Ao.

The Unjani Private Clinic in Delft isplaying its part in promoting healthawareness in the community.
Last week the facility hosted an impor-tant awareness programme concerning cer-vical cancer because health practitioner Pa-tricia Philemon felt that women needed tobe aware of resources available to them.“In the course of our normal consulta-
tions we found that there are lots of womenwho are still ignorant about cervical can-cer,” she said.“My fear was that should it be found later
then it cannot be reversed, but if detectedearly it can be cured andwomenwill be ableto live a normal life.”At the awareness programme she ex-
plained that cervical cancer is the secondmost common cancer among South Africanwomen. She says that she is determined to grab
every opportunity this year to empower thecommunity as they are celebrating cancer
month.“Feedback from the community was posi-
tive,” she said.“Some could relate to the topic and others
were sharing their personal experiencesand engaging very well.“The environment was so nice and pri-
vate, allowing the community to open upand lots of bookings for pap smears weremade.”The next topic for February will be about
prostate and testicular cancer.V For more information please contact Ntombozukoat 071 228 8441.

Lourens leRoux, sekerheidshoof vanWel-

Recent tip-offs have resulted in greatsuccesses for the City of Cape Town’senforcement agencies over the last
couple of weeks. In Lavender Hill they recovered a Glock
pistol and confiscatedmandrax tablets witha street value of more than R80 000. Fourpeople were arrested. The Metro Police received a tip-off last
weekend when they arrested a suspect forpossession of a 9mm pistol and five roundsof ammunition. They also confiscated 30parcels of dagga and arrested two suspectsafter pulling over their vehicle.Other successes for the Metro Police in-
cluded 13 other drug-related arrests – 20 fordriving under the influence of alcohol, and
five arrests on various charges includingoutstanding warrants and possession ofcounterfeit goods. The Law Enforcement Social Housing
Unit apprehended a suspected drug dealerat a block of flats in Ravensmead after re-ceiving an anonymous tip-off from the com-munity. Searches of various social housingunits in Manenberg resulted in five arrests– four for the possession of drugs.‘‘We have definitely noticed an increase
in the number of people who have come for-ward with information. In many cases, theinformation has resulted in confiscations, but also arrests. I thinkwhat is a critical fac-tor here is that the informants are seeingtheir tip-offs result in positive action, which
is why we’re getting more and more infor-mation being fed through.”“This type of partnership is crucial in en-
suring safer communities. From our side,we have made a great effort to develop thecapacity and skills to drive an intelligence-led approach to our policing efforts, espe-cially relating to crimes involving drugsand gangs,” says the City’s Mayco memberfor safety and security, JP Smith. On Saturday 23 January, the Ghost Squad
and theCity’s newly formedRoadblockUnitteamed up in Bothasig. Officers arrested 19suspects – 18 for driving under the influenceand one for reckless and negligent drivingafter he tried to speed away from the road-block, but was quickly chased down.

Child rapeprobed byParowpoliceMAGRIET THERON

She identified her alleged rapist, butno-one has been arrested yet for therepeated rape of the four-year-old girl
at the Parow day care centre she was at-tending.The child’s mother, who cannot be
named to protect the youngvictim, says sheis perplexed that no arrest have been madeyet, although her child apparently told herthat the perpetrator was the husband of theday mother where she stays four nights aweek. On the morning of Saturday 16 January
the mother, who recently started workingnight shifts, picked up her child from theday care where her daughter sleeps whenshe is on duty.“My child could not walk; she was in
pain. I took her to a doctor who referred usto Karl Bremer Hospital,” she says. Here doctors confirmed the mother’s
worst fear and contacted the police to re-port a rape case.
Suspect identified“The case is being investigated by our
special unit FCS,” says Lieutenant KevinWilliams of the Parow police.According to him a suspect has been
identified but not arrested “in order for theinvestigator to do a thorough investigationinto the matter”.“It is a small house and six adults sleep
there. How is it possible that no-one heardmy child screaming? Why aren’t all of themarrested?“Why was the suspect’s computer and
cell phone not taken in as possible evi-dence?” the mother asks.Themother said she paid the daymother
R200 per night for her child to sleep there,in the same room as her.“I trusted her with my child,” she says.According to Williams the day mother
can only be held accountable for the crimeif she knew about it but did not report itto the police or a social worker.“Any action against the day care centre
can be reported to a social worker by theparent for possible investigation. The po-lice will focus on the criminal investiga-tion,” Williams says. The mother says DNA tests will now be
done to determine who raped her child, butthis may take weeks, if not months. She has quit her job to be with her child,
who is now receiving treatment and coun-selling at Karl Bremer.
When her mother drew four stick mencharacters and gave them different names, the four year old rape victim scratched outthe one she identified as the man who hurther. PHOTO: MAGRIET THERON

