It’s been an exciting, troublesome andsomewhat controversial year for thegreater Table View community.This is the sentiment expressed at the

recent Table View Ratepayers’ Associa-tion (TVRA) meeting.

The annual meeting held on Mondaydrew interested crowds as an election forthe new executive committee was to beheld. This is mainly due to the fact that

many serving on the old committee wereknown for having political affiliationsand in addition are known to be runningfor councillors in the upcoming munici-pal elections.

In his address, previous treasurer Ste-phen Stauch revealed that at the 2015 an-nual meeting the association had only 17members but in the last year this figurehad grown to 229. Of this number only 189members were paid up and eligible tovote in the elections.

Monday as outgoing chainperson LeonAlhadeff made his address.

Alhadeff launched a scathing attack onthe municipality, claiming they had fail-ed Table View residents in each of theirfive pillars.

In what has been dubbed as the “stateof Table View address”, Alhadeff saidover the past year the association hadworked hard to advance the interests ofresidents but were met with resistancefrom City officials and politicians.

He claimed councillors do not attend

regular meetings and have lost touchwith this community’s wants, needs andexpectations.

“Ward committees are dysfunctionaland do not serve the interests of this com-munity but merely serve to ensure thatthe public participation box is ticked andit is a sad time when the political deci-sions are repackaged as economic devel-opment in an attempt to overshadow theneeds or wants of residents especially interms of our beachfront.”

West Beach residents woke up to thesounds of gunfire last week follow-ing a robbery at OK Mini Market.

According to a report from Table View po-lice, on Wednesday 4 May shortly after 07:00Warrant Officer Johan Prins and WarrantOfficer Willem Collinse were at a nearbypetrol station when they were approachedby the manager of the OK Mini Market whowas in shock, asking for help, as the storewas being robbed.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant AdrianaChandler says the scene unfolded when aChubb security officer stopped at thestore for coffee, shortly after the conve-nience store opened.

“Five armed men entered the shop andtook the security officer’s pistol, hand radioand car keys. During this time the managermanaged to inform the two police officers

what was transpiring at his shop. The offi-cers immediately responded and alerted Ta-ble View police.”

When the five suspects saw the policethey ran to the back of the store and jumpedinto a getaway vehicle parked behind thestore.

Chandler says one of the suspects couldnot get into the vehicle fast enough and fellout of the moving vehicle a short distancefrom the crime scene and started to run.

A resident informed the two officers thatshe saw the man running, but unfortunatelythe information was not correct.

“Complex Patrol” was in the vicinity andspotted the suspect at the corners of Cabinand Warwick roads, West Beach. The sus-pect pointed the security officer with a fire-arm, which was later established as the fire-arm stolen from the Chubb security officer

at OK.The Complex Patrol officer fired two

shots at the suspect after a warning was notcomplied with. One bullet hit the suspect inthe upper arm. Table View police arrived atthe scene shortly afterwards and arrestedthe suspect. He received medical attentionfrom ambulance personnel at the scene.”

Chandler further explains police weregiven the registration of the vehicle and analert was sent to all neighbouring stations.

Employees of store were provided sup-port by medical staff on the scene.

“Both crime scenes were cordoned off bypolice in order to preserve all evidence. Weare now investigating a business robbery.Anyone with information is asked to con-tact the investigating officer, Sergeant Win-ston Blake on 021 521 3300 or the Crime Stopnumber on 08600 10111.”

Table View police are on the hunt for fakepolice officers who robbed two friends in Ta-ble View.

According to a police report, two mendriving a white Polo introduced themselvesas police officers when they approached thecomplainant and friend in South Road, Ta-ble View, on Sunday evening.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant AdrianaChandler says the friends were walkingwhen they were stopped by the two fake po-

licemen.“One of the men instructed them to take

off their shoes, because he wanted to searchfor drugs. He said they were police officers.The men were wearing plain clothing.”

After taking off their shoes, the suspectsdid not want to return it. One of the victimstook out a cellphone to take a picture of whatwas transpiring.

