For every young girl in matric, the end ofyear dancemust be a special event andAmySwartz fromBelhar is on amission tomakethat dream come true. She has started a project, Bell of the Ball,

for young ladies who may not have all thefinancial resources to make it a reality andtransform them into the “Belle of the Ball”when they attend their school’s matric ball. They recently hosted their launch at Vac-

ca Matta in Bellville where they raisedmoney for their project and showcasedsome of the donations that they have re-ceived sincemaking their appeal to the pub-lic.Elana Afrika, popular radio and TV pre-

senter, is supporting the initiative and do-nated some of her shoes to the project at thelaunch. With this project Swartz, who is assisted

by her cousin, Candice Swartz, offersGrade12 learners from disadvantaged circum-stances an unforgettable experience at afraction of the cost. For R100 they supply a selection of dress-

es that they can choose from, shoes, make-up, hair-dos, nails and accessories.Amy pointed out that the project was

called, Bell of the Ball, with a connection toher daughter Isabella, who is her own Bellof the ball.“We started in May this year to help girls

who are not fortunate enough to have thatspecial matric dance,” she says.“Sowe act like a fairy godmother tomake

their dream come true, by supplying thedress, shoes, jewellery, nails and makeup. The fee that we charge is only to cover the

cleaning of the dress so that we can main-tain it for many more to use in the commu-nity.”She added that so far various companies

are sponsoring the nails, hair and makeup, but they have been blessedwith people whoshare their dream of making this time in alearner’s life special.“One of our biggest donations was made

by SALT (Sharing Abundant Life Togeth-er), a social empowerment organisation, who donated more than three boxes ofdresses,” she said.“We’re not stopping our drive for dona-

tions, because we can always use that dressthat you are never going to wear again.“It canmake a big difference in another’s

life.”Swartz also pointed out that another mo-

tivation for her to start the project wasthere were so many girls in the communitythat needed help.“When it came to matric balls there were

always girls who needed help,” she said.

“I would help with hair and makeup, andI had four dresses of my own that I couldhelp some girls with.“That’s when I realised that I could do

more – I love to help people and this is a spe-cial night for any girl.”She started appealing for donations and

as word spread it all got a bit too much forher to handle alone.“That’s when I roped in my cousin Can-

dice to help out with admin,” she smiles.“At the moment our space is very limited

becausewe have over 200 dresses and boxesof shoes and jewellery. So we are lookingto get some storage space.”V For more information Amy can be contacted on081 474 4499, or Candice on 071 181 1552. They’realso on Facebook, www.facebook.com/pages/BelloftheBall/487162758031148.

Dinsdagaand toe ons by die huis kom,

Woensdagoggend begin ek toe my soek-

Willie was so dankbaar oor ons helde-

Vir bykans 10 jaar was hierdie wedloop

Hul leuse was: “’n Jongmens in sport, is

Very few learners would sacrifice theirholiday time to learn – least of all if thelearning was about mathematics.

Well, a group of about 140 learners –a new record for the additional mathsclasses offered over the September holi-days by a local Eerste River church – didjust that.

“Since the notice placed in last week’s(18 September) TygerBurger, we hadmore than 100 learners for the first time.In fact, we had 142,” said Donovan Rame-dies.

He is an assignment officer at Helder-kruin Primary School (the host venue),as well as a leader in the Nazarenechurch, who organised this second annu-al maths support class.

The learners came out from all over. They were from schools like Simon’sTown High, Steenberg High, LengtegeurHigh, Portlands High, Kleinvlei High,Malibu High, Blackheath High, RhodesHigh, Bishop Lavis High, Hottentots Hol-land High, Bellville, Northpine andKuils River Technical High andWesbank High, among others, Donovansaid.

ResultsThere were learners from more than

35 schools and two colleges, he said.“Please pray for all these learners as

we expect great results from all of them,

especially our Grade 12 learners. I’msure they will make us proud,” he said.

The programme, which they hope willkeep growing yearly, assists learners inGrades 8 to 12 with maths and mathemat-ical literacy support.

This is the second year the initiativebetween the Church of the Nazarene, theorganisation Poverty and Compassion ofthe Dutch Reformed Church, and Helder-kruin Primary School is presented.

The programme lasted for the two fulldays, 23 and 24 September, at the prima-ry school in Kleinvlei, Eerste River.

ThanksThe co-ordinators wished to thank or-

ganisers and contributors alike. These include Ingrid Zeelie of the Pov-

erty and Compassion organisation,Sher’Neil Savel, Dr Braam Hanekom ofPoverty and Compassion; parents whoassisted during the two days, the care-takers at Helderkruin Primary, theschool’s principal (Archibald Valentyn),the Western Cape Superintendent of theNazarene Church, as well as all theschool principals who took the time toannounce the project at their variousschools.