Slenters kos mensehul huise, karre, geldMICHELLE LINNERT
@linnertmb
“Mense verloor hul huise, karre engroot bedrae geld as gevolg van‘sangoma-slenters’.”
“Dié geld moet in ’n swartsak geplaasword.Danvolg daar ’n ritueel in ’nbaie don-ker kamertjie.
FienieNimb, polisiewoord-voerder.
haar vingerafdrukke moet neem.

Mountain biking has seen great growth inSouth Africa, and so have the opportunitiesfor aspiring young cyclists.Despite the fact that SAboasts someof the
best mountain biking tracks in the world,it is largely inaccessible to children in high-risk communities such as Bonteheuwel dueto high travelling costs and bi-cycle transfers.A teacher at Bergsig Prima-
ry School in Bonteheuwel,GrahamHector, completed theAbsa Cape Epic in 2015 and de-cided to lay out a 1km moun-tain biking cross countrycourse on the school grounds. The course, developed with
the help of the Jag Foundation, includes drops, hills, berms, jumps, tight corners and flatstraights, allowing the chil-dren to experience all the as-pects of this exciting sport. It has now become home to
the Jag Foundation’s JagRid-
ers programme.Over the years numerous mountain bik-
ing legends have taken on the Bergsigcourse and onMonday thisweek, topmoun-tain bikers including local mountain bikerCherie Vale visited the school and showedoff their skills.

Hope for BlikkiesdorpBetter services inBlikkiesdorp
is the aim of a local NGO inDelft this year.
Hope Cape Town has vowed tocontinue with its efforts in thecommunity of Blikkiesdorp de-spite the challenges the organisa-tion is facing on the ground. The organisation currently has
offices in the Delft township whereits resident community healthworker provides critical interven-tions on a daily basis. This is in addition to the soup
kitchen, vegetable garden and so-cial worker services that they alsoprovide.According to donor relations
manager, Fahim Docrat, their big-gest challenge is that of ensuringsafety and security of staff, volun-teers and offices on the ground.“Our offices have been broken
into numerous times owing to theplight and desperation of people inthe community, but also the lack of
adequate police presence.“The 90% unemployment within
Blikkiesdorp and the ongoing gangviolencemakes it a dangerousmix.“Last month a 15-year-old girl,
whose familywe support andknowwell for many years, was killed incrossfire during a gang shooting.”He added that despite these chal-
lenges, they were here to stay andcommitted to serving the commu-nity. “The children of the Blikkies-dorp Crèche rely on us for break-fast every day and the toy librarythat we established for them tolearn through play.“We continue with our advocacy
efforts and have requested for theCity of Cape Town and provincialgovernment to establish an openair gym inBlikkiesdorpwhichwillbe fantastic for the residents. “Weare hopeful that they will heed ourrequest and support our efforts.”Hope Cape Town is located at the
Medical School of theUniversity of
Stellenbosch Tygerberg Campusand is a non-profit organisationproviding outreach, education andcounselling at community level, fo-cusing on HIV/Aids and TB in theWestern Cape.It is linked to the University of
Stellenbosch and cooperates withthe department of paediatrics andKid-Cru, the Tygerberg Hospital’sresearch unit for paediatric infec-tious diseases. They began their work in 2001
with itsmission to impact the com-munities they work in and havebeen very successful to date. Hav-ing expanded their services to ad-dress the increasing need they arenowmore reliant on the generosityof business and individuals to helpfund their programmes.V To support Hope Cape Town or find outmore about the work they do contact Fahim Docrat on 021 938 9339 or email fa[email protected] or visitwww.hopecapetown.com.