Chandler says the men threw the shoesback and demanded that the friends hand

their cellphones over to them. Once again,the complainant and friend complied.

“The suspects then sped away from thescene. The complainant managed to remem-ber parts of the number plate.”

Alhadeff also highlighted the condition ofgreen belts labelling them as “glorifieddumping grounds”.

He further said the residential area is gen-erally dirty and unkept and the natural re-sources are not maintained.

“Our dustbins are vandalised, our waterways are polluted, our beachfront is notclean, safe or user friendly and our walkways and pavements are ruled by those whotrade.”

Alhadeff also took a stab at the City’s pro-posed budget and said except for R150 000 fora skate park and R150 000 for the improve-ment of the beachfront, residents would notsee their rates being ploughed back intotheir communities.

Commenting on upgrades to water, sanita-tion, electricity and refuse collection, Al-hadeff said these were paid-for services anddid not impact reinvestment into TableView.

Speaking after the meeting, ward council-lor Joy McCarthy requested an opportunityto respond to Alhadeff’s comments.

She claims the association is ignoring thereal community issues they ought to be deal-ing with, and instead offered the meetingsas a platform to political parties.

Commenting on Alhadeff’s claims aboutward committees, McCarthy says legiti-mate, registered associations are duly elect-ed and represented on the ward committeesand communications in ward committees

are free and open.“Members have the opportunity to table

and discuss issues, as well as being informedabout important council matters. It is mostcertainly not a tick-box exercise.

“The beachfront is an acknowledged chal-lenge and is being dealt with in-depth by theSpatial Planning and Land Use Developmentdepartment’s Lorryn Steenkamp. At leastfour meetings /workshops have been held todate, inviting public and local opinion on thebuilt form, location of the road and preferredbeachfront structure and function. If the

TVRA had paid as close attention to local is-sues as to their political aspirations, theymight have been aware of and attended thesewell advertised meetings. Instead they pre-fer to complain at their open meetings abouta lack of transparency and inclusion.”

McCarthy says there are listed numbersfor illegal dumping and a call to the relevantdepartment or the logging of a service re-quest notice will result in action on all theseissues.

“If wheelie bins are being vandalised, thenthey are either left out overnight or not tak-

en in soon enough. That was part of our ap-peal during the Give Responsibly campaignand to discourage bin diggers: do not putyour bin out overnight. Canals and riversare continually being cleaned – end Aprilthere was digger/grabber cleaning in theBayside canal. The rubbish that ends uphere is not only from the locals, but alsowashed down from Sunningdale and Park-lands too. The pollution of the rivers is dueto overcrowding in certain areas and themushrooming of informal settlements.”

She also says the pavement traders arenow illegal, as the informal trading plan hasbeen promulgated. “Residents need to notifyLaw Enforcement and Metro Police to en-force the trading by-law.”

McCarthy explains the deputy mayor IanNeilson explained in his address that not allresidents receive as value for their rates isimmediately apparent.

Meanwhile the elections went ahead withresidents nominating nine people to the newexecutive committee. They include Al-hadeff, Mike Channing, Mandy Da Matta, Li-za Wilson, Alex Lepnik, Ron Bonthuys,Christiana Groenewoud, Stephen Stauchand Kelly Lee Rau.

Table View.CityMaycomember for safety and securi-

ty, JP Smith, addressed residents at theBlouberg library last week at a meetinghosted by ward 23 councillor Nora Grose.Smith opened his presentation by saying

neighbourhood watches were his favouritepeople. He said while others sat aroundcomplaining, neighbourhood watch mem-bersworkedhard to find solutions and tack-le crime.He said in recent years the City of Cape