Donovan said their goals for 2014 wereto have the classes from Grade 4 to 12 atmore venues and over the March holi-days as well.V Contact Donovan Ramedies at 072 050 5089or 079 752 6871, or donny@helderkruin.wcape.school.za.

The time has come for local talent to shinefor a new show on Cape Town TV.This is the idea from TV show host and

2012 Legends of Kung Fu World Champion,MJ Li, who came up with the idea to givelocal talent a show of its own.He says that at the endofAugust, they shot

a pilot episode at a restaurant in Mowbray, which has already been airing on CTV and

the positive response will see another epi-sode coming up on Friday.“The pilot was filmed and presented be-

fore a live audience of approximately 250people, with about 20 contestants enteringon the night,” he says.“Talents that took to the stage showcased

karaoke, dancing, martial arts, stand-upcomedy and some Spanish guitarists.“On thenight theaudience selected the top

five entrants who all won some prizes sup-plied by various sponsors.”

Li added that since airing the event therewas lots of interest from the public.“We have shown that when it comes to tal-

ent we can stand on our own with all the tal-entwehave in this part of theworld,” he con-tinued.“Good feedback from viewers, indicates

that the concept can work.“During the filming of the pilot, the show

attracted contestants from across CapeTown and places like the Bo-Kaap, Salt Riv-er, Kensington, Bellville, Ravensmead,

Philippi, and Mitchells Plain.“So with this in mind, our next shoot of

CapeTownHasTalent takes place onFriday, starting at 20:00, at Suraya’s Restaurant, 69Main Road, Mowbray.“If you think you’ve got what it takes, this

is the place to be.”Contestants will be given two minutes to

showcase their talent for the judges.V For more information the organisers can be contacted on 021 838 1535, cell 084 2175759 or [email protected].

Some times as human beings itbecomes a habit for us to

Peace and love iswhat world needs

engage in atrocities in the nameof religion, race or origin.I was very saddened by the

killings of the muslims and nonmuslims in Kenya. This is allin the name of revenge andreligion. It makes me howeverthink of all the people beingoppressed and killed because ofrace, origin and religion.South Africans should wake

up and learn through these dayto day inhuman acts. Theattacks on foreigners, muslimand non muslim, could be ofawakening to inhuman andmerciless groups like theseAl-Shabaab and Al-Qaeda. I lovemy country and yes I’m black! Iwouldn’t want destructive actslike these to happen in mycountry. When people get killed we

watch, read and do nothing. Wesit back, relax and pretendnothing is happening. Butremember someone, somewhereis watching and following. Let’spreach love South Africa! Loveone another, you don’t loseanything from loving oneanother, be it black or white, mixed, Xhosa, Afrikaans, Zulu,Venda, Swahili, Shona, Somali. We are all people. I condemnxenophobic attacks becausethey make our country looklike a circus with a bunch ofarrogant, senseless humanbeings who don’t have a heartfor other people. When attackslike these happen we startlooking so far for answers? Some things are avoidable. OneLove ... history teaches us whenthe oppressed becomes strong, the oppressor gets weak. Peace!

Throughout the calendar year, specific days weeks or monthsare set out to bring awarenessof one or other issue such asWomen’s Day, 16 Days ofActivism against Women andChildren Abuse, Cancer Dayand Mandela Day, etc. This special awareness period

makes us the public very muchalert to the aims and goals ofthe organisations involved inthese important issues andcampaigns and so reaffirmscommitment to the end result. As I was thinking about this

issue I could not help buthighlight the fact that poorservice delivery is becoming anational plague in some of ourcommunities and how thecitizens who are not receivingservice delivery are being moreviolent and vocal. They arerunning in the streets and actout barbaric scenes on thestate’s property by destroyingmunicipal buildings andequipment. The initial blame is not the

state’s property but the publicservants employed or voted into ensure service delivery. To our honourable state

president who is the custodianand monarch of service deliv-ery for the people of SouthAfrica may I propose that atthe beginning of every year hedeclares that we have a ServiceDelivery Commitment Weekwhereby parliament and allstate department staff advertisethemselves and their roles inservice delivery and pledgecommitment and dedication todeliver service. In that week the public and

state officials can open chan-nels and find each other byintroducing who in eachrespective municipality isresponsible for respectiveservice delivery. This will lead to a better

more dedicated service deliveryto an enlightened public whodemands that service.

cal musos, started a few years ago and hasincluded the cream of the crop on the localscene. With this Cape Jazz Series they are now

releasing Volume 4 which is also entitledMusical Democracy.Paddy Lee-Thorpe, of Mountain Records,

has been involved with the music industryin this part of theworld since the 1970s, hav-ing produced and managed acts like PacificExpress, and Jonathan Butler when hestarted getting into the jazzier side ofmusic.“I’ve never lost my love for the music

from the Cape,” he confesses.“Most of the time I am based in Germany,

but when I want to take a quick trip home, one of my CDs from here has me back in aflash.

