bra.I refused to move the car and flatly

ignored the man.Yet, he had a point!I’m not a mom. Sowhy on earth arethere no “Dads &Tots” parkingspaces?Little did I know

my day was aboutto go from bad toworse.Screaming child

number two had adirty nappy andmuch to mydismay I discov-ered that the baby

changing area was located in the wom-en’s rest rooms.These two issues are more than just a

personal gripe.It affects every single dad, and even

more so every single single dad!As if us poor souls don’t have enough

on our plates already.It’s quite clearly a case of gross sexual

discrimination and tests a tired father’snerves to the extreme.Someone with more energy needs to do

something about it.And don’t get me started on the differ-

ence between maternity and paternityleave in South Africa!A mother needs time to heal physically

and emotionally. In most cases she needsto breastfeed every three hours, so theyobviously need to spend a long time athome after giving birth.A father’s role during this time is

nothing to scoff at, especially if he mustget up to go to work in the morning.Three days of paternity leave is a joke.

I tried toremain calm and exited thepremises to throw him off (myson was not out of the shop yet)but he was still in pursuit ofus.At the robot, I made another

the shop and screamed for myson, who had exited the shop bynow and thankfully stood onthe side. She may look like your average teenag-er, but Stellenberg songbird Julanie Jis anything but.

In fact, the 17-year-old has already enjoyedchart success with her debut album. WhenSpirit Breakout was released last year, itwent to number three on the South AfricaniTunes chart and placed atnumber 34 on their interna-tional chart in just 24 hours.Now, just a few months lat-er, Julanie is already cookingup something new. Until re-cently, she’s been performingwhat she describes as “Chris-tian contemporary music”,but this year she’smade thede-cision tomove into the secularmarket. “I feel it’s a biggerplatform, and this is what Ilove,” she explains, referringto the new “RnB and pop”songs she’s been working on.Julanie has been writingsongs since shewas a child andbesides the 12 original tracks on SpiritBreakoutand thenewsongs she’swriting forher upcoming Fearless Heart, to be releasedin 2017, she’s also been penning hits for localand international artists.One of these is Congolese star Lokua Kan-za and more recently she’s been workingwith Helmut Meijer on his new project, Cal-ev. When seven-year-old Tyrone Siljeur fromBonteheuwel got a crayon stuck in his earearlier this month, his parents went into abit of a panic, but help was at hand.They took him to a private doctor, but a

small piece remained lodged in his ear andhe was referred to the Red Cross Children’sHospital. Thanks to some generous sponsor-ship from Woolworths and MySchool, Ty-rone will underwent a small procedure un-der anaesthetic to have the crayon removed.If you are part of the MySchool initiative,

you played your part when you did yourChristmas shopping atWoolworths over thefestive season. This led to the donation ofR400 000 that was handed to the Children’sHospital Trust, the fundraising arm of RedCross last week.The donation has been used by the trust

to purchase specialist ear, nose and throat(ENT) equipment that will enable the hospi-

tal each year to help save the lives of ten chil-dren with life-threatening ear diseases andprevent hearing loss in 750 children.Tyrone’s mom Marlene and dad Mornay

were very happy that their son was finallygoing to have a clear ear canal once again.“We are so grateful to the Red Cross Chil-

dren’s Hospital, MySchool and Woolworthsfor the equipment that allows for these typesof operations,” said Mornay. “I don’t knowwhat we would have done otherwise and Iknow that Tyrone was in very good hands.The Woolworths Christmas Giving cam-

Ek leerook by van my spanmaats wat al lank rug-by speel en wanneer ons aan toernooie

deelneem, luister en leer jy by die anderspanne oor hoe hulle dinge doen.

“My rugbyheld is Gio Aplon, want virmy het hy gewys dat jou grootte nie op dieveld saak maak nie, jy kan die grootste ver-skil maak as jy in jouself glo. Dalk ook om-dat ek nie so groot gebou is nie, is hy virmy ’n rolmodel. Elke vrou wat rugby speel,dwing ook my bewondering af.