Town had shifted its support and applied agrassroots approach as many neighbour-hood watches have come up with uniqueways to tackle crime.For this reason, the safety and security

directorate had pooled their resources toassist in various crime fighting initiativesstarted by neighbourhood watches.Smith said many issues arose with Com-

munity Policing Forums (CPFs) where rep-resentatives were found to be focused onpolitics rather than crime fighting.“Neighbourhood watches have become

muchmore coordinated in recent years andas a City we stopped focusing on what CPFshad to say as they were quite often very po-liticised and dysfunctional. We repurposedour focus and resources towards neigh-bourhood watches because we felt thosewere the people that, if we helped them abit more, they could achieve a lot.”His presentation included a five-prong

approachwhich he saidwas unique to CapeTown. This includes providing of training,

assisting with resources, recruiting andtraining of Law Enforcement Auxiliary Of-ficers among others.His department has trained more than

4000 neighbour watch members in the pastthree years.In the question and answer session, va-

grants, illegal taxi drivers, car guards, in-formal traders and training for watches inTables View took centre stage.Resident Michael Wilson questioned

what could be done about vagrants whoerect illegal structures, and the removal ofvagrants.“We have a huge vagrant problem in our

area and we would very much like it to betaken care of. It’s the same people over andover again. They admit to your face thatthey commit crime and there is nothing youcan do about it.”In response, Smith explained vagrancy

was a complex issue and saidhe couldneverget back all the hours of his life he spenttalking about it. He explained several years

ago when he was running for ward council-lor in Sea Point, he was convinced he couldfind a solution, but this proved somewhatdifficult. At the crux of the issue, saysSmith, is the courts who will not prosecutesomeone without a fixed address. He sayswhile they have now taken to serving noti-ces on offenders and even going as far as totake a picture of the offender with the no-tice, they are hoping the courts will nowprosecute these individuals.“There is nothing a guy in a uniform can

do to stop a homeless person from beinghomeless. No way will they disappear or goaway as the result of a police officer. Wecan’t fine them meaningfully because theyhave no money to pay. The courts will notprosecute anyone who has no fixed ad-dress.”Resident Mike Channing questioned

Smith about plans to tackle illegal taxi oper-ators along Blaauwberg Road. He explainedmany taxi operators had no routemarkingsand cause havoc on Table View roads asthey stop along red lines, jump traffic lightsand commit other traffic offences.Smith explained while he felt the pain of

residents, there were nearly not enough re-sources to tackle the issue.“It’s a complex answer. I have impounded

4000 taxis in 16 months and whenever weare given the excuse, we are impoundingtaxis. We have assisted provincial govern-ment in writing the provincial Traffic Actwhich includes various impoundments.Even if I put another 100 officers on yourstreets, it will do nothing. Why? Becauseyour problem is not with enforcement butfurther down the value chain with thecourts. Because themunicipal courts are soinadequate they are writing off about 50%of the fines issued every month.”

Chandler says a resident contacted policeand provided information about a drugmule that was transporting drugs from Jo-hannesburg to Cape Town. She says a taskteam was established and a search warrantwas obtained. With the information athand, police spotted the white Mercedes-

Benz with two occupants.A 35-year-old woman from Johannesburg

and a 37-year-old foreign national malewere apprehended, their vehicle wassearched and the drugs were confiscated.Police found 17kg of tikwith an estimated

street value of R4.5 million.“The arrests would not have been possi-

ble without the assistance of the communi-ty by relaying the information,” she said.

HEADSPACE BY WESTERN CAPE ACTION FORUM

Well, last week we had a long essay, but essentially it boils down to one simple questionin this time leading up to the coming elections. And that is “Which party best representsthe interest of our communitywhere it concerns the real and fundamental issues”.

Someone told me that the budget allocation to the greater Table View area, for directexpenditure, is R 350 000.00. I must go and have a look. Because theCity is spendingR5.5million onONEproject alone for our neighbours!!. That can’t be in our best interest?

Last week I touched on the crusade of the DA with their solid support for BBBEE. Iafterwards read an article about aMs. Marcelle Maritz up North in some district of whichI can’t pronounce the name (but probably was something simple like Nelspruit) whereshe resigned and joined the FF+. It was said, and I quote, “the problem according to theDA deserters is that the DA is alienating their original voters due to their (DA)commitment to rigorously apply BBBEE, Affirmative Action and land reform, in order towinmoreANCsupporters”.

