In the past week the Nyanga cluster polic- ing precinct arrested more than 260 sus- pects. These suspects were apprehended during various operations conducted in Bishop Lavis, Elsies River, Gugulethu, Ma- nenberg, Nyanga and Philippi East. According to police spokesperson Captain Marie Louw there were a number of arrests and successes achieved during these crime- fighting operations. “182 suspects were apprehended during searches at drug houses and stop and search operations where warrants of arrests were also issued,” she says. “Operations were also conducted at 40 she- beens, which led to 19 people arrested for dealing in liquor without licences. “Tracing operations were conducted with 30 wanted suspects arrested. 30 suspects were also apprehended for crimes commit- ted against women and children.” She added that 521 visits were made to spa- za shops and 13 visits to second-hand goods shops. Sixty-one vehicle control points were held. “Some suspects were apprehended for cas- es ranging from murder, assault with the in- tent to do grievous bodily harm, attempted murder, robbery, possession of stolen prop- erty and driving under the influence of li- quor.” Some of the incidents that Louw high- lights include: . On Wednesday last week officers from Bishop Lavis were busy following up on in- formation received about a murder suspect, when they saw two unknown men running into a house in Bishop Lavis. They followed the two men and searched them, finding an unlicensed firearm with one magazine and seven rounds, tik, man- drax and a scale in their possession. . In an incident on Thursday 2 July the crime prevention unit in Bishop Lavis re- ceived reliable information from the com- munity that drugs were kept on premises at a house in Valhalla Park. When the police searched the premises they found 67 cut mandrax half-tablets and 15 whole mandrax tablets. These successes, she says, are a result of police officers’ diligence and vigilance and some were through information shared by responsible community members. “People are always complaining that we are not reacting to their information,” says Louw. “But, these exercises and arrests prove that we are taking action when we get information from the public. We are warn- ing these criminals that their neighbour- hoods are not looking the other way and we will continue to take drastic action against them to maintain safety.” With information from the public an im- portant tool in the fight against crime, the police are seeking help in solving some of the following crimes: . On Friday last week at 21:30 two occu- pants of a car were waiting in the drive- through at KFC Airport Mall, Belhar when they were accosted by two unknown men in their early twenties. The suspects held them up at gunpoint, threw them out of the car and sped off with the car in an unknown direction. V To page 2. Leo Mews on full power soon

Electricity will be in place for all residents at Leo Mews soon. PHOTO: GARY VAN DYK

Electricity will soon be part of life for allresidents living at the LeoMews devel-opment in Elsies River.

This development in Leonsdale was con-verted to City rental units. The units were initially being built for

sales purposes, but vandalism affected thepower supply to some of the units. Now allsystems are in place for the all the installa-tions made to become fully functional.LeoMews consists of 125 completed rental

units and forms part of the administration’scommitment to redress, through the provi-sion of rental opportunities for those whoqualify. The City’s human settlements directorate

currently has two contractors on site restor-ing the electricity supply to the last 35 unitsat the development. This includes rewiring or replacing plugs

and the installation of electricity dispenseunit (EDU) meters. This means the entire complex will soon

have access to electricity. Before the 35 tenants were allocated these

units, they were informed that the dwell-ings had been badly vandalised. They were also told the process had been

started to assign contractors to restore theelectricity supply and to replace the elec-tricity (EDU) meters. This currently costs the City approxi-

mately R250 000.“The City wants to thank the residents of

Leo Mews for their patience during the en-tire process,” said theCity’sMaycomemberfor human settlements, Benedicta van Min-nen.“This includes [the time it is taking] now,

while the electricity is being restored andthe EDU meters are being replaced as a re-sult of vandalism which took place prior totheir occupancy.“The process of appointing the electrical

contractors has taken some time, as the nec-essary processes needed to be followed.

“As a caring City, we are pleased to seethat all the families living at Leo Mews willbe able to enjoy the benefits of having elec-tricity in their homes, especially now, dur-ing winter.”Council approved the City’s acquisition

of the Leo Mews development from Stan-dard Bank in January 2014. As such, 90 of

the units at Leo Mews are brand new.Standard Bank could not sell these units

in the Gap market as they had intended to,and the City therefore acquired the proper-ty at a much lower rate than what it cost todevelop the property. To date, all the unitshave been allocated to beneficiaries, includ-ing elderly tenants.