Heritage“This project is very important tome, and

to the musical heritage of music from theCape because there are still so much musicthat these living legends have to give to theworld.“More importantly it is now also giving

the younger generation a chance to workwith these legends to inspire the genera-tions to come.”Under the leadership of veteran star

drummerJackMomple, compositions ofEr-rol Dyers, Stephen Erasmus, SpencerMbadu, and Ramon Alexander have beenrecorded.

This recording was also made to pay trib-ute to the memory of the Mountain Recordsrecording artists who have passed on, Rob-bie Jansen, Basil Coetzee, Tony Schilderand Alex Van Heerden. While Dyers, Erasmus,Mbadu, andMom-

ple, who are an integral part of the rich lega-cy of music are also playing they werejoined by renowned percussionist DizuPlaatjies, and Tony Cedras, a multi-instru-mentalist from this part of the world whohas gone on to take to the world stages withthe best in the business, including beingpart of Paul Simon’s band for many years.

GiantsThe exciting sounds also come from some

of the younger generation who are part ofthe project. Some of these youngsters havealready become “giants” on the SA musicscene.Ramon Alexander is featured on piano,

with Mark Fransman and Kyle Shepherd, both piano maestros, featuring on saxesalong with Lou-Anne Stone.Bassist Jonathan Rubain also gets his op-

portunity to represent on the album. On Saturday music lovers will get the

chance to hear some of these sounds at Kon-tiki on the Avenue near Atlantis with a gigthat will be starting at 18:00.Tickets are R100 with plenty of refresh-

ments available, but you are also allowed tobring your own. Seats are limited so pre-booking is advised.V For more information and booking contact LionelTemmers on 082 394 0640 or Ramon Alexander on072 418 1263.Check out one of their rehearsals at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvJfcnLHOIw&feature=c4overview&list=UUpXrA_GqrnleALm0379czVA.

DFryers eindigonder toptien

Aglut of Western Province players havebeen named in the South African Rug-by Legends Association Iqhawe Week

All Star Team following the conclusion ofthe tournament. The All Star teamwill not play anymatch-

es but Pieter Muller, head of developmentfor SA Rugby Legends, says that it couldraise the profile of the players and lead tothem being selected for elite squads at theirrespective unions.“The All Star Team couldn’t be a formal

national side because all 16 provinces werenot competing, but we wanted to give recog-nition to the players who played well at thetournament,” says Muller.

Elite squad“It’s all important for the unions to under-

stand that they should be looking at the play-ers we picked for their elite squad sys-tem.because these kids are 15 and they cango on to the Grant Khomo Week setup. Allwe can do is to contact the unions and tellthem what the selections are. It’s up to theunions to put it through.Wewill do what wecan to get the kids in.”The IqhaweWeek was hosted at City Park

in Athlone last week and eight coastal prov-inces competed in the u-15 tournament. Theteams were Western Province, Boland, Gri-quas, KwaZulu-Natal, South Western Dis-tricts, the Golden Lions, Border and EasternProvince. All players selected for the provinces

came fromdeveloping rugby schools and thevast majority came from schools that playin theVuka League, another initiative of the

SA Rugby Legends.Muller says the point of the Vuka League

and the Iqhawe Week is to create a meansto develop players and offer them a “path-way” to the elite set-up at their unions.“Wewant to give thesekids another oppor-

tunity to be seen. We are not looking at thetop schools. We are looking at the ruralschools and the dormant schools. Nobodylooks at those schools. We want to give themthe opportunity,” he says.

Teams“Our Vuka programme in the Western

Cape has over 80 schools. That’s where theWestern Province team was picked from, from schools that never played; schools inLanga and Atlantis. That’s what we want tocreate all around the country.”Players in the Western Province team

came from 16 different schools around CapeTown. Province eventually won the tourna-ment after defeating South Western Dis-tricts 14-6 in the final. The IqhaweWeekwillbe hosted in a different province next yearand all 16 provinces will take part. Mulleradds that the tournament will have “thesame credibility as the Grant Khomo andCraven Weeks”.V The full Iqhawe Week All Star team is: DillonKaalmeyer, Laaiq Felton, Toufeeq Hendricks, ZiyaadAdams, Bradley de Jongh (Western Province), GerlinRichards, Geraldo Charles (Boland), Wilfred Saunderson, Junior Bouwers, Bennie Louw (Griquas), GcinaMngombezulu, Wayne Ngubane (KwaZuluNatal),Shaun Adams, Damion Karelse, Bradwin Johnson,Yulbremmer Keffers, Justin Jansen (SWD), CraigMkhize, Archippe Bomborro (Lions), Gwarube Luyolo,Ngalo Sive (Border) and Richmond Gora (EasternProvince).