Where the Western Cape has a demographic far different than the rest of SA, this can’tbe in our best interest?

I previously mentioned this coalition business between the DA and the EFF. I cameacross an interesting article in the Business Day of 4 May 2016, where it says HelenZille, prior to the 2014 elections said “I wish to state categorically that the DA will notenter into a coalitionwith theEFF under any circumstances”. She said theANCandEFFwere the two sides of the samecorrupt coin.

The same article says that when questioned whether the DAstill have the same point ofview as what she adopted, her Twitter response was “I am no longer leader. And whenthings change, theDAchanges its response”.

Coalitionwith theEFF– in the interest of our community?Doubt it verymuch?

What your question should be is whether you will be able to live with yourself if you drawyour cross based on your heart instead of yourmind.What if you support a partywhich isembarking on a political course which will be irreversible where the well-being andfuture of you and your family is concerned. Do not open Pandora’s box and keep thegenie in the bottle.

I will leave it short and sweet this week, but can’t help to wonder, without the corrupt sideof the statement, whether you get three sided coins.

performance skills to help empower youngpeople, especially in theHanover Park com-munity, and non-circus folk will get aglimpse of their non-traditional acts whenthe foundation’s core group performs atTrash Cabaret’s Carnival of Dreams at Hill-crest Quarry this Saturday (14 May).The foundation was started by Hanne,

who is originally from Denmark, and Mar-lin Roos, a second generation circus per-former who has been training since the ageof seven.Hanne saysMarlinhas always been inter-

ested in learning, teaching and giving backto the community of Hanover Park throughfree classes. She, on the other hand, comesfrom a background of theatre and socialprojects andwhen the twomet, theydecidedto combine their skills.“I was fascinated by the circus,” Hanne

Residents going online to search fortrue love are warned to be cautiousamong thousands of internet scams.

This is the warning of police in Melkbos-strand following the recent arrest of twoNi-gerian men who were found to be involvedin an international 419 romance scam.Police spokespersonConstableDebbieAl-

ard says themen aged 27 and 28were arrest-ed on Wednesday 23 March in Melkbos-strand when they were found with drugs intheir possession. She says during the arrestanundisclosedamount of dagga,moneyandlaptops were seized.Melkbosstrand detectives continued

their investigation and found the duo werepart of the international scam aimed at con-ning lonely women out of their hard earnedmoney. “The suspects are alleged to havedefrauded unsuspecting victims of copious

amounts of money. Victims usually fit theprofile of elderly and established women(often lonely) who are then beguiled into re-lationships with fictitious persons by pro-viding false digital images.”She says once the relationship starts to

“bloom” and the new found love is estab-lished, it is quickly followed up by a requestfor money.Alard says the scamsters make up some

excuse and claim they need the money ur-gently. They also promise to pay the moneyback with interest.“People especially need to be aware of

these scams and to protect themselves frombeing used like that. The men never payback the money and this can cause a lot ofemotional trauma. In these cases the menconned the victims out of thousands.”Following the investigation into these

scams, the men were rearrested and ap-peared in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Courton fraud charges.

Help forelderlyresidentsThe City of Cape Town’s Social Devel-

opment and Early Childhood Devel-opment Directorate has recruited and

trained nearly 400 people in this financialyear to participate in its home-based careprogramme.

According to a statement, the directoratestarted the initiative in 2014 as part of theVulnerable Groups Programme, to lend ahand to elderly residents in need of assist-ance around the home, but also compan-ionship.

The home-based caregivers programmeemploys workers through the City’s Ex-panded Public Works Programme (EPWP)who render social care services throughpsychosocial support, companionship,housekeeping and light household dutiesas well as referrals to other social services.The caregivers offer their services to sen-iors in their home environment and at old-age homes, clinics and hospitals.

In the first year, 2580 elderly residentssigned up for the programme.

Last year that number more than dou-bled to 5557. This year saw a high level ofinterest again, prompting the directorateto revise its target of 300 caregivers to 400.