Players of all ages participated ina soccer festival hosted inRosendal on two Saturdays.

A community in Delft has started using soc-cer to combat dumping, gang activity anddrug abuse in their area.Residents ofRosendal got together andor-

ganised a soccer festival on two consecutiveSaturdays from the beginning of thismonth.“We took this initiative to develop a bet-

ter and active community,” says one of theorganisers, Godwin Blignaut.“The festival involved all ages. The objec-

tive was not to compete for any awards butjust to play and break barriers between theyouths from different streets and areas toshow how there is strength in unity.”Godwin also points out that the eventwas

also to bring attention to the lack of resour-ces in the area and the need to keep openspaces clean.“The field where we played is used as a

dumping site, so we, as a community, had

to come together to clean it up and trans-form it into a field of hope,” he says.Godwin says the organisers were very

happy to see how this event brought peopleand families together.“While the teams played, the parents and

general community came out to cheers theteams on.“This was a chance for the parents and

community to see that our youngsters havesporting abilities and skills.“We hope that one of the results of this

initiative is that it played a part in reducingthe gang activities in the area as well asdrug and alcohol abuse.”Godwin explains that they want to orga-

nise similar events on a regular basis.“We need more people in our communi-

ties involved in similarprogrammesandwecall on the authorities to play their part inhelping to develop this initiative.“More open spaces must be developed so

that they don’t become dumping zones –they must become areas of hope.”

Stockholm, Delft share big soundsRight: Fredrik Noren, leader of the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, left, and Delft

GARY VAN DYK@gvdcapejazz

The art of the big band was in town lastweek when the Stockholm Jazz Orches-tra visited the city and got to share

their passion with the Delft Big Band fromCape Town.

The world-renowned ensemble from Swe-den performed with singer Gavin Minter atthe Baxter on Tuesday last week after per-formances in Grahamstown.

These musicians have a long history ofmusical collaborations with the city. Minterhas recorded and performed with them onseveral occasions, and they added to their

visit by hosting a workshop with the DelftBig Band at the rehearsal room in Airportindustria.

The visiting musicians were very im-pressed with the talented youngsters fromthe local band and motivated them with ad-vice on how to improve their talent.

AdviceFredrik Noren, leader of the Stockholm

Jazz Orchestra, pointed out the importanceof constant practice and sight reading andbeing able to “double” on instruments in thewoodwinds section.

“For such a young band you have a goodsound and it’s always important to work on

how you can sound better, together,” he toldthe youngsters.

“It’s not always easy but you must startworking on being able to double in the wood-wind section. That way you can always getmore work in big bands, because a lot ofcharts require you to switch to clarinet orflute from time to time.”

HonourDelft trumpeter Lorenzo Blignaut said

that he and his fellow members really en-joyed the workshop.

“For me it was an honour and privilege tobe able to be in the presence of one of theworld’s best big bands,” he said.

“We learned so much from them and I’mso grateful that we were able to play someof their music that they donated to us. I hopethat they come back soon.”

MotivationDelft musical director Ian Smith was also

excited about the visit and pointed out thatthese experiences could only motivate theband to keep on improving.

“We were also in Grahamstown andpacked out the performances with standingovations at every concert,” he said.

“But it’s when you have a workshop likethis that you learn how to improve and honeyour craft as a big band musician.”

The saxophone section of the two bands join forces during the workshop.

The Equilibrium organisation in ElsiesRiver is celebrating another successfulschool holiday programme for the youth inthe area.

This annual holiday club was presentedfrom 29 June to 3 July with the theme “Youare brave enough”.

“Our aim was to take the children on ajourney of self-discovery and determina-tion,” says one of the facilitators, YolandeGroep. “About 300 kids took part in every-day activities.”

Equilibrium worked with the depart-ments of community and safety and educa-tion, Scripture Union, the police and Peoplefor Christ Ministry to provide a joyful andsuccessful week.

Unemployed youngsters, who were fund-ed by the City’s job creation programme, were included as volunteers. Even futuredoctors and nurses joined the volunteers.