“Ek het geleer dat om rugby te speel, virelke vrou iets anders beteken en dis op ’n

manier ook ’n inspirasie vir vroue oor diealgemeen.

“Omdat ek in die spelskepper-posisiespeel, bring ek ’n aanvallende spel en gaandit hand-aan-hand met ’n leierskapsrol.

“Dis my werk by albei kodes om die kan-se raak te sien en dan daarvolgens te be-sluit watter aanvalle van stapel gestuur ofwatter taktiek toegepas moet word,” sê sy.

Sy het ’n diploma in afrigtingsweten-skap, maar omdat rugby nou ’n voltydseberoep is, is daar nie nou kans om verderte studeer nie, maar sy sou graag wou.

Maak opofferings“As rugbyspeler maak jy baie opoffe-

rings en dis harde werk, maar ek is vandie gelukkiges wat kan sê ek doen waar-voor ek lief is.

“Rugby is my lewe en wanneer ek nierugby speel nie, speel ek rekenaarspele-tjies en gaan kyk gereeld nuwe flieks.

“Ek het tot verlede jaar nog klubhokkie,krieket en aksie-krieket gespeel en het opskool aan atletiek en landloop deelgeneem.

“My ouma, Johanna, alombekend asKleintjie, is van kleintyd my grootste in-spirasie. Sy het my altyd aangemoedig ommy beste in alles te gee. Sy ondersteun my100% en het my ook geleer dat alles watoor ’n mens se pad kom, met rede daar is,en alles hang van jou af of jy gaan besluitof dit jou kan maak of breek.

“Elke keer as ek tuis speel is my ouersdaar en hulle is ook my steunpilare wan-neer dit goed gaan en ook wanneer dit nieso goed gaan nie. Al die meisies woon byStellenbosch Academy of Sport en baievan hulle het ook akademiese kwalifika-sies, maar rugby is nou ons almal se eersteprioriteit,” sê Chané.

Die rugbyklub Durbell pak Primrose Saterdagin ’n Superliga A-wedstryd op Primrose setuisveld.

Durbell is tans die houers van die Cell C Commu-nityCup, noubekendasdieGouebeker, endieklubfokus daarop om die Superliga vanjaar te wen.

Volgens Bobby Joubert, Durbell se afrigter,word daar nie spelers in sy span uitgesonder nie,wantdit is ’n spanpogingenelkeenmaaksybydraeom tot die sukses van die span by te dra.

“Ons het waarlik ’n jong dinamiese span metgeen uitblinkers nie, maar eerder onselfsugtige in-dividue wat in die span se visie inkoop. Benewensdie Gouebeker speel ons in die Superliga A van dieWP se klubkompetisie, waar ons onder meer teenspanne soos Maties, Ikeys, Hamiltons, Valsbaai enTygerberg speel. Ná ons sukses verlede jaar in dieCell C Community Cup-kompetisie het ons vyfdein die Superliga-kompetisie geëindig,” sê hy.

“Die Gouebeker-kompetisie is baie belangrik virdie volhoubaarheid van klubspelers wat nie stu-deer nie en dit bied hulle ook die geleentheid omkontrakte los te speel, omdat die wedstryde op tele-visie uitgesaai word. ’n Voorbeeld hiervan isGarth April, wat by ons klub was en tans losskakelvir die Sharks in die Superugby-kompetisie speel.

“Hy het juis onlangs eiehandig die Sharks sepunte (15) in hul sege van 15-14 oor die Highlandersin Dunedin met sy skopvoet aangeteken,” sê hy.

Bobby is geen onbekende aan provinsiale rugbynie. Hy was van 2008 tot 2010 die heelagter van dieSWD-Arende en hy ken van onder druk speel, enwat die verwagtinge is van jou spanmaats, onder-steuners en bestuur. “Ná my SWD-dae het ek byDurbell aangesluit en het tien wedstryde vir dieklub gespeel. Daarna is ek aangestel as hulp-afrig-ter van die eerste span saam met Jan Loubser.