All of the caregivers have completedtheir training and have started providingservices to clients.

Mayco member for social developmentand early childhood development, SuzetteLittle, says this speaks to the vulnerabilityof elderly residents – many of whom are nolonger able to do things for themselves, likecleaning the house or even their personalgrooming.

“I’m enthused that so many have takenadvantage of this opportunity. Not onlydoes it mean that little things are beingdone around the house for them, but it alsomeans a break from the loneliness thatmany experience – especially those livingon their own.”

The home-based caregivers are sourcedfrom the City’s job seeker database and,after their recruitment, the caregivers un-dergo various training sessions. They re-ceive in-depth training on the principles ofhome-based social care, etiquette and prop-er conduct in caring for an older person inthe home environment. They are alsotrained on how to identify older people inneed through community profiling and toprovide basic relief for family members ofolder people. Accredited first-aid training,communication and companionship as-pects are also addressed with the trainees.

The home-based caregivers have beentrained and appointed to offer the follow-ing services:

. Respite relief for family members andcaregivers of seniors,

. Companionship,

. Reading,

. Assistance in preparation of meals,

. Assistance with light cleaning andlaundry duties, and

. Referral of seniors requiring hands-oncare or medical care to the districts for fur-ther support.

“The caregivers deserve a special thankyou for rendering this service. Home-basedcare is not an easy task, especially as someseniors see outsiders as a threat to their in-dependence. In many cases the caregiversare also the ones who identify cases ofabuse and assist with interventions to helpstop this cycle,” Little says.

She may look like your average teenag-er, but this Stellenberg songbird Julan-ie J is anything but.

In fact, the 17-year-old has already enjoyedchart success with her debut album. WhenSpirit Breakout was released last year, itwent to number three on the South AfricaniTunes chart and placed at number 34 ontheir international chart in a matter of 24hours.Now, just a few months later, Julanie is

already cooking up something new.Until recently, she’s been performing

what she describes as “Christian contempo-rarymusic”, but this year she’smade the de-cision to move into the secular market.“I feel like it’s a bigger platform, and this

is what I love,” she explains, referring to thenew “RnB and pop” songs she’s been work-ing on.Julanie has been writing songs since she

lowing the murder of a 23-year-old man.Police say the young man’s murder sent

shock waves through the community lastweek,whenhis best friend (22)wasarrestedfor his murder.Station commander Captain Frederick

Rossouw explains police were called to thescene of a fight on Saturday 30April at 21:30where they found the victim has sustainedstab wounds to his chest.Rossouw explains the man was allegedly

stabbed by his friend during a squabbleabout beer andmoney.Themanwas rushedto a hospital in Atlantis where he died asa result of his injuries. Last week his friendmade a brief appearance in the AtlantisMagistrate’s Court.“The post mortem report was given last

week and showed he had been stabbedthrough the heart and his lungs were punc-tured.”This week, he says, police plan to step up

their patrols to tackle various ongoing con-cerns. “While this incident was among twopeople who knew each other, we have ongo-ing fights relating to disagreements in theIDA. This is because several communitieshave now been put in one area and people

do not know each other. We have seen as-saults rise and we are planning someawareness programmes for this.”Commenting on general crime trends,

They claimeddue to theabsenceof street lights, criminalscreep in the dark looking for an opportuni-ty to steal valuables.This was confirmed by police who said

house break-in and theft cases had in-creased. Rossouw showed TygerBurgerhow several residents had started to erectbarbed wire to safeguard their properties.“We will have to step up the patrols and

a very involved and very tired fatherwho gets just as little sleep as his wife.This weekend I went to a well-known

shopping centre in the northern suburbswith my kids and were met by a veryadamant and somewhat sarcastic securityguard.While I was unloading screaming child

number one, the guard marched towardsme and indicated that I was not allowedto park there. He furiously pointedtowards the sign reading “Moms & Tots”.The guard reasoned that I was clearly

not a mom, despite the exaggerated bagsunder my eyes hanging so low that Ineeded a bra.I refused to move the car and flatly