“The police educated our youngsters onsubstance abuse and xenophobia,” saysGroep.

“Pastor Brooks from People for ChristMinistry also took the time to uplift thechildren with the word of God and encour-age the inner change within themselves.

“All children from grades R to 7 took partin various activities, such as soccer, netballand indigenous games. For the little ones, stations of arts and crafts were available.

“The children were blessed with dailymeals and presented their daily learningsin a fun-filled presentational way. Manytalents were revealed and praised.”

Groep is grateful for the volunteers in-volved. “We at Equilibrium would like tosay a big thank you to everyone who madethis year’s holiday programme unforgetta-ble and successful. To all children: Remem-ber you are brave enough; brave enough tostart, brave enough to listen, brave enoughto be.”

The inaugural Cape Town Cup will set theMother City alight with two internationalteams set to challenge two PSL teams in atwo-day double header soccer extravagan-za.

The City of Cape Town has announcedthat the Cape Town Cup soccer tournamentwill see host team Ajax Cape Town wel-come Portuguese team Sporting Club dePortugal aswell asEnglishPremierLeagueteam Crystal Palace FC and SuperSportUnited from up country at the Cape TownStadium next weekend.

The first game on Friday, which kicks offat 17:45, will see SuperSport United take onCrystal Palace.

Shortly after this, at 20:15, Ajax andSporting go head to head.

Sunday’s action will start at 13:00 withthe losers of Friday’s two matches chal-lenging each other.

REMO ANDREWS

The battle lines were drawn at the CapeSun Hotel last week as some of theworld’s strongest chess players gath-

ered to contest this year’s South AfricanOpen Chess Festival.

The event was supported by the WesternCape department of cultural affairs andsport.

Advocate Lyndon Bouah, chief director ofsport and recreation, says: “In developing awinning nation it is important to improveinternational sports successes by support-ing events at all levels.

“Achieving an active and winning nationis underpinned by an enabling environ-ment.

“The staging of this event at the Cape Sunis part of our campaign to bring big sportevents to the Western Cape.”

South Africa’s first ever grandmaster,Kenny Solomon, marked his return to com-petition on South African soil, which was al-so his first tournament on home soil after of-ficially receiving the title of grandmasterearlier this year.

Solomon, originally from Mitchell’s Plainand a previous winner of the tournament, placed fourth in this year’s tournament witha score of 8.5.

“It was a tough tournament with a lot ofstrong players. I am happy that we were abletohave four grandmasters participating thisyear,” he says.

“It is important that foreign grandmastersparticipate in South African chess events –this is how chess can grow in our country.”

The tournament also incorporated the SAschools individual chess championship. Thechampionship saw some of the best juniorplayers in the country come up against eachother.

Former national junior team coach Calvin

Klaasen believes young players have an op-portunity to make a career of the game if thesupport shown at the SA Open continues togrow.

“It’s important for young players to identi-fy with heroes, to have something to strivefor.

“There are limited opportunities foryoung players in South Africa to progress toa professional level at the moment, but thatcan change if we are supported correctly.Kenny’s grandmaster title is just step one inSouth Africa becoming a powerful chess

country,” he says.Solomon, who now lives in Italy, believes

events of this nature need to happen moreoften if we are to produce more internation-al-grade players.

“Chess events like these help people buildconnections as we were there competing forover a week, so apart from the playing thereis also the post-game analysis and it’s inthese sessions where chess players can takethe opportunity to learn even more,” hesays.

English chess legend grandmaster NigelShort emerged victorious at the end of the11-round event. He gained the title based ona tie-break system, after ending on ninepoints alongside grandmaster Aleksa Strik-ovic from Serbia and India’s grandmasterAbhijit Kunte.

Short has been playing with the best sincehe became a grandmaster at age 19. He wasregularly placed in the top ten in the worldbetween the late 1980s and late 1990s.

He became the first English player to playfor the World Chess Championship titlewhen he played against Garry Kasparov in1993.

Solomon will next travel to Gauteng alongwith Short to play in a qualifier for one ofthe biggest chess tournaments in the worldtaking place in Las Vegas.