“Voordat ek by die SWD aangesluit het, het ek

in 2007/2008 in Frankryk vir die klub Aurillacoisgespeel en het bietjie oorsese ondervinding opge-doen. Dit was altyd my droom om eendag my rug-bykennis aan ander oor te dra en te deel en ek hetnou die kans hier by Durbell. Garth was die eerstespeler wat ek onder hande geneem en gehelp hetom sy skopwerk te verbeter,” sê Bobby.

Maar hoe het dit gekom dat hy by afrigting be-trokke geraakhet? “Carel Steenkamp, die destydsevoorsitter in 2015, het my as speler genader, wantek was verantwoordelik vir die ontwikkelingspro-gramme by die klub. Om afrigting te doen, was ’nnatuurlike oorgangsproses.

“Die klub is baie betrokke in die gemeenskap enhelp met afrigting en speler-ontwikkeling onderdie vaandel van die Masibambane-sportstigting.

“Twee spelers wat juis uit die ontwikkeling-strukture van die stigting kom en op wie ons baietrots is, is Roderick Moses en Angus Cleophas.

“Albei was verlede jaar deel van die wenspanwat die Cell C Community Cup gewen het. Jy moetonthou die spanne wat in die Gouebeker-kompeti-sie speel, is goeie spanne en dis nie net sommervir oor hulle loop om te wen nie.

“Ek dink ons kan vanjaar kwaai teenstand ver-wag van Rustenburg Impala, Pretoria Polisie enValsbaai. Eersgenoemde sal hul nederlaag in dieeindstryd wil wreek, so ons is bewus daarvan datalmal nou ’n teiken op ons rug geplaas het.

“Nog ’n provinsiale speler wat by die klub be-trokke is, is Ashton Constant, gewese Bolandse enSWD-haker. Hy is baie betrokke by die voorspe-lers. Een van die spelers wat vanjaar dalk die WPse o.21-span kan haal, is Etienne Swarts, maar onshet ook ’n paar sewesspelers in die WP se sewes-groep, soos Jason Kriel, Jacqus Fick, Christie vanNiekerk en Jos Malherbe.

“Rugby is ’n sport waar ervaring ’n groot rolspeel en dit is belangrik dat oud-spelers by hulklubs betrokke raak.”

At the tender age of twelve Enya van Niekerketched her name in history on Thursday 7April as the youngest female swimmer everto swim from Robben Island to BloubergStrand.

Whatmakes this feat evenmoreremarkable is the fact that shebraved the icy cold water withoutawetsuit. Enya’s attempt is recog-nised by Cape Long DistanceSwim Association (CLDSA).

The Table View PrimarySchool learner completed the7.5km distance in a time of threehours and 14 minutes.

“I trained five months for thisswimming in the ocean with thewater being between 13 and 15 degrees,” shesays. Some days were tougher than others,but in the end it was all worth it. Besides thecold water I also had to dodge hundreds of jel-lyfish which required focus to navigate it

safely to the end.“Brendan Hiscock who swam with me en-

couraged me and helped a lot. The first halfwas pretty easy, but soon after that the tideturned against us and it took a lot of mentaltoughness to complete the distance. I kept im-

agining I was in a hot tub,” laugh-ed Enya.

Her father, Leon, took her toBig Bay every day for her to com-plete her 2km swim. The goal wasto do 10km every week.

“I am a very proud dad. Enyashowed tremendous courage anda fighting spirit for five months.In the end all the sacrifices wereworth it. It was something shewanted to do and now she cantick the box,” said Leon.

Enya is a member of the Nippers Big BayLifesavingClub. “I enjoy spending time in thesea and I will definitely do the swim again inthe future; let’s just hope the sea will be calmand make it a little bit easier,” she chuckled.