ignored the man.Yet, he had a point!I’m not a mom. Sowhy on earth arethere no “Dads &Tots” parkingspaces?Little did I know

my day was aboutto go from bad toworse.Screaming child

number two had adirty nappy andmuch to mydismay I discov-ered that the baby

changing area was located in the wom-en’s rest rooms.These two issues are more than just a

personal gripe.It affects every single dad, and even

more so every single single dad!As if us poor souls don’t have enough

on our plates already.It’s quite clearly a case of gross sexual

discrimination and tests a tired father’snerves to the extreme.Someone with more energy needs to do

something about it.And don’t get me started on the differ-

ence between maternity and paternityleave in South Africa!A mother needs time to heal physically

and emotionally. In most cases she needsto breastfeed every three hours, so theyobviously need to spend a long time athome after giving birth.A father’s role during this time is

nothing to scoff at, especially if he mustget up to go to work in the morning.Three days of paternity leave is a joke.

I was doing my normal schoolrun on Wednesday 4 May ataround 7:10 in the morningwhen my son asked me to stopat a filling station in Bellvilleto purchase some sweets and acooldrink at the convenienceshop located at the premises.I parked in one of the parking

bays opposite the pump sta-tions, when I noticed a manstanding with clenched fists. Atfirst I did not process that thiswas actually happening – butwhen I looked again he startedto come closer to my vehiclewith his clenched fists andthreatening behaviour. Immedi-ately I felt threatened andstarted to move my car out ofthe bay whilst franticallyhooting to get the attention ofthe petrol attendants who justlooked on. By this time I wasthinking of my son who mightbe stepping out soon from theshop. This man might hurt himas it looked that he was readyto pounce. As I hooted, andmoved off, the guy chased mewith clenched fists whilst mydaughter, who is eight yearsold, was screaming franticallyand crying in the car that “hewas coming” and calling herbrother’s name. I tried toremain calm and exited thepremises but he was still inpursuit of us. I made a U-turnto get back on the premises toget my son, praying that hemight still be in the shop.I drove straight in front of

the shop and screamed for myson, who had exited the shop bynow and thankfully stood onthe side. At this time the manwas pinned down by themanagement and when myhusband called later, he wasinformed matter-of-factly thatthe man was a “troublemaker”and was taken away by thepolice.That garage will not see us

The Southern African Foun-dation for the Conservationof Coastal Birds (Sanccob)

has successfully hatched andhand-reared the first Africanblack oystercatcher (Haemato-pus moquini) at its seabird cen-tre in Cape Town.Established in 1968, the non-

profit organisation is wellknown for its work with endan-gered African penguins and hasbeen successfully hatching Afri-can penguin and other seabirdeggs for more than five years.However, the recent addition

of a specialised Chick RearingUnit is a first for the organisa-tion.Rescued from an iron ore ter-

minal on theWest Coast, the oys-tercatcher egg was admitted toSanccob’s Chick Rearing Unitand placed in a specialised incu-bator.After 15 days of incubation, the

egg successfully hatched on Val-entine’s Day, with the chickweighing in at a healthy 42grams. As with other new hatch-lings, a big concern for the Sanc-cob staff was to prevent the littlechick from imprinting on hu-mans and consequently not be-ing able to be released back intothe wild.They also wanted to give the

new hatchling a suitable com-panion. As a solution, the team

disguised one of its Bank Cormo-rant fluffy toys from its curioshop to mimic an adult oyster-catcher using red veterinarywrap.According to Sanccob rehabili-

tation manager, Nicky Stander,disguising the fluffy toy workedextremely well and they wereable to use it to demonstrate tothe chick how to feed.“Hewas a very fast learner and

had no trouble feeding or drink-ingwaterwith thehelp of his sur-rogate mom.”The chick’s regular food con-

sists of redbait, limpets andmus-sels,whichmimics its natural di-et. It was also given closed-shellmussels to encourage it to prac-tice prying them open – as itwould do in the wild.At first it struggled, but now