comewomen and youth at the Bell-ville SouthWomen and Youth Cen-tre on thepremises of the localBell-ville South Civic Centre.Joy Warries, the coordinator of
the programme, explained thatover the last eight years more than300womenof all ageswho tookpartin the various soft skills work-shops, graduated.“Women from as far afield as
Athlone and Eerste River took upthe challenge to change their eco-nomic status,” she said.“Soft skills like sewing,
arts and crafts and beadinghave the possibility to putmoney in your purse assome of the graduates haveproven. It all depends onyou.“We have several women
who took up the challengeand started their own busi-nesses after completing thebusiness course and one ormore of the skills trainingcourses offered.”She added that sometime
women don’t want to takethe coursebecause theyarenot confident of their capa-bilities.
“We have an exciting course thatteaches you how to be creative. Ifyou think that you are not creativeor you feel stuck, youmust registerfor this six weeks course.“Our facilitator of the awaken-
ing creativity course is a qualifiedart teacher. This training will sur-prise you and your family.”As the price of vegetables and

Teenagers get taste of ‘life’ in jail
A member of the Prisoners of ChristMinistries addresses learners at KleinvleiHigh School.
RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj
High school pupils in Eerste River andBlackheath were given a slight tasteof what life behind bars is like.
The presentation about life in jail and thedangers that accompany it, was hosted bya group of former convicts belonging to thePrisoners of Christ Ministries. The first presentation was held last week
at Kleinvlei High School and on Monday atBlackheath High School.“It is really something to witness. The
children’s eyes actually widen when theyhear these stories,” said Captain FlorinaMuller, spokesperson for the Kleinvlei po-lice.Prisoners of Christ surprised the chil-
dren with a role-play and sketched theirown life as former prisoners to warn theschool children of life in prison, Mullersaid. The presentation at Kleinvlei High,
which forms part of a Safer Schools Project, was held in conjunctionwith the police andlocal artists.Peter Hendricks and his wife, Sophia,
partnered with a friend, Adriaan Samuels,on the initiative and made the event unfor-gettable for these school children, Mullersaid.A total of 950 children listened very care-
fully to the talks about behaviour in schoolsand the illegal activities theyparticipate in.“Drugs and gangswere some of the topics
that were discussed.“Prisoners of Christ gave testimonies of
their life in prison, about the illegal activi-ties theywere involved in fromayoungage, and how they were placed in rehabilitation
centres by [the department of] social devel-opment or sentenced to years of imprison-ment,” explained Muller .As part of their social crime responsibili-
ties, Muller, her colleague Keith Africa andthe sector commander, Warrant Officer Jo-hannes Jacobus Alexander, spoke to thelearners about peer pressure, small gangsformed at school, drug smuggling ontoschool premises and the choices they makein life. The children were given the chance to
speak to Prisoners of Christ after the pre-sentations.Julian Unthank, chairperson of the local
community police forum (CPF), said as abody they support the initiative.
“The young ones need to know whatawaits themwhen they enter a life of crime.“We will however have to wait and see
whether they take note and follow the rightpath,” he said.He added that theCPFwelcomes the initi-
ative to warn teenagers about the dangersof prison.“Drugs cause a big problem in the area.
The drug bosses make a lot of money andthat business is also the reason there is ter-ritorial fights among the gangs. Thesefights spill over into schools,” he said.Unthank further explained the drug
problem is getting worse each day and saideverything should be done to preventyoung children from committing crime.