manages this feeding practicewell. At just under one monthold, the oystercatcher is sprout-ing its first juvenile feathers andwill soon be ready to take its firstflight.The team anticipates its re-

lease in thenext fewweekson theWest Coast outside Cape Town.TheAfrican black oystercatch-

ermay be found off themainlandcoasts and islands of SouthernAfrica. Their diets consist most-ly of mollusks, such as musselsand limpets, but have also beenobserved eating fish and insects.They use their strong bill to pryopen mussel shells and loosenlimpets off the rocks.The species is listed as near

threatened by the IUCN Red Listof Endangered Species, andwith only 6000 breeding pairs re-maining in the wild, these birdshold a significant conservationvalue.As a non-profit organisation,

respectively in the inauguralCapeTownPropresented by Quiksilver at Big Bay, on Sun-day.The first World Surf League (WSL) Quali-

fying Series QS1 000 rated events held inCape Town for six years for men and since1992 for women, the Cape Town Pro present-ed competitors with the opportunity to earnpoints on both the QS and WSL Africa re-gional rankings, along with prize purses ofR30 000 for men and R20 000 for women.Hoffman emerged triumphant in the see-

saw women’s final in which she and FayeZoetmulder (Port Elizabeth) both deliveredscores in the excellent range, taking the leadwith an 8.83 that left Zoetmulder needing an8.60 for victory.“To be a winner in my home town is just

great! I haven’t won an event in so long andto win a WSL event and earn some pointshere is really an honour and so exciting,”said Hoffman. “It was a very well surfed fi-nal. Faye had a couple of really good waveswhile I played the patience game. Then Ifound a great little runner that let me do acouple of turns and gave me an eight, andFaye didn’t find another good wave.”Zoetmulder, who – like Hoffman – has

competed extensively on theQS circuit over-seas, was proud of the standard of women’ssurfing at an event in home surf.“It was a really good finalwith Tanika.We

threw some good scores down. I’ve come a long way from

Peru on my own and I really focused on thiscompetition. This win is for my family, formy country and for Punta Hermosa whereI live,” said an ecstatic Del Castillo, whowaschaired from the edge of the water to the po-dium by a pair of local surfers in a heart-warming display of sportsmanship.“Thanks Cape Town, thanks South Africa;I’m really, really happy. Thank you.”The victory earned Castillo R12 000 and

Enya showed true grit as she endured the icy ocean water during her record attempt.

At the tender age of twelve Enyavan Niekerk etched her name inhistory onThursday 7April as the

youngest female swimmer ever to swimfromRobben Island to Blouberg Strand.What makes this

feat even more re-markable is the factthat she braved the icycold water without awetsuit.Enya’s attempt is

recognised by CapeLong Distance SwimAssociation (CLDSA).The Table View Pri-

mary School learnercompleted the 7.5kmdistance in a time ofthree hours and 14minutes.“I trained five

months for this swim-ming in the oceanwith the water beingbetween 13 and 15 de-grees,” she says.“Somedayswere tougher thanothers,

but in the end itwas allworth it. Besidesthe cold water, I also had to dodge hun-dreds of jellyfish which required focus

to navigate it safely to the end.“BrendanHiscockwho swamwithme

encouraged me and helped a lot. Thefirst half was pretty easy, but soon afterthat the tide turned against us and ittook a lot of mental toughness to com-plete the distance. I kept imagining I

was in a hot tub,”laughed Enya.Her father, Leon,

took her to Big Bayevery day for her tocomplete her 2kmswim. The goal was todo 10km every week.“I am a very proud

dad. Enya showed tre-mendous courage anda fighting spirit forfive months. In theend all the sacrificeswere worth it. It wassomething she want-ed to do and now shecan tick the box,” saidLeon.Enya is a member

of the Nippers BigBay Lifesaving Club. “I enjoy spendingtime in the sea and I will definitely dothe swim again in the future; let’s justhope the sea will be calm and make ita little bit easier,” chuckled Enya.
